Found this place through Yelp and it is my new favorite now. The waiting time was longer than I'm used to at other places, but after the haircut, I could see why. They know their stuff and they take care of customers really well. The place has an old-fashioned Barber shop feel to it that appeals to me. Cannot recommend this place if you're looking for a pomp, side part, undercut, or really any other classic look. Service 2/5 stars: Called the day before for a five o'clock appointment. Walk in at 4:50 and they didn't even say hi or ask if I had an appointment. I sat there and watched them cut and was extremely disappointed at what I was seeing. The gentlemen right in front of me that was getting his hair cut by the Filipino man, did not look amused at all and I understood by seeing how his barber was cutting. I FINALLY got into a seat at about 5:30. Haircut 2/5 stars: I had the Filipino man, unfortunately. Compared to the other vintage barbershops I've been to, this guy seemed very inexperienced. Actually, even more so than a regular hair cuttery. I asked for a taper fade and yes he tapered and faded it but MAN was he rough with the clippers. He literally dug the clippers in my skin the whole time, I was about to tell him to chill out. Biggest thing is that he didn't seem to look like he enjoyed himself cutting hair. Place 5/5 stars: this is the only reason I gave it one extra star. The place looks great, very vintage looking from the walls to the chairs. Have good products (suavecito and layrite) Other than that, again I cannot recommend this place. If you really want a nice barbershop to give you a side part, pompadour, undercut or even just a fade, look elsewhere like Toppers, The Parlor, or even my favorite Lionshead. I have been going to this place for years but will never go again. I made an appointment and the company sent me a calendar reminder at the time I had scheduled, Friday, 12 February at 1030. When I got there, the barber I had scheduled with was MIA and the rest of the staff were looking around like scared rabbits. They asked if I could come back at 2:30-really? One of them asked me to pull it up on my phone and than told me that what I found was an earlier appointment. She then looked at her computer and said my appointment was actually for next week. When I got home, I checked their site and my iPhone calendar and my appointment was, indeed, for today at the time above. Somehow the shop had screwed it up and of course placed the blame on me. Nope--it was them. I've always had to wait past appointment time but was OK with it because the haircut is usually good. Delays past appointment time, schedule screw-ups, website very difficult to navigate. I'm not making an appointment to see the Queen of England, I'm just trying to get a haircut. Went to vintage barber shop today without an appointment. I read a lot of great reviews and some bad but decided to roll the dice. It's a small shop (4 chairs) but it's cozy. As soon as I walked in I was a little weary because it was only female barbers and I had a bad experience in the past at a sports clip. My son and I sat down and saw Mei working on a customer and my son liked her fade work and wanted to go with her. I had no problem asking Kathy if I could wait for Mei. Everyone was very pleasant at the shop. I went first and got an undercut and my son got a high fade with a hard part. I am extremely happy with the work and will definitely be going to them again. read more

About 3 weeks ago I called vintage to make an appointment for a haircut. The girl I spoke to told me that it is walk-in ONLY. I accepted that and went in later that day. I got my haircut and overtipped because the girl got me in 15 minutes before they closed. Fast forward to today. I went in on a Monday afternoon about 1 1/2 hours before closing. There were 3 people ahead of me. About 30 minutes in, a guy comes in, says he has an appointment and is seated ahead of 2 of us. Apparently, the first girl I spoke to had the policy mistaken. Another 30 minutes goes by, it is finally my turn and while the lady is cleaning her station a old guy walks in. He shakes the hand of the ladies husband and goes to the back room to remove his shirt. I didn't realize this until he sat down in her chair. Literally he walks in and is seated 30 seconds later while I had been waiting an hour. Not sure the relationship or if he had made an appointment but it was pretty convenient timing. I'm soured on this establishment and won't be coming back. If you do decide to go here I'd recommend calling in advance and making a solid appointment. Hopefully you'll avoid my experience, unless one of their preferred clients wants a haircut (perception that was given). Update (Response to Kathy): I would like to know, after over an hour of waiting, why they let someone that strolls in within 20 minutes of closing ahead me. He came