We called here desperately looking for someone to do a splenectomy on my small dog before time ran out but we had limited financial resources. This place quoted up an estimate of $4500-$6500 so we quickly rushed over there. The total ended up being around $7000 for the surgery but were advised not to do the surgery. They stated they were taking my dog back for vitals but put a cone on him and did many other things without our permission, caused him a lot of distress in his final moments (he pooped all over nervously which would have been better if we could be with him). The surgeon when telling us the sad news that we'd need to put him down wasn't just blunt or "telling us the worst case scenario," she was overdramatizing it and genuinely cruel with her wording. I understanding needing to tell someone that it really is the best option to put down your dog, but there is are better ways than to tell them that he's probably going to go into cardiac arrest (which is incredibly rare) and that he only had a 20% chance it wasn't cancerous (it's closer to 30%-35%). She spoke really fast and was very gruesome with details that weren't necessary to share. The other nurse was much more realistic and told us that he would probably be just fine through surgery but because it's most likely cancerous, it would most likely be his last few months and he would probably be in pain when he could find comfort today through eternal rest. Vet Katie, who arrived on shift later right before we put him down, was incredibly kind, patient, and understanding. She allowed us to take as much time as we needed and even went the extra mile and found us an ink pad and paper to get a paw print with (they had stopped doing that through there a while ago). She comforted us with her words and could understand our pain with the recent passing of her dog at home. I really appreciated her and I hope she knows the positive impact she had in that situation. The only reason why this place gets stars is for her. Rest well, my baby Jack I miss you everyday. He was my everything. read more

This is the kind of place that you wish you'll never have to go to, and that you're so grateful it's there. My 12 year old brittany had a procedure that makes him susceptible to pneumonia. Sure enough, when I got home from work last Friday, my baby wasn't eating, was lethargic, and had a temperature. Knowing pneumonia can get life-threatening really quick, I took him to the Emergency Service West. X-rays and bloodwork confirmed my amateur diagnosis. I was given the option to keep Reno there, or to send him home with antibiotics. Given that he was stable, and not struggling to breathe, the veterinarian counseled that recovery at home was a viable option. I am happy to report that the next day, Reno had returned to his old self. We are continuing the antibiotics, and will see his regular vet in a week, but I expect he will make a full recovery. Yes, Veterinary Emergency Service West was expensive. However, had I not taken him, it is very likely Reno would have gotten worse while I waited to see his regular vet, and then may have needed hospitalization. I am so happy they are there! read more

dr. arthmyre was kind and caring as we had to give our precious zoey back to god. she had lymphoma and was in remission but a physical trauma escalated the lymphomas resurgence and her nodes swelled 3 x their size overnight. dr. arthmyre ushered us all through zoeys journey to the rainbow bridge. dr. a was great with zoey bc she was suffering now & we had to say farewell to our beloved girl. the staff was kind and caring too & we were grateful bc it was our first time here bc it was an emergency. we were very pleased with the care dr.a gave our precious zoey in her final hour. zoey was at peace & free again. we were a mess but our girl was home in heaven with no more pain or suffering. thank you so much for all you did for zoey and us. read more

