I walked in on a whim because I live near by and have always wanted to check this place out. There are no frills here, a classic bike shop is what you came for and what you will get. Inside was a man named Vic, who couldn't have been more knowledgeable or passionate about bicycles and the bikes he sells here. He is a straight forward and honest man who keeps it very real, just my kind of thing. Although I didn't leave with a bike today I will be back soon to grab one. First off, we got my new bike (well it is from the 70s but new to me) on the trunk mounted bike rack at about 4, as I realize that bike shops might not be open, but at that point, hell, that thing is on there, it is worth a shot! I knew that there was a bike shop on Bardstown and of course it was closed. Continuing down the street I see the sign - yes! So as I head to investigate I see that Vic's too has closed according to the posted hours. And the guy waves me in - you get a star sir. I grab my fancy "new" bike and roll it on in. Vic himself comes to meet me and talk shop. Wow, can this guy talk shop. Most of it is over my head, but interesting nonetheless. He prices me on a full tune up at 40 bucks, a new tire and tube at like 16 each and something else it needed that is escaping me at the moment. All in all, 85 bucks to make it sing. He even gave me a tip on taking little balled up pieces of aluminum foil to help clean up the metal on the back that was a bit rusty. Just my kind of advice. So myself being lazy and hating cold weather, I have only actually ridden once. But I will get better. I can't waste my snazzy bike that is now ready to cruise! read more

