I stopped by Gallup, NM in search of some delicious enchiladas for my dinner as a pit stop for my 2hr drive from Albuquerque. I decided on El Charritos, and it was my first time trying this establishment! I was greeted by warm and welcoming customer service, and I had the option of choosing my own seat. My waitress was extremely warm and vibrant! She laid complimentary chips and salsa out on the table (the salsa was the bee's knee's btw), and then proceeded to take my order!!! I ordered Christmas enchiladas (red and green chili), and I waited patiently as my stomach roared like a lion!!! The enchiladas came out, laden with red and green chili sauce, guacamole, rice, refried beans, and sour cream, my goodness!!!! I took the first bite and my head got to rolling and my eyes were lit up! These enchiladas were pure paradise! Let's just say that this plate looked like it was fresh out of the dish washer after I was finished with it! This place doesn't look like much from the outside, but the staff are so friendly and fun that it makes up for a lot. The food was outstanding. We had birria tacos and I have never had better ones. Wow! I'm come through Gallup when visiting family, and always looking for a good spot to eat. Well do not hesitate to stop here at El Charritos! The food was excellent! The taste, flavors with the right amount of spice. Had the Mexican combo1, enchilada, tamale, taco with rice and beans and guacamole, topped with green chili! Passing through Gallup we were craving Mexican food so we stopped off at El Charrrito. We were served right away and service was great. My husband had the steak burrito which was delicious and I had the stuffed sopapilla which I would rate 7; didn't have a lot of flavor but was very filling. TACO fan! Their taco dinner was the best I've had in GLP. Added some sour cream and poured on some hot sauce and it was shear heaven. I ordered the hard-shelled taco plate and it was huge. Disgusting, I oredered a pancake and sausage and it tastes so gross, like it was heated up and served it to me. The pancakes tasted like fish and the sausage tasted like it was heated up. My husband came to here because we were celebrating our anniversary and there wasn't much else to choose from so we settled. By far some of the worst food we've eaten. The chips were stale and the salsa was bland. His tamale plate was cold in the middle and he just ate around it. I ordered the cheese enchiladas well my plate came out piping hot and my beans looked like they were so crispy around the edges which means my food was microwaved absolutely disgusting. I don't think any of it was fresh tasted all reheated from who knows when. Then I look towards the kitchen and sure enough two microwaves sitting on the counter. I love this place! My wife and I stopped for breakfast on the way through Gallup, NM. The food was great: great taste, well prepared, good quality, home-style, and authentic (from my experience). The staff was warm and friendly and they made us feel very welcome. (Our waitress filled our big travel coffee mugs at no cost and also our water containers). I could just tell from the vibe of the place that the people there enjoy working there and that it is a community gem. (The Mexican radio in the kitchen, the cook singing and calling out, the local police eating breakfast, other travelers chatting with each other). Stopped by this restaurant because it was next to the hotel I was staying at and they give a 10% discount to hotel guests. I was greeted at the door by a friendly hostess and quickly offered a menu. This may be my new favorite Sunday brunch place in Gallup. To begin with, it's open on Sundays, which most local places aren't. BOTH the red and green are vegetarian, so two thumbs up. The red is better than the green. The hash browns are EXCELLENT. The beans have actual flavor and aren't gray. I was a little disappointed that the egg on top of my enchiladas was over easy instead of over medium, but otherwise, everything delicious. Looking for an alternative, husband and I saw many cars parked at El Charrito's, so figured we'd give it a try. Weren't disappointed in the least! Had a tasty bowl of menudo, chili rellenos, and a green chili burrito. Generous portions, and 'tho the decor is a bit tired, the servers were very friendly, and the place filled with locals.
