When I recently brought in three pairs of shoes to have the heels replaced, it was clear that one of the heels was pretty damaged. Nevertheless, the gentleman repaired them in perfect condition. This was accomplished in an hour while I was at QFC including providing new laces as I had requested. I have had a different pair repaired here a year ago. I was equally pleased with both jobs. In both cases these were instances where more than twice as much for new shoes I'd been considering. I was remembered from the prior visit this time, and warmly greeted. Fastest service around and won't break the bank! I wore my Doc Martens so much that the sign-of-loving-wear crease on top of my shoe turned into a "please-get-me-fixed" hole. Seeing as I wear these shoes a solid 70% of the time, I couldn't wait three weeks for other shops to patch them up. I was able to walk out of Village Shoe Repair with my repaired shoes within an hour of dropping them off. And a leather patch only cost $10! Now, I know it may not be the most aesthetically pleasing repair, but it got the job done (keeping water out and preventing further damage) for a very low price so I was satisfied. My husband just tried to have his shoes resoled, and the man quoted him at more than $80. When he said no, that's too expensive and tried to leave, he kept haggling with him and wouldn't give him his shoes back. He finally got him to agree to pay $50 in cash. I went back myself and tried to get his shoes back, but he had already torn the sole off and still wouldn't give it back. When I told him I can't get cash out around here, he finally charged $55 on my credit card, repeatedly saying he's not making any money from this. Total scam. Avoid at all cost. I'm not sure if this guy was just having a bad day when I walked in but he talked to me like I was an idiot and was intentionally being extraordinarily argumentative when he knew what I was trying to ask. I simply wanted to get a rough idea of the cost to clean 2 pairs of sneakers that were not very dirty. I walked in, kindly said hello, and asked for an idea of pricing to clean 2 pairs of sneakers. He sort of stared at me for a second then angrily said "I don't know!" and walked away. I was puzzled by the interaction and followed up asking what the general pricing is to clean sneakers & I pointed at a pair he had and said "they look just like those! Not very dirty. How much to clean 2 pairs of those?" to which he replied "Those are not sneakers." and went back to what he was doing. So at this point I was feeling confused and I tend to avoid confrontation so I was trying to be very friendly and agreeable and said "Oh! Ok maybe I don't know what sneakers are. I mean tennis shoes, or casual shoes..." to which he interrupted me and said "...but you said sneakers." and at this point I realized he must be having a bad day and is looking to argue. He reiterated that he needs to see them in person (which totally makes sense!) and I told him I'll bring them in but just wanted to get a very rough idea of what he would charge to clean TWO PAIRS of the shoes I was pointing at (I just needed a reference point!) and he said "Why?? You are worried about money?" (or something similar to that) so I walked out. Maybe he thinks I was asking stupid questions or maybe I shouldn't have been so shy and more assertive..? I was trying to laugh and be friendly since that's what I do in awkward/charged situations like that but it almost seemed to make it worse. Not really sure what pissed him off but the entire interaction was incredibly unsettling and weighed on me for a few hours afterwards. Would not bring anything of worth to this man. I brought in a vintage Louise Vuitton to have a buckle fixed and he proceeded to take sewing scissors out and to my horror cut the whole buckle off. It's like visiting my footwear grandfather, who gives me a gentle ribbing about how I don't take enough care of my shoes. Friendly tip: instead of just saying thanks and running, pause to appreciate his handiwork when he shows you what he did. Consider how you would feel if you worked by yourself all day in this hut and someone took a moment to treat your expertise as valuable instead of a commodity. I have a leather Michael Kors bag that I haven't worn for years because the strap ripped through the seams. I finally got around to fixing it when I began researching places that could fix leather handbags. Village Shoe Repair is the closest to me so I thought I'd give it a try. I was a bit apprehensive bringing my purse here because of some of the reviews but rest assured, this man knows what he doing!! I entered the store and said that I need my leather bag fixed. He took a look at the broken strap and said I should just buy a new one. Does this man want my business or not? Haha well I told him I paid a lot for this purse so I was not going to just "buy a new one". He examined the purse for a few more seconds and suggested a way he could fix it but because of the way the leather