Dropped in on a whim on a Sunday afternoon after a few weeks of wanting to get into biking in earnest. Of course, as a complete novice, I had no real idea of what I was looking for or anything about bikes really. Vic was more than happy to answer any questions I had, explaining the differences between the styles of bike he offered, what their strengths and weaknesses were, and took what I was going to do into account before recommending me a few different bikes. He even allowed me to take them out for a spin to see how I felt about them unprompted. I really appreciated how he didn't simply recommend a bike to me and after a test drive, simply sell it to me and that be the end of it. He took his time to educate me on maintenance and even helped me load it into my car. I don't understand why there are people that didn't have a pleasant experience because I was beaming when I left, and I'll definitely be back for all of my maintenance needs and future purchases. I walked in and Vic was working on a bike. Seemed pleasant, asked me what I wanted and wanted to spend. At one time in my life I lived in a saddle, but its been a while. I explained what I wanted and that I was willing to spend $1000. Not looking to ride in the next RAAM, just some basic fitness for a guy going gray and gaining weight. Vic showed me a few options, I asked a few questions, then a young lady entered and he turned to her and said "can I help you?" We were in the middle of our transaction. He turned to her and never spoke to me again. I wasn't asking difficult questions. I wasn't beating around the bush. I walked in ready to spend money. He ignored me once she entered. I'm sure he knows his business, that's apparent. His customer service skills on the other hand are lacking. Here's a clue. " how are you young lady, feel free to browse, I'll be with you when I'm done with this customer. I waited 10 minutes. He never said boo to me. I walked out. He didn't even ask if I'd made any decisions or wanted more help. $1000 clams you lost Vic. Not to mention potential future business. I don't run a bike shop, but I do have an MBA. I've never had a bad experience at Vic's. Vic has been working on our Bikes since we moved to Louisville. I found both Vic and his Dog Bentley to be quite welcoming. The shop itself is a must see for any Bike enthusiast. It reminds me of the neighborhood Bike shop I used to frequent when I was a kid in Chicago. All the work Vic has done for us has been top-notch. He even replaced a defective inner tube for me at no charge. He was up front about the charges and explained everything he worked on in detail. It was a no-hassle experience. Here's the bottom line. If you love vintage bikes or just need a simple repair or tune up, Vic is the guy to see. I found him to be friendly, accommodating and quite knowledgeable about Bikes. I took in a 2008 GT Avalanche I had not ridden in several years, as I wanted to get back into riding and it needed a good going-over. The two people with whom I dealt were helpful with their suggestions, the price for the maintenance and replacement parts was reasonable, the bike was ready a day sooner than the tentative promised date, and it looked as if in new condition. It has been about a week or two since I have had my last visit/experience with Victor at Vic''s Classic Bikes, so I have had some time to reflect upon my experience and not generate this review with as much emotion as I would have if I wrote this after my initial experience. I first contacted Vic via telephone to see if he could do a "tune-up" on my bike, a 2009 Trek Series 4 All Terrain Bike with multiple A.M. upgrades. This is my vehicle and companion (of sorts), as I a car free individual. After being told the type of bike and asking him if he is experienced with working with this type of bike he stated he could do so, and do so that day. I rode right over because after contacting other area bike shops I was told it would take three days for a tune-up, something I cant afford to do. No one would wait three days for an oil change on their vehicle, which is what I equated my tune-up to be - regular maintenance on my vehicle. In addition, due to such a mild winter here in Louisville my riding opportunities have increased, so I wanted to get my yearly Spring tune-up done, just a bit early. I dropped off my bike and went for coffee and errands in the immediate area and went to get my bike about an hour later and paid the man the $65 he charged for the tune. All was done and seemed to be right in the world, until I started riding my bike as I usually do. The (first) issue occurred that evening when I was riding and when I shifted into 2nd - 7 (14th) my chain started jumping. I downshifted and went back up to 14. Same issue. "OK??" I wondered. So I continued on hoping I could make it back home. I was a couple miles from home, on a busy street, and it was night. When I shifted into 14 again I hear a SNAP! my back de-railer flew off!!! WTF!!!! I was aghast at first, then came the livid anger. I walked my bike back home the 2+ miles and waited until morning so I could take my bike back to Vic and have him explain his workmanship and "tune-up". I have never had an issue after a tune-up. The expected result, and justly so, is improved performance, not disintegration. The next day, I tried to call Vic's and was greeted with an automated voice message stating that the recipients mailbox was full and could not receive any more messages. UGH! Annoying, but whatever, I wanted my bike restored to proper working order, so I walked my bike from Old Louisville to his shop, about a 2 mile walk, and when I arrived I saw the sign on the door said CLOSED Monday and Tuesday. UGH!! So I walked my bike back home, the 2 miles. For some reason, on Tuesday I called the shop again though the sign said Closed on Tuesdays. He answered. YAY! I explained to him what happened and he asked me to bring my bike in so he could take a look at it. I left immediately and walked my bike the 2 miles to his shop, again. Vic looked at my bike and couldn't explain the "Why" what happened, happened, but he knew I was not pleased and was going to rectify the situation. Vic replaced the broken de-railer, all be it with a lesser quality piece than what was on it originally, and replaced my chain. I stated I was concerned about other damage that had occurred due to this incident and my concern was acknowledged and presumably dealt with as he explained and showed to me what had occurred. I was happy at that point because I felt he had rectified the situation and fixed my bike properly. This notion proved to be false after I started riding my bike again. It still didn't shift properly from 14 to 15 to 16. WTF! Since my bike is an extension of myself when I am on it, I KNOW when something is not working correctly. It's like a muscle or limb, and you know when something is strained, sprained, broken or pulled on your body, right? Well, by this time I have lost all faith in competency in Victor and his ability to work on bikes that not the classic ten speed style street bikes. The proof was in the pudding. So I took my bike to a shop further up the street and explained my experience to the guy on duty at the time and he tended to it right then and there and showed me the muriad of issues that were still in need of attention to my bike and showed the extent of the damage that had occurred due to my de-railer coming off. There were some serious issues still with the bike and its ability to perform as necessary. Gee - Thanks Vic. I do thank goodness for the guy at the other bike shop and for his expertiece of bikes and their repair. He fixed me right in a very reasonable amount of time and charged me nominally for it. So long Vic, all the best to you. In Summary: Vic may be proficient in Old street bikes, but not in new bikes of varying/deviating nature. It is unfortunate because as a person/personality I believe Vic is a good upstanding character, I just don't believe, from my experience, that his knowledge of bike repairs; at least on my bike, is what I need or can rely on in the future. So I purchased a bike pump from here and everything went well, even answered some questions I had, and pumped it for me. But my handle bars became loose and I needed it tightened. I came on a day he was closed but working in the shop, I thought I saw a man duck under the counter but when I called was told he was coming back from 2-4. I came back and call and nobody was there. So two days later I go again within store hours and the light is on and the door is locked and I called and was told he went on a "ride". Really? Can't that be done outside of professional work hours? Very unprofessional and such a inconvenience, luckily I walked to the store nearby and they helped me. read more

My need was simple, I needed a tire for wife's 60 ties Raleigh. Several other shops had the size but at twice the free ship Internet price. I was most pleased to find exactly what I wanted at few dollars more than waiting for delivery. And, yes Vic quoted a price and quickly mentioned tax would apply. When a price is fair, tax should be no surprise besides, tax is still less than expected tips. read more

