Found this gem in August 2021 when my 8-yo twins wanted to learn how to play violin and guitar. I sit in classes with my kids during lessons and I'm super impressed on how patient the teachers are with beginners. At the end of 10 weeks lessons, my son is able to play Ode to Joy on guitar and my daughter plays 4 different pieces at the recital. I'm very happy with their progresses and will continue to sign them up for lessons. So very glad to find this place. The place is very clean and adhere to covid protocols. Staff and kids wear masks the whole time they're inside. Staff are friendly and approachable. They're responsive to email inquiries. Overall, I give Villa Musica a perfect score! read more

We have had the pleasure to have both our girls ages 10 and 12 at Villa Musica. Both girls attended their show choir class and really enjoyed it. My youngest practiced piano and oldest guitar also a Villa Musica with their instructors and have been excelling in their music learning. I'm not so thrilled with this place. My daughter has been taking a series of voice lessons here. The receptionists are rather ill-informed. The one working today was unable to provide any sort of driving direction to their facility. Unfortunately, today is the recital day. More than our guest is likely to also become lost. On at least two other occasions, the receptionist (a different one than today's) was unaware there was any sort of recital date coming up. Worse. When we heard rumor of an upcoming recital and we asked her directly as to the date and call time, she became annoyed to be bothered with the question. She simply didn't care. They post a warning sign prominently in their lobby to inform you that tuition is due by the 10th of each month or you will incur a hefty $25 late fee. Each time your tuition is one day or more late. When we first signed our daughter up for classes here they were unable to process Visa card payments; this has since been corrected. Unfortunately, I was the recipient of a tersely worded tuition demand call from one of their owners. She spoke with a tone to her voice, as if to say she suspected we were pulling some kind of fast one. There's no price break for taking multiple classes. read more

I wrote a review for Villa Musica over a year ago and I just noticed that it got filtered out for some reason. I'm going to try this again, as I really love this place and want to give it a great review. My daughters have been taking various private and group lessons at Villa Musica for about three years now, and they have liked everything they've tried. At the moment they take private violin and piano lessons and they have previously participated in violin and singing group lessons. The girls love their teachers, and they have developed so much as musicians since they started. The students get plenty of opportunities to perform in recitals and other events, which I think is important. The Villa Musica facility is great, with a kitchen and a lobby with a play area. The school also has a beautiful little recital hall and offers many concerts on site. read more

Villa Musica is a mini-school for adults and children featuring guitar, violin, percussion, flute, and choir classes. Rehearsals/Lessons are at Mount Soledad Church, but sometimes they switch it up, so check the address, but it is typically somewhere in La Jolla. I'm in the choir. It's a no-audition choir, meaning you don't have to have previous singing experience. All you have to do is like to sing. If all you do is sing in the shower or in the car -- you are still welcome here and can join. (If you really can't sing on-key, just sing quietly and you'll eventually get it because all the surrounding voices will help you out.) The choir is made up of mostly early 30's- late 40's working professionals. Both men and women are welcome; it's mostly women right now. Everyone is really nice - friendly and welcoming. I like the music -- it tends to be songs from musicals like "All That Jazz" and "Mamma Mia!" What I like best about this place is that a session is only 10 weeks long, so you don't sing a song over and over until you get sick of it. read more

I have been taking private singing lessons with Fiona (director of Villa Musica) for about a year and have been in two of the choirs for six months. As a voice coach, Fiona is outstanding. She is my fourth instructor - three of whom were college music professors - over the last fifteen years of singing, and probably the best. Given the quality of teaching, her rate is incredibly reasonable. In addition to her talent as a teacher, Fiona is likable and seems to truly enjoy her work and her students. If you have worked with a burned-out music teacher, then you know the importance of these traits. There is a smaller all-female choir and a no-audition choir of about 30 men and women. The members are a lot of fun (no prima donna behavior allowed) and range from recent college grads to retirees. A potential downside to Villa Musica for some people is the location - the new center is in Sorrento Valley. This is great if you work in the area, but can be a bit of an inconvenience if you have a lesson/rehearsal during rush hour. Overall, Villa Musica gives people a fun, supportive environment to develop as a musician, no matter what your age or skill level. read more

My son recently started Suzuki violin here. We are very happy with his teacher Ms. Cami. Lessons are well organized and also allow time for music theory lessons and fun games. Songs and interactive lessons keep the students engaged during the 45 minute lesson. Lobby has a playroom and several sofas. Plenty of toys to keep the little ones active and happy during the lesson. read more

