DO NOT RECOMMEND this hardware store. Refused to provide my return of an item (which was $7) because I mistakenly walked into the store with my previously purchased item and walked pasted their waist level sign saying "no returns beyond this point". This was my 2nd time in the store and it will be my final. I have never had someone accuse me of stealing, especially with no reason to do so. It was an honest mistake. End all be all, Greg (the floor manager) clearly hates women, not to mention I'm 8 months pregnant - he confiscated my item (because he couldn't confirm that I didn't take it off the shelf - even though I didn't go near that isle) and refused to refund my $7. He claims because it was in a bag he could not confirm that I didn't take the item that day and "his count was off". Pretty much I walked in and was robbed myself. If you need a car key, you have to make an appointment? What? I was told Tuesday or Thursday from 1 PM to 2:30 PM and that sounded outrageous. I just left and went down the road to a locksmith and it was $20 less expensive and not a problem. read more

One of my skeletons needed hip surgery. In my naivety, I thought it was just a matter of carefully placing a surgical screw in the hip bone to connect it to the leg bone and I did. I didn't use anything to stop the screw from passing all the way through the plastic. I carefully buckled skeleton in the passenger seat of my truck and took him to Elliott's Ace Hardware to find the right size screw. Well, the surgical procedure was much more complicated than I had anticipated. I was lucky two specialists were on duty at Elliott's Ace Hardware, to assist in the complicated procedure. I usually have a pleasant experience at Ace in West Allis. Now I understand that when you ask for help it can be hard for the Associate understand what you need before they can help. My problem is with Dave in Plumbing who rides around in a cart. From the moment he started helping he immediately started out being negative. Telling how the PVC pipe in my home was going to be outlawed and that basically I was screwed. Then when I described what I needed which I thought was fairly simple if they had the right connectors. He seemed confused about what I needed then he seemed to understand but then lose it. Going as far at one time to giving me the same part I brought in. Well it was a long drawn out affair until he just out of the blue told me to bring a plan. What plan? Anyway I got help in 5 minutes at Home Depot. I needed a fitting that took a 3/8s compression to a Half Inch male on one side. Then on the other side of my connector I needed a 3/8s Compression to a female Half inch. I put a Water Filter under my sink and it used 3/8s compression connectors and my house has Half inch. Wasted a couple hours because he kept sending me home to get him info. It was surreal looking back I almost think he was just messing with me the whole time. Bad Experience. They told me he was crotchety but new his stuff. I think he may not be thinking very well anymore. Unless he was just jerking me around. Very unpleasant individual. read more

Scammed on Paint prices. Big hot pink sale sign under the paint I'm purchasing but no one at the paint counter wanted to let me know the color I was choosing did not qualify for the sale, even though that was specifically why I chose that paint. Very shady would avoid them for paint. read more

Fantastic experience in the repairs department. Snow blower broke Wednesday night. They came and picked it up Thursday early afternoon free of charge. They delivered it back Friday afternoon and were so easy to work with. Very reasonable and do not try and overcharge you for the work they do. Totally recommend all around. As much as I want to support a local business, they've lost me as a customer. After purchasing over $100 in (apparently) discontinued/obsolete Christmas lights last year, I've been on a runaround with Sylvania, the local store, and then Ace Corporate to try to find a reasonable resolution. Sylvania was in disbelief that the store even had these lights on-hand and told us to reach out to the local store. The local store management pointed towards their "great" 90-day return policy (which really shouldn't be relevant to something you use once a year...) and told us to reach out to corporate if we wanted to take it further. After reaching out to corporate, we were told we can only work with the local store since they are independently run. I can see their perspective on not honoring a return a year later (even though we still have all boxes and the receipt), if it were not for the light sets being 5 years old at the time of purchase. They also claim that they were discounted when we purchased them, but that's irrelevant - they should have been sold at some sort of clearance/obsolete price - not something that indicated it was just a normal sale. Do your research before buying items - especially holiday decor - from Ace if it's something you'll want to use year after year. read more

