My kids are very competitive and all we hoped for was the kids to get in some good rolls and learn a technique or two. Decided to hit up local gyms near our hotel location and found Paragon Atascadero, a city we never even heard of. We set everything up through text message with a lady named Mallory and just like that the appointment was set. The gym is located inside a fitness gym which is pretty unique to us. Once we walked in, the lady in the front desk welcome us with open arms. Professor Chris was so welcoming, it was like we already knew each other. I can tell this man loves the art of Jiu Jitsu and the further development of it, in this area. We were the only Asian family in there but everybody that spoke to us was so welcoming and friendly. It was a small town but the people had giant hearts. This is all based off one visit and we got exactly what we were looking for. There is tons of potential for this place to grow. The mat space is huge, it's clean and the professor and coaches seemed very caring. My kids are grey belts, competed in many tournaments and won lots of medals. We been to many gyms to cross train all over Southern California and based off my own assessment, this gym is a must join if you live in the area. Highly recommended.

If you don't, you'll just be that much older when you finally do. I dropped in for a class while on vacation with my family in Cambria. Brent Dugan, owner and instructor here could not have been more welcoming, which is the hallmark of a great gym in my opinion. I came for the 6 am class so not a lot of folks in just yet, the mats were very clean and the gym has a lot of room. We spoke a bit about my experience level and he went into detail about what to expect with the class. The instruction in the class was very clear and easy to understand. I really liked the way Brent broke down the steps into the basic move we were working on that day, then finishing the move, and finally what it's going to look like in real rolling, reviewing possible reactions and counters. The welcoming feeling continued from Brent to all of the rest of the members of the class. Finding rolling partners during free-roll was easy, which isn't always the case being a larger person, and each partner had great technique and was quick to reset after a tap, ready to go. I felt no ego rolling which can be difficult for some newbies or visitors. Brent, Simon, Clint, Kirk, Kevin, and the rest, thank you for the time this week!

The positives: - the owner is very nice and accommodating for my unusual request of just a single month membership to keep up my fitness and boxing practice while visiting for a month. - some of the trainers were amazing (others not at all (more on that later). - I do enjoy the no set class times so you can just go whenever you're done with work or need to get to the gym "now" because your motivation may not last. - They seemed to do quite a bit of member events and socials outside of the gym (unsure if that's because it was the holiday season or if this typical year round). - When I had a trainer I liked, it was a pretty good workout and can see why some people enjoy 9Round. The negatives: - the trainer makes ALL the difference. I honestly wish I had explored more of who the other trainers would be during the week vs during the weekends. I started adjusting my work schedule to avoid trainers I didn't like... - If you don't like super loud music in a tiny space, this isn't for you. I'd leave with a headache most days because it was just too much. - This isn't a gym for people who need physical accommodations. Some trainers were better than others, but they definitely didn't enjoy the fact I didn't feel comfortable kicking given surgical metal in my ankle and so it hurt like a MoFo to do any of those moves. You also ALWAYS start in Round One with jump rope... that was brutal. - The class times are really bizarre. They're open in the morning for a bit, close for an hour, and then open again for 90 minutes and then are closed all the way until after work hours. It's weird they don't have a lunch time option given how quick and efficient the workout is. I wish I would have realized that before signing up. - They make you switch your stance all the time (fighter stance to non-dominate stance) and even within the same combo. While I get what they're trying to do (even out the effort on both sides), this lead to me pulling muscles because my form was so off when trying to be SouthPaw vs just staying in my fighter stance. Not to mention it's super confusing to think about it when you're already taxing your system with a hard workout. All in all, I see what people enjoy 9Round and are very loyal to it, but it just wasn't for me. I want more of a mix of weight lifting and cardio and this gym just doesn't offer that type of workout.

There's no class times so you can pop in literally whenever. There are 9 two minute rounds of various cardio kickboxing and strength exercises and theres always a trainer available to help you with your form and make sure you are pushing yourself to the limit! All of this while monitoring your heart rate to make sure you are doing so safely! Stephanie the owner is so sweet and has really put together a killer crew.

Working in Oakland and being home just once a month made it difficult for me. Fast forward to 2025 and I retired and added myself, again to her membership. While my fitness goals have changed, I returned to the club and have been using the pool three days a week. With a reconstructed knee and shoulder, this just takes pressure off those joints. I've been happy with my time at the club. It can be daunting to "get in, get out" during the busy periods of the days, when equipment is being used and you are waiting. I've been lucky to get my workouts in quickly in the early afternoon, both in the weight room and in the pool. The one complaint I know my girlfriend carries, is the availability of classes, especially in Paso. Her going to SLO after work made things quick and easy, but the class schedule is hit and miss for her in Paso. She does with there was a bit more consistency. Aside from that I've been happy with the equipment and cleanliness of the facility. The staff has always been attentive and able to answer my questions. Even better, the pool was redone in Paso (2026). Thank Kennedy for a good club experience

I don't review stuff very often, but I wanted to say a few words about SMBJJ and how it's changed…read moremy life, and hopefully give anyone who hasn't been to the gym a good idea of what to expect. I've been training here for about 5 months now and I've absolutely fallen in love with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I've always been kind of a skinny nerd, into computers and never did any real sports throughout my life, but I was encouraged by a close friend to come check out SMBJJ sometime and I'm glad I finally took him up on it and dragged my butt out of bed and made it here for the 5am class. I had no idea what to expect coming into this gym, but I realized right away that the camaraderie and humility demonstrated by everyone who trains here is absolutely fantastic. These guys are here to train and keep the drama out of the picture. No egos, no bullying, no BS. I've improved my BJJ game from knowing absolutely nothing to holding my own against guys almost twice my size in the matter of 5 months. Not only that, this sport has taught me discipline and given me an incredible amount of confidence that I never had before. I constantly find myself watching videos online to learn new techniques and methodologies of BJJ and I love trying and learning new things every morning. Oh, and I've never been in better shape, which is fantastic for someone almost in their 40s! Though I've only interacted with Chris a handful of times since I started here, I know he is an amazing stand-up guy who takes his gym seriously and constantly demonstrates his commitment to making every person here feel welcome and part of the SMBJJ family. He's always quick to respond if I ever need help with anything and his dedication to making sure everyone grows together here is great. I love that he puts on BBQs and does fun stuff for everyone in the gym from time to time too. I usually train with Ethan Brown in the 5am class (yes, I know that sounds way too early, but it's worth getting up for) and it has been fantastic. His dedication to the art and excellent teaching skills have can brought me to a very high level understanding of the art of BJJ in a very short time. I love how he focuses on the critical fundamentals in order to create a more effective jiu jitsu game instead of just teaching "move 1 into move 2 into move 3." He also keeps it fun by sometimes throwing in some sneaky techniques or new ways to pass guard while keeping his overall teaching method laser-focused and pushing everyone to be their best. Aside from the fantastic community, the gym itself is great- the mat area is HUGE and very high quality. Parking can be a bit crowded for some classes, but there's always a spot somewhere. There are no showers, but that's fine- I prefer to shower at home anyway. TLDR: gym is 5/5, people are 5/5, you will learn a lot very quick and it will change your life for the better! Come check it out!