I LOVE VILLA MUSICA!!!! I found this place after seriously hunting down an old voice teacher that I used a few years ago. I got in touch with her after a serious lapse in my vocal training. My teacher said she was now working with this music school and I ran over! This is a community owned music school and I think it has so much to offer! Villa Musica has tons of teachers that offer classes for groups and individual private lessons as well. They also have different performances put on by students and feature local artists throughout the studio. I worked with Stephanie Sabin for roughly a year before I moved and will shortly be returning for more lessons. I believe that the prices vary for each teacher but so worth it! read more

I was attempting to rent a room for my boss to practice piano while in from out of town. This was one of the few places that actually rented out acoustic pianos for practicing outside of lessons by the way! While my boss' schedule ended up changing so much that we weren't able to make it happen (totally on our end), Maddison was so patient, responsive, and accommodating both via phone and email. I would definitely refer a friend to them based on the customer service alone. read more

Our family has been coming to Villa Musica for about 3 years now. It's a wonderful community of music educators, students and their families, directed with care and dedication by Fiona. They are sincerely committed to furthering music education and appreciation throughout San Diego. Both instructors we've worked with have been great. Highly professional and compassionate, we recommend them both: Bob Pierzak (music composition) and Steve Luchs (violin). Regarding the negative reviews, keep in mind that the sheer volume of people served by this organization dwarfs these few and far between negative experiences. So, if you are looking for music lessons for you or your child in the area, this place really should be at the top of your list. And before you make a decision, you have the option to meet the teachers, observe classes, and take a trial lesson. I think you'll find, like many of us have, that this is the place you've been looking for. read more

I have never in my life been treated so poorly by any "charity" type of business/school due to my socioeconomic status! Anyone seeking out this school because of its financial aid assistance program needs to beware! Everything went fine and well when I brought in my application for financial aid and Fiona (the Director and I assume owner/founder) approved my application on the spot. She told I would be receiving 50% off lessons and that the teacher would contact me about setting up lessons. The next day I received an email from Fiona stating that the teacher would be in touch shortly. Well, two weeks go by and I don't hear back from anyone! I emailed Fiona, asking why no one had reached out to me about scheduling lessons and NEVER received an email back from her. At this point, I was starting to wonder if this is just how the school treats its financial aid recipients because they are not as important as patrons who are within the means to pay the full tuition price! Finally, about a week AFTER I emailed Fiona about the teacher never calling me, I get a response from Claudette apologizing for the miscommunication and assuring me that the teacher would be in touch. She also told me the teacher emailed and called me, both of which I NEVER received. I even frequently checked voicemail AND my spam box, and still received NOTHING. Days go by and I still don't hear from anyone. At that point I was tired of being given the run-around and emailed Claudette about how disappointed I was with how long the process was taking. So after all this, I FINALLY reach the violin teacher, and we set up the first lesson. I am low-income and do not own a vehicle. My daughter's uncle, who I also rent a room from (my daughter and I share ONE room in his house!) drove us to the lesson. After the lesson, the lady at the front desk said they only accepted cash or check and I only had a debit card, not to mention I was low on funds anyhow. No one at the school called me to let me know when tuition was due, or which payment methods were accepted prior to our first lesson, but no surprise there! Thankfully, my daughter's uncle said no problem (he had a check book in the car) and wrote the check for us, AGREEING I WOULD REIMBURSE HIM FOR BEING SO KIND. Then tonight I receive an offensive voicemail from Fiona insinuating that I have a husband or spouse I am hiding! Unbelievable! I am a single mother, a full-time student, and hardly have enough money to afford basic necessities. I am working as hard as I can to provide for my daughter while bettering our lives and life is stressful enough without having to deal with the discrimination I encountered at this school! I hate sharing such personal information on a web site but I feel as though anyone interested in applying for financial aid here should be warned! This woman (Fiona) does not know all of my personal information and never bothered to take the time to ask! What a horrible experience, and what a horrible school! I am trying to do the best I can with what I have and to think I was excited about finding a school that might be able to provide my daughter with the same type of enrichment only afforded by well-off people! Well, Fiona has made it perfectly clear that we are not welcome at this school and has even gone as far as accusing me of being a liar with a hidden husband. Absolutely unreal, if your school does not want to accept low-income individuals, STOP OFFERING FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE! I am absolutely livid and blow away that this business is registered with the BBB as a charitable organization, what a con. I have tax returns to prove my low-income status, but of course no one bothered to inquire about any of my documents that prove my income before accusing me of being a fraud! AVOID THIS SCHOOL! It has been a month since I began this nightmare, and to think I could have found an alternative for my daughter but wasted all this time being ignored and treated like a piece of garbage! Oh and BY THE WAY, even after Fiona had the audacity to leave me such a rude voicemail message stating that tuition would have to be re-negotiated, the school still cashed the check despite the fact that THEY were disputing the amount, and despite the fact that we only attended one lesson and won't be attending anymore. This school receives grants and other FREE money for being a charity organization yet they can't seem to accommodate the very low-income people who are the ONLY reason they receive tax breaks and other perks... I think it's clear who the fraud is. In response to Fiona's comment below: Thank you for your condescending response to my negative experience at your poorly managed school. Six years after my first review, my daughter is STILL at Villa Musica, this time studying piano AND violin. I couldn't be happier with both of her teachers. Several years ago, they've added student monthly recitals, free of charge to families who take lessons at Villa Musica. These concerts are a unique opportunity for your child to play on stage in a small, supportive environment. I know many parents like to have the teacher come to their house, but I love going to a music school which offers a great learning environment, plus the opportunity to switch teachers of instruments to suit your child. read more

