Saying goodbye to our most beloved 13 yr. old German Shepherd was one of the most difficult things we have ever had to do. We rescheduled twice as she had her good days and some bad days. When the "final" day came I (Peggy K.) again wanted to reschedule again as Lila's mind and heart were sharp and she was getting up without assistance and patrolling her yard with her authoritative bark, but her degenerative myelopathy was very advanced. I heard about this service yesterday and called for an appointment and was able to meet with them today. I have two elderly dogs and a cat. I wanted to establish with them so when the time comes for end of life, we would all be more comfortable. The ladies arrived on time, and were just two of the nicest people I have ever met. Each of my pets got lots of attention and affection. It is obvious that they truly care about their patients. We discussed diet, prescriptions and general health. They trimmed my dogs nails, expressed some anal glands but both dogs were much more relaxed then when they go to the regular vets office. They are set up to handle most regular exam stuff and vaccinations. If you need anything more, they have great relationships with the ER Hospital and will act as a liaison for you to provided updates and explanations. When the day comes to put my pets to sleep, I have no doubt that these ladies will treat my babies with total respect and dignity. Being faced with the harsh reality of needing to allow a pet cross the rainbow bridge is never easy. This last Monday, my poor 9-year old boxer was ready to go, but her body would not allow her to go on her own. I called Compassionate Hands on Sunday when they were closed, and they reached me via text first thing Monday morning. I couldn't bear the thought of trying to bring my baby into the cold clinical setting of a vet's office, not to mention she had lost her strength to be able to walk independently, so having the option of someone coming to an in-home setting was what I felt was best. They were able to fit us in, and I instantly felt comforted from the moment they walked in. They made all over my sweet girl, and calmly and empathetically explained the process, as I'd never had to deal with this before. They made me feel confident that I was doing the right thing for my dog and made me feel comfortable to experience any emotions I was feeling. Not at any time did I feel judged. They were patient and allowed me as much time as I required to be with my dog and grieve in peace. They assisted me in bringing her outside, where her final resting place would be in the yard she loved to freely roam. They also offer cremation resources, but I did not utilize. Their price was beyond reasonable, their compassion was unmatched, and I will be forever grateful that my dog KNEW she was in safe and loving hands at the end. It's taken be about 6 months to put into words how beautiful my experience with compassionate hands was. My 18 y/o staffy was clearly not doing well and it seemed like she was beginning to phase into the sad reality we all face as pet owners. Compassionate Hands was a blessing to my family this year, several times over. My mom was referred to them when her baby girl Casey (a large dog over 100#) reached her end-of-life point and needed transitional care. She, in turn, recommended them to me to assess my elderly dog's quality of life, five months later. Both Dr. Katrina and Rebecca are warm and attentive, and my dog and cats were curious and calm in their presence. Dr. Katrina observed Lily in her own environment, inside and out, and her interactions with the cats; she recommended some supplements and medications to help ease Lily's dementia symptoms (which included disoriented pacing for 6-7 hours each evening nonstop, and waking every two hours throughout the night, like a newborn). Dr. Katrina was candid with me about what additional medication would mean for 16-year-old Lily, when the original protocol was not quite enough to mitigate her condition - and that letting her go may be the best decision for all of us. Deciding on a pet's final day is one of the most painful, angst-ridden decisions one must make, but the heartfelt concern and gentle approach of Rebecca and Dr. Katrina helped us know it was time to lay our girl to rest. We were all able to be there with her, petting and reassuring her during her final moments, in the peaceful setting of our home, on her familiar blankets, with breeze from the patio, reggae playing in the background - rather than bringing her in the car and into a strange environment, which would have only added to her (and our) anxiety. On a brighter note, I'm incredibly thankful they offer routine vet care, in addition to hospice, because trying to corral multiple cats into carriers is not ideal for anyone...!
