Incredible selection, nothing I smelled has the "thrift store smell." The prices are unbelievably low. I purchased numerous lovely & soft shirts and sweaters, everything $1-8 each. I didn't bother trying anything on so I can't attest for if there are fitting rooms or not. I only spent time in maybe 3 aisles & I ended up purchasing ~15 high quality items! Imagine if I checked every aisle - I'd have to build a new closet! Short line, almost negligible in how quickly it took me to see the cashier. One item didn't have a tag on it & he said I can return the next day once the price is configured, but I'm not staying in the area so I decided to let another lucky thrifter find that joy of an incredibly soft, lilac crewneck sweater. I've been coming to this Roscoe Village location for a while and sometimes I find "decently priced items" but the audacity of this top that still had the $7.50 clearance sticker on it from the original store (looks like Target) and theyre selling it for $12.59... like- if youre going to cheat the customer- at least rip off the clearance sticker on it... A decent resale shop with a large selection of most items. Cleaner than most resale shops and a friendly staff. Not hard to find items as they are arranged very well and isles are labeled clearly and neatly lined on the racks. The prices are reasonable as you can get and you can surely discover a few hidden gems here if you put the work in. One big notice here is that the staff is constantly hustling around the store. You will see them cleaning and rearranging racks constantly unlike my at resale shops. Kudos to the staff. read more

BEWARE OF THE SCAM PARKING LOT. I was booted while shopping. I went directly into the store and directly back to my car. The attendant claimed he witnessed me walk past the store and tried to intimidate and harass me. If you're going to park there, I suggest recording yourself walking in and out of the store and checking in with employees who can vouch that you're there. Otherwise it's $170! I LOVE village discount, am a loyal customer, they're my favorite thrift stores in the whole city and I visit one at least once each week. But I am now reconsidering my support. The corporate number said they have nothing to do with the parking company and would not help me. The manager was sympathetic but just directed me to the corporate number. It took calling the police, the alderman, the main parking lot number Michael, and getting another store shopper to come out and vouch for me to get him to take it off. She said the same thing happened to her! He's a creepy preying on women. I've heard the recordings over and over "our contract with global parking does not allow customers to visit any other establishment..." I respect y'all and I would never do that. Amazing! Seriously so many good finds at this spot. It definitely is a place you want to take your time at especially if you don't have anything in mind. I was able to find some vintage jeans that fit PERFECTLY and they were less than $5 each!!! I also made a trip previously and found 4 sweaters for $20 total. I have found great kitchen and home items in the basement as well. I never want to buy anything new again!! It feels great to buy and repurpose things and not spend too much money. I went to the village discount in Chicago heights and found a nice leather and fur coat for 36 dollars only to be accused of changing the price, like who walks around with a stapler and marker to change prices on items in a thrift store! I shop here all the time, and unfortunately one thing that never changes is the cleanliness of the store. During my last shopping trip, I bought a bag of toys (Barbie dolls), and when I opened the bag on the way home, I had seen baby roaches entangled in each of the dolls' hair, and they were still ALIVE. Thankfully I noticed before heading home so I had time to just toss the entire bag and its contents into a trash bin outside, far away from our apartment. It was hard to notice them in the store since the dolls' hair were each very knotted and messy, and I was inspecting the bag for minutes before purchasing. I was only able to see them when I opened it up to unknot their hair, and they started to come out of hiding. Had I noticed them in the store, I wouldn't have purchased them. So I ended up wasting money since the store doesn't accept returns, and they had to be thrown away. I wasn't going to risk infesting our home with German roaches. Keep in mind they were roach nymphs so they were very small and not fully developed, almost translucent in color, very easy to miss if you're not looking. Honestly terrified to buy anything else again from this place. Inspect everything you buy before you buy it. And anyone saying that their store is very clean must have low standards when it comes to cleanliness because this store always smells like a flood combined with fart, especially in the basement. This did not ever change, not even during the pandemic. The only good thing about them is that their prices are cheaper than most other thrift stores, but you also get what you pay for. Everything is cheaper, but also much filthier since nothing is organized and things are just thrown on top of each other, literally. Kids toys are kept in the same bins as cables, sewing needles, wigs, kitchen knives, and pieces of wood and nails. read more