In business, whether non profit or for profit, prompt and clear communication with customers is arguably the most important aspect. The only reason this is 3 instead of 2 is because Isaac is a seriously skilled violinist and I appreciate the time and effort it must've taken to be so exact in identifying what your student needs to be a better performer. This being said, I only had one "trial lesson" at this establishment and will most likely not be going back soon. I arrived 15 min early to get tuned and warm up. I walked in for the first time and the receptionist asked if she could help me. I informed her I was here for a lesson with my teacher and she said, "Oh... he didn't tell us he was coming in today." He was late, which I understand because of where he was coming from, but I didn't get a full lesson time and he didn't bring any materials... which made me think Fiona had not communicated our long conversation about what level I was at. Having been a studio manager in several different music and arts studios, NEVER communicate to a student (as the receptionist) that your communication is that poor. It really made it seem like the two were not in touch whatsoever. I'm happy that I got to meet Isaac again and I think that once I get more finances, I will probably reconsider solely because he seems like an effective teacher. Although, I would urge the school to at the very least communicate that they are in touch with their teachers and be clear that even if the teacher is late and you spend 20 min talking because you are trying to feel out what you need to gear your lessons towards... that you will still be charged the full amount for a real lesson as for a trial. read more

Great place to make music, and they thought up a little something for everyone... Villa Musica is a unique center for music in that it provides, in addition to the normal private instrumental and voice lessons, ensembles of all sorts for all ages. Kids can sing in the "La Ti Do" choir, and more mature folks could join the community choir (without the stress of an audition). There is a guitar ensemble, a flute ensemble, a recorder class, and many more creative programs that kids and adults alike would learn from and enjoy. This is a great community music school, my son who is 5, very active, and a typical boy is enjoying his first foray into weekly recorder lessons -- we enrolled him in the summer Music Adventure camp in August 2013, and it was a great week that included arts and crafts, outdoor playing time, a field trip that he thoroughly enjoyed, and I felt all the staff and parents who helped out were great with the kids. This is what led me to enroll him in music lessons, as he really developed an interest in making music during that week of camp, giving something to him that was more than I could give by just us listening to a wide variety of music together. The hours of camp were very good for meeting my part-time employment/child care-related needs and I found it to be priced slightly lower than a lot of other camp options and with longer hours, so a better value overall, at least for me. I am looking forward to more participation in Villa Musica's course offerings and hopefully with our busy schedule we can go for a recital or other event sometime soon. read more

This is a long delayed review. I enrolled my 6 and 8 yo daughters in the strings summer camp last year, and it was a surprsingly big hit. The class sizes were small and focused, with plenty of theory, practice and play. The big finale was a concert at the end of the week-long camp. It was the first time my daughters really caught on to the communal joy of music (they've been enrolled toddler music lessons/piano lessons since age 4). I will probably enroll them again this summer. read more

