I like Village Inn's food which is why I keep coming back, but the service is often lacking (not always, there are some good servers there). My main complaint is that they treat you like you're bothering them just by entering the restaurant. When we went yesterday we literally couldn't get the manager who sat us & checked us out at the end to even speak to us. I don't expect anybody to roll out the red carpet for me but it's really off putting and rude to just ignore people to their face. This type of stuff almost always happens when we come here and I have to wonder if it's because of the way we look or something, because I can see the same staff members being pleasant and friendly to other customers. read more

My son and I decided to stop in for dinner last night. Neither of us had been there since before the pandemic. I was dismayed to find that it had been redecorated and it wasn't an improvement. Gone were the cheerful colors, replaced by a drab gray, brown and orange with sparse decoration. I ordered coffee and the waitress didn't ask me if I wanted cream, thus she didn't bring any and sat 20 ft. away from us, folding napkins. I had to get up and go to her to ask for some. They used to include soup or a salad with their entrees and no long do. The food was the same as always, which was fine. The waitress put a receipt on our table without asking if we wanted dessert. We ordered pie. I wanted whipped cream on my pumpkin pie and I was refused when I asked for some. I found out from the (manager? host?) that I could have gotten some for 42 cents extra. At this point, it was an hour before closing and our waitress used a noisy sweeper right next to our table instead of waiting a few minutes for us to leave. She was more intent on performing her other duties than serving her customers. To top it off, no one asked us how everything was. It's not likely I will ever come back. read more

I asked the waitress if I could order 2 eggs, some corn beef hash, and a slice of toast. She said oh yes that is actually on the menu. I said okay. My sister ordered the Cornbeef hash and eggs For $13.55. It came with 2 eggs, hash browns with cheese, 2 buttermilk pancakes, and toast. When our bill was handed to us it showed my meal as $15.00. The food here is great. It's always busy so not the quietest place to eat. The service is often harried, rushed, and sometimes just absent. I can recommend the blueberry pancakes but not the scrambled eggs. From the outside this place doesn't look like much. It looks like your plan Denny's or something, which is why I originally was not thrilled about coming here. If you read my reviews, I'm in love with Caroline's in Dubuque, however, after my breakfast here, Caroline's has competition. This place was excellent. Something about this hash town with cheese in combination with the sausage links and eggs (over hard) was excellent. Put some ketchup on that wow! Amazing!!! On top of that... Also with the meal, I got half a waffle and if a place knows how to make a good waffle, they have the key to my heart lol! We went on a Sunday morning around 8:30.. Phew! I say that because around 9am, there was basically a line out the door. I went to college in Dubuque for 4 years as never came in this place, but don't judge a book by it's cover. Yes, this place clearly has been here forever and the outside decor shows, but the inside is super cute! Too bad I didn't get to try the pumpkin pie! Dang! I found this place on Yelp and it looked like a great spot for breakfast. My buddy told me that it's a chain that's very similar to Perkins or Denny's. I had no idea as Wisconsin doesn't have Village Inn's. It was a busy day for breakfast on that Sunday morning. I love the feel of this place, as I'm in 1950's dining room, with the light blue, orange, green and brown colors on the wall. In the middle of the restaurant with a sign of the world's best pie (or something to that affect). They had a pretty good system with seating people as we had about a 10 minute wait and it felt pretty quick. The service was good and almost too fast for me...it took me a little bit to figure out what I wanted. I went with their V.I.B. breakfast as there are four columns of food and you can pick one item from each column for about $8. Not a bad deal! I got sausage links, two egg and cheese omelet, english muffin, and a bowl of fruit. It sounds like these guys are pretty accommodating as they will get you anything that you want. I was happy with my food, but the portions seemed a little small. I didn't leave hungry, but didn't leave full. I did leave happy as it was a good experience. I like to order off their mix and match $8 menu so that I can create a breakfast that fits what I'm craving each visit (even if it is a weird combo). The service here was exceptional! My friends and I were seated immediately. No standing there waiting. All of the employees seemed happy with great attitudes. I couldn't believe it was our waitress's first day on the job? She was fantastic! She came to our table right away. Not once did we have to wait for refills on our drinks. It's Village Inn, the following is true in my book: I've never had a bad meal here. And I've never had a great meal here. But I've had many pretty good, Village Inn meals here, and that's good enough. I'm a breakfast for dinner sort of lad, and am delighted that I can do so at all hours of the day at VI. Portions are pretty good and diner sized. I'm a fan of the skillets and I almost always take the pancakes home for a post VI snack. Some random things: Go in for lunch on Wednesdays and get a free slice of pie. Sadly, the French Silk is not free-able. But that said, the French Silk is worth buying. Wow. They have TVs, but they are always on The Weather Channel, The Food Network, of The Disney Channel. Not sure why. I am a fan of the fact that if you order some coffee, they just bring bring an insulated pot of it to your table. Saves the waitstaff of having to stop by ever five minutes, and you are never coffee-less. I'm always impressed at how generally happy the waitstaff seems to be. I am not sure I have ever had less than good service. In all, VI is in my regular breakfast rotation (with Caroline's and The Sunshine Restaurant; I lovingly call them The Big Three). Noticed that the kids meals were priced the same or less than a fast food kid's meal, with a better selection. It's also noisy, the TV had the weather channel on, and a bit crowded. But if you're looking for something on one of those days where some want breakfasty stuff, some want lunchy stuff, some want sweet desserty stuff, this is good. And for the amount and quality food you get, the prices can't be beat. Plenty of parking, but be careful -- a lot of people wait to get picked up in the lot, so be patient if Nana or Grandpa are waiting for their ride to swing round. It's the Village Inn. One of those crazy diner chains only in Iowa (I think). Like another reviewer stated. We've never had a bad experience and never had a really good one either. I can certainly state that the VI is an experience though! We usually end up either going for breakfast or for pie. This last time was for pie, but they do an ok breakfast too. I'm not going to call it great, but it's what you'd expect from a place like this. The best part is the Muzak elevator music. This time around we heard instrumental versions of bad 80s pop followed by the Beatle's Penny Lane. Service at this place (like all of them) is very hit or miss. The outside of this place looks like an old motel, once you get inside it is beautifully decorated retro style. Lovely colors, super cool lamps! Brand new tables, and booths! The place was packed! Incredibly packed for a Friday morning when everyone is supposed to be at work. We ordered coffee which was amazingly good, & I'm a picky person when it comes to coffee! Ordered the Classic Egg Benedict and a Nacho's breakfast Skillet. Food was really really good, now I know why it was so busy! Lived in Iowa City for over 8 years and loved VI. Came to Dubuque for a wedding with my husband and made a list of places I wanted him to try. Of course VI made the list. He got the menu and wanted to try everything. Told him to stick with breakfast as it was always my favorite. He got a new scrambler plate with potatoes, sausage/gravy, and eggs, a short stack of pancakes, and a strawberry crepe. He loved every single bite. I got a short stack, bacon, fruit, and of course French fries. It was about 2pm when arrived on Saturday afternoon. Hostess was great, servers were in love with our baby, and our young waitress was good but would stand at the table waiting for us to look at menu both for our main order and dessert). This is my favorite place to go for breakfast and they serve it day or night. The breakfast supreme gives you plenty of food, ham, bacon, hash brown, eggs and your choice of flavored pancakes. The chicken fried steak is good also and they have daily specials too that you can add a pie for dessert for just $1. Guess you can tell I've been there many times. The drinks were brought out in a timely manner and our server was really really nice. Why 3 stars then? My Garden Skillet was very sub-par. The broccoli was way way way overcooked. This was our first time here. We came for a light lunch on Sunday afternoon before the drive back to Chicago. I was amazed when the six of us walked into the entrance and witnessed a crowd of 20 waiting to be seated. The host said that our group would have to wait 20 minutes to be seated. So we waited to see what was the attraction for others to this restaurant. I would say this restaurant provided a fair price tor the quality of the meal given, combined with very efficient service. I had the chicken sandwich with avocado and sweet potato fries. I enjoyed it. There was enough variety and price points to satisfy each one in the group. One person was attracted to the pie, ordered it, and enjoyed it. There were some funny placards on the walls, which told me that the restaurant could provide meals/service and not take itself too seriously. That makes for a pleasant atmosphere, both for staff and customers, even as the staff moved with great speed to serve every customer their meals. read more