My 4 year old dog Gelty was treated here overnight for pancreatitis recently and I was so pleased with the care she received. The staff was very compassionate, and helpful and we were able to call anytime we wanted to check up on her. Gelty was discharged with very clear instructions and has been feeling much better. It's NYE and we're at my mom's in Canton. My cousin walks into the living room and asks "did someone spill red wine in here?" I walk over wondering what she was talking about and see a big red stain on the rug. It was not wine. Our poor pup Poppy was peeing blood. She's had UTIs before so right away I knew what this was but it was the most severe staining I'd ever seen from her. She seemed totally fine otherwise (eating, drinking, wagging her tail, etc) but within several minutes she'd had a few other accidents so I knew she was at the very least uncomfortable. Immediately we start trying to think of what to do. It's NYE AND a Sunday, so most places are closed for one of those two reasons. We had previously taken my mom's dog to this ER so I knew they were reliable but we first call our usual emergency vet in Ann Arbor since they have experience with our dogs. Here they inform us it's a 12 hour wait minimum. It was around 5pm at this time so that meant we'd be taking her in in the middle of the night. I hadn't realized it but that vet is affiliated with this one so they told us to call over and check there. My husband gave them a call and they informed him it would be about a 4 hour wait, much better than 12 hours, though they'd have to wait onsite in the car. Not ideal but if all went according to plan, they'd be out in time for midnight. We loaded Poppy into the car and he very kindly went to take her in while I stayed back fretting and crying with worry. Regular text updates from him informed me that they were processed right away and, though there was a wait to see the dr, they were able to get moving with the techs pretty quickly, taking her vitals and getting a urine sample. When it came time for the latter they ended up moving them from the car into a waiting room so it wasn't quite as long in the parking lot as as anticipated. In the end they did have to wait for the Dr a bit, so in total it was about 4 hours as predicted. An analysis showed that yes, she had a pretty nasty UTI, but they gave her a 2 week course of antibiotics and some medication to help her resist the urge to go every few minutes (first time any vet had done that with one of her UTIs!) which made her feel better immediately. I really appreciated that. In my last review I did mention the cost being a slight barrier here but I have to say, for an emergency visit on a holiday, it wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting for this particular go around. I'm grateful they were able to fit her in and even more grateful that we were able to all be together for the strike of midnight, too. While it is never a good thing when you have to use an emergency vet, the staff here could not have been kinder. We unfortunately lost our 13 year old golden retriever,Izzo. He was in distress and since it was Easter, we had to choose an emergency vet. From arrival to the final goodbye we felt seen and heard. The staff was concerned with both our and our dog's well being. They explained the dire situation and shared possible solutions. Highly recommended. If you unfortunately need their services give them a call first. They'll let you know how long the wait is looking and start with paperwork. Assuming there's a wait call them when you arrive in the parking lot and then they'll put you on the waiting list and call you when a waiting room opens up inside. In spite of a few serious surgical cases that popped up after we arrived on a day when every emergency vet is slammed they had us out in 4 hours. We took our senior dog there recently. The staff took our history and we were able to wait in our car until we were ready to be seen, which was more comfortable for all of us. Dr. Roux was wonderful - took time to listen to our concerns and do a careful examination, then explained her findings and recommendations carefully. She prescribed medications which were dispensed on site, and our dog is doing much better. For emergency services, the cost was reasonable and we were given options regarding additional diagnostic workup, which we chose to decline until we were able to follow up with our usual vet. The facilities were clean, the staff was caring, and the overall experience was very positive. Would not hesitate to return. read more

My pet was lethargic and struggling to breathe - came on rather suddenly. They flat out turned us away because they were "too busy". Ended up driving another 30 minutes to the next closest emergency vet and he stopped breathing just as we pulled in the parking lot. The other vet managed to resuscitate him, and after 3 days in ICU he recovered. If only he would have been seen 30 minutes sooner, most of his ordeal could have been avoided. read more

We have had to take our dog here twice unfortunately. Initial phone calls both times were pleasant, helpful, and to the point. One time was more of an emergency so took longer understandably. This more recent time was an eye concern which we've been told eyes can turn serious quick! We were there for 5 minutes before they took him back. Got a call within 10 minutes. And we're gone within 35 minutes of even arriving there. From their care we are already seeing improvement with his eye only a day later. i am so thankful for the entire staff at Vet Emergency Services. I came in with my cat who was experiencing a urinary blockage. From the front desk staff to the veterinarians, every single person was so kind and compassionate, and took time to answer my questions thoughtfully. They were also incredibly considerate about making sure we had updates so we didn't get too worried with him out of the house. Pickup was super easy and way busier than when I arrived, and everything still worked exactly as I experienced regardless of the number of people there. Despite being a tough situation for our family, it was made so much better by the wonderful staff at this veterinary service. I sincerely hope no one needs to regularly use emergency vet services, but should the situation arise you can trust your pet is in the most expert care in the area. read more

