seeing as how the owner responded to my review nearly 3 years later asking me to elaborate on what all was done, i had them run brake/shifting cables and mount some tires. i brought in the tubes, tires, and cables. i just asked for them to do the labor. the quote was not for a tune up, i specifically explained that i would be bringing in tubes, tires, and break/shifting cables that i purchased for some work i never got around to doing and asked how much it would be to mount the tubes/tires and run the cables. i was quoted $70, just to make sure i repeated myself again and was told that was the price for exactly what i was needing done. then i was charged over double the quote price. trinity on grand actually mounted some tubes and tires for me for free recently, i'd recommend taking your business there. read more

My bike had been sitting unused for almost 2 years. So I took it out for a practice spin and the front axle broke. I quickly took it to Village Bike Shop and they did a tuneup and fixed the axle in about 2 hours - for a very reasonable price. When the valve on a tube broke the next day and I brought the bike back to the shop - they fixed it in 5 minutes and did not charge although I offered. What a great shop with great people working there. It is a big asset for the Arroyo Grande, CA village. read more

Danny at Village Bike was AMAZING in helping my 6 year old with his BMX bike. He patiently explained what needed to be done and fixed the bike and scooter. He showed my grandson how some parts on the bike worked and spent extra time with him. Then when I tried to pay him, he refused to take money for either his time or the parts he used. I will ALWAYS use Danny for our future bike needs. I hope they can get a *handle* on business before they derail it. My husband and I recently moved to the SLO County area after living abroad for over 4 years. He was very happy that all he needed was tubing. His wheels were slightly cracked, but the owner of the shop was very forthcoming and informed him that it would still be safe to ride the bike. Village Bike Shop makes living in Arroyo Grande even sweeter! Danny (the new owner of this shop) is super laid back and an experienced repairman. I recently found a little project bike on CL and immediately took it to this shop, Danny was finishing up with another customer and graciously took a look at my new (to me at least) Trek roadbike, it needed a front tube and tire, he just happened to have EXACTLY what I needed and even proceeded to install it for me while my precocious nephew and I chatted away with him. It was so sweet really, Danny is friendly and in no hurry to rush us out of the shop and totally didn't mind all the touching and questions a curious 9-yr old might have at a bike shop! So, yes...VERY kid friendly too! We loved looking at his collection of vintage bikes, electric bikes and accessories for hitting the road...this shop has pretty much all you might need for summertime biking fun. :) This shop has changed owners and is no longer "Ira's" but it has a great vibe and is a wonderful addition to the village. We let him know we were leaving town that day so if he could have them done in the am it would be appreciated! We saw how many bikes he had so we totally understood. I had a fun encounter today. I parked behind the shop, met a friend for lunch and was going to return to the bike shop to buy me and my 2 kids mountain bikes (nice ones as a New Year's resolution to get healthier, had $1,000 to spend). Instead, when I went to my car to leave my food in it, I was met by a very rude employee who told me they had called a towing company to tow my car for parking in one of their 5 (yes I counted) open spots (mind you there were no customers in the shop either). Because of this lack of basic customer service skills let alone human decency, I will happily take my $1,000 to another shop in SLO. Where do I begin?...I've been shopping at Ira's bike shop, working alongside the down-to-earth, friendly and extremely helpful Nolan and Adrian, for so long they memorized my cell number by heart for orders (very cool!). I can't recall any experience that has been subpar and thus I continue to return time after time knowing that any mechanical questions or bike related issues will be resolved before I leave the store. Extremely knowledgeable, so damn easy to work with, and hardworking business owners who represent the small biz and local bike shop industry exceptionally well. No doubt. I will happily continue my business with Ira's Bike shop (till I die over) and refer them to friends, family and visitors because of their hands-down best service and product. These guys rock! A fun and funky old shop crammed with bikes, parts, knowledge, and good will. I took an old Cannondale Raven I had just purchased into Ira's after another shop did not want to bother with such an old bike with outdated/odd components unless I wanted to update a lot of parts. These guys took it in, no hesitations, talked over what was wrong and what it might take to fix it. They gave me a worst case (several components needing replacement) and best case (they might be able to fix some of it) and said they would call the next day with an estimate after looking at it closer. They actually did call as promised! They said it was almost done but they needed to order some new brake pads and I could pick it up in two days. I called back in two days and, as promised, it was ready. They charged me some labor to fix a bunch of small stuff; adjust the derailuers, bring a shift lever back to life, "tune up" the bike, and replace the front brake pads (the other shop wanted to "update" the front brakes with a new system for $100). I talked with the mechanic a few minutes and he gave me some information on the bike, weak spots to look out for, what components had a history of problems, which ones were good. Since I bought used he assured me it was in good shape and the price I paid was a rocking deal. A few suggestions on where to ride (I am new to the area) and I was off into the sunset! Total bill? Under $60! These guys have a new customer! Parking seemed to be easy, plentiful, and free, plus it is a fun old town area. Think bike history and a family shop, not a shinny new big box store with carpet on the floor and high overhead. read more

I was feeling a bit desperate today seeking a bike shop. I'm from out of town and hastily left California Central Valley in 112 degree heat seeking a weekend of cool weather and cycling. In my haste I forgot to bring my cycling air pump. My road bike likes 100-120 pounds of pressure. My visit to Walmart on the way into town Friday evening I found a pump and a helmet (yeah I forgot that too). ... It was hot! I started my ride in the early morning on only 60 pounds of pressure. I was hoping to pass a bike shop to fill my tires more (gas stations don't go that high). I Googled to find Ira's Bike Shop. They weren't open when I rode past at 6:50 AM on the first ride of the day. My wife gave me a pass to go ahead and spend another night because I'm training for an upcoming ride. After lunch I headed out again knowing I still needed air and would need more Chamois Butter for the intended ride the next day. I walked into Ira's and I was greeted with a big smile and "What can I do for you". I explained my desire and was directed to the bicycle pump placed by the door for anyone's use anytime. Great. I also asked to make the purchase I desired. He was very helpful explaining the various products while we engaged in friendly conversation. I was offered the product gratis. I explained that I have money and wanted to pay. He could see I'm riding an expensive bike. Still he said "The Boss says this is for you. Have a great ride". WOW! I shared this story with my Father-in-Law afterward. He told me he had been in there several times and he was always kind and helpful. I would definitely go back to Ira's. This all happened today. After the longest ride of my life (only 87 mi) I'm pretty tired and sore, but I couldn't go to sleep without first thanking Ira for being the best part of my day. read more
