Absolutely not surprised to see all the great reviews for Mel and his crew. He has done a massive repair on the rear facade of our house, remediating dry rot, water damage, and less-than-ideal work by prior craftsmen. They replaced, repaired and painted three floors of wood walls and ceilings; resealed my balcony and refreshed its railing; repaired my screen door; and completed other tasks that required coordination with a variety of experts, like updating some roof sections and adding new gutters and skylights. A few points about the overall experience: - Mel and his team stuck with the job even as the amount of work stretched far beyond initial estimates. He committed to my 100% satisfaction and did not stop until everything subpar was brought up to his high standards. This house has never been so well sealed. - Mel communicated more quickly and completely than any construction professional I've ever worked with. Starting from the review of the initial contract and through the removal of the portapotty at the end of the job, I always knew exactly what was happening and why. - I am not a professional contractor but my bestie's husband is. I had him review the work and he had no notes. - Access to my rear facade is awkward. His crew made the extra effort to traverse the hard to navigate easement behind my property. Victor (and his crew) were very friendly and personable. My job grew (as most do) because of rot that couldn't be seen on the first inspection . So, just know that any job can (and probably will) cost lots more. This isn't their fault, just how these jobs go. They did a good job uncovering all of the damage and carefully repaired everything. I am very pleased with the work that they did for me. They were very knowledgeable about what they were doing. I have had some remodeling experience, so when they explained things, my construction knowledge told me they were knowing what they were taking about. Mel Victor is the real deal. We contacted him to help us bring previous owner's unpermitted work up to code. Mel's years of experience, knowledge and communication skills were apparent from the get go. He walked us through the project from initial inspection, permitting, construction to final inspection, answering every call and question. He even graciously stepped in when we had a hiccup with the HOA. I was impressed with Edwin and crew's care and diligence on site, They made sure to carefully protect surrounding areas, while basically taking the kitchen apart. We were so pleased with the final outcome. Not only did Mel and Edwin bring everything up to code, they greatly improved the overall aesthetics. Our property was having some general repairs/remodeling by another contractor, when that other contractor alerted us that the metal, load-bearing central post outside the property was showing rust deterioration. The other contractor recommended replacing the post for safety and structural integrity. The challenge was, the contractor said he needed us to find an engineer to draw up plans for replacing the post. This was a stressful and daunting project to embark on, as we weren't sure of the scope, timeline, and cost. Enter Victor Construction & Engineering. A google search for engineers led to three local companies, all with good reviews. I reached out to all three, and only Mel Victor responded to my inquiry. Mel was able to come out the same day, give me a rundown on his recommendation and have his team come out within 24 hours to do emergency shoring to stabilize and support the weight of the building, which was beginning to sink downwards. I was impressed with Mel's timeliness in addressing the situation, and his overall experience as he seemed quite knowledgeable on the situation and was confident on what needed to be done. He was quickly able to have his architect and engineer draw up plans for replacing the post, and he also handled dealing with obtaining the necessary construction permits from the City in a timely way. In short, the new plans called for installation of a new, thicker post with an even sturdier underlying foundation for the post (this is an oversimplification, but apparently the original foundation was built mainly on sand, so most of the sand was dug out and replaced with more concrete and rebar). Throughout the process, Mel was easily and readily contacted via his personal cellphone, and he would often come out on site to check on the progress himself. He also made sure to minimize inconvenience to us, so we actually were still able to use the car garage throughout the construction process (not an easy task as the load bearing post stands between two side by side garages). In the end, the overall cost of the project evolved into what was larger than hoped/expected, but understandable given the urgent nature of the project, which improved the building's overall structural integrity. (if further deterioration of the load-bearing post was left unchecked, the building was in danger of collapsing on itself). In retrospect, I wish the other two engineering companies I had contacted had gotten back to me, just so that I would have had more estimates to compare from. However, I'm still giving Victor Construction & Engineering 5 stars due to overall professionalism, experience and capability, efficiency, quality of work, and Mel's commitment to customer service and satisfaction. What has been very helpful is Mel is very understanding of each person's financial situation and he has been flexible in working out a payment plan with us. You can minimize the number of nights you lay awake wondering when the next big one will come by performing a seismic retrofit on your property. Mel Victor came out to my home a few days ago armed and ready to answer all my questions. The seismic retrofit business is fraught with imposters much like the aluminum siding industry of the '60s. They use fear to oversell their solutions. Mel Victor came out and explained in detail what it means to comply with both local and federal earthquake retrofit standards. These codes and standards for performing an earthquake retrofit can be interpreted differently. Many so-called interpretations can be profit-driven. I did not get this feeling while talking with Mel Victor as I believe him to be honest and hardworking. Before you go down the earthquake retrofit road make sure you do all your homework. Talk to contractors, talk to the county, read the FEMA standards. Your life may depend on it someday. Now go get some sleep. read more
