An update to the beloved store I frequent for all my old-house needs. Previous review is pretty much on the dot. I still love the friendly staff here. This last visit, I wanted to find parts to fix my too short doorbell wires, and got a full service lesson from a former electrician. Less than a dollar for the necessary wires and about 3 bucks for connectors, only because they didn't have them in singles and I had to buy a 10-pack. I love the friendly service. Previous review (8/2020) Compared to the Home Depot south of here, this place is tiny. But well packed. And has mostly everything you need. The best part about this place, as tiny and crowded as it is, are the people. The people working here are always so nice! And attentive! I've never been in here and not had someone ask, "Can I help you find anything?" Sometimes more than once if you're perusing. And the questions are never annoyed, but friendly, like they really want to help. They also fix screens (and sell everything you need to fix it yourself if you're in the mood for it). While they quoted us about a week for it to get done, it was actually done in one day. It's a franchise, but it feels like a neighborhood store. Love it. read more

Every time I walk in with a random "thing" (air filter, gate latch, screw, etc), they immediately help me find a replacement. Today I was in and out in 4 minutes with a new air filter for my lawnmower. The staff is excellent, and the prices are great. I won't make you look at my disgusting, never-been-changed in a decade, can't-believe-it-held-up-this-long, air filter, but the cashier even let me throw it away in her bin. read more

I find this store has a pretty good selection of indoor and outdoor items at a reasonable cost. Ace Hardware, my go-to for everything. Being a new homeowner, it seems like there is an ENDLESS need for supplies. Plus, we're already doing plenty of renovation so this place is now my bff. It's smaller than other Ace locations, but it's still got ya covered on all things home, hardware, yard, paint, tools, and beyond. I've made a few visits lately to the paint side of the store (separate entrance if this section is all you need), and I've never failed to find what I'm after. The pros that work here are genuinely so knowledgeable - anytime I've explained to them a project being worked on, they're quick to recommend certain items or brands, and talk you through how best to use everything. I've purchased paint brushes, trays, spackle, sanders, primer, finishing coats, and plenty of paint. Very quality paint I might add. However, you will be paying a pretty price for it. Most recently we popped in for a handful of household items yet again -vaccum filters, caulk gun, screws, bulbs, etc - and I have to say the staff is incredibly helpful. If you've been here, you know tight the isles are, and how FULL they are... of thousands of items. It feels like a cluster f*cuk in a way, but I guess there's a method to the madness. Anyway, the staff is always walking about asking folks if they need help finding anything (answer is always yes). They're friendly and point you to the exact spot you need. Very appreciated! Date of visit: 11/25/22 Things have definitely gone downhill since my initial review for this location a few years ago. The store seems more and more dated with each passing year and half of the items are now locked up so you need to track someone down to get small things like screwdrivers or crowbars. On this visit, I needed just a couple things and while staff was helpful, they told me the wrong aisle for something (that was locked once I found the right aisle), they couldn't find a way to ring something up for nearly 10 minutes while the line backed up through the store, and then told me I couldn't use the Black Friday coupon for something that wasn't on sale because "it was already the lowest price we can sell it to you for." I don't even know what that means, and I really debated telling them that I would just go to Home Depot, but I had already wasted so much time that driving down there would just add insult to injury. But next time I will make the drive further away so there's less runaround and more appreciation for my time. read more

This place is a disaster. No one ever answers the phone when you try to call, and every time I have been there there are 15 people working but no one is actually helpful. The last straw was our experience trying to get our mower serviced. We took it in and they told us 3 weeks. It ended up taking 9 weeks. No one ever called us with any updates and since no one answers the phone we physically had to go to the store and get updates in person. One time we stopped by to get an update they couldn't find it at all. When it was FINALLY done the invoices were a mess and didn't match what we were told. And to top it off they sent us home with the bag from someone else's mower! Complete shitshow. Too bad too since it is quite convenient to where we live. read more

