Literally the WORST. I've come in at least three times for extremely simple fixes, only to be met with withering responses and immediate refusals. Today's exchange topped them all when I brought in a pair of sandals that had cracked on the upper part. Jim glanced at the shoes, then at me, and said "Nope. I can't fix that. How could I fix that?" Um, what?? Am I the cobbler now?? He bunkered down and repeated: "I can't do it." This man only comes from a place of no. Awesome! I really appreciate our cobblers, and Jim's is a great shoppe. Most of my shoes are Johnston & Murphy, worth $150-$200 a pair, not luxury but not disposable, either. I've got a pair of Cole Haan boots, and the point of this is: these shoes make great financial sense if you've got a good cobbler who can keep them in good repair and looking sharp for awhile. I appreciate their honesty, as well, as they have told me - "yeah, that's not worth cleaning up," or, "that's not worth fixing" . . . I'm a big fan. read more

Jim and Julie, ,the couple who own and staff this storefront run a great cobbler shop. They both used to work at Frederick and Nelson's, back in the day, and they know shoe repair. They also offer services to polish and shine your shoes better than they have ever looked! In a world that people too often throw away shoes instead of redoing them this is a place that deserves to be supported. Many modern shoes cannot be repaired you must buy with a long term view of your investment. Don't be put off by the old-fashioned decor this is the real deal. I have occasionally insisted on paying more, the work they did seemed priced too low for them to pay the rent. I was surprised to see the negative reviews here, I guess it proves that you can please some of the people some of the time and that people with positive experiences are less likely to write up a review. I have been going here for over 15 years and am appreciate of this couple's devotion to hard work --- if you could take a look at my shoes you'd see are in great condition. Paid my second visit to Jim's today, and I'm officially a loyal customer. Had a giant shoe emergency on Monday when the leather on the inside edge of one of my favorite pair of flats detached from the sole...and I'm leaving for Chicago on Thursday morning and planned to bring them. The horror! Went to Jim's shortly after he opened on Tuesday. He examined the shoe, said he could fix it and would also do some preemptive work to the other shoe just in case, plus recommended new heel pads. All for $30 and done the next day. What?!? Amazing. The owner (older gentleman) was horrible when it came to questions. I asked him to repair a boot and he said it was impossible and no one can do it. He basically said that there is no way my Danner boots could be repaired whatsoever. I actually ended up going to another shoe repair place and they did it within a day. This is not a family friendly business, and the owner was rude especially with his comments to me. Stay away from this business. read more

Just had Jim repair 3 pairs of shoes. He replaced some broken eyelets and hooks on my work boots. He repaired and reattached the stacked leather heels on a pair of boots. He also replaced the gum soles on a pair on vintage clogs. All 3 repairs were perfect and done quickly. I dropped off on Tuesday morning and they were finished by Thursday evening. I have been going to JIm's for several years. Jim is a crusty guy with not much in the way of making you feel good. He has always been very negative but Julie has always been super. I love their work and I have come to accept Jim is just who he is. He has many times made me feel as if what I was asking was too much trouble or not worth his time. I not really able to give a review of the work done here, precisely because both times I've gone, they would do the work. First my gf brought in some high boots with a zipper that needed repair. " I don't do zippers" was the reply, delivered in a tone that seemed to suggest "You're stupid for having boots with zippers. Get them out of my store!" Fair enough. The second time I went in to try to resole some old boat shoes that had a sole loose at the toe. "Nothing I can do with these." Then, eyeing the rubber reinforcements I had glued on the soles by a cobbler in China, he said, "I'm surprised you even found someone to put these on!" Again with the tone "I can't believe you found someone who would even touch your stupid shoes!" Ok, maybe I am being harsh, but those are my only two experiences there. read more