While visiting Louisville, I drove past this shop three or four times before stopping in. Eventually, I had to visit. Glad I did. Two minutes after walking in, I was deep into a conversation about craft beers, red wines and vintage Colnagos. Vic gave me a tour of the shop with some special bikes. We even spent time looking at old tools. Really I was hoping he had a certain old Colnago frame in stock but no luck though the guys did give me suggestions on how to search for one. Great shop. Skip this joker! I had a tire split while in town and began looking for a new one. Worked my way down the list and got no answer from any. Finally Vic answered stating "hello, this is Vic how can I help you?" I said, "Oh great, I was just seeing if you were open, will you be there until 5?" Vic's reply was the reason for the review, he asked what day it was. I replied Um Thurrrrsday? He then said no the date, to which I replied the 4th?! Vic: "Yeah, isn't that a holiday? I'm not open and I probably couldn't fix your bike anyway." This is why people buy online! LBS's struggle for business bitching about folks buying online then when we need you, you're a smart asshole? WTH Vic? I'll bet Amazon is open today, and they won't be a smartass to me. You're right you probably couldn't change a tire, I know you'll never change mine anyway or sell me a tire for that matter! Skip this shop and keep looking. read more

My son got a flat tire his first day of college classes. He went to Vic's, where Vic went above and beyond what I ever could have expected. He fixed my son's bike while he waited, at a price a college kid could afford, and he even led my son through the repair process to teach him a little something about bikes. Vic tuned up my bike several years ago and I purchased a nice Brooks saddle from him. He was kind, courteous and very informative. I am more of a leisurely rider though, so I hadn't returned to his store for a while. Recently, I had my garage broken into and my bike among other things was stolen. It was a very distinct bike and easily recognizable, so I took out a Craigslist ad saying it was stolen. Vic saw the ad and detained the bike when the thief came in to sell it. He called the cops, although they didn't show up in time and he also helped me get the guy's phone number so I could give it to the police in the hopes of recovering some of my tools that were stolen. I got my bike back and am hopeful they will catch the guy that stole it all because of Vic's help. He didn't make a dime off of anything of that. He helped me out of the goodness of his heart. Some people on here have complained about Vic's hours and that kind of thing. Here's my analogy: you can go to Home Depot and dig through thousands of parts with unhelpful sales people or you can go to Keith's Hardware (just south on Bardstown Road from Vic's) and get knowledgeable service and the one part you need. If you're the Home Depot type, go to another bike store. If you're the Keith's Hardware type, you'll appreciate Vic's knowledge, humor and generosity. And we need more of that type supporting small and local businesses on Bardstown Road and elsewhere, so GO TO VIC'S! read more

I cannot stress how poorly I was treated in this place. The sign says Vintage Bikes, I think they need to add bitter employee underneath that. I am extremely knowledgeable about bikes, I own a rare vintage bike, and attempted to engage with this guy, who in turn treated me like I was asking him to smell a dog turd. It is not a vintage record store guy, it's a bike shop. No need for the stilted attitude. They do have sweet vintage rides hanging, Colnago, paramount, etc, but whatever, you could have a direct descendent of the Campagnolo family turning wrenches for you, but there is never a need to treat customers that way. A bike shop is about community, I guess except this place. Will never spend money or return to this place. read more

Very bad experience with this guy. I know nothing about bikes. I went to the vics store looking for Specialized that I saw at craigslist. I bought the bike for $344 dollars whith my receipt. Some friends mine saw the bike and now I know that many parts don't fit, the tires in very bad condition, the brakes to replace very soon and more. Please tell me what to think obout this guy?. I stopped by Vic's bike shop (which by the way is worth the trip just to see the interior and antiques Vic has collected there) as I was exploring the Highland area of Louisville. Vic was very friendly and took time out of his day to answer my questions about fixing up old bikes and specifically information about an old Schwinn I found on Craigslist. I bought a bike from Vic's last fall and it was all in all a wonderful experience. He showed me some used bikes that he had up for sale as well as a few newer models that were in my price range. I got a good price on my PUBLIC bike and he helped fit me to the right frame, letting me do a test ride first. I should have written a review then, but time passed and I forgot. Until I got a call that he had found and secured my bike, which had been stolen the day before. I left from my work and drove 45 minutes to come look at a bike from this bike shop. I found his bike online on craigslist listed for $325. After I had looked at the bike and began to talk to him about the price he mentioned that the tax would be included. This was not the most unreasonable thing in the world but i still wanted as a customer to try to negotiate him down a few dollars. Considering the tax wasn't listed online(and should've been) I decided to try to get the bike for the cost minus the tax and asked in a nice manner. Vic himself blew up like a child and ask my friend and I to leave the store. I have never been treated so rudely in my life. I would have paid him the amount plus tax along with needing a new seat and another bike for my girlfriend but due to his lack of manners we left the store and will never return! I suggest everybody else do the same. There's a better bike shop right next to Buffalo wild wings and the people there are very kind! read more