in and was seated in 30 seconds despite there being 2 people who had been waiting (including myself). It seemed like it had been coordinated by text. Frankly, I won't be coming back. After waiting over an hour, with no communication from the staff that there was an appointment or anything else ahead of me and the other clients... I'm going to stick with Lucky Devil. Knowing of only one "classic men's barbershop" in the Tidewater area I decided to do a quick Google search and Vintage Barber Co. came up. At first I was hesitant but decided to give them a try with the attitude, "If I don't like their haircuts I'll just go back to the other place." Now I couldn't be happier that I went to Vintage Barber Co.! The shop was a little smaller than I was expecting and there were only two barbers at the time, Patty and Kathy, but they were the nicest barbers I've probably ever met. They engage with the customers and give great haircuts! Did I mention...free beer(I believe that's only when the clock hits 6 though)! When I was up for my cut I told Kathy exactly what I wanted and showed her a picture and she was able to give me the haircut I was looking for! Also, If you're a new customer you're haircut is finished off with a hot towel and a massage! If you're hesitant, Kathy mentioned she has been barbering for 20+ years so trust that she knows what she's doing! The only downside to my experience was the wait time. There were about four or five people ahead of me and two people had appointments. But the great haircut and customer service made it worth the wait. So only thing I'd suggest for a new customer is to set up an appointment. While walk-ins are welcome, you may not be so lucky and catch them in between appointments. So for my rating...5 stars! They know how to treat their customers and they just found a returning one! read more

Rather than name names, this is a review of the store and the general attitude of the store, and as I had as a whole. Note: I'm from California. I needed a haircut to hold me over for a wedding in North Carolina, and after reading some reviews, thought this would be the place to go. Let me tell you, this has to be one of the worst experiences I have ever had at a barbershop, ever. I'm pretty sure half these reviews are bought or incentivized somehow. Anyway, I read online that they didn't take appointments, but decided to call anyway, what the heck. Was pleased to hear that I could get an appointment, so I make one for my little cousin and myself a couple hours before we went in. I talked to a dude, and told him I'd call back to confirm the appointment since I needed to make sure I could borrow the car from my aunt. Once that was done, I call back, speak to a lady, who I can hear confer with the guy I was supposed to make the appointment with. I arrive a couple minutes early. There are two people in the shop cutting hair, one lady and the guy who my appointment was with. So the guy who was supposed to cut my hair wasn't ready as he was with someone else, and by the time he was finished 30 minutes or so after my appointment, he made off like he was leaving to lunch to leave me and my cousin there with the one lady who was still with someone. I told him politely that I made an appointment with him, that I spoke with him over the phone. He acknowledged that he talked with me, but apparently through some miscommunication, my name wasn't added to the scheduling book. Lady's fault? I don't know. Either way, I'm still here and have a schedule. You can hear the lady barber mumbling something under her breath like "WTF, why are you leaving me alone?". The guy simply says he'll try to be back in 20-30 minutes. I'm like what by 1pm? He's like yea. Alright, guess I have no choice. #@%!. During that time the lady barber seemed pretty cool, and finished cutting the hair of whoever she was with, and started on my cousin. She seemed like she knew what she was doing. Said she had a parent who cut hair when she was a kid, and that she had 20-30 years herself. I'm like cool. It looks like she's doing a good job from a distance, and she has a chill personality and I'm just sympathizing for the fact that she was left alone and she's there like a champ. 1pm rolls by, and another customer walks in after a few came in and left. 1:15 and the guy barber finally comes back from eating. Alright cool, my cousin's almost done. I can get started with this dude and don't have to feel guilty about not going with the girl who I was still unsure about skill-wise. Turns out the guy who walked in at 1, had an appointment at 1. Are you $@!