ripped, the repair may not be the most aesthetically pleasing. I said that's fine and he quoted me $16. He then said that he could do another option that would look nicer but would be more difficult to do. I asked how much that would cost and he thought about it said "for you, I'll just make it $16 as well". SWEET! I paid the owner and was told to come back the next day. Returned the following evening and at this point, I was just ecstatic to finally be able to use my purse again! I examined his workmanship and was thoroughly impressed with the quality of leather he used and the level of detail placed to ensure my satisfaction. To a close observer, you can tell the straps on both sides are different, but to everyone else, one cannot tell that it was ever broken! Yes, the owner is a little brash and can come off offensive, but just be nice (I used extra charm haha) and you'll be impressed with his work! DO NOT GO HERE! This guy has no business handling your precious shoes!!!!!!! I manage a shoe store in the U-village, and a client came in needing her heel taps replaced quickly. We normally send our shoes off to our company repair department. But in the instance of time I recommended this guy since he is so close. He charged the client $10.95 to replace the heel taps THAT SHE BROUGHT IN HERSELF! She was very upset. He told her that she is not paying for parts, but for his labor. It took him all of 30 seconds to replace.....oh, AND HE RUINED THE SHOES! He stripped the leather down on the heels. She now can't wear them this weekend. And we will have to send them away anyway. Nothing good came of this situation. Every encounter I have had with this so-called "Shoe Nazi" has been unprofessional, uncomfortable, and rude. Just a few days ago he asked me why I don't send clients to him from my shop. It's because his level of service is awful, and his customer service is even worse. This shop is advertised on here with Monday-Saturday hours, but I called yesterday (Sunday, November 6, 2011) and they were open until 5 pm. This may be normal, or not, but if it's a Sunday call ahead and check if they're open. I read through all of the reviews on here. I decided to take a chance because I didn't want to wait 1-2 weeks for my boots to be resoled at another store, plus I tend to like the underdog and was a little curious about all of the mixed reviews here. I took in my Timberland boots which cost around $200 retail. The soles that came with them wore down ridiculously fast and were very slippery on wet sidewalks/streets. The shop owner quoted me around $85 to put Vibram soles on with a 2 hour wait. His responses were very short, but never rude. 2 hours later after lunch and shopping, we stopped by to pick up my boots. Initially he told me that he needed more time and asked to come back next week. I was totally confused, then he broke a grin and pulled the boots from behind the counter with a flourish. His work was perfect, the new soles looked like they came on the boot directly from the factory. He also gave me some tips for leather care and cleaning. Give this guy a chance, you can't get this quick of a turn-around for this price on a Sunday anywhere else. If you're nice and polite and smile he will return those same courtesies and you will not be disappointed. He clearly takes a lot of pride in his workmanship and it shows. I'm planning to return with a handful of other shoe repairs soon. read more

I think what many of you are missing is that he's just a cute, old Asian man with a very rigid work ethic and limited English. I appreciated him so much. He was right down to business. Oh yeah, I totally agree--this guy is like the Soup Nazi of Seinfeld. He is the U Village Shoe Nazi. I brought in two pairs of vinyl boots that I have been running around in for two years. The rubber padding on the heels were worn down to nothing, so I thought I would see how long repairs would take at Village Shoe Repair. He replaced and repaired the heels for $16.80 per pair in under 20 minutes. I was totally pleased. I love fast and complete service. He also gave me some tough love about the way I treat my shoes, which cracked me up. He told me and I quote, "You tap, tap, tap, tap, tap too much on the heel of the shoe and that makes the shoe too loud. You too hard on these shoes. That makes the shoes too loud." But wait, here is the kicker. He then stated, "And you talk too loud too." What!? I talk too loud? (I am laughing as I type this...it was so funny I cracked up right then and there). I talk too loud?! Ummm...I think I came into his store for a shoe repair not a personality update. "Talk too loud?" Duh, of course I do, that's why I yelp! "Shoe Nazi" indeed. I've been visiting him for years to get my dress shoes shined and restored after many nights of destructive dancing. For a long time I disliked this guy because I always felt that he was rude and trying to hustle me into buying more than I needed. I only gave him my business because he was closeby. Over the