Just wow! Our realtor recommended this store specifically for top notch service, and it did not disappoint. I was truly impressed. We just moved to the area, and have encountered several unexpected project that needed prompt attention. We're also new to "older" home ownership. The staff here have been very knowledgeable and friendly. The prices are competitive. The store is small, but well appointee. We're always greeted with a smile. We've been able to fine what we need, from small repairs to bigger jobs around the house, Ace has truly been the place. We've also shopped at the Home Depot, but the staff couldn't answer any of our questions when we needed help, and items we needed were out of stock. We'll be using Ace from now on. The paint staff were esepacillay helpful in recommending product and supplies I'd need for my project, and din't just point me in the direction of the most expwnsive things. They even threw in paint can openers and stir sticks, a nice touch. They even shook up my can of primer in case it had been on the shelf for a while, which I don't thin anyone has ever done for me. I stopped in on a different occasion needing hardware, and the gentleman up front overhead paged someone to meet me to help me find what I needed. I really appreciated them going above and beyond to save me the time and frustration of fumbling around on my own. It's a level of service you don't often find these days. Nicely done. read more

I commend the three brothers that continue to work extremely hard in making sure that you'll find during your visit to one of their stores precisely what it is that you've been looking for, although you may have thought up until then that the item you wanted wasn't being made any longer. Dedication, patience, understanding, and compromise are the keys to a successful family business, and I believe this family has maintained a good balance with each of them. Yet, compromise is not inherent to the goods they sell for every item on their shelves I've found to be of good quality... The kind of stuff that you'll still have many years from now. To state that their workers provide good service would be an understatement, for every individual that works for them will have you feeling that they genuinely care and want to make sure that you're being helped if you need assistance in any manner... One thought on that which I know is entirely accurate, and that is if it turns out that they really don't care, then I believe they have taken on the wrong job, for they must all be truly wonderful actors. I find it sad how many individuals get pulled in by the hype of the large-chain-establishments, thinking money will be saved, or perhaps one will find a more extensive selection. Truth be told, if you don't mind spending up to an hour trying to get some assistance and you don't mind purchasing discounted items that in a year or two will most likely be tossed, then, by all means, stick to the big chains. Personally, I prefer, especially on a busy day, to be able to go into a store and walk out in less than five minutes with exactly what I'm looking for while knowing with items such as tools, I can put up another peg on the wall above my workbench because I know the item I'm placing there from my Village Ace bag will hold it's value in the years to come. This is a very well run operation. I've come to the paint department many times to seek counsel on my home painting projects. Daniel is 'da bomb!' Dude knows his stuff super well. He also can knock color and stain matches out of the part. There is also an older guy, John, who knows his stuff super well, too. I would recommend coming here over your local Sherwin-Williams... Not only is the Benjamin Moore paint superior, but you actually have some people who know paint. Sherwin has cleaned out the old timers and staffed their stores with clueless college fools. Don't waste your time with their destructive advice. Seek a true professional like Daniel and Village Paint. read more

Still great. In recent months, a new crew of teens has joined the team. They're not as experienced as the older crew, but they're every bit as willing and eager. In times when all shopping feels hazardous, the folks at this Ace are a respite from the angst. Stopped yesterday for $1.44 in odd screws, but you'd think I made their day. Looking for that old fashioned hardware store? One where the employees actually know what they sell, how to use it and will give you helpful hints? Then look no further as Village Ace Hardware is your place. It's hard to get excited about a hardware store- after all- it's hardware. But this place gets my business time and time again as they know hardware! It is staffed by "more mature" men and women who take pride in what they do. Ask a question on how to do something- and you'll actually get step by step instructions on what you need and how to do the project. The other great thing? They carry parts for old houses of which I am a fan but finding odd sized washers, faucets, radiator screens, sash cords, etc is sometimes a problem in the "Big box" hardware stores. Here it is all at your fingertips. I also love that the place is always overstaffed so I don't need to search out someone to help me- they find me. Or how about the fact that they carry your purchases to your car? Who does that anymore? I used Village Ace Hardware when I lived in Milwaukee years ago and continue to count on them to have the parts for the various rental properties that I still have in the area. Now if only I could only get one of those nice hardware men to come over to my properties and actually do the work for me . . . .well- that would be a 6 star rating!!! read more