Have loved this place for quite some time. However, they've recently enforced a complete scam private parking company to enforce parking boots on cars at their leisure. The whole situation is a joke. When the parking lot "officer" approaches you and your booted vehicle, they state they are recording the whole interaction via body cam. It's such a gimmick. Do not give these people access to your information (card information, name, or address). Unfortunately the only (safe, in my opinion) way to get to them to take the boot off is to pay them via Apple Cash. The cuck that scammed me told me that he acknowledged that I donated four full duffel bags of clothes, and went inside the store to shop, and yet because I went for a walk afterwards instead of coming straight back to the parking lot, I'm liable to be fined $170. Village Discount Outlet had the Super Bowl weekend sale on Saturday (01/31/2015) and Sunday (02/01/2015). All merchandize was half off the price tag. Hey, I'm in! As many of you know, thrift shopping on an extra discount day can be adventurous and requires lots of patience. Thanks to my mommy who gave me a great temperament so that I can survive in thrift shopping. This location is the first one that I encountered has the "guard" on both entrance and exit, meaning that an entrance is really the entrance; an exit is really the exit. Those doors aren't interchangeable. Their private parking lot is strictly for patrons-only; don't follow the rule, should your vehicle be booted and towed immediately. This location gets lots of young blood since the Lakeview neighborhood is adjacent to the Roscoe Village neighborhood. It was cool to see some young men and young ladies came out to enjoy themselves with experiencing fashion in different eras. Shopping at any Village Discount Outlet requires a keen eye. How keen? I would say freakin' keen because they organize their apparel by colors. However, the color-coordinating organizations tend be destroyed quickly by careless customers who didn't put back their unwanted merchandize back to where it belongs. I don't literally go through "every" piece of apparel myself, but I can spot some possibilities within seconds after seeing them. I'm professional, so what can I say? As I have mentioned before on my other reviews on other Village a Discount Outlet locations, their selections on blazers are pretty decent. However, this location really has one of the worst smells, especially on their basement where shoes, housewares, and electronic gadgets are. I went downstairs and didn't really stay too long. I might need to bring my own oxygen mask to shop downstairs, seriously. I didn't see much $0.10 merchandize left. We came in late afternoon, so the majority should have been bought during the day. Other than the smell, this locations seems to get a lot of traffic and aisles are narrow. I still scored a Cubs beanie for $2 and hubby snatched a cable for his video game monitor for $0.49! It's a passable location, as long as you're ok with the smell. read more

I haven't written a review on thrift stores yet... so this will be my first, here goes! There are lots of great things about this Village Discount Outlet. I've been thrifting for a long, long time so I feel quite at home browsing through racks upon racks of clothes until my arms get tired. That being said, this is one of the nicer Village Discounts I've been to. AMBIANCE: Normally I go to the one on 3301 Lawrence, but this one is "up a notch" in terms of cleanliness, an additional basement level, quantity of clothing and music (they had great variety of music on the speakers... which makes a difference!) Perhaps the feel of this thrift store reflects more of the persona of Roscoe Village/Lakeview. I'm no local expert on Chicago neighborhoods, but this Village Discount felt more "posh" and would be a place where I'd be completely comfortable taking a friend who needs an introduction to the world of thrifting, without being totally overwhelmed. THE BROWSING EXPERIENCE: To start off, it smelled like Febreeze as I browsed through the aisles. Woot! A little air freshener made a huge difference, and the (very normal) grimy feeling I get after touching all the clothes felt... less grimy. Tis the life of a thrifter. No biggie. The clothes were neatly hung, grouped in an orderly fashion and they had a large selection of women's blouses and business professional clothing. I came here specfically looking for work attire, and I did not leave disappointed. Their selection of collared women's blouses is very large. (As is their children's clothing section, and their shoe selection which is in the basement) It was difficult to find my size, but I left with a work outfit for less than $4.00! I browsed through most of the women's selection in about an hour. Again, very clean, very "well-presented"... like a thrift shop on its best behavior. PARKING: There is a private lot just for shoppers West of the building on Roscoe. On the speakerphones they will routinely announce that you MUST return STRAIGHT to your car after leaving the store or your tires will be booted. They really do not want people to abuse their parking privileges... but to make it seem less stern, their message is dispersed throughout a playlist of Beyonce, a song in Spanish, a hit from the 80s and a 90s alternative. THE POINT BEING... This place is well kept, clean, has a great selection and a vibe that leans towards that of a department store. I'm glad I found another thrift shop in Chicagoland and hopefully it will be one of my regular spots. read more

