The people at Vine Vet are phenomenal. Everyone is so personable and caring - doctors, techs, front desk staff. We found out our sweet cat had pretty late stage cancer last year Vine Vet guided us through the process with grace and were always there if we needed anything. Doctor believes pet with no meds is better than pet with only Simparica Trio. Shot tyrants who think house dogs might get rabies from the carpet. Commands and demands from my doctors aren't a thing I tolerate. Sadly, I specifically asked if this was going to be a problem when I made the appointment. I was told that nobody would be forcing anything on my pets. I attended the appointment and found they were lying and demanding cancer shots we didn't need. We took our cat as an urgent new patient to Vine on a Friday evening when she had urinary retention following surgery for over 24 hours. She has feline hyperesthesia and had just undergone tail amputation, and was on multiple medications. Our regular vet had left for the day and wasn't responding to us. Vine vet squeezed us in and the vet tech and vet were about to evaluate her when she urinated spontaneously. They were super nice and then did not take any payment from us (despite us offering since we did take up their time). In fact, they cleaned up our cat and cat carrier, and gave us a free dose of Revolution. When our cat had the same issue they again squeezed us in and treated our cat appropriately. Dr. Goss was very nice and great with us and our cat, and had excellent suggestions to help us get our cat back to her baseline. We have now switched to Vine veterinary permanently. I'm a big fan. I spent an entire day and night trying to reach out to someone, ANYONE, for help with my new cat. Our regular vet couldn't get her in for an urgent spay as she was diagnosed with 'possibly' having pyometra (she definitely had it). I sent a late night message to them (and dozens of other places) for help. They followed up first thing in the morning by phone AND e-mail telling me they would be able to get her in SAME DAY, on a WEEKEND. She was in and out of surgery in an hour and ready to go home after two. I had originally called an emergency vet and they quoted me 5k-7k, and $240 just to walk in the door. I left this place paying a very small fraction of that cost and my cat was in and out in just a few hours. After she was done I asked if it was in fact pyometra - and it was, big time. I love the vibe, I loved the cost and I enjoyed the people. read more

We can highly recommend the new owner of Vine Veterinary Hospital. While we haven't visited Vine, we have been clients of Dr. James Beeson for over 30 years in the Advance/Bermuda Run community. As a multi pet family, Dr. Beeson provided all our pets with excellent, comprehensive care. Frequently, we are the home of last resort for rescue pets that have significant medical issues that rescue groups are unable to place. He provided our pets with health maintenance care, significant dental care, digital X-ray capabilities, on site lab work, ultrasound, among many other treatments. We can confidently recommend his practice for all pet owners & the Chapel Hill community is fortunate to have his practice. read more

I feel like this place and their "old school, father-knows-best vibe" is polarising... I was not a fan. I want to let prospective patients know how this place is and not be blinded by only positive reviews and then be very disappointed during a visit. Dr. Redman prides himself on not doing any diagnostic tests and just blankets his own dogs (by his own account) in de-worming medicine regardless of the situation. He recommended we do the same nonsensical thing with our dogs. He is very old-fashioned, as others have mentioned and apparently liked, but to me it came off as an unwillingness to consider new information/drugs on the market, which is not an ok sentiment to have as a healthcare provider (to dogs or humans). No one in the office was rude, just inefficient (no computerized database, which led to confusion over handwriting at another vet). If this kind of place jives with you - that's awesome. Our dogs had a good time; I have no doubt that Dr. Redmond loves animals and wants to do good by them, but I cannot agree with his attitude. read more

Dr. Redman truly cares about the lives of pets, is more willing to talk over the phone and give us the honest truth. He's old fashioned and down to earth (as other reviews state and this is why I chose him), I would trust no other vet with a pet of mine. He is very offbeat, but so am I. I have been putting off writing this review because I didn't think I could possibly relay how highly I hold Dr. Ken Redmond. Dr. Redmond is quite simply, the finest man I have ever been lucky enough to meet. I've given this a lot of thought, and I'm married. Still, with reflection, Dr. Redmond is the finest man I've ever met, and I'm pushing 50. It isn't just that he is wicked sharp, hilarious, humble (he asks to be called "Ken", which I refuse to do out of respect!) and personable. He actually cares about his patients, humans, and employees. I first took a dog to him in 2003, nearly twenty years ago. How highly do I hold Dr. Redmond's opinions? My husband and I recently flew 3000 miles from California with our dogs back to North Carolina so we could have Dr. Redmond take a look at them. He is the equivalent of a professor in knowledge and a hell of lot nicer! Dr. Redmond takes time to really explain what is going on with your dog, and never talks down to you. He stayed an hour open late one time about a decade ago for me, because I thought the practice closed at 6 and it closed at 5. He could have just charged me for boarding my dog for a night, and gone home. When my husband was having a hard time saying goodbye to our 19 year old ShihTzu, I called Dr. Redmond for advice, and that man talked to my husband and calmed him down and was a combination pastor/psychologist/veterinarian. Yelp reader, would your current veterinarian call your husband to counsel him?! I had been going to some real scoundrels in California who were pushing incredibly expensive ($8000 chemo on a 16 year old ShihTzu with aggressive cancer) and futile treatments and Dr. Redmond would never take advantage of a pet owner like that. His office does not have salt water aquariums. There are no Lexus luxury cars in the parking lot. Instead of spending your money on expensive office decor, computerized records, Muzak, leather sofas, Dr. Redmond takes care of his staff, who have been with him for decades. The practice has not been eaten up by these corporations that now own most veterinary practices. It's hard to run a business. Dr. Redmond has people he supports, and he does it without promising a load of baloney and ripping you off. The world would be better off with more Dr. Redmonds. He should have a reality show to teach people how to conduct themselves - really, the finest man I have ever met. read more