#ing kidding me? You can tell this guy barber is playing favorites, that this is a regular, that I'm just a new person. If I went before him, you could tell this guy would rush on me and do a shitty job. Being the nice guy I am, I told the guy to go ahead of me, I'll just wait for my cousin to finish up and go with the girl barber who will have all the time in the world. Figured no matter how bad she is, karma will work out with me in my favor for being nice. Nope. So the lady finishes up my cousin. He had a hard part with a comeover type style, and a half inch of the hairline where the part began, she shaved the same size on both sides. Hard to explain, but it was an OOPS! moment for sure. No, you can't fix that in mix. I saw that, but still decided to take the plunge and chance it anyway. Big mistake, I explained a couple things about how I liked it, and I pride myself on details of how my head's shaped, what I want, (bald fade, no lines, where I want the lines, etc...), and she scoffs like she is the shit and even said some kind of stupid insult about my current barber back in the Bay Area, Cali, who probably clowns on every barber in this shop. Long story short, and a whole long time later, she doesn't do what I asked her, spent a whole lot of counterproductive time fading when she could have used simple techniques to cut her time in half, and at the end, I could still see lines, and they were uneven. She had left several nicks on my skin that bled from her clippers and from the straight edge. The fade was so military and so #@%#ed up in certain places, after I told her to fix those obvious lines that a preschooler could spot, I just said %#!@ it, paid my money, and left. The guy barber even wanted to bump my hand on the way out. Man, !@#% off. In summation, I could have done a better job myself, and have. I pay money so people can take care of the parts I can't see so easily. After this haircut, I just wanted to shave it all off. I thought maybe I was being picky. My cousin was nice about it, he's young though. My aunt was being nice, she's out of touch though. Let's just say that my cousin admitted he was lying, and I had several people comment on how stupid my hair looked. End of story. read more

Finding a great barber is next to impossible, but not any longer. I came from out of town to cut my ridiculously thick hair that's overgrown and unmanageable and Andrea did an exceptional job. This is the first haircut in which I've had NOTHING to complain about. They're just the real deal. Clean, retro environment is comfortable; great hair and beard products and they actually care about my preferences and took time to understand what I wanted. My husband came in a few weeks ago and got a haircut that was excellent, jump to a week ago (August 12th I believe) I had asked him to make an appointment for my son to get his hair done as well because I loved how well they did my spouses. When they came home I was so disappointed to see what a shabby job they did at my sons hair. The fade was horrible and the cut was so uneven that his "Bangs" went across his face at an angle. I took my hubby here after 2 weeks of no shaving. I have to say that this was his first experience with a hot towel shave. The three ladies were wonderful and the atmosphere is intimate and cozy. I felt like I was back home in my small town. Patty was the one who did his haircut and shave. I will admit his face felt smoother than a baby's butt. She was very detailed including a trim to his eyebrows and making sure his ears were trimmed. The hubby would highly recommend this place for any guy to get pampered. Just the atmosphere alone would make him come back. All these women were great and sociable. Pamper your guy either with a haircut or shave he'll love you for it. read more

I want to start off by saying, I am not to picky with my haircuts. I am always willing to try a new place out, and I won't care to much if I get a bad haircut. My hair will grow back, and I will just try a new place. (I am new to the area.) I just wanted a my side's cut short and blended into the top. Basically a high and tight. Nothing fancy. This girl buzzes the sides all one length. I don't like it but that's fine. She then cuts a line to part my hair. I didn't ask for that, but to late she did it. She then goes ahead and buzzes my side's to basically skin. No fade at all. On top of all of that, when I got home I realized she left patches around my ears. This is honestly the only haircut that I have ever been genuinely embarrassed with. I am seriously contemplating buzzing it all to one length. I'm not particularly picky, but I have had a few bad barbershop experiences recently and decided to try Vintage Barber due to the overwhelmingly positive reviews. I requested a pretty standard haircut (essentially a high and tight with a fade). I initially was unaware how bad the haircut was because the barber lathered my hair with tons of gel and dry shampoo. After taking a shower upon returning home, I discovered to my horror that I had a Mohawk. The barber failed to do anything resembling a fade. I had to drive to a Great Clips to get it fixed. While my individual experience is probably not indicative of the overall quality of the barbers at Vintage Barber (sounds like most people liked their haircuts and enjoyed their experience), I wrote this review as a cautionary tale. read more