WHAT THE HELL? This place is like SO CHEAP. I went in just for a kick on my little shopping trip up and down this quaint street and... SERIOUSLY, this place is SO CHEAP. And not like cheap like your friend who won't tip, I mean like super affordable. Okay, it's a bit overwhelming, there's just rack after rack not really organized by size so that's not my favorite, but still. SO CHEAP. It's worth the digging through the stack. I found a high end brand blazer for... wait for it.... marked at $2.24 BUT IT WAS HALF OFF. SO for about a buck, I got a nice blazer to wear to an interview and I used spare change. There were coats for about $12, like puffy down, in style, black naturally, COATS FOR LESS THAN 1/10th what they cost new. I'd say plan to spend a few hours here and get yourself a whole new wardrobe for about $100. read more

This is the best village discount location I've been to. Every time I go in I find something interesting or adorable, and they are very fairly priced. Despite having so much clothing, they never seem overly disorganized or messy. Most of the reviews I've been reading complain about the parking lot, which I haven't had an issue with. If you are concerned about it, just park on the street, there are plenty of free spots in the neighborhood. Highly recommend this location. read more

This place was really grimy and a lot of things were overpriced. I think my friend and I enjoyed the basement goodies the most. But then kids, womens, and men's shoes take up a lot of the basement so there's always that stinky used shoe smell lingering around. I didn't buy anything here. As for the people commenting about the parking lot. Just don't be stupid. It's parking for the VDO shoppers...not a free public lot for the neighborhood. Hate to say this store is not worth the scam parking lot company they've partnered up with. We used the Starbucks bathroom and then shopped at the store and went directly to our car. We had spoken to the lot attendant first and asked the rules and he just said if we shopped at the store we were good. When we came back after spending $80 in the store, he had booted the car and insisted he photograph my credit card and drivers license while refusing to show me any identification. His badge and vest he put on for the show, but when we pulled into the lot he was just in a Tshirt. A disgusting business partnership that makes me now want to boycott Village Discount. read more

I'm new to the neighborhood but have been thrifting for many years & worked in a thrift store for 3 years. I walked to this location so I can't speak to the parking situation, but they do have regular announcements in both English & Spanish about parking rules . This is a large well organized thrift store. Clothes are mixed sizes but grouped by category & color (t-shirts, button downs etc) They've got a good selection of linens (which is what I was looking for), clothes for the entire family, shoes, purses, Jewelry etc. it's not Target so don't expect it to be squeaky clean, and downstairs by the pillow section is pretty smelly (thus 4 not 5 stars) but the prices were reasonable & they have daily sales on different color tags. This place is big so be prepared to spend some time going through the store .The woman who checked me out was the only employee that I interacted with and she was polite. All in all a pretty good store with good selection. I will definitely return. read more