Compared to the big box stores in the area, this store is expensive. That being said, there is just something about this store that keeps drawing me back. That something is called customer service. There are no teenagers working here; every employee has a little life experience under their belt and can therefore sympathize with the problem you present them with. More often than not, they can even help you fix said problem and offer up a few alternatives just in case your first attempt doesn't work. You remember that great neighborhood hardware store from when you were a kid? It's still open in West Allis, WI ... Elliott's Ace of West Allis is one of several branch stores for Elliott's, varying in size. West Allis is sufficiently large that it has most of the stuff that is present in Elm Grove (I believe the largest/home store). We have a smaller branch closer to us, but I seem to end up at West Allis fairly frequently. Ace is more of a hardware store than a "home improvement" store, so if I'm looking for large lumber, I'm generally off to Menard's, otherwise, one of the Ace stores is usually my first stop. The staff is experienced and friendly, just like that store you remember as a kid. While you wouldn't expect it from a small store, there are frequently times when they offer the best deal. For example, earlier this year, we installed a battery backup sump pump, Ace branded, for $169 - looked to be, aside from color and label, the same exact product Home Depot was selling under the Basement Watchdog brand for $239! That is certainly the most dramatic example I've seen lately, but sometimes it pays to consider a store many see as "more expensive". If you live near them, they're definitely worth a stop in. read more

Traeger Platinum store, which means parts and service. The service as lacking amongst all employees. They ordered a Digital Pro Controller for my wife, as a gift for me on Father's Day. My grill required a RTD sensor to make this unit work. I went to the store with the part number and asked the women in the grill department if I could order said part. She explained that they did not order parts for customers. I said they did for my wife. She handed me a card with Traeger's support line and walked away. She just wanted to see me out. Really disappointing as they have a lot of Traeger accessories and parts. I will say my wife had a great experience ordering the digital pro controller. I suppose when the part is over $100, they are happy to place an order. Smaller parts, good luck if it's not on their shelf. read more

Each department boasts a huge selection (who knew there were so many lightbulbs), varied price point and very knowledgable and mostly friendly staff. The paint department is fantastic and has a great selection of colors and styles of paint. They cut keys and screens. They have cool housewares like some of the thing my Grandmother loved like cast iron. And they have great deals on old school candy at the checkout lanes! I'm now retired but in my working days I was a service tech who handled financial institutions repairing safes, vaults, pneumatic drive ups, alarm systems, video systems, cash handling machines, you name it. As luck would have it I'd often find some obscure part would be defective or worn out and the manufacturer either would offer the broken part with either a long wait time or it would be very expensive. And many times the part was no longer available at which time I would head over to Elliott's; If they didn't have the exact part, they often had something that would work. It may be hard to believe that people come from near and far just to visit a hardware store, but that just shows you haven't been to Elliot's. This place is probably about 10x the average size of a hardware store, and has 10x the variety. Joe and I came here after we'd moved into the new house and needed all the things. This place has everything from grills and windchimes, to bee killer and extension cords, from candles to curtain rods and back again - wrap all your stops into one and just swing through here. They give you 90 days to return merchandise - but be aware that you HAVE to return the item before crossing the gate into the store, or returns will not be accepted; this is an understandable clause, but I almost missed the signs! Great clearance areas and even more helpful staff - worth the drive to come out to this Ace. read more

Nobody in this store knows what the time period for a warranty is. You get transferred from one person to another on the phone. They don't go out of their way to find hangups on an order. I would have bought my Stihl mower at Neu's hardware but they were out. Extremely uncaring and unhelpful people in this store. I don't know if they can't get help or refuse to go the extra mile anymore but I was sure put under alot of stress just to get a lawn mower bag replaced. After being directed all the way to the back of the store and waiting way too long I find out the one thing I'm looking for is actually in the front of the store. Even then after waiting again for someone to come and unlock a $4 socket They can't find a 13/32 socket. I figured ace is a small store so being in a hurry I could run and get the socket that I just broke and make it back in time to finish before dark. Ace is probably my favorite store PERIOD and as disappointed as I was with my trip to buy the wrong socket I refuse to give them a bad rating. I bought a Stihl chainsaw from Elliott Ace. During the first use I had a hard time starting it. I took it back and they said sometimes they come from the factory with bad carburetors (Go Stihl). So they replaced the carburetor. The next time I used it, it started but would die after 45 seconds. They checked it again said it's good to go. I only use a chainsaw every few months, so the next time I tried to use it and couldn't start it had been over 3 months. Then they just blew me off. They made a little money off of me but lost my business for life. Now I have a $300 paper weight! read more

"Why don't you try Ace Hardware, they have everything!" While they didn't quite have what I was looking for, I was told why it wasn't available, and what I could do instead.