They have paint. And blinds. And some other chemicals and stuff. It's an extension of Village Ace Hardware; connected, and next door. Village Paint & Design is Village Ace Hardware's paint cave. Conveniently located off of Port Washington just north of Bayshore's Town Village Square Mall commerce party, I only happened upon Village Paint & Design because my landlord has an account there, and preferred colors are the only ones he'll pay for. The pantry was in desperate need of re-painting and we couldn't wait, so off we went to Glendale to pick up a gallon of "Sail Cloth," two brushes, a roller, and some tape courtesy of Eric. Luke's been in that pantry all day while I've been working. Thanks Luke! So, this spot itself: Fine and well, I suppose. Nothing stood out about service or selection in this paint cave. (Although they do have about a BAZILLION COLORS when it comes to spray paint, and they even have tiny little baby spray paints too, which made me squee like an idiot because I like tiny things.) Anyways: I can't imagine I won't be back since it seems to be our landlord's go-to, but I honestly felt between service and selection that our experience at VP&D was simply A-OK. He got it ready ready for me and showed me how to use it. Every single time I have gone here the staff has been very helpful and friendly. Very personable atmosphere, mom and pop shop. This is our go-to hardware store. Don't assume that they won't have what you need just because they are not a huge warehouse like Home Depot. Village Ace Idiots!!! I have used them before for my older snow blower. They fixed it for nearly $400 and took over a month. I had to call and ask them why it was taking so long. That was a 1.5yrs ago. It works great but was really disappointed with price and time. I gave them another shot, 2 weeks ago, my 2y/o mower would not start, it kept puttering. I send it in (I do love their free p/u and delivery specials). I get a call telling me it needs a carburetor and blade/switch, cost $220. I tell them I will c/b. I call and tell them to proceed but I want my parts, something just felt off. The repair person seemed shocked I wanted them. So I Chk with my son, an engineer who had already ruled out the carb to confirm it was fine. Indeed it is. I call back again, another guy answers the phone, I tell him I do NOT need a new carb I already had it checked out. Instead of changing the repair sheet, he proceeded to "educate" me on not only what a carb does but that leaving gas in it causes condensation and rust. IK he did not look at it because the tank was BONE DRY and my son had already ruled out the carb. Once I tell him IK what a carb does, he kept talking until I cut him off and told him "THIS IS WHAT WILL HAPPEN..." after instructing him they do NOT have authorization to remove/repair my carb, to only repair the blade/switch, he acknowledged and hung up. I got it back today, the driver was told to start the mower prior to payment. It started in 2 secs. My point here is I feel they took me being a woman for granted merely from the way the guy tried to sell me a carb I didnt need and the other tried mans-plain the unnecessary repair to me when he didnt even review my machine. Bottom line is LADIES especially, ASK for your old parts just like a car and be sure you are not being taken for granted. If I had not known better it would have cost me an extra $100. NOT COOL!!! Final total was $103. Which is what I should have been quoted on the 1st call. I may use again but I am NOT sure I can ever trust them again. read more