Disgusting smell when you walk in - over priced clothes /items-alot of the clothing looks like it should be thrown in the garbage. I needed to use the restroom while I was there and the whole back area is so filthy, with empty cups,plastic bottles and garbage thrown on the floor next to the bathroom. The toilet was backed up and full of human waste and urine! This place should be shut down by the City of Chicago!! I forgot to take photos but please go look for yourself! This is a predatory business practice, as all signs warning of this are in English only, when Village Discount Outlet is a store that is heavily frequented by non-native English speakers, or even those who do not speak English at all. Their housewares section is totally gross, you can do much better at Salvation Army or a Brown Elephant type place. Not here. You can find some really nice stuff here, and it is ultra cheap. I found a beautiful red winter coat. All I have to do is replace the buttons and it is good to go...for $12. Gotta have time to dig. In a great part of town, if you need energy there are about 12 restaurants you could hit up in a one block radius... So....go! Find something. It's an event. This is my favorite Village Discount Outlet. Sure you have to breathe through your mouth when you shop in the Bargain Basement, but it's worth it for the great deals. I don't know if it's the nice neighborhood or what, but this is the one where I get the best baby clothes, winter hats and toys. If you are a reader, this store has a HUGE selection of books. New books, classics, etc. They are not organized by subject or title, but they are clearly visible on a huge back wall so you can easily browse. Not much for kids books is the one downfall. I have also found some great art at this store. I bought a framed painting of three bears and when I got home I googled the artist and found out it was several hundred dollars! Plus its super cool. Yeah, I think bears are cool. The kids do run pretty wild in this store which can be annoying. And really is not safe for the kids. Watch out for pickpockets too! You know the expression "curiosity killed the cat"? Well, that saying was made for situations like the one I was in this afternoon. I was wandering down Roscoe, saw this place, and decided to stop in. Don't get me wrong, I knew it wasn't Bloomies, but I thought they might have a scale (I've decided my bathroom needs a scale and don't want to go to Target as that involves walking under an overpass - EWW!). So, yeah, curiosity led me into this store where, from the second I entered, I was seriously on edge. I suppose that makes it "curiosity made the cat want to kill herself" or "curiosity made the cat fear imminent death from a highly-contagious communicable disease", but I digress. Back to our story. By now, dear reader, you are wondering why I stayed. Well... they have used books. Used books are like crack to me. I'm a total junkie. Books were marked 25 cents each or 5 for a dollar. Bargain! I grabbed two Mary Higgins Clark (can't go wrong with MHC!) and headed to the cash register. The lady in front of me had purchased two large glass vases, in addition to a host of other stuff. VDO packages its wares in garbage bags for shoppers to take home. The woman had to have an awkward screaming fight with the cashier to be allowed to wrap her vases so they wouldn't be smashed. All the while I'm humming to myself and thinking "booksbooksbooksbooks". It will be over soon. It's my turn. Mr. Friendly at the cash register announces that my total is "twenty-eight". Now, I'm no math major, but I'm pretty sure 2 books at 25 cents each does not "twenty-eight" make. "Twenty-eight cents?" I inquire? "You want to pay twenty-eight dollars?!" Mr. Friendly bellows back. This place rules!! It's one of the better VDOs I've seen with a great of name brand clothing. Like some other thrifts, it's divided into sections then sorted by color. I love this format as it saves time finding what you're looking for. They have a no tag-no sale policy since so many people have tried to pull a fast one and get a lower price on more premium names. Unlike most Sal Army locations, customer service is about non existent. Everything soft in the basement is a little iffy. Honestly, there are old shoes down there that have cobwebs INSIDE them. You have to wonder when they decide to just throw some of them out. It does smell like mildew, so that's something. read more

Went here the other day with my friends, honestly I haven't been since high school when I used to buy little boy tshirts to wear because it was cool. It was just as I remembered it, smelled a bit (its a thrift store) but it was huge. Things were decently organized (color scheme) and the prices were dirt cheap. I found a leather bag for $3 that I have been using everyday since! (Plus whoever donated it left some $ in it... sweet!) I'd recommend going to the VD if you have some time on your hands or know what you are looking for.
