I had a craving for pizza during my stay at a nearby hotel in downtown Austin. Already settled in for the night, I decided to check if Via 313 was available for delivery on Uber Eats and luckily for me, they were! I ordered a small half and half Detroit style. I went with half herbivore with no black olives and half four cheese. My pizza was ready fairly quickly and came with four thick big slices. They could have easily been shared by two people. This location, on Rainey Street, is nothing of the sort. Let's see. If you weren't expecting it, this place is a food truck, located next to the Lustre Pearl. What this means is you look at the menu posted on the side of their truck, then place your order through the small window. They will ask you for your phone number so that they can text you when it is ready for pickup. The staff at the location seem to not wish to interact with you--symbolized by the quick closing of the ordering window. Or maybe it's to keep the mosquitoes away. Anyways, you'll be left standing on Lustre Pearl's front porch. If you planned to sit rather than take away, then you'll be searching for a place to sit at the Lustre Pearl. You can sit inside, outside, upstairs, in the front, in the back, on the ground, or maybe just stand around. If you did want to wash your hands, Lustre Pearl's sinks can be found on the left side of the building. Oh yeah, and they have booze and free water inside. But back to Via 313. Pick up your food when it's ready. They'll provide some napkins, and packs of pepper flakes. If you ordered the Cadillac, then I'm sorry for you, unless you like tasteless cheese. Ok, the prosciutto adds some saltiness, but that's it. The balsamic on top adds some sweetness. The hot pepper packets make it more palatable. Just stopped by their Oakhurst location and tried a special Detroit style cheese pizza with vodka sauce and one of their thin crust pepperoni pizzas! I really liked the fluffy Detroit style pizza but wasn't a huge fan of the vodka sauce and preferred their regular sauce in their pan pizzas. The pepperoni pizza was really good too! The crust was more crispy in the pan style pizza. Since it was our first time visiting here our kind server ordered us a free dessert! It was the cinnamon sticks. We opted to take them to go since we were stuffed from the pizzas. Definitely recommend to try to them! You can order ahead for to go which is what I did, or walk on up from any of the bars nearby to place an order! The menu has lots of options which made choosing a challenge, but we ultimately decided on the Big Dill and Continental. Granted I love pickles, but the Big Dill was so yummy and unique! I love a quirky pizza, and this is it! If I ever return and the Big Dill is on the menu, that is definitely my order. The Continental was also yummy, but they forgot to add our arugula which makes the pizza pretty bland. Thankfully I stopped by a few hours later to get the arugula so I could at least have it with my leftovers, but initially it made for an underwhelming pizza. Leftovers were great with it, though, so just try to remember to check before driving home! The crust makes or breaks Detroit-style pizza for me, and this crust was it! I ordered the Classic Cheese and a Mexican Coca-Cola (which is the best cola) and was told my pizza would come out in 30 minutes but only waited 15 before getting my meal, so that was a relief. The pizza was cooked perfectly with toasted edges that provided a nice crunch on every bite. The sauce had a subtle tang and the cheese blend was delicious. It will however leave your upper lip smelling like cheese the rest of the day, lol! My only complaint is that it is a bit oily but that shouldn't scare you away. Delicious Detroit Style pizza! This location was a food truck located just to the side of Placeholder Tiki Bar. I ordered an Original Pepperoni and they notified me that it was ready via text. I'm glad my first Detroit-style of pizza was from Via 313! XD Go figure, and from Austin, TX of all places. They claim to serve traditional Detroit-style pizza and if that is the case, I want some more! Move over Chicago and New York style because Detroit is in da house! The most defining feature of this style is that it is squarish. They serve their pies as 4 corner pieces here. The huge difference is the crust and this one has a thicker than normal crust across the *bottom* of the pie. Plus it's extra crispy; you won't be without that crunch! I was able to order half of *The Cadillac* (gorgonzola, fig preserves, prosciutto di parma, Parmesan, balsamic glaze) and *The Detroiter* (smoked pepperoni under the cheese, natural casing pepperoni on top) at a price that fluttered in between what two whole pies of each would cost -- $14.50. Wow! These pies are clearly made fresh because not only do they take a minute to make it out to you, but they were pillow-y with a perfect chewiness. Quite wholesome too with that extra thick bottom crust. The Cadillac was a dream with that balsamic glaze drizzling and the prosciutto was just so fresh. The Detroiter was LOADED for sure, so prepare yourself for a hearty protein packed meal. Otherwise, it was all so, so delicious! No party for me. Lets talk pizza if you dont want the whole story. I had the Detroit because if you're going Detroit style pizza might as well get