A righteous indie record store with a little something for everybody. I was so glad to have time to visit on a recent trip up to Portland, as I've followed the shop's great Instagram page for some time. The visit did not disappoint, as I left with more records than my carry on would hold. Thankfully, VRP had an extra box, and wrapped my stash up carefully and pointed me to the closest post office. The guy at VRP told me about media mail. This was amazing, as I was able to ship almost 20 records home for under $20! The shop does tons of cool listening events for new releases. I was hoping to be in the area while one went on, but alas, no luck. I can't wait for my next trip to Portland so I can get back to this gem of a record store. read more

This was always a great place for years (decades?) under Toby, but Steve has brought it to new life with events and lots of fun stuff. Definitely check it out! This is the only music store in Portland that I've found that has a Women's Music Section. Yay!

called and asked about if there was any way there would be any sort of availability of a listening party exclusive product the day after as I couldn't attend, someone let out a light chuckle at me and said "nope." and that was it. I said thanks and hung up. A few weeks later and suddenly that product, sealed brand new (I assume left over stock) is being sold by them on an online marketplace marked up for 2x the price of the actual product. Quaint little shop that is, luckily, on my commute home from work. The staff (both of them) are fun to visit with while perusing the stacks. The history of music in Portland comes to life from listening to them reminisce about who has come to play, who started out and the venues. Lots of good vintage jazz (think 50's/60's). I have been to many, if not most vinyl record shops in Portland, but I had not ventured to Vinyl Resting Place, since I usually don't visit North Portland much. So finally I found myself with some available time, and I decided to pay them a visit. What a wonderful place this is; a real jewel indeed. Their selection of old rock is quite remarkable and well curated, and the jazz section is a real work of love. The records themselves are in far better condition than what can usually be seen in other stores, and they take good care if it too, every album protected by a plastic outer sleeve. The prices are quite reasonable, and I even found some gems for under $5. I am really grateful for the superb personal attention that the owners give to their customers. I've grown accustomed to having the record store clerks just ignore their customers -that is, if you're lucky, for many others seem to enjoy abusing us-, and so finding people who clearly enjoy their jobs is, in a word, refreshing. Vinyl Resting Place is the kind record store that I would love to run when I retire. read more

My wife and I went to the local theater to see The Nun this last Saturday and we walked by this store. There was an ad for this store before the movie started. So my wife went to go play video poker nearby and I went looking through the $1 record selection. I found a couple of albums, a Styx album and a Firefall one. I saw Firefall at a company picnic in Clark Co. in the late 90's they got a couple hits I remember as a kid. Those were my 2 $1 ea. Records and I found a $6 Robert Plant album I wanted so I was really excited. I get home, Mr. Roboto skipped so bad couldn't listen to it, same with several songs on Firefall. I figured well, $1 records what do I expect? Crossed my fingers and tried Robert Plant, 3 of the first songs skipped so bad could not listen to it. I have a brand new Turntable, so to make sure I put on my old Rush, ELO and a Planet P records I've had since I was a kid, not one song on any of my old records skip so I know it's not my player. I live in Beaverton and the store here is in St. John's. I drive Germantown road to get there on a Sunday so it's out of my way. It's way easier for me just to download ITunes for these albums, but I go see if the owner will exchange for another. He asks if it was my record player after I explain, told him no, tried my old records works fine. He lets me exchange for an $8 Cars album. He is not especially friendly today, that's alright, I understand, maybe he thought I was scamming him, just recording those 3 and trying to get another one. Problem is, this is out of my way and inconvenient to drive there a second time. So, can't sleep this morning, thought I'd get coffee ready a little early and pull out the Cars record and listen. It's a REO Speed Wagon record! Not even their good one. I'm not going to bother listening to the darn thing as I'm so pissed. My own darn fault. I looked the record over for scratches I just didn't pay close enough attention to read the label on the thing as the dudes giving me the suspicious eye and I just wanted to get the hell out of there. Next time I'll stick to going to Every Day Music in Beaverton. Never going back here again nor would I ever recommend this place. Don't sell faulty crap and confirm what's in the sleeve. read more

This is a fun place to wander into on a Sunday afternoon and just peruse. That's exactly what I did last Sunday. I've been in here several times and it's a small little shop. But there are quite a few interesting items in here. In addition to records and CDs, there are some cool band posters from the 60s and 70s up on the walls for sale. They even look like they were signed by the artist. I was a bit mezmerized! Friendly, neighborhood record shop. Nice little record shop in St. John's. A lot of the oldies but if you dig you can find some nice prices. Many of the records were in excellent condition. Not great for punk/metal/indie. LARGE jazz selection. I wouldn't drive across town but if you are in the area definitely check them out. read more

I visited this store on a whim and left impressed and holding a record I had wanted for years. They have a great selection and great prices. I payed $8 for an utterly unscratched copy of Dark Side of the Moon. The man who checked me out was friendly and helpful and the selection was great. Everything was easy to find and I wanted to stay longer. I couldn't imagine anything to improve about this store. read more

Great time in here today coming in with my husband to find him a treat and ending up with six or seven albums for myself. Love the lady who runs this place and have been a longtime fan, and after a long time away from the shop it's still going strong with a killer selection and a friendly vibe with zero attitude like you see in the newer hipster record stores. Put simply, Vinyl Resting Place is an analog oasis in a dry and over-sanitized digital desert. They deal in things that are flat, round, vintage, interesting, have a vinyl groove, qualify as "Jazz, Rock, Country, Folk, Blues, etc," and play at 33 rpm or 45 rpm. You will find their knowledge of these objects to be expert, as is their very experienced physical assessment of quality and wear. I have found their reasonable sell prices frequently underestimate the quality of their discs (i.e., I have found their quality to be above average). Also, if you are selling, and your discs are good quality, well cared-for, in-demand discs, in my experience you will get fair prices. Vinyl Resting place has bought many discs from me, everything from 60s import pressings of Beatles, to audiophile rarities in mint condition, in some cases unopened still in shrink wrap, and I was always pleased with their price offer. Please visit this precious and personable gem of a store, spend a few dollars, chat with Toby or Pat, and when you get home be prepared to be amazed by real music.