Our very friendly waitress asked if I'd like onions and cheese in my hash browns, so of course I said yes. Onions were raw (unexpected but not a deal breaker) two slabs of American cheese were tossed on top and barely melted. Bacon was soggy but had a decent flavor. I go to Village Inn on a regular basis but the last few times I have been disappointed in the size of their pancakes. I usually order the VIB and normally the pancakes are the size of their small plates. However, the last two times the pancakes were incredibly small, two inches in diameter smaller than normal. I was told by the waiter that is the size they were always supposed to be. After I've been eating there for the last 5 years, I don't believe VI should start skimping on pancakes in a, nearly $9.00 breakfast. The sausage was a little smaller but pancakes? Long story short, it's just not what it used to be. We went for dinner with my wife's parents on a Thursday evening. The host was insanely slow and inefficient at seating people and, because of his ineffectiveness, a backup quickly built up in the lobby. After we were finally seated by one of the wait staff who jumped in to help, then no one seemed to know who was covering which tables. We never did receive ice water (that used to be immediately covered by the host or a bus person). After a fair wait, one of the servers finally came by to get our orders. His first comment was on how crazy busy they were. We were shocked because there weren't very many customers. He took our orders and then disappeared. Eventually we got our soup, salad, and drinks. Although we asked for it, still no water. As we waited on our food we tuned in to the dynamic among the staff. There was open bickering about the table coverage. The front end manager took no obvious action and seemed to blow off the person who commented. For what it's worth, that manager didn't seem to really know what he was supposed to be doing and didn't appear to have any control of what or how they were covering business. Meanwhile, we saw the lady we recognized as the main (general?) manager came out of the kitchen and she only seemed concerned about something about 3 people at table 10 and she was obviously flustered. We watched the continuing dynamic among the staff and eventually another waitress brought out our food. The orders were close, but not quite right. Our waiter reappeared, asked what we needed, again commenting about how crazy it was (still far from busy) and disappeared again. After the second reminder he got our orders right. The food itself was decent, just as its been for years. With regular prodding, we were able to get our needs covered but it was pretty obvious that a lot of the customers were frustrated. From management on through to the crew, this place needs help ord it's going to fail due to faltering service. It used to be excellent. Last night's experience was at least our 3rd or 4th with mediocre to poor service. Our patronage (once quite regular) has been lost. There are a lot better options in Dubuque. read more
