    Build your own cheese box
    Julie S.

I loved visiting this spot. They have a good selection of cheese and charcuterie and I really appreciated the option of building your own cheese box! They had samples so you could taste the cheeses, and all kinds of options. This is located in a food hall, so there are other options if you want a full meal. We also visited the brew pub nearby for lunch. The fudge looked really good as well but I was too full from lunch. I found the parking lot a little bit annoying but did manage to get a space.

Located within the newly opened SLO Marketplace, this is the best cheese shops that I have visited! Wide selection of cheeses, from hard, to soft creamy Brie cheeses. They have a cheese aging room with huge wheels of cheese. A cheese self serve section (for people that want to enjoy a nibble without service). I highly recommend their build a box: pick a size and fill with your choices of salami, fruits and cheese!

We were checking out the bustling SLO Ranch Market and came across Vintage Cheese. They have a variety of handout fudge, charcuterie boxes, and of course, a ton of tasty cheese. We liked the garlic cheddar and Gouda. Good variety of snacks and a cheese wheel room. Only thing missing: sourdough baguettes! Pretty nice spot in the marketplace.

Hidden in this small beautiful complex in San Luis Obispo is a wonderland of cheese. Cheese wheels, cheese blocks, cheese sample, you name it and they have it. Reset all the sample and decide which is your favorite and make yourself a cheese sample box to sit down and enjoy yourself.

We noticed SLO Ranch Market along the way and stopped in to check it out when heading back into town.

I learned to check the website for current availability and prices before getting too excited about a particular cut or item, as they sell out of some items very quickly. Also, to avoid any sticker shock of higher-priced meats (well worth the cost if in your budget, IMO). I love the scenic drive alongside the morros and the olive trees out front (off the main campus)--plenty of parking. Friendly students greet you and are there to answer questions. There is usually an assortment of items on the front table (such as any produce in stock, flowers, etc), then make a right into the cooler room, where you'll find the refrigerated and frozen meats, cheeses, and eggs, as well as jams, chocolate bars, and some cute merch. They have little shopping baskets to carry your haul. We have really enjoyed their frozen chicken wings, all the steaks, the pork chops and loin, sausages, and ohhhh, the bacon (plain, flavored, and ends). On a trip in late April, the eggs were $5.75/dozen, which I thought was a good price for the bounty of happy hens and quality, fresh eggs. Meat prices vary and are mostly priced by the pound. On this trip, the fresh top sirloin was $13/pound and a gorgeous cut with just the right amount of marbling. Fresh pork loin chops were $7.00/pound, with a small fat cap. The tri-tip is usually a little higher than Ralph's but there is a difference that may make it worthwhile if it fits in your budget. Sometimes the frozen items of the same meat are a little less per pound than the fresh. The Swiss sausages were $10.50 and Bratwurst were $10 per pound (four sausages per pound). We also love their real beef snack sticks ($8, and no weird ingredients). I also indulged in the beautiful flower bouquet, $16 -- which are still as fresh as can be four days after purchase. They also have a rewards program, so you can get a "VIP discount" of 15% after three visits, among other rewards. Look for sales of items on their website (for example, last weekend the chicken wings were 10% off). Yay, go Mustangs! We've been trying to buy from local farms, and this is a great option for SLO County.

On every visit, we were pleasantly greeted by students working there and found a great selection of products. Tomorrow I will be having their chorizo for breakfast and I am sure that it will be delicious. We will definitely be back on our many trips to Cambria.

After 4 PM, they offer the "420 Special," which makes their sandwiches only $9. They also have online ordering, which I attempted to use, but they had already reached their limit for online orders because they were so busy. And after visiting, I can see why! Despite the crowd, they've perfected their sandwich ordering system, it's super efficient. When you walk in, you fill out a small paper checklist with your order and hand it to one of the employees at the register. They submit your order, you pay, and then wait for your sandwich. Expect at least a 25-minute wait, especially during busy hours. I tried the Tropical Vacation sandwich: smoked turkey, jalapeño havarti, "the works," romaine, sprouts, avocado, honey mustard, cranberry sauce, and sliced sourdough. I swapped the sourdough for Dutch Crunch bread, and it was PERFECT. It was the thickest, juiciest, and most flavorful sandwich I've ever had. I'll be dreaming about it until I can have it again. The pictures truly don't do these sandwiches justice, they were massive. I also tried the Spring Club sandwich. It was just as thick and delicious, though not quite as juicy as the Tropical Vacation. Honestly, I want to try ALL of their sandwiches because I have no doubt they're all amazing. The shop itself is super cute with a vintage feel, and they also offer a wide variety of beverages, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Food: 10/10 Service: 9/10 Ambiance: 9/10 Overall: 9/10

It wasn't the quickest option because there was one person rolling dough off to the side and one person handling everything else including making the food and taking orders, so I would expect to wait. If you have the time though, the breakfast bagel sandwiches were good and they also have a chocolate zucchini loaf that we also bought. The bagels tasted fresh and the sandwiches were very filling. I didn't add anything to my bagel (beyond the cream cheese, tomato, and avocado that was included in the breakfast bagel), but my boyfriend added bacon and it was a generous amount. The chocolate zucchini loaf is honestly more of a cake and quite a bit sweeter than other zucchini bread I've tried. If you're looking for a denser chocolate cake with little flecks of green, it's great. They also offered samples, and we bought the chocolate zucchini loaf because we enjoyed the sample. There isn't anywhere to sit inside but there are a couple of tables outside on the patio. Only a couple of them had umbrellas, and unfortunately we were at one without an umbrella, but it wasn't too bad since it was earlier in the day. This is definitely a more casual place, and worth going to if you have some extra time to spend and it's convenient to you.