the one named after the style I guess. It was four good sized square pieces, just enough to stuff my face, but not completely question my life's choices. The pepperoni is crisp but not burnt. The crust is amazing which is the most important part of pizza. It was burnt just right. The cheese was loaded on but not melting and falling off. Every bite had lots of cheese and sauce. Delicious all the way through. They also give you ranch or honey dip (your choice) I want ranch and had no Ragrets! (That's my credo) They weren't buddy that night because it was a Wednesday night and it was cold. Took about 20 minutes to create this master piece which he warned me it would take. They just text you once it's ready. I had enough time to take a stroll around Rainey street to watch some live band karaoke and get some mini donuts for later. I'm fat what can I say. This was my first time having Detroit-style pizza, and it was A-OK. I was having a beer at Craft Pride where I found the Via 313 food truck. I mean, all of the pizzas coming out of the truck and on to the surrounding tables looked amazing. But my slices just fell short for me. Via 313's menu had a good selection of whole pizzas, ranging from different toppings, in addition to a build-your-own pizza option. When I asked the employee about slices she said that they only do cheese and pepperoni, and it would take 20 minutes because it's freshly made. I didn't have a problem with that, so I ordered two slices of the pepperoni pizza. My pizza wasn't bad, but it's not something I would crave again. It definitely was freshly made, especially since it was super hot when it was delivered. I waited to bite into it, so that the toppings would stay intact and it would cool down. Cheese was good, with lots of mozz on the slices. Yet, pepperoni was minimal, which was a shame since you're expecting a handful of pepperoni when you order a pepperoni pizza. The red sauce was a tad too sweet to my liking, so wasn't my jam. Again, the pizza wasn't bad, but I wouldn't spend my money on it again. Note to people with kids: you will not be allowed onto the premises to order as the food truck is located in the patio area of a bar. The bouncer was apologetic and polite then asked me to order online. Online order had a pop-up that said they weren't taking orders, so I called up and explained my situation of having my 4yo son with me. The woman on the phone was polite and took my order. I explained my constraints and she said just call back when they text saying the pizza is ready and she'll bring it to the gate. Also note the first text you get is when your pizza is ready there is no confirmation of your order text so I thought maybe they had taken down a wrong number (as the music is pretty loud). I always get the Detroiter because I love how they put pepperoni on the top as well as under the cheese. In my hometown of Los Angeles we're in the midst of what can only be described as a pan pizza renaissance. Detroit-style pizza in particular is absolutely everywhere, and it's such that I now crave it at least every other week (waistline be damned). Imagine my dilemma, quickly replaced by my pleasant surprise, in seeing not only that Via 313 crushes the pan pizza game in Austin, but that they've been doing so for years now long before things really took off elsewhere. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? Via 313 has various locations, but this one on Rainey Street is essentially just a small pick up truck tacked on to the dining area of a separate spot (whose name I've forgotten). Especially during covid it works well, and I was able to call my order in and have it ready to rock and roll 20 minutes later. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? While I suppose I'm used to Los Angeles pricing, the value here at Via 313 was incredible. For $14.00 I got a Detroiter and threw some jalapenos in the mix. This could have, and should have been a meal for two, but I quickly demolished the entire thing myself and regretted nothing. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? This was very good. For those not familiar with Detroit style pizza what you've got is an emphasis on what is essentially a foccacia-like crust with the toppings stacked (often under the cheese) with some marina that tops everything off. It's wonderful conceptionally especially to someone like myself who really loves crust, and Via 313 had a good iteration of the concept. The crust was excellent, and my only wish might have been for more pepperonis in the mix and maybe some sort of seasoning or flavor to life the cheese and marinara a bit more. Single Star. We were pretty skeptical when the suggestion was that we had to try Detroit style pizza in Austin, especially coming from the east coast where NYC pizza reigned supreme. But, I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with Via 313's pizza. In fact, I think I may be a new fan of Detroit style pizza! The crust is thick, but not overwhelming. It has cheese on the bottom with the toppings in between layers. The sauce is then spread out in stripes across the pizza. The sauce is really good and well-seasoned. This was probably one of the best pizza's I've ever had before, especially if you're in the mood for a thicker crust pizza. This pizza also beats deep dish pizza for me.
