So, a week before, I came into the Moto Photo in Glenview to get a European passport photo. The Embassy had sent me instructions on getting the photo taken, which I brought with me. I showed the owner, John, the instructions and he said, "Those aren't right. It's cutting off the top of your head." But I was stubborn and insisted he take the photos per the instructions. He did, of course. When I came back to pick up my photos, John gave me a second set based on what he knew to be right. "There's no charge. But you might need them." A few days later I'm at the Luxembourg Embassy in Washington DC, filling out my passport application. I hand my passport photos to the woman behind the desk. "Oh dear," she said. "These are incorrect. The top of your head cannot be cut off." Fortunately, I had John's second set with me. I showed them to the woman. "Ah yes!" she exclaimed. "These are perfect!" I was clipped head top away from not getting my passport and wasting my trip to DC. A lot of other photo places might have said, "That knucklehead is wrong. But he insisted." And just give me the incorrect photos. But John saved me from my ignorance and gave me what he knew was right. This is one Luxembourg citizen and passport holder who is now a Moto Photo Glenview fan for life.

I read recently that film cameras are making a comeback. I love it! There was always something…read moremagical and exciting about opening up your package of photos. But anyway, someone had jammed a memory card into the Nikon SLR and broke it. No amount of YouTubing could fix it. I was told about Authorized Photo Service in Morton Grove. It is pricey to fix, but this location is local, instead of sending it to a faraway place. I picked it up after a few weeks and it was clean, nicely packed. Hopefully magical photos will develop (do you see what I did there?)

Needless to say that the lens was not fixed in time until I was literally flying back from my trip. I had only used the lens 2 times after that and immediately my camera gave me an error 01 lens communication. I took it to my regular repair guy and spend more money to get it fixed properly. When I asked directly whether this was an issue they could repair or what the likely cause might be, I stopped receiving responses altogether. No clear explanation, repair option, or referral was provided. I was looking for professional diagnosis or a clear yes/no on service. Unfortunately, the communication and follow-through were lacking, which made it difficult to trust moving forward.

However, for anyone looking for an alternative, I found a camera repair store downtown, called Int'l Camera, that fixed my camera with a NEW part from Sony, not a USED one on Ebay, but without the communication problems and limited store hours I experienced with John. Ultimately, it's up to others to decide if they want to patronize this store, I just chose not to!!! P.S. John don't try to contact me, or I'll have Yelp intervene.

I called Saul and he asked me to describe the camera issue to him. He felt he could repair it and also quoted me a price, which was acceptable. I took our camera to him and within a week, he called that it was repaired and ready to be picked up...and at the price he quoted. I've used the developing and scanning services for bnw and colored film. What's interesting is that…read morethis store, unlike other labs I've been to, did not cut my film to fit into A4 sleeves so that I can conveniently store them away. Instead, they use long thin plastic and insert the entire film roll in there (see photos for example). I find this slightly inconvenient, as I will have to cut the film myself and put them in my own film sleeves. I can also tell that the scans are sloppily done. A lot of the scans are not positioned correctly, and I can often see the edges of other photos in the scans (see photos for example).