We were super worried about our pup and asked them to triage her so that we could see if what was happening was life threatening/something that needed to be treated asap. They made us feel so cared for and comfortable. It ended up not being life threatening, so we were put on the waitlist. They said 2.5-3.5 hours but it ended up only being 1.5 - not bad at all. Once we were in with the doctor, she was very informative and nice. She was also transparent about pricing and proactively brought it up after examining our dog, rather than trying to hide it until we got the bill at the end. Before this place we went to MedVet commerce and it was a bad experience. They were going to charge $2100 to run tests before the doctor even examined our dog. We had a wonderful experience with these folks. We were also put on the waiting list and expected to wait a couple of hours but, were taken in about 1-1/2 hours later. It was worth the wait. Our cat snuck out, without our knowledge, and was on the top of the car engine when our neighbor, unknowingly, started his car to go to work. Our dumb cat flew out from the car and had bruised ribs, that was all. The staff were wonderful and the Dr. took her in and treated her wound. The bill was $2700.00 but worth every penny. They took GREAT care of her. Fortunately, we carry insurance on the cat so, that worked out. But.......... She's family. read more

This place is a hack shop only out for your money. I called because our cat was experiencing extremely labored breathing and weakness one evening when we got home. They said that they would "keep him alive until Monday" when someone could see him and that if we thought he was dying there was no point in them seeing him. We bundled him up and took him all the way to Blue Pearl who took him right back to examine him. He had fluid around his heart so they did a tap to remove it. They were kind and gracious every step of the way. Our boy ended up being diagnosed with congestive heart failure and crossed the rainbow bridge peacefully instead of suffering like VES would have suggested we let him do. I have numerous friends in the area who have also experienced horrific rudeness and gouging from here. If you love your pet, DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE. I brought my cat there, because he was not eating and feeling sick. They made us wait in the parking lot for 4 HOURS. I was ready to give up and leave, but there were no other options other than to just go home. I wish to God I had done that. When they finally agreed to take him, they said it would cost $1,600 to keep him there over night and do tests. I was willing to pay whatever it cost for him to get the care he needed. The next day they call to say it's a respiratory infection, and they were going to prescribe some antibiotics. Then, the next thing I know, they drop the phone, call me back, and say he's dead. They gave him a heart attack over-sedating him. I will NEVER forgive them for killing my beautiful little friend. These people are EVIL and will go to hell for what they have done. read more

My dog had a day when she wouldn't eat, drink or accept snacks and didn't have a bowel movement. For any loving dog owner, this is a serious concern. My regular vet wasn't available, so I waited overnight. That evening and the following morning she seem to have mostly recovered. However, her morning BM had what looked to be a blackish red turd at the start of the movement. I contacted my vet and she suggested that I at least have her checked out but they wouldn't be able to get her in until July. Off to Veterinary Emergency Service West we go with stool sample in hand (well in a bag). After an extremely brief consultation, the Vet (Natalie McKeon) said it could have been a Gastric Ulcer. She started talking about all these test they could run. I told her my dog was back to 95% healthy, she had a good movement but I'm just a little concerned about the blackish red turd. She I be? Probably not, she said, but let's give her sub-cutaneous fluids and some medication. OK, I said. They took my dog away and I hear her distinct whimpering. I then get discharged with medication and instructions for treating diarrhea and colitis. My Dog doesn't and didn't have diarrhea I made that clear a second time at discharge. Foolishly, I just paid the $320 took the medication and left, but it just didn't sound right. Why would I be treating her for diarrhea when she doesn't have diarrhea? I decided I'd have to research Colitis in Dogs. None of those symptoms are even remotely close to my Dog's. Her bowel movements are and have always been regular. Twice a day, normally firm; sometimes soft. Never runny and never frequent. I think I'm just going to keep an eye on my dog for a few days and NOT start the treatment regiment they gave me. I can't help but feel like this company took advantage of someone who cares about the health and well being of their canine companion and charged me for treatments that don't match the symptoms. read more