You wouldn't think it would be hard to find a good barber, but it is. Year after year, my husband tries to find someone that can give a good military cut...when he locates one, it seems like we are heading to the next duty station! And the process starts all over again. Now that my son is older, he likes to make sure his hair is right and tight...but he has A LOT of hair...very thick. I have seen barbers mess up his hair like something fierce. So, when we found this shop, in March, about a month after we returned to the area, it was like the heavens opened up and sang! LOL The shop is small, but they have 3 chairs and talented ladies there that can probably cut hair and trim beards with their eyes closed and still get it done right. Between my husband and son, we have been there about 6 times over the past 5 months and we will keep coming back. Keep up the good work ladies! These reviews are a Joke, Right? This place was a Complete Cluster F&@k! I had never been to this place before but looking for a new barber, I called before going, to see if I needed an appointment, "no we only do walk ins" I get there and there's about 7 people already waiting and 4 people in the barber chairs. I stand there for a moment looking for some kind of guidance but the "barbers" just stare, so I just stand. This place is Literally smaller than my closet So I was standing literally inches from someone getting their haircut The barbers and chairs are not even one foot away from where you have to sit and wait ( if you're lucky enough to sit) They were blowing hair all over everyone. There is No Order At All! No one knows when it is there turn, barbers don't care and it's absolute Chaos! person finishes, a seat on the bench opens up so I decide to wait. I sit, ask another guy waiting how this works, he says I think it's first come first serve but has never been before either. 2 or 3 people walk in after me and it gets down to 1 or 2 people before me, "barbers" can't figure out who's next and people are getting agitated. There are no signs explaining Anything like.. No Cards, Cash Only!? 1st Come 1st serve? Sometimes we do Appts? Total Chaos!! At this point I had been waiting for approx. an Hour! When 3 people walk in and jump right in front of me and 2 other guys that had been waiting for An Hour! Because They Had "Appointments"? No apologies, no explanations. I just stood up and walked the F out. The guy that walked in behind me did the same thing. We sat for over an hour and were no closer to getting a haircut than when we first walked in. This experience was much like I'd imagine the experience at the social services office on a busy Monday morning to beg for food stamps. To say I will never return to this shack would be an understatement! Hahaha I'd rather wait in the bread line in some poverty stricken city in N. Korea. Oh.. And some guy walked in off the street, went into the bathroom, which is seriously Right there! This is the only Barber Shop I have found in Hampton Roads that, so I thought, was a great place. My last Few visits have been different. Seems like there are always scheduling conflicts and there is absolutely no room to sit/stand while waiting to get a cut. I also found out that my normal Barber, Dawn, is no longer @ Vintage. Luckily we were able to reconnect on FB and she will continue to be my Barber. I'm not sure what is going on at Vintage but there are some Major changes needed as it is going downhill quickly! Go. To. This. Place. I gave it a couple haircuts before I wrote a review. I've been in Virginia Beach for more than a year now and finally found a barber that cuts my hair the way I want it. I simply was looking for someone to give me a fade and I found a shop that can do that with ease and even more. I get a nice trim for my comb over and a straight razor to top it off. I don't have a beard, but the work I've seen them do on beards is awesome. All the ladies I've seen cut hair do so with precision. It has really been a struggle for me to find a good barber shop since moving back to the area last year and I've been experimentally growing my hair out this entire year partially due to that fact. I've been wanting to visit this shop for a while now and with my wedding coming up this Friday I thought now is the perfect time. As a walk-in, I was fortunate enough to be able to sit in Kathy's (one of the shop owners) chair. I have pretty thick, straight hair that can be a struggle to manage so the perfect haircut is a must and Kathy understood that without me having to say a word. She along with the other barbers working that day are very friendly and skilled. They take their time to get to know their clients.
