My husband and I had a travel delay in Paris, and were not going to be able to pick up our dog until the following day because our flight was rescheduled. I made an international call to inform them, however they said that he could not stay an extra night...thankfully my brother lives an hour + away was able to pick him up. This added another 2 hours of driving to our trip after traveling for over 24 hours. My brother also told me they originally brought out the wrong dog to him. After my dog was settled back home, I looked at the receipt and medical records. They were suppose to give him his influenza #2 of the series but it was documented as he received influenza #1. In shock since they had his medical and vaccine records, I called them and they said it was incorrectly documented, and they did credit us which I appreciated. His most recent visit is the most disturbing. Over the July 2nd weekend, with heat index over 100, my dog came home with the pads of his back paws burned. We noticed as soon as he got out of Pender a limp in his back legs. My husband went back inside to ask if he had any accidents or hurt himself, had they noticed him limping? The answer we got was that he got 5 walks a day and they didn't notice him limping once. Therefore I assume they didn't give him any attention or they just didn't care. When we got in the car, my husband looked at our dogs paws and immediately my dog pulled back his back legs and whimpered. The pictures don't do it justice, but it appears he was left out on the hot turf or pavement. It doesn't take long for the pads to burn from the heat of summer as most dog owners know & I never thought this would happen at a boarding facility. My dog is now limping, licking his burns and my husband has to take off work to take him to the vet. We wanted to love pender retreat as much as we love our vet at Pender Fairfax and the convenience of the retreat to the airport but after this we will be looking to board our dog elsewhere.

The dog monitors just sit on their phone all day, not monitoring the dogs, and only lift a finger once dogs start physically fighting, and then its right back to their phones. Again, beautiful facility, head guy at the front desk was great too. This place has potential, just needs to hire employees who at least act like they care and actually monitor the dogs.

I truly believe animals have an instinct for people. More importantly he took the safety and care of my dogs very seriously. He is a former vet tech and even helped me with some health concerns I had with one of my pups. I have now used this company for a few months and have also met some of the other available dog walkers. They have all been top notch and you can tell they enjoy their jobs. It is imperative to me that I am hiring professionals who not just love dogs, but understand how to positively correct and reinforce good behavior. My favorite thing to do is watch how excited my dogs get for their walk on my home security cameras while I am at work. They keep the house clean and wipe off the paws when it is muddy outside, so that is just a nice bonus. They are super flexible on schedules and communicate very well. The daily notes are a nice touch and we feel very safe letting them into our home and taking care of our two large dogs. Their boarding rates can't be beat and we love that our dogs are in a home and are not in a cage when we go on trips where we can't take them. So all-in-all their daily walks and boarding services are great!

Also keep all of your paper work as contracts are subject to change. I made the mistake of messing this up and had a whole issue that was eventually resolved. No biggie. In actuality, you get zero reports and dogs of all sizes are all put in the toy (size) room. They started off my 1yo in the playpen in the toy room because she seemed overwhelmed when they first put her in what looks to be a 30x30 room with 30+ dogs of all sizes. They said their trained employees will watch her and let her out when she's ready. No one is watching. There is one person in that room that is constantly pushing dogs off of them while they mop up poop and pee everywhere. I hope they're changing out that mop water and hope there is sufficient cleaning elements in it. Finally, they told me half days (less than 6hrs) are $27. I left my dog there for 5hrs last week (2hrs were crated nap time with no supervision) and they charged me for a full day ($45). There was no communication regarding price changes - no signs on site. They said they emailed me. Acted like it was my fault I was not on their newsletter DL. I receive other spam from them, but not this mysterious price change email that they claim to have sent everyone. They have 2 other rooms for other sized dogs (medium and large) that they barely use. Odd that they turn off the cameras 12-2pm during crated nap time. There are blind spots in the corners. Not sure if this place changed with the on slaughter of new covid pups, but it's not cheap and not hard. I hope they're sufficiently paying the single dogsitter/cleaner in the room.

I have been a customer for about ten years. However, when we got our most recent puppy two years…read moreago (labradoodle) we have not only had to find a new veterinarian, but now a new groomer. With this company it keeps coming down to price. We switched to a new vet when my male dog needed to be neutered and I received an estimate ODAHC for well over $2,000. We kept coming back for grooming services because they did a better job than some of the other less expensive places we've tried. Over the past two years the price for grooming a medium doodle has increased over $100 from $120 to $230. When I commented on the price increase I was basically told that the price hasn't changed which is a lie. The pricing structure has changed from itemized services to a total bundled price. My final straw is that while the groomer is competent, she basically does what she wants and we only have about a 50% shot (if that) of actually having his hair cut the way we've asked. Just because this is McLean doesn't mean predatory pricing is acceptable.