UPDATE: CHANGING RATING TO ONE STAR, SHE HAS NO PROBLEM WITH HER KNEE BUT HER HIP IS BASICALLY DISLOCATED. DO NOT RECOMMEND Our three month old kitten thought it would be a great idea to climb the Christmas tree, and when she fell and stopped using her leg, we took her to this emergency vet for pain and a splint if we needed it. Luckily, nothing was out of place. First, the negatives: overall, we were here for about an hour and a half for one X-ray and a dose of pain medicine. Both the front desk assistant and the doctor were incredibly awkward, and did not have good bedside manner. The total for this one X-ray and pain medicine was a shocking $350. $75 for initial exam (him asking us what happened and squeezing her leg), $95 for the X-ray, $50 for pain medicine there, $100 to have the X-ray read, and $30 for take home pain meds. The positives were: the fact that they were open. They gave us a copy of her X-ray on a disk to take to our normal vet. They didn't try to upsell us. It's a better option than Blue Pearl if you're in a bind, but if you're able, try to wait for your normal vet. read more

My dog was sick for 3 days and wouldn't eat/poop and slept for 3 days when he's usually super energetic. They were very good over the phone and upfront about expected wait times and estimated cost before taking my dog in to make sure it was okay. After initial exam there was nothing abnormal found, they suggested bloodwork and X-ray to find out my dog has pancreatitis. They kept him and gave me regular updates, within 12 hours my dog was back home with me and already more of himself. I got great take home instructions and pricing was very reasonable. Chilling out with my fuzzy baby on my lap, I decided to send back some love to the place that made my kitteh all better. About a year ago the saddest thing happened. I had just adopted a black kitten boy, whom within the first few months of his life had a cyst in his eye which burst. I don't like to think about the amount of pain my baby must have been in, so knowing that Veterinary Service West was able to take care of him on a Sunday was a huge relief. There was no way of keeping the eye, so when we dropped him off for his surgery we knew we would have a one eyed furry child on our hands, soon. Can you believe another vet whom shall remain unnamed recommended putting him to sleep over this? The few hours this surgery took were crazy stressful, I was worried sick and a total mess. Turns out he did fine, but would require some additional love and care as infection was still a threat (especially this close to his little brain). Nothing bad ever happened, and I believe that since he was so young loosing one eye made adjusting very way for him. I wonder if he would know/knows any different by now. My BooBoo is a total mommys boy, he follows me around and needs to be by me any time. He is my cooking buddy, waits for me when I am in the shower and prefers to sleep right by my head. I cannot thank Veterinary Service West enough for the help they gave to us when we needed them most. My older dog was showing terribly scary symptoms, out of the blue, later in the evening on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. After calling around to a few vet emergency lines, based on the seriousness of his symptoms they all recommended that I take him to an emergency vet hospital rather than wait the next day to go to a regular vet. So I brought him here. First impression was very good. Even at 11PM on a Friday, the bathrooms, waiting room and exam rooms were all spic and span clean. The nurses were very friendly, caring, concerned, and knowledgeable, and as soon as I explained the symptoms the two nurses we saw had a few suggestions for what the problem could be. The vet herself was very nice, helpful and sympathetic to what I was going through Given that this is an emergency vet and hospital, I was nervous for the cost. Right away, before anything was started I was provided the office visit price. And yes, the cost of that and the rest of the services that my dog needed were high but I don't know why anyone would be surprised or complain about it. It's the same in the human world, hospital/emergency costs are much higher than regular doctor visit costs. In regards to the costs/services, I was kept informed through the whole visit of what should be done, what needed to be done, the cost and time involved and I was given a very detailed quote once it was all said and done. No surprise costs, cut and dry, I knew what was going on and they gave me time to decide if/how I wanted to proceed. Would I use them as an everyday vet, no because the cost is high and my dog has a great regular vet but for emergency, late night or weekend needs I would definitely come here again. Everyone I came in contact with over the course of the 12 hrs my dog was there was helpful and seemed to care about what was going on. I was encouraged to call at any time to get an update while my dog was hospitalized over night (and I did, twice and neither time did I feel like a bother). I was told the doctor would call me at a specific time for an update the next day about further treatment or if he could come home (and she did). I have no complaints about anything here. The costs are out of their hands, really, they need to keep them at a certain range to pay their employees and to be able to offer 24/7 services. All they can control is their attitudes and how they treat the animal and their owners and from what I experienced, they were top-notch at that. read more