years, I've realized his "rude" treatment is just his style and is certainly not genuinely rude -- far from it. It's just a backwards sort of charm. Now when he tells me "you don't know nothing about shoes...let me take care of you", I simply share a laugh with him and say "ok ok you're right, you take care of me!" Oh, and it turns out him trying to "hustle" me into buying new soles the past two years was him recommending a desperately needed repair that would have saved me a lot of damage. I just moved up to Seattle from San Francisco last weekend. I always felt that many of the regular Yelpers would whine too much about service and knock stars off for little to nothing. I appreciate good service, but I don't care if that waiter wasn't "super friendly like he should have been." The incident I had yesterday at University Village Shoe Repair was NOT one of those. I brought in two pairs of boots, one to have cleaned and polished and the other I wanted taken in, if possible. I asked him about the boots I wanted to have taken in around the legs. Honestly, I wasn't sure if it was a good idea or if a shoe repair business would be able to do it. I thought it might even be better to take them to a leather tailor. Pretty much from the get go I got a negative and aggressive attitude from him. He told me it would probably make the boots look bad and I asked about how exactly it would be done. We talked about it for a bit with me explaining exactly what about the fit I didn't like and how I would like to have them taken in around the legs. Then I tried the boots on while I offered to the let the customer behind me go ahead. I'm a soft spoken, avoid confrontation at all costs person, but I genuinely was curious if this would be possible. He was acting as if I was doing something wrong by making this request. It's one thing for him to tell me it's stupid to do this and ruin a good pair of boots or that he doesn't want to do the job. I wouldn't have a problem with that! But to act like I'm somehow I'm trying to attack him by making this request was ridiculous. Finally he told me that it would be $60. More than his explanation of what would be done, his attitude towards the whole thing concerned me and I'd rather just wear these boots as they are or sell them. So I told him I wanted to think about it while I pulled out my other boots and asked about having them cleaned and polished. If it had ended at this point, I would not be writing this review (unlike some of those SF Yelpers) Ignoring my request to have my other boots polished, he asked me about doing alterations on the original boots. I told him I wanted to think about it and again asked about the boots to be polished. This is when he got really aggressive. He angrily asked me how much I wanted to pay for it: "It's going to take me 8 hours to do the boots! How much do you want to pay?" Another customer came in at this point and had a "Oh wonderful" look on her face. (FYI, the customer area is about 3 feet by 8 feet.) I'm sure she assumed I'd done something to set this dude off. I told him again that I wanted to think about it and wasn't sure. Again, he asked much I wanted to pay. It wasn't what he was saying, it was how aggressive he was about it, like I was committing a crime against him by declining. This was nearing my limit. I was being as calm and reasonable ("I appreciate you taking the time to explain it to me, but...") as I could given the circumstances and again tried to refocus on the boots I wanted cleaned and polished. He wasn't having it. That's it! I grabbed my boots and stuck them in my bag. As I started to leave, he finally seemed to snap back to "OH, I'M TRYING TO RUN A PROFITABLE BUSINESS"-mode, asked about the boots I wanted polished and I politely told him "No". This guy may do good work and it's oh so convenient to where I live, but I can't bring myself to support this man. read more

Brought in a Kate Spade bag to have zipper pulls replaced. Paid $30 dollars for two tabs. The owner is very curt. He's not pleasant to transact with in any way. When I picked up my bag and got it home I noticed there was glue all over it. When I brought it back to him to complain he denied he did it and said he didn't have glue in his shop. Yes, he's going to make you reckon with the way you treat your beautiful shoes, he feels their pain and believes you need to be punished for their mistreatment. I know, I walk "with conviction" through puddles, mud, on brick/cobblestone. Seattle is not kind to shoes. Regardless, his guy will fix your shoes. I've taken a few different pairs in, but the most recent example is a pair of boots that I force my thick calves into, resulting in some zipper stress. On this particular pair the zipper teeth detached from the zipper ribbon. When I took these in he shook his head and scolded me for how difficult of a job it would be. He sighed and shook his head some more, then immediately followed with "$20, come back in 30 minutes." I don't know where else you can get