Great food and good wine in the airport terminal. Who would've thought it existed? Well, it does in terminal 8 at JFK airport. We had two hours to kill before boarding my plane. We stumbled upon Vino Volo after looking for a bar with good beer selection. Apparently, that doesn't exist, so we gave this place a try with no expectations. First, we were gonna get wine by glass, but it doesn't make sense to pay for 3 glasses of wine for the price of a bottle. Even though they seem to have a generous pour here. We got a bottle of Dolcetto, which is a dry red wine with a hint of black cherry and cinnamon from Piedmont area in Italy for $40. We accompanied our wine with two dishes, 5-Piece Salmon Rolls and Brisket Sandwich. Both of them were great. I love those cornichons and caper berries! Why 3 stars then? Well, first of all, the bartender who was supposed to take care of us ended his shift at 4, so nobody paid attention to us afterwards. We were never asked how the food or wine was. Water had never been offered. No 'Thank You' was uttered when we left. Great experience, imho. read more

I had a few hours before my flight took off and I spotted this place closeby to my gate. Sitting down I was immediately welcomed by the staff. Looking over the menu, I saw a brunch of good choice both by the glass and server as flights. I decides to start with a glass of red wine and then ended up ordering a flights. What I specifically loved about this place Is the factura that they included information cards about each wine that included the taste profile as well as a detailed description. I also ended up ordering the cheese plate which was delicious!!!! The bartender was also very nice enough to pour my a glass of sparkling White that he suggested paired well with my plate. He was right because I ended up ordering another glass of that white wine. I spent a little over $50 bucks for the plate and the 2 glasses of wine, along with the wine flight. Definitely worth it and will be coming back if I fly out of this terminal again! read more

I can't believe this is an airport wine bar. The music. The wine list. The food. And the awesome service! We were served by Johnnie who actually UNDERSTANDS WINE!!! He was friendly and professional but his knowledge and passion for wine astounded me. My Father owns restaurants in England - so I have had my share of fancy wines - and have a strong understanding of it too. This place is a wine lovers dream. It's a nice place to hang out waiting for your flight. The cheese plates are solid -- the other food is kind of hit or miss. It's better than most airport garbage but maybe not as good as what you are paying for it. Today I had a salad with "roasted chicken" -- I'm not so sure about that. It was chicken, probably roasted at one point and then popped in the microwave. It was meh. That said, the wine is stellar. There are cushy seats and outlets galore. It's a nice oasis while traveling just stick to the cheese plates and of course, the wine. read more

This place is great! Nice wine stop before my flight to LAS VEGAS. Johnny & Marvin were fabulous bartenders. Very attentive , and even offered water. If you've read any of my reviews- I appreciate water especially paired with any alcoholic beverage. So, this place was fine. And I think 3 stars is pretty good for an airport. I was at gate 6;terminal 8; so it was a long walk to get to gate 41 area, but I had 2 hours to burn so... I decided to have this over the Irish bar with a huge line just across my gate because of the beautiful pictures my fellow yelpers had of the cheese and charcuterie plate. This place was interesting, I thought it was a closed-walled place but it was almost like an open air bar in the middle of two gates, which actually was quite nice because it was open and airy and you could watch the airplanes leave the gates etc. The services was attentive and polite, although I wondered the need for 5 employees for such a tiny area and not many seats. Maybe the food would have been a bit better quality if they hired one or two less people on that shift. The wine was very good. My husband got a flight of red, which he really enjoyed and I had a glass of sauvignon blanc which was pretty darn good. ( For some reason, New York only has good wines at the restaurants, but good luck finding a liquor store or convenient store with anything other than Pinot Grigio or just base sub-par vino. Anyway, the cheese plate I was here for: I love the extras that come with a cheese plate, the savory sweet, crunchy, creamy, salty, everything condiments are a huge player in the experience. I was disappointed however with the meats and cheeses. They were deli cuts at most! I could have bought a slice of Sargento cheddar, smoked Gouda, and parmesan and had a few slivers of capicolla, salami and mortadella for a lot less from any Italian deli around and maybe even just the grocery store, but it was edible. It was... good. It just was a let down from some of the pictures of nice big chunks for gorgonzola or brie and lovely crackers vs a stale few pieces of crostini. Its an airport, so honestly? I wouldn't have thought twice about it but I saw their previous versions of the cheese and charcuterie plate and so them I guess I was tainted. The lady next to me had a very nice looking tomato bisque and again the wine was awesome. I still would recommend, but I think they may have changed their food slightly. Oh, and someone posted a prosciutto and brie sando before? There was a girl that had that and boy did I wish I had gotten it. We kicked ourselves on the way out. I feel that it's weird to like an airport bar this much. And yet here I am--loving it. This place soothed me during my otherwise painfully long layover. The wait staff hustles hard and just does everything just a step above what you'd expect---and that's without the "in an airport" tag. I can vouch for the almonds, cheesy pasta, manchego and popcorn. Each of these beige foods made me happy in turn. Again: the wait staff! I should have left after one drink but was absolutely charmed into 3....whoops. Holy cow, I could not have been more disappointed with the service. We had 45 minutes before boarding and needed something to eat. We each ordered a glass of wine and when he came back with the wine, we ordered popcorn, and two sandwiches. After a while... like half an hour... the food still isn't at the table. Really? I know you're a wine bar, but this is still an airport. My boyfriend got up to see what the deal was. He came back and sat, being told that it would be out shortly. Ten minutes later, we're really annoyed. He goes up to tell them to pack it to go because at this point, we have to go to our plane. I let my boyfriend take the bag and I wait at the counter for the food. They hadn't even started making it!!! There's another guy sitting at the counter and he complains if his little crostinis are ready yet. He'd ordered a while ago too. So they stop making my food to make these three little crostinis. I'm not even mad that they made his food, more astounded that it took so long to put some spread on bread! So I get the food, have to double check that everything was in there... it wasn't... and then ask for the rest in order to high tail it to our gate. We enjoyed a pleasant light supper here to tide us over before our flight home. The delightful wine probably helped us later when they cancelled our flight so that we arrived home two days late. Happily, I did not anticipate this at the time so dinner was unspoiled. It was nice but do not expect gourmet. The brie was served cold. How hard can it be to leave a portion or two of cheese out of the fridge ready for serving. Oh, well. Salmon rolls were very good. The atmosphere of calm rest amid the airport rush was marred by loud music in their own zone. This was weird and a complete spasm of clash to what they were otherwise accomplishing. read more

I was on my way to Los Angeles last week when my flight was delayed due to a technical issue in the plane's engine. I was on my way to a job interview the following day and was doubly nervous about the delay. I stopped into Vino Volo in a semi-anxious state hoping to have a glass of wine to help calm my nerves while I waited for the next plane. I was greeted warmly by Francesca, a server who could sense my anxiety and asked about the flight issues. She kindly expressed her apologies and asked about my job interview, so we got to talking and she was both kind and sincere. I asked her about her recommendations, as I know very little about wine. She recommended a white wine flight that was delicious. I sat while drinking my wine and had a wonderful and reassuring conversation with her. I was indeed on the next flight out and Francesca made my wait entirely bearable.