Took my dog after taking her to a regular vet who.said she had a slipped disk. She started to not be able to walk or keep her balance and all of a sudden couldn't see. After 3 hours of waiting, an exam fee of $90, evaluation fee of $120, some blood work that cost $300 and apparently some shots of pain medication which was another $50 she still can't walk or see. The Dr. Said her blood work was good and her eyes were fine and to keep her in a cage to restrict movement and give her the Gabapentin. The next day she lost the ability to.stand and was falling on her face and still couldn't see. I feel they did nothing to help, no answers and scammed me out of almost $600 for nothing. Now I am at a neurologist. I could have use that $600 for some real help. Money is tight due to not working during this pandemic. read more

I understand that as an emergency vet your schedule/wait times are unpredictable, however that can be relayed without diminishing a pet owners concerns for their animal. I was told to bring my injured dog in and once I arrived the wait time increased 5 hours. My concern is not with the increased wait time but more so with the rude, compassionless nature of the TWO receptionist I spoke to. I was told he would be seen immediately upon arrival and when I asked why the five hour wait time wasn't mentioned as a possibility before I drove 40 minutes to their Plymouth location, I was spoken to like a child. My dog is a family member in my eyes and when I was worried and frantic for help I was met with disdain and attitude. I hope they change how they treat their customers that are only trying to get emergency care for their animals that they love. read more

Vet did NOT give us the option of sedating our cat. The vet did NOT do a thorough job at cleaning our cat's abscess out. The vet did NOT shave enough fur off to clean it out enough. The cone was kept on and antibiotics were give to the cat twice a day as prescribed (for 10 days). Couple days later, the abscess fills again! (And we had to pay another $250 to another vet.) We took the Cat to Westland Humane Society's vet, who sedated the cat, cleaned and drained the abscess thoroughly! The vet said there was NO WAY this vet could've cleaned this abscess enough without sedating the cat! Westland Humane Society's vet was more knowledgeable (and they didn't try to pack on the costs as this one did). This vet wanted to do blood work...for what? It's an infection and abscess; no blood work needed! There was NO WAY this vet cleaned the abscess thoroughly...we could hear the cat screaming (and obviously was scratching) from the waiting room, and the cat was brought out soon after being in the back room. I want a refund. read more

They called around to see if they could get him scoped tonight but all the offices that could do that were full. The staff here was patient and kind and made sure we understood all our options. We brought our small, rescue dog (Gigi) there after midnight (the day before the New Year's Eve Holiday) because she was coughing up blood. The Team here knew exactly what to do...they performed the proper tests, diagnosed pancreatitis, and (through their diligence and thoroughness) also discovered a consolidation in one lung (that had settled in as pneumonia)! The Doctor and entire Team were GREAT! They were highly responsive, knowledgeable, and administered care with MUCH tender, loving care (TLC)! Their extensive experience and quick response time saved Gigi's life! In addition, we were pleased to find their covid-19 prevention procedures were well-implemented and ensured the safety of all pets and clients. This place is horrible. My husband waited 6 hours in the car with minimal updates on our pets condition. The receptionist is incredibly rude, which clearly is an ongoing issue due to the number of reviews reiterating this. After 6 hours of waiting and hundreds of dollars in tests, they don't even know what's wrong with him. It makes no sense to make people wait in the car for hours- they need a better process and a new receptionist. read more