such quick service, and for $300 boots a $20 fix is a godsend. This guy needs to be handled with a good sense of humor, just be prepared. When I came to pick up my boots he said with an entirely straight face "I couldn't do it, too hard." Then presented me with the boot, seemingly fixed, and said "try to zip it," the zipper worked beautifully. Without a smile he said "stop kicking people so much." I don't know what other people are talking about with regards to the owner. My experience at University Village Shoe Repair was outstanding. Yes, there was a bit of a language barrier, but I don't see that as a reason to leave him a poor review. I went here to have my shoes repaired, not to make friends with the man behind the counter, although upon my exit we had a very positive interaction and I do consider him friendly. I brought him a pair of shoes that I've had repaired once in the past through a different business, and I had a friend who brought two pairs of shoes as well. He first took care of one pair of my friend's shoes, quickly fixing a small problem at no charge. For my shoes, only one had an issue where there was a split between the sole and the shoe itself. When I previously had them repaired, it took seven days, cost $50, and they sewed a patch on that split within a month. When I brought the shoes to U Village Shoe Repair, he had them done in 30 minutes for $30 and I can already tell that the repair is much more stable. My friend's shoes were done in the same amount of time. I haven't had a lot of shoes repaired, but this experience was much better than my first, which was done at Northgate. The work was good, completed quickly, and I have zero qualms about the service. I tried the shoes on before leaving, and he asked to make sure they fit comfortably and his repairs hadn't made them too tight. They felt great, but I am confident he would have made adjustments had they felt uncomfortable in any way due to his work. read more

Yes, the guy is surly but he did a nice job on my Stuart Weitzman patent leather peep toe pumps. These shoes were new and I wanted half rubber soles placed so that I don't keep scratching the bottom plus they were slippery. I was a little nervous but was relieved to find he did a very nice job. He said to come back in 15 minutes. I went shopping and came back in an hour. The half soles cost somewhere between $25 and $30. Not cheap but considering it's done quickly I don't mind. Other places take 1-2 weeks! While I was there I also saw a pair of nude patent leather heels that he just fixed with light beige half soles and they looked great! I will be bringing in nude peep toes soon. I did not minus any stars for surliness. The work is good and that's all I need. read more

I LIVE in my boots all through the non-summer months (so, almost all year) and I had two problem boots that needed some help: First, a beloved three year old pair of leather riding boots with a slight wedge that I had completely worn away. I'm serious when I tell you they had become flat boots, and the heel wasn't the only issue, the soles were worn paper thin. Second, a pair of black faux leather boots I got as a Christmas gift but had only worn a handful of times because the heel was a hard plastic which made them VERY slippery even after I had scuffed them up a bit. Anyway, I brought these bad boys here and explained my issues, the man working there said it would be no problem. I pointed out an area on the back of the riding boots where I had actually peeled away some of the leather from the back of the heel from so much wear, I told him not to worry about that, but he said he'd give it a try. He rang me up and said it would be $95ish dollars. My stomach sank - that's a lotttt of money. I have gotten the riding boots repaired before for $40 - though it was out of state, and they definitely weren't in as poor condition as this time. I asked how much they were and he said $60. I thought that was probably okay, I knew they'd take a lot of time, but I thought the remainder of the price was still too much for just popping a new heel on the other pair. Anyway, I paid the man and he said they'd be done tomorrow. Today is tomorrow. I got the boots back and I am amazed. Those riding boots I love so much look fantastic - totally resoled, heels totally repaired, even the tricky little spots on the back. He had polished them as well so they looked really great. The black ones were great as well, even though i like them I used to wear them because I felt like I should (they were a gift..!) but now I'm excited about them again because I don't have to worry about wiping out while crossing the street. To be honest, I am soo happy with my boots that I can almost overlook my slight feeling that I was overcharged for the second pair. The work is great quality. Upon a friend's recommendation, I visited the little hut in the middle of the mall. The 'shoe nazi' took one look, said, "good boot," priced it out at $19 and told me it'd be ready in 45 minutes.