I had been looking for a practical, cost-effecive, caring vet for a long time and am very happy to have found Dr Redman. We have been using him for about 10 years and his level of caring and communication is excellent. He lays out options but doesn't push expensive interventions, diagnostics, or procedures. He doesn't do x-rays, ultrasounds, or have many technologies -- he''ll send you to another vet for those procedures. Dr. Redman obviously cares way more about your pet's health and your sanity as a pet owner than he does about making a buck, and that's why we'll keep going to him for as long as we're in the area. My most memorable interaction with Dr. Redman was when our dog was having digestive woes, and he asked us to bring in a stool sample. He picked it apart on the examining table with us in the room and explained what the, uh, stuff in the stool meant for our dog's digestive issues. It wasn't pretty but he did it without charging us and now we know what to look for when our pupper isn't feeling well. Other great things about Dr. Redman: he has dispensed advice for minor problems over the phone without making us go in for an appointment. He is very honest about what treatments are necessary and which ones are not, as well as when you should be worried and when you should relax and let nature take its course. He's a bit strange to talk to but not in an off-putting way. As I said, you can tell he really cares about your animal. And the rest of his staff are very warm and friendly, too. read more

He takes his time, will speak to you at length on the phone when necessary, truly seems to care for your animal on a personal level, and equally as important, takes a no nonsense approach to treatment. Dr. Redman is an old school kind of vet. The kind where you can call for advice, and he's happy to talk over the phone. When my 15 year old rottie was bleeding out of her nose, his advice was not to bring her in for tests. Rather, let her be and only bring her in if she was in pain. When she was eating gravel (!) they gave us the options of tests (blood and otherwise) or switching up her food to see if that was a cheaper and easier fix. This is no fancy-pants vet, which I like. They always match the price on flea and heartworm meds if you find it cheaper elsewhere. I also boarded my 2 dogs there for 2 weeks and they were totally loved on and well cared for. We have been going here for 5 years now- cats, puppies, dogs and all. read more

I was very tempted to come here based on these reviews to find a vet for my cat, whom I just moved with these past two months here. However, I called them beforehand just in case it wasn't suitable -- unfortunately I didn't get to speak with Dr. Redman who sounds like a very good doctor, but with a female dr. whom I can't recall the name of, and by god she was rude. Before I even got to explain the situation with my cat and finish asking my question, she continuously cut me off and immediately berated me for how I treated my cat because he was being aggressive to the other kitty who lives in our place. I was spraying him with water, because isn't that the least harmful thing you could do to a cat who was attacking a kitten?! I did not even finish speaking, and when I cut her off to explain more, she interrupted again by saying "I was still talking." Yes, well, so was I, and she didn't even know what my questions were yet. By the way, "you should google why he's behaving this way" is the most stupid and unprofessional answer I have ever heard of. Is that even what a real vet should say? Why did she think I called the hospital instead? She also told me not to bother taking the cat in for a medical check-up which I appreciate for honesty, but at the same time, google will never give me the answers I'm looking for. If she was more polite and answered my questions, I would have immediately come here because I know not only does she care for my pets and problems, but she also respects me as an owner. She made me feel incredibly offended and I haven't even gotten the chance to come to this hospital. Call me childish and whiny, but I would have been a potential customer, and I hate leaving bad reviews to a place that could have been great if one person didn't immediately make it an awful experience. read more

We REALLY like Dr. Redman. He's very down to earth, explains his professional opinions very thoroughly, and doesn't ever recommend anything unnecessary. He much prefers to treat non-disease problems through environment and behavior before suggesting meds (for example, allergies); that being said, he was open to putting our dog on a med that was the only real option for treating her urinary incontinence, but explained to us how we could gauge the minimum amount she could take to effectively treat the issue - that is, he was suggesting that we not overmedicate her with the 'prescribed amount' if less would work just fine. When our dog cracked a nail, he removed it but didn't want to put her on prophylactic antibiotics because dogs have been licking their wounds for millennia... I really appreciated that because of all the problems that over-prescribing of antibiotics has caused - that being said, if actual signs of infection develop he will THEN prescribe antibiotics, which is entirely reasonable. Another reviewer called him 'old school' and I agree and I LOVE that about him. He's not the kind of vet who will guilt you into anything just to make a buck, and I've certainly run into that with other vets. He's not into over-testing, but when he does suggest a test, he'll explain it and why he wants to do it, and it totally cool about you saying 'no.' I hope he never retires! read more

I've been taking my cats and dog to Dr. Redman at Vine Vet since 1999, and I have never been anything but thrilled with him - I strongly recommend him to all of my friends. He's such a good guy and really cares about the animals he treats (and their owners). He looks out for his patients and ways to save them money (even if it means less profit for him). For example, when I called him about an eye injury in my cat, he told me not to bother bringing her in to see him, because he was fairly sure he was going to refer me to an animal eye doc, and I should save my money (and time) and just call the eye doc directly. He is always happy to talk over the phone (sometimes in lieu of needing to visit), and he's cheery and friendly with me and the animals. He also has time slots where you can drop in for shots without an appointment, and you can drop your pet off before work for a checkup and pick them up after work. His team does grooming and boarding as well. Also, I've never had trouble getting a prompt appointment. I can't recommend him highly enough. read more
