I recently visited Vines & Canines for the first time, and I seriously couldn't love it more! I was there for a pop-up, so it wasn't exactly the typical experience, but I did shop around and order from the bar while I was there, so I feel like I did get a good feel of the space and the staff. First, I love that this is a wine (and spirits) shop, and bar, that's dog friendly! How great is that?! I didn't have my puppy with me on this visit, but I can't wait to bring him back! What's better than sitting around a beautiful sitting area, or even better our on the patio, with a glass of wine (or bourbon) and your furry friend? The atmosphere in this spot is great! As I mentioned, they have an outdoor seating area, as well as ample seating inside. They have both tables in the front, as well as a great comfy seating area a little further into the space. We had a great time sipping mimosas (and a Bellini for me) while we visited. They also have a bar inside the seating area where you can order wine, liquor, or cocktails. They have chalkboard menus containing almost anything your heart could desire. And I was really impressed with their selection of bourbons, both behind that bar and for sell within the shop (which lives in the front of the space). And the staff was great! I interacted with 4 or 5 staff members while I was there and they were all really friendly and helpful. Ok so I have to write this review but this is an absolute hidden gem (or maybe I just discovered it). I was on Yelp looking for a chill wine bar and this place looked like it fit the vibe we were going for. It seems like a speakeasy with only wine and bourbon inside the store. This is such a special spot. Exactly one year ago today my boyfriend and I went on our first date here. We started with a wine tasting with Logan, which expertly helped us to select the perfect bottle to share. The vibe was great and the room was filled with customers that acted more like family. Board games, food delivery, pizza, dancing...they even had a chocolate fondue set up - what more could you want? Fast forward to our anniversary date night last night. It was none other than Logan that picked up the phone when my boyfriend called ahead to let them know our plan to return and celebrate. He not only remembered us from our first date, but when we arrived, wished us a Happy Anniversary and had set up a full chocolate & wine tasting spread at the very same table. I believe Vines and Canines was opened just for me. I love great patios, music, wine, bourbon, dogs, and cool people. Vines and Canines has all of this and does it perfectly. If you haven't been here, you MUST try it. It is a fantastic place to take some friends, have a double date, or lounge out with your pooch. (inside or out!) Total slice of awesomeness. Its a lot bigger inside than what you would expect. There are comfy lounge chairs, barstools, and patio furniture. Take your pick. Lots of wine to choose from and everything I saw was around $30 and under for a bottle. You can either buy a bottle or buy something by the glass ($5-7 per glass?). You even pay once you are done and leaving, making it some like a cool, friendly dive instead of an establishment only wanting your money. Employees (or the owner? Not sure...) checked up on us as well, which was really nice. It felt like they really wanted you to enjoy yourself. Dogs get loved on. The other "guests" were really friendly. The wine was great and they will even chill it for you. They have trivia night on Wednesdays and "conversation" cards on the tables to play with. This dog-friendly wine bar is also a great spot to paws -- er, pause -- in your day, even if you don't have Fido in tow! I had passed this place frequently when meeting friends at Great Flood Brewery. I knew that the concept was a place to bring well-behaved pooches and also stop in imbibe. While I don't have a dog of my own, I finally got to check the place out recently while in the neighborhood with a friend and their four-pawed best friend. The inside of the tore itself is beautiful, with hardwood floors and high ceilings, with a great variety of bottled wines and other libations for sale. In the back part of the store is the wine bar. The sommelier let us try a sip of one of the wines that day, and my friend and I both decided on the Semillon (Le Hameau). In addition to wine, there was also Sangria and several cocktails availale to purchase by the glass. While the sommelier indicated that there is patio seating outside in addition to the table on the sidewalk at Douglas Blvd, we opted to stay indoors and enjoy the cozy ambiance while we were there; truth be told, it was a little brisk outside when we went and indoors was simply a better choice. Her canine curled up in one of the doggie beds in the store while we sat, sipped, and savored the Saturday afternoon and visited over a refreshing glass of wine. This store is so welcoming, both to humans and canines alike. The main attraction here is that there isn't 80,000 choices for wine. I get lost in the bigger stores. The folks running this store cherry-pick only solid, tasty wines. This can be a real time-saver. Notably, the employee's know their stuff; not just some hourly worker there to collect a paycheck. The above was true at the old and new locations, but the NEW location has kicked it up a notch. They now have an intimate side-room that can be used for private gatherings and/or tastings. On many nights they now sell wine by the glass as well as a signature drink. The drink they had when I was there involved bourbon and mandarin oranges - it looked awesome - but it was a 'school night' so I stuck with a nice Americano Petit Syrah. Butter! I like 'keeping it local' and they also carry selected liquors. As always, it's pet friendly with a variety of dog paraphernalia (beds, bowls, etc.). I came here for the first time last weekend, on a Saturday evening. I love wine but I'm by no means a connoisseur. I'd read the review that the owners pick only the best wines. The wines by the glass are written on a chalkboard menu, so when you arrive you need to check that out and order at the front. It appears there are always 3-4 reds and 3-4 whites available plus bourbons. Prices ranged from 5-11 to most were about 6=8 dollars. I ordered the German Riesling and a friend ordered a recommended red (eek, can't remember) but both were amazing. We stayed longer than anticipated, just chatting with owners, other customers and playing with the dogs. A word of caution to dog owners.. If your dog isn't the best about staying indoors (mine..) keep an eye on the door. Some people weren't the best about firmly shutting it. The owner said he was looking to get a sign or stop or something... Just something to keep an eye for as both a customer and a dog owner, please keep the front door closed!! It was Friday in the time of Corona quarantining and I was looking to support a local business and have a little adventure. I've been to Vines a few times with friends and always had a great experience with their laidback, slightly sexy yet also comfortable, atmosphere and unpretentious customer service so decided I'd stock up on a few provisions there. I called to place my curbside order and said I wanted one box of Shania white since the shop's lovely owner had recommended it on their Instagram (I love that they have added more "value" options to their selection since they know folks are hurt in the pocketbook right now) and two surprise bottles! Wine is pretty personal but I'm not super picky so I told the guy a few qualities I don't like and otherwise gave him free reign to choose for me. He was definitely surprised by my request but when I arrived 15 minutes later he had picked a couple of great reds for me to try and I already love one of them!! They have a great wine selection and have added bourbons for those who want something other than wine. You can bring your furry friends with you and they have outdoor seating when it's warm. I can't say enough great things about Logan. He is always so welcoming and helpful in picking out a great wine that I have never tried before. We have been for some of their tastings like their charcuterie night with French wines. I have been here for a ladies night where we brought various desserts and had Logan pair us with some wine. My dog Sable likes it because the owner doesn't mind if she is off leash when they aren't busy, she gets treats, and the owner even gave her a toy on one of her first visits. The thing I love most about living near Douglass Loop is the sense of community and the small-town feel I get despite being in a city. Vines & Canines caters perfectly to that feeling for me. I've been in twice now...the first time, it was a slow evening so the owner encouraged us to let our dogs off leash to walk around and sniff while we enjoyed glasses of wine! On our most recent visit, we just popped in for some dog treats, but were again greeted by a friendly employee. I enjoy coming in here and really getting a chance to talk to the guys who love wine and look forward to many more visits.
