Lots of firsts for me here, they offer a lot of different services. So basically, I went in for some lower back pain that I think I got from my desk job, and was going to get a chiropractic adjustment. The way this practice works is they don't just do one thing, they do it all! My first appointment I was fully informed of their whole process and I started with a back adjustment then some physical therapy, followed by Pilates and then some electric therapy (doesn't hurt) with a warming pad--feels absolutely amazing! And all of this is done in an hour! Anywho after going 3 or 4 times is when you have been exposed to all the different treatments. So it's some combination of physical therapy, chiropractic work, Pilates and Acupunture. And each session is about 10-15min, so for example it's not a full body Acupunture treatment but instead it is targeted to the specified area you want. Logistics: they take really good care of you here and they check your insurance for you and let you know updates or anything via text/email/phone call. They also offer times in the evening (7pm I think is the last appointment of the day)

I had an awful incident working out and threw out my back 2 weeks before my wedding. I was hunched over, unable to walk or sleep. The pain was truly unbearable. I made a same-day appointment with Dr. Townsend but I was terrified how to fix it and no idea where to go next. When I went in, they were so careful and kind about my injury and making sure I was comfortable. I couldn't lay down, move around, etc. but they assessed me ensuring I didn't have much movement and making small changes every visit for improvement. They immediately swarmed me with a full care team (PT and chiro) to assess my injury, clearly communicated financial costs my insurance plan will cover (I have NEVER heard of a doctor doing this upfront for financial peace of mind!) and put me on a care plan. I saw Dr. Townsend, Dr. Dave, Dr. Anar, pain management, acupuncture - you name it. Every single person in the office was so kind and took great care of me. There was no lapse in sharing of information - they were all very up to speed with my pain/injury and my treatment without me having to ever repeat information. I felt confident with each new face they knew the right next steps to take, truly never been the case for medical care I have sought in the past in NYC. I saw them 3-4x a week for 2 weeks and they had me back to walking and pain-free. I even was able to do my first dance at the wedding and a dip, which we thought impossible after my back issues! I still continue to see them and every time the staff is warm, I feel 10x better after receiving care and I am provided clear instructions to take care of myself when I go home. I would recommend Riser to anyone and everyone - I have had PT before, but it doesn't even come close to this office and care team. My experience with Dr. Jonathan Kuo was hands down the worst encounter I've ever had with a medical…read morepractitioner. On the day I visited the West Village office, his assistant did an intake with me and I immediately sensed something was wrong. Before I could even finish describing my symptoms and medical history, he started suggesting procedures - some of which he said were "diagnostic and therapeutic" as well as infusions, and various nerve blocks. He was rattling off so many treatments that I actually thought that this assistant was Dr. Kuo. But he wasn't. He soon went to get Dr. Kuo whom he said was "coming out of the OR." When he left the room I heard some chatter and looked through the door and saw another man (who turned out actually to be Dr. Kuo) getting dressed in OR gear to come in to speak with me -- in other words to make it look like he was "coming out of the OR." He sat down across from me and was very smug. As I began to once again try to explain my complex symptoms and medical history, he began bristling impatiently. Visibly uncomfortable, fidgeting, and crossing and re-crossing his legs, he then started rattling off various treatments he could do right away - plasma infusions and re-infusions, nerve blocks of various kinds - basically a longer version of the list that the assistant had rattled off. I reminded Dr. Kuo that he hadn't even examined or diagnosed me, and his response (like that of his assistant) was that all of his procedures were both diagnostic and therapeutic. He soon asked me what insurance I had and then started quoting out of pocket prices based on my insurance policy. I expressed tentative interest in one of the procedures he mentioned and, when he took note of my interest, he said, "I could even give it to you for a discount if you do it today." Dr. Kuo is clearly a medical salesman above all else and, while this is true of most physicians in our "health care system", his bold and unabashed manner in trying to sell me on whatever procedure would produce him the most cash was extremely disturbing, as well as unethical and unprofessional (to say the very least). When Dr. Kuo finally realized that I wasn't just going to bow down and accept some expensive and potentially life threatening procedure then and there, he got even more uncomfortable and aggressive, folding and recrossing his legs repeatedly; at one point when he got particularly agitated, farted twice, and got up out of his chair as if to walk out of the room. At that point, I actually got up and quickly made a B-line out of the chic waiting room and into the main area so that I could exit the facility. I just wanted to make my way to street level so I could breathe again. Horrible, horrible experience. And while the office is nice and "chic," it's also - like Dr. Kuo - all appearance, total artifice. It's also noteworthy that his entire operation is below ground and totally isolated which makes one feel as if they are in some kind of other-worldly bubble where Dr. Kuo and his staff are in full control. Pretty scary stuff, to say the least (and this is just a summary of what happened during my visit, and not a very detailed one at that). After running out of there, I immediately got in touch with my own primary care physician to tell him about this experience; he was also aghast and told me never to go back there and to caution others as well. My sincere advice to anyone even thinking of seeking treatment from Dr. Kuo (despite the positive reviews left here, which I find questionable) is to err on the side of caution and STAY AWAY FOR YOUR OWN HEALTH! This is not something to play around with....