What is even more impressive is the outreach program. I have personally witnessed young children beaming as they received their first violin. I have taken my daughter to Villa Musica for 3 years, and she loves the classes and teachers there. She recently completed a week of choir/ glee camp, and it was her favorite activity of the whole summer. The teaching is of a very high quality, and the atmosphere is friendly and supportive. My daughter took violin lessons at villa musica for 6 months 2 years ago. Unfortunately our learning experience was not great. The teacher assigned us wrong size violin and did not properly check if it fits although I asked him/her a couple times. The violin was obliviously so big for her. 2 years later, my daughter still uses one size smaller violin than our villa musica teacher suggested. That gives an idea about the attention paid. Regarding lessons, they were rather unstructured, in a sense that my daughter got stuck with the same very boring song for a long time and got really bored of lessons and practices. I was not given proper instructions on how to practice at home so our home practices turned into a pain. After 6 months, my daughter still did not have a proper posture and bow hold. I do not remember any emphasis on those either. The recital was a disaster for my child, since she was asked to play with two other kids she has never seen before, with no group practice whatsoever. The positive aspect is that our teacher was very kind and sweet and I believe that she/he is a talented musician. In summary, I think it is very important to determine your expectations and priorities and discuss them with your teacher before committing. That will bring everybody to same page and avoid wasting each other's time. If you are Ok with having an intro to violin, having a good time and do not expect a serious learning experience, maybe Villa Musica is great. After switching to another music school, I truly understood what really learning violin means. Since then, my daughter has learned so much and she happily enjoys playing violin. Ok so I'm in the glee club and it is so fun!! I've learned a lot about music by comming to here it is so amazing. I recommend you come to this place if you want some singing experience. In the glee club you also have to dance to the songs your learning. It is really run and we have a performance at the end of the classes. This has been really fun and the teacher is Ms. Jill she is an outgoing teacher and is really fun. We have fun in this class but also manage to get done singing all of our songs. Our songs that we are mostly singing now is seasons of love, stereo hearts, and happy. I recommend this highly! It has been a fun experience for me lately. I love villa musica. Villa Musica offered an interesting art event paired with a flute and piano concert. What a treat on a Sunday afternoon. The flutist played an inspired mix of music from around the world; some solo pieces and some accompanied by piano. Great acoustics too!. The ambiance was lovely and the vibe spot on. The artist was a talented young lady from Baghdad. I would definitely go again to a future event. read more

My 6-year old has been taking violin lessons with Cami Smith at Villa Musica for about 6 months. Cami is fabulous. She has a way with kids and teaches violin and music theory in a way that's fun. I feel so lucky to have found Villa Musica. The instructors are amazing; of the caliber you normally wouldn't even encounter unless you were studying music in college. I have learned so much from my violin teacher (think what would happen if I practiced more!). The school welcomes children and adults, with group classes, ensembles, workshops, and private lessons available in a variety of instruments and voice for pretty much every age range. In addition to being a genuine music school, it's also a 501(c)(3) that offers scholarships and music education programs to people, especially children, who might otherwise find themselves priced out of music. The executive director and staff have a real passion for music education. The school also partners with other community organizations from time to time, which results in some great opportunities for its students. For example, it has offered master classes to chamber groups of all skill levels in connection with Mainly Mozart, and during the summer it hosts an adult orchestra. During the summer, Villa Musica also offers a variety of music camps for children. These camps are the perfect opportunity to keep the kids active, expose them to something new, and maybe limit the need for daycare, depending on your circumstances. I take violin and music theory here privately, and I've also had a great experience singing in the non-audition community choir for the past few years. Not everyone reads music, but we have a pretty good time! I have also enjoyed the jam band that meets on occasional Saturday nights. It's a casual opportunity to come when you can, meet other people in San Diego who just want to play, and learn something new, no matter your skill level. Highly recommended! My daughter just had a great summer camp experience at Villamusica. The Music Adventure Camp was a full week, 9am-5pm, apparently fun-packed (I was worried if she would last all day, but she did, and on top of it she came home in an excellent mood) exercise where a bunch of 5-year olds learned to play a simple piece on the recorder, studied songs and did some beginners musical theater, made crafts, build simple instruments, and at the end, performed in a 20 minute or so recital on the stage of Villamusica's really nice facility in front of their proud parents. The instructors (three of them for 8-10 kids, excellent ratio) seemed very nice and were liked a lot by the kids, if the "cinnamon roll hug" at the end was any kind of indicator. We will be back for "Karate recorder" or "LaTiDo singing", and I will be happily waiting during the lesson in their large lobby (with a couple of sofas and some toys for smaller kids), getting some work done or reading a book while all kinds of music floats in from the practice rooms... read more
