Review of Victory I Cruise from Portland, Maine to Toronto, Ontario April 15, 2026 through April 26, 2026 Victory I is not a new vessel, but it offers a cozy feeling with a passenger capacity of about 120 people. The staterooms are small and adequate for the 10-day voyage. Most importantly, the crew is always smiling and friendly. It doesn't matter whether it is the Captain, the Cruise Director, the Tour Director, dining room wait staff or the engine room staff. They all offered greetings and a smile whenever we saw them. Our trip was the first of the season. Consequently, in mid-April, there were days of fog and rough seas. The ship's doctor reported that pills were able to cope for the most part with those who experienced sickness. The Atlantic Ocean can change in an instant. We transited six-to-ten foot waves for the entire first night. It gave us a chance to get our sea legs under us. The ports we pulled into were each interesting. We took advantage of the included tours and rode on lovely motorcoaches to explore the cities. It was fun to see historical architecture at each stop. The Maritime Museum in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island was a highlight and a wonderful display of the area's historical stories. They had thought out accommodations for wheelchair users so we were able to enjoy the entire facility. Food on board was magnificent. Two restaurants on board offer seating choices. Passengers can select the same seating each meal or alternate tables so they can visit with other folks along the way. The "fancy" restaurant is on the fourth deck and is accessed via an outdoor breezeway. Reservations at that venue are required. The lounge on deck two was always open and offered coffee, tea and Capuchino. Baked goods were available around the clock. The only downside to our experience had to do with physical accessibility. I am a wheelchair user and can walk a few steps at a time. One elevator on board worked well getting us from one deck level to another. However there were physical barriers to contend with. To be expected, there were hatchway thresholds to prevent outside weather from entering the ship. They were about four inches high and the wheelchair could not cross them. That meant I had to walk over them and then contend with the gangway devices which varied with each port. Had I been unable to walk that little bit it would not have been possible for me to enjoy the cruise. One gangway was so narrow moving one foot past the other became problematic. The crew were most helpful when they could be. When the wheelchair could travel over a gangway, crew members got me up the steep slopes to the ship's entry. I truly felt they wanted to take care of me. Victory's website says only designer jeans are permitted in the restaurants yet fully a quarter of the passengers wore Levi's products. And the requirement for collared shirts didn't seem to phase folks as they wore whatever they felt like. The company's web site is severely lacking in information about physical requirements for accessing the fourth deck and the sundeck. It is not possible for a wheelchair to access The Grill restaurant on the fourth deck. Another lack of information involves land tour descriptions. If someone is unable to walk up into a bus or up stairs or steep inclines, they will not be able to enjoy this voyage. Even access to the stateroom with a wheelchair was not possible. It required walking to access the room. The Victory I is registered in Bermuda. It is not subject to the Americans with Disabilities Act or the Accessible Canada Act. Because of the variety of port gangway designs, the difficulty of taking a wheelchair on walking tours over cobblestone pathways and the need to climb steps and steep slopes with almost each tour, the company should make it clear that passengers with wheelchairs will have difficulty on the trip. Their website depicts passengers will have little difficulty on any of the port tours. Even the bus tours require climbing on and off the coaches. Our assigned emergency station was on the fourth deck. Our room was on the third deck. If the elevator wasn't running in an emergency, the only way to get there was by climbing stairs. For me that was not an option. Rather a catch 22. We can highly recommend the trip for able bodied travelers. Experiencing the crew kindness is wonderful.
