Dr. Meghan DeClue at Veterinary Medical Center is just the best. Our 14-year-old Shih Tzu Luke developed a large growth in his lower eyelid that greatly impeded his vision. Doctors at two other vet clinics recommended taking him to an eye specialist/surgeon three hours away. But having worked with Dr. DeClue previously, we knew she was more than up to the challenge. She removed the growth two weeks ago and the result has been perfection. The growth is out with no complications, and Luke's vision and zest for life have been fully restored. Dr. Hollstein is a very friendly, personable and knowledgeable vet, and he performed a cardiac sonogram on my little Patch, AND carefully and fully explained everything to my wife and I, as he showed us the sonogram. We found that his recommendations were reasonable and practicle, and the communication between Dr. Hollstein and our own vets was quick and accurate. I am a veterinarian who started out as a vet assistant at the VMC about 20 years ago. We went here twice and had poor experiences both times- the first time we took one of our kittens here, the women at the front desk mocked us for saying "bye, we'll be back" to our kitten, and complained about how grumpy our cat was when we picked him up. (He had just been neutered, and had been surrounded by unfamiliar people in an unfamiliar place all day... I think it's understandable why he might not have been at his best.) The second time we were there, they left our kitten in her carrier for so long that she went to the bathroom (more than once) in it. Very poor treatment of our pets and very poor customer service. Additionally, went I left a similar review on Facebook, they "reported" my account and had my review removed. If you can't handle one little bad review on Facebook, that only serves to increase my mistrust of this business. Makes me wonder how many other low reviews they've managed to get rid of. read more

The staff and doctors at Veterinary Medical Center are so great, warm and compassionate. Dr. Minor was my primary vet when I lived in San Luis Obispo and is highly skilled at using the most modern approaches in medicine. For example, for one of my dogs that had chronic ongoing ear problems, Dr. Minor suggested trying a new ear protocol treatment he learned about from a conference taught by a veterinary dermatologist. (how great is that? a vet that is always seeking to learn new and better approaches) Another thing I love about this vet practice is they offer dental x-rays. What a difference, because they can see bone loss under the gum line and pull those teeth now, so as not to waste the anesthesia and have a dog getting a really thorough dental that will last a lot longer than the standard dentals with no x-rays. The prices at Veterinary Medical Center are unbelievably reasonable, considering the speciality equipment they have there (an ultrasound machine and an EKG machine which is not standard at every vet). read more

Dr. Sharon Klintworth has been my primary vet for several years and she has always provided our dogs with the best of care. Sharon Klintworth, is the best vet I've ever had for any of my pets. I'm a dog lover and appreciate a vet who doesn't gouge you financially after going to several over the years who have. I had a border collie/golden retriever mix who was apprehensive walking in the door initially, but after meeting Sharon, was always more than happy to go back. We switched to veterinary medical center about a year ago when we adopted Brutus from the pound. Shortly after we brought Brutus home (he was neutered at the pound) he developed an infection from surgery and so we met Dr. Minor. He was amazing, attentive and confident and helped us feel comfortable nursing out new family member back to health. Since then, we adopted another rescue pup who had had some major medical histories and Brutus had recently been back in suffering a gnarly hematoma and requiring another surgery. Every visit has been amazing. The tech staff are always friendly and super quick to get us seen. Dr. Minor does all of his patient teaching himself and the follow up care is very thorough. This clinic seems truly concerned about the well being of their patients and we are beyond fortunate to have stumbled across them! read more

Dr. Hollstien saved my German Shepherd. I was told my Shepard was dragging his foot because of degenerative hip disease by another vet. When it got so bad he could barely walk I thought we would have to put him down. Since I trust Dr. Hollstien implicitly, I decided I needed to get his opinion to help me make this difficult decision. I drove from SLO to Atas. to see Dr. Hollstien. Dr Hollstien saved my previous dog from Parvo & on another occasion reassured me my Shepard did not have a heart defect as I had been told. Fortunately I made the trip to see Dr. Hollstien! My dog had a torn ACL, after surgery he is doing well!!! Great staff. Compassionate Care! No one but Dr. Hollstien will ever care for my beloved canine family member again, no matter how far We have to drive. read more

I would have walked away then I said she may have been seen here before I got her. This vet seemed upset I was even there for help. My dog has been sickly so I was even hoping for a referral did not happen. I noticed the help at the desk seemed scared of her. I used to think highly of this practice until my dog needed surgery for a broken toe. He was stepped on by my horse so along with the broken toe, had several lacerations requiring sutures. When I picked my dog up after surgery, I noticed a faint odd smell on him but really could not locate where the smell was coming from. That was a friday evening. On sat. the smell was a bit stronger but still I could not tell where it originated. I might add that his leg was completely encased in a cast from elbow to toe with elastacon dressing on the bottom so there was no entry point into his surgery site. By Monday the smell had increased so that I called the vet office and while waiting for a return call, removed the first layer of elastacon dressing and saw a great deal of drainage had seeped through the dressing. Dr. Minor did not return my call until very late Monday. He than said to bring my dog back Tuesday am. On Tuesday morning the drainage was abundant so I changed to a clean dressing as I was on my way into the hospital, only replaced with a telfa pad for ease of removal. At this point the bottom of the cast was completely saturated in drainage. As soon as Dr. Minor removed the dressing he said "he has maggots' there was no discussion at time as he quickly took my dog in the back to remove the cast. When I called later that day to find out about my dog, the office manager came to the phone and said "you let the cast get dirty and there were maggots in it", I was completely floored that they were blaming me for the maggots. I had kept this dog in my house at all times an under close supervision when out to relieve himself. At no time did a fly come close to his cast not to mention that there was no entry point for a fly to even enter the surgery site. Come to find out there were only two maggots. Sorry but no fly in history has only ever laid two eggs. Obviously the eggs were not removed during the pre-surgery scrub. This would be easy to do as the numerous crevices in a dogs pads along with the death between toes could easily hide fly eggs. However to place the blame on my post op care is without question a vet trying to cover his own ass. I spoke with Dr. Holestein about this and he adamantly stated that their pre-op procedure would never allow leaving fly egg in the wound and that there "flies in his house" so I must have allowed flies on my dog. Of course this does not explain how the flies were able to get through the dressing but than again maybe they were flies that use osmosis. After cast removal, a plastic brace was put in place with soft cast dressing and vet wrap for support. I went to another vet for followup dressing change but this vet is a friend and does not own and x-ray machine. i called back to vet med center for follow up with another vet in same office and they said I had to stay with Dr. Minor. I said I would than go to another clinic and they were able to get me and appointment with the other vet in the office. A day before that appointment, The office manager called and without even listening to me was very rude and said I could not change vets and had to use Dr. Minor at which point I said I would than go to another clinic. Had Dr. Minor been willing to even discuss the possibility that he did leave fly eggs during the pre-op scrub and that putting a full on cast for a broken toe over lacerations that need attention is not the best solution than I would not be writing this review. Everyone makes mistakes but to accuse me of a lack in post op care and the fact that all personal in their back office are told that I let "the cast get dirty" and that caused the maggots. What other mistakes might they cover up. I still don't know if permanent damage was done by the maggots as the amount of drainage leads me to believe that they had eaten into healthy tissue as well as the compromised tissue. I also want to say that while their newly hired office staff are friendly and accommodating, the office manager remains cold, controlling and interfering in a matter she knows nothing about. read more