I rented a Bissell carpet cleaner here. It looked clean on the outside, but NOT on the inside or roller. I spent 30 minutes cleaning it and pulling out large chunks of black stuff before I could get started. Gross! I am very disappointed with my experience. So it was my birthday weekend and my girlfriend and I were heading back to Milwaukee from where we grew up and she accidently hit a orange cone and knocked off our drivers side mirror completely off. BUMMER. We decided to skip the increasingly expensive auto repair shops and order it ourselves on GoParts.com. Once it arrived we had somewhat of a clue on how to put it on but needed the proper tool to get it off. We both decided to skip Walmart and Home Depot to try a good ole hardware store. We have an Ace Hardware in the little town we grew up in and hoped it would be just as useful and friendly service as back home! And it was! And more! We both had no idea what type of wrench we needed, just knew that we needed it as it is illegal to drive without a drivers side mirror. The staff was incredibly friendly and I believe it was either the manager or the owner who helped us out. He even brought a few wrench sizes out to our car to make sure it was the right size. I prefer to shop at the local joints, and even though Ace is a national brand, the store is a local store. I will gladly pay more to buy something here than at Home Depot, or some other large mega home improvement store. You are never more than a few steps from someone to help you find what you're looking for, or to get advice about a project. Here is another reason why doing business with independent, smaller hardware stores like Ace is best for the consumer - as well as the community. I brought in a programmable (chipped) car key blank that I had purchased online to be cut. Because the blank was not an ideal match, the key did not cut properly. Rather than sending me on my way, the man cutting keys took extra time to fund a proper blank, cut it and accompany me to my car to program the key and make sure it worked properly. The charge was very reasonable. But even if it had been in excess of what another big box store might have charged, the expertise and hands-on assistance made doing business with this store a far better choice. read more

I agree. This is the kind of hardware store I remember from my youth. More like a neighborhood place. Since moving back to Wisconsin from the East Coast, after having been gone 30 years, it was great to find a place like this still going. My wife is a realtor on the North Shore and is always recommending this to the folks who buy homes from her. The big box hardware guys may have more selection, but noone can match the customer service here. And besides, if there is something I need they don't have I can always get it online. read more

The team at Village Paint and Design were great. Their inventory was stocked and hours were convenient when looking for Benjamin Moore Paint that has been difficult to find on a Sunday. I was at a different Ace store which was out of the paint I needed and then did not send me out with the correct information to use when I did go to Village. So the team at Village was helpful in getting me all the paint and primer I need and gave me a discount for the inconvenience of the other Ace being out of the paint we found out later the information sent was incorrect and they were understanding to allow me to exchange the already mixed paint. The team was helpful and friendly and I would go back to get other supplies and ask them for advice. read more

We specifically drove past Home Depot to work with this local store. I needed two keys made. We had to wait about ten minutes for service. I asked for two copies. Ten minutes and the clerk handed me an envelope and charged me. I paid 2.99. Then I opened the envelope and found only one key. I had to wait another ten minutes before someone else waited on me to make the second key, which took only a few minutes. Then he sent me to stand in line at a different register to be charged. They charged me 4.29 for this key. It took several minutes before someone who could 'handle returns' came up. He then flatly said, that he had to charge me more for the second key, because they were out of the blanks for the key I wanted, and only had the more expensive blanks with larger handles. No apology for the foul up, the waiting, and not telling me that it would cost more for the second key. Also, turns out one of these new keys doesn't work in the side door on the van. I could have saved several dollars using an automated key copy machine at Home Depot. read more

I want to let Ace Hardware know what a great employee they have in HOMI. First of all, he is always polite and considerate. However most importantly he knows his job better than anyone else . If you have a problem with any of your yard or housing needs, Homi is the man to go to. Although most of the employees are very nice Homi stands out because he can always solve problems and or find what you are looking for in the store. Homi explains things very well and he seems happy with his job. These days it is hard to find someone as qualified as Homi. It is also hard to find someone that is friendly and always has a smile. It is always great to do business at Ace on Port Washington because of people like Homi. read more

I had a key made for my Toyota and the manufacturer was going to charge $300 while Ace charged $4.00, without the remote opening function. The key department helped me out right away and the personnel were so nice! I love this store! read more

I love this shop. They have an enormous amount of stock cleverly packed into a moderately sized store, and the prices are good enough that it is not worth walking miles through a big box to get what is often a small reduction. Part of the operation is the Ben Moore paint store next door, and I never use anything else. At my time of writing (April '12) they have a long-term sale on Benjamin Moore Regal Select low-VOC, our favorite in this house (tho' we always use a primer despite the fact that Select will let you skip that step in a pinch). Advice in both stores is friendly and sound; in the paint store this is essential. read more