I decided to try this shop out after reading the stellar reviews on Yelp. I brought in a pair of cowgirl boots some time in February; the sole was lifting off one of them. I was barely greeted; the guy examined my boots and made a face, presumably because the material is faux leather (I'm vegan and purposefully sought out a pair that matched my lifestyle), and sighed, saying he didn't know what he could do but he would try. I left them reluctantly, feeling like I was putting him out by bringing him business. When I picked the boots up, I was delighted to find them repaired as good as new, and the woman at the counter was friendly and very helpful. It more than smoothed over my initial impression. Now after lots of wear, the soles are beginning to pull off again, so I took them back, figuring it may just be a routine with this particular pair. Again, no greeting; both the man and the woman "helped" me at the front and both made the annoyed face when I brought my boots out. The guy sighed and said "Didn't I fix these once before?" I responded that yes, he had, and that the work had been superb, I just wear these very often. More sighing. No warmth, no eye contact, no smiling. Once again, I felt as if my business was unwelcome! I was asked when I needed them by and I responded happily that there was no rush, they could call when finished. The response? Another annoyed sigh and followed by a snippy remark to just pick a specific day of the week. If my boots are a pain in the ass for some reason, I wish they would just tell me they can't work on them again -- it beats the passive-aggressive fuck-off vibes. I was willing to overlook the abrupt customer service for the stellar work once, but not twice. The awkward/embarrassing exchange isn't worth it, and I really don't care to give them another dollar. The absolute best cobbler in town! I've taken in boots that had soles completely separate from the shoe and Jim was able to fix them. He is also extremely honest and will let you know the extent to which your shoes can be fixed. Everytime I take shoes here, I get them polished and they look brand new when I walk out. Jim's shop doesn't smell like you're going to be overcome with solvent fumes as soon as you walk in. It's clean, neat and orderly. Jim not only does a fantastic job at bringing new or extended life to SHOES but he's a very nice man. His prices also reflect a good value for the work. His neon sign in his front window( Magnolia Village) is a classic and reflects Jim's commitment to the values that stand for honesty, simplicity, respect for our PNW history and great work for the value. Got my shoes done here a few times. Most recently they stained my shoes a color that didn't match the original (not even close). When I asked why the color was different I was met with a very abrasive response from I'm assuming "Jim", who was miffed when I asked if he could try & match it to the original. Because I feel everyone deserves a 2nd & sometimes 3rd chance, I returned for the 3rd & final time to be met by a woman who didn't seem to have the time or desire to greet me or anyone else in the store with a baseline of customer service. I had a pair of shoes I was hoping to touch up--1 of which needed some glue on the heel. When I was told there was "...no sense in [me] getting the shoe fixed, because I'd likely damage it again...", that was all I needed to feel confident in my earlier assessment of this shop. I walked out w/ my shoes in hand. I am looking forward to finding a shoe repair shop that can stand by their work, but even more importantly, doesn't insult or belittle their customer base. read more

This guy is worthless. I've been going to shoe repairs my entire life, and this is the first time I've had someone say they couldn't guarantee that my heels would stay on my shoes. He clearly had no idea how to fix an unconventional shoe even though the same shoes have been fixed by other cobblers in the past. I then asked if he could fix a bag that had a rip and he again said he couldn't fix it when I know of many other shoe repairs that can do the work. read more

I called to ask if they installed zippers in new boots and she snapped "I don't do zippers". Taken back a bit, I asked of she could explain why...perhaps to enlighten me so I should reconsider this. One of the best places in town to get your shoes, handbags and other leather goods repaired. Been using them for years. Good old fashion honest folks that doesn't penny pinch you with surcharges. Friendly and very easy to talk to. Many times, I would walk out of there with repairs costing less than $2. That is amazing for day and age. And if he thinks something is not worth fixing, he'd tell you straight up. As he says, he'd love to take my money but if he was in my shoes, the fix ain't worth the cost of fixing. I've been going here for probably 20 years and been able to have good quality shoes resoled and maintained for 10 years. Great quality and service and fair prices. This is shoe repair, not shoe construction (although he is very good), so not all shoe problems are repairable. They are very courteous, but this is a shoe shop, not a counseling service. This is a dying kind of business in our modern economy, which is unfortunate, because it brings great value and allows you to invest in quality shoes when you make your initial purchase.
