We have been there several times over the last few years and liked the ice cream. We stopped last night for a twist cone out of their brand new soft-serve machine. Right away we knew the ice cream had changed significantly. Some additive makes it taste very strange and not real true ice cream. Flavor lacking. We will not return. read more

We were happy to find this place as not many options in this area for a quick stop and food . The staff was very nice. They give a deal if you use cash. The food came out quickly and was hot. It was ok I guess I was nit expecting it to be so "breaded " I got the cauliflower which I was happy to see on the menu but it had a lot of breading on the outside and there were no dipping sauce options that I was aware of besides ketchup and mustard The chicken basket was ok, chicken tenders were a bit bland and very thin. The fries were cooked well but no salt which left them bland . Unfortunately the bathrooms were bit very clean at all . Heading back to CT from Burlington, VT, we drove into Rutland and a rain storm so intense, we had to pull over. We happened to be very hungry as well, and were lucky that Village Snack Bar was the first parking lot we came to. We ordered BLTs and hand-cut fries, and went to the screened-in dining area in back. The order came right up, and we dug in. Now, you'd think it's hard to screw up a BLT, right? Well, I've had several. Luckily, the sandwich here was perfect. The ingredients were fresh and tasty, the bacon yummy, and the bread was toasted to a golden crust. The bacon was done in that "Goldilocks" range--not brittle and not gummy, and the fries were delish (and such a generous amount). We followed up our dinner with a little soft serve, also yummy. The people were friendly, the bathroom clean, and the food filled our bellies nicely--just in time for the storm to blow over and be back on the road. Honestly, my family was going to go a bit out of our way to get some maple ice cream but we decided to look into something closer. We got there a half hour before they opened by accident and it was nice, only a few families arrived in the half hour it took us to eat. The maple ice cream was delicious, all 8 of my family members would give it 5 stars. I will say that the prices are REALLY good for the amount of ice cream you get, so maybe go for a baby size instead of a small (they defy gravity with the amount of ice cream they stack on the cones). Staff was very nice and friendly. They were quick with the ice cream and even the food. My cousin said the chicken sandwich was better than Chick-Fil-A so you might want to try that and the fries are DELICIOUS. read more

Grandparents and 6-year old boy had lunch today. No kids meals, so he had the burger combo with fries and large chocolate milk (it was large!). Good sized burger--he could only eat half. I also had the burger but wanted onion rings, so they were separate. I forgot to ask for salt and pepper for my burger. Don't get the onion rings, probably the worst I've ever had. Skinny, soggy with grease, considered taking them back. Stick with the fries, they are correctly cooked Vermont-style fries. I also had a pina-colda (Non-A), and it was very good. Grandma had the Rueben Sandwich, it was as expected and good. That was almost 50$, food is expensive everywhere these days, have to get used to that. The Whole Belly Clam dinner with slaw is 30$. Village Snack Bar has been a tradition in my family for years and years. The food is always fresh and delicious without fail. This evening we went directly after I got out of work, but it was still right before closing. I felt SO BAD doing this to them, but they assured me it was okay, but they would make it to go since they were closing, which was fine with me. Food was good, but the cashier... not so much. We ordered a fish sandwich amongst the rest of our food for a family of 4. I asked if fries come with it, and she suggested I orders side of fries as well because this sandwich comes fry less. The cashier was very distracted and was talking back and forth with other employees inside the whole time while taking our order. Not to my surprise, she forgot to enter the fish sandwich into the register system. We got our food a while later when I realized it was missing. I looked at the receipt and it was not on it. I went back to the counter to get my fish sandwich, and she put in a second order for me. While I paid for the sandwich, she told me it may be a 30-40 minute wait. I wasn't going to be the only one in my family without dinner, so I waited anyhow. To sum things up, I believe the cashier may need some further training to eliminate other distractions, or repeat the order to the customer eliminating errors. read more

We've found this the perfect spot to stop for lunch and ice cream on our way back to NY after a camping trip. The large parking lot makes it easy for us to pull in with our camper, and the spacious outdoor area is great for sitting with our dog. The food...it's delicious!! The dill pickle chips are perfection as are the house battered onion rings. The griddled bun for the hot dog adds great extra flavor, and the burger is one of the best I've had in a long time. Then there's the ice cream! Puts the cherry on top of a great meal! We'll definitely be back next time we're in Rutland. So glad we found this little gem! read more

I love this place! I've only eaten the specials when I've visited, but they were delicious. The whole belly clams were outstanding and loaded with clams. They came with excellent fries and tasty Cole slaw. On our second visit we tried the lobster, which was delicious. The bun was perfectly toasted and the lobster was in a salad of mayo and celery and came with chips. We topped off our second visit by sharing a large creemee swirl of chocolate and vanilla. Ginormous might have been a more apt description. I suspect we'll be regulars throughout the rest of the summer. They have lots of outdoor seating and ample parking too. read more

Passing through VT on my travels across America checking out homemade ice cream. Stopped by dog-friendly and really nice customer service and employees. I only came for the ice cream which was reasonably priced compared to the other menu items. Had a small ice cream which came with the smallest ice cream scoops I have ever seen. A small gets you three scoops. I ordered the classic Chocolate Vanilla and Strawberry, The vanilla and strawberry were just average but the chocolate was something special. For a roadside, walk up and order type of place, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. The fries were fresh cut, the burger was hand pattied and the fried zucchini was simply breaded and nice and crisp. We ordered to go, but you could have taken a tray to one of the outdoor tables, some of which were on the hill in the shade, and there was area for the kids to play and run as well. While we didn't try them, there was a number of seafood items on the menu and seemed popular with the locals. I would put this on my list of dives and drive-ins to visit again. I was not too impressed with their food. I got their Philly cheese steak burger, and the beef was super over cooked. I was very disappointed with that. Their fries were decent not the best, but their sweet potato fries were very good. I also had a peanut butter frape that they had, which for some reason I tasted a lot of water with it, so much I couldn't tell until a few sips in that it was actual peanut butter. This place has amazing fries. The burger and black bean burger where ok. The black bean burger wasn't homemade. The fried clams where amazing. The cheese burger was just average, and the fish sandwich was good. Something amazing is that they had 24 different flavors of soft serve ice cream, not including chocolate and vanilla. Prices where good on the ice cream and overall, the ice cream was the best part. Good place to visit if you are driving by, or if you are close and looking for a snack bar it is worth the drive for the ice cream and fries!
