We have been coming to virgilio's for several years now and it never disappoints. we recently visited and found out that they remodeled the place with a new bar new seating and the place looks great. I just may have to proclaim this my favorite bar in Key West. The bf and I were wandering down Duval, kind of over the Sloppy Joe's/Irish Kevin's lame vibe/blah music, and we saw a sign for Virgilio's. I remembered having read something about it online, so I encouraged him to amble down the street and into the side entrance with me. We walked in to a dimly lit, intimate evening spot with a low-key speakeasy feel and good music. There were two bars, some tables and a sofa or two. The lighting and small space made it feel like we discovered an awesome secret spot a bit off the beaten path. As a girly girl, I loved that there were pictures of Audrey Hepburn everywhere, even on the coasters! We stopped in here every night on our trip (Sat-Wed) and were pleased to find live music from a different artist each time. Unlike some of the other spots in town, the artists changed nightly and all were very talented. Yeah, many played covers, but they took their own spin on the songs and had very unique vibes. On the first night the band reminded us of the Mommas and the Poppas; the next night the musician sounded remarkably like Elton John; one night the band was more hippie-inspired; and one night it was just a guy with a piano. Lots of different vibes, all very good. They also had an awesome drink list! Great music and a martini bar?! I'm so in! Can't remember the name, but I highly recommend the kahula-based martini that comes with a whipped cream float. So good! One of the nights we stopped in happened to be $5 Martini Monday. Even better! This night the joint was hopping with friendly locals. Another night we stopped in after the band had finished. Even though the staff was cleaning up and getting ready to close, they served us one round while they wrapped up. The service was great all week, especially considering most people were ordering complicated cocktails. This place was just awesome. Can't wait to return! read more

My husband had the special it was grouper and scallops with a lemon sauce and it was delicious .After a scrumptious caprese salad. Me I had the tortellini with morana which is smoked ham, cheese and fresh peas. It seemed as if the tortellini was homemade delivered with a delicious cream sauce Every bite was was mouthwatering awesomeness. Every time I go to Key West I end up finding a secluded spot I've never been to before. Located behind La Trattoria on Duval, Virgilio's Martini bar is my latest discovery. My friends only found out about this spot last time they were down since they ate at La Trattoria. Virgilio's is a great spot if you want to escape the madness of Duval. It's a cozy outdoor bar that plays live jazz. They also have some specialty Martinis available in addition to a full bar. There are several couches and other areas where you can get cozy with a loved one or hook up with someone on the down low. I wouldn't say it's a "secret" spot but passing by the entrance you wouldn't necessarily know that such a cool place is inside. I would definitely recommend this place if you are looking to catch your breath during a long night of partying on Duval, or to bring your hookup from Fat Tuesdays for a nightcap/insurance drink. read more

Virgilio's is one spot we always manage to pop into when we visit Key West. The have a fantastic late night menu, a really great bartending staff that doesn't make you feel like a tourist and always a great live house band. That is why we usually go, for the music. Great cocktails, strong and pretty decent prices. Off the beaten path than the typical stuff of Duval and many locals hang out there. It's a great mix of ages as well without the frat mentality or doucheness of Duval tourists. Recommend! read more

Last visit was Nov 2011, almost a year ago and has always been memorable! Our favorite place to hang out when there's a jazz group. After speaking with one of the local (monster guitarist) musicians, got the feeling that there'd been a recent change in management and that they were less interested in keeping this a Jazz venue than the previous owners were (being a spring break kinda town, and all). Hope that's not the case!! This was our second vacation on the rock, and 4th time at this fab martini bar! Restaurant, Bar, Zoo. That is what the sign says on the entrance of the building. I'm assuming they are talking about an evening's chain of events. Or that it is an indoor/outdoor bar, Tree Bar as the locals call it. The food is delish. If you haven't been to Virgilio's accompanying restaurant The Tratertoria, I highly recommend it for an old-school Italian restaurant dinner. Viriglio's serves a special "late late night" version of The Trateroria's menu. The pasta is fresh, the sauces are flavorful and salads are always a bit different according to the season. Yet, food isn't the main thing at Virgilio's. The martinis are. Their list is pretty extensive and they make something for everyone. I've had the a Mango Martini and a Chocolate Chip Martini. I don't recommend drinking more than 1 unless you want to be very, very drunk (hence the "Zoo" part of their sign). They always have live music later on in the evenings and the place gets jumping with all the local Key Westers. Mondays they have $5 martinis which is probably one of the most dangerous deals I've heard in a while considering the alcohol in those things. However, everyone knows Key West locals drink a tad more than the usual human being. read more

Also FYI: You have to go down the side/back of the building to get in, don't mistakingly go into La Trattoria like we did and think that you've arrived to Virgilio's. Either I ordered the wrong martini or the bartender made it wrong - the Martini Virgiiio was nasty, but my wife loved her martinis. Came here for martini Mondays, when all of their martinis are $5. Fairly intimate and quiet for being on Duvall, and we liked the low light ambiance. Seating was dicey but we lucked out and shared a table with a nice couple of transplants from Rochester, NY. The pear martini we were hoping for wasn't available, but the bartender duo turned out a chocolate 'tini that was smooth and not overly sweet. Would definitely come back for the martini deal and, though there are probably better spots for live music in the area, we highly recommend you stop by! read more

Last night was our first time coming to Virgilio's as it was recommended to me by a family member. It was ultimately the best Italian restaurant in Key West. Chuck was our server, with 20 years alone at Virgilios... we gladly accepted his classy recommendation from their exotic menu. My husband started off with a velvety Super Tuscan wine, We started off with the bruschetta with cucumber and stuffed mushrooms (which I am not one to usually eat mushrooms) but were blissfully flavorful... then moved to our main course of Cannelloni dela casa and the Lasagna alla bolognese. Awful just like last year. I'm in the industry, manage a bar and if I saw this in my bartenders I would as a manager fix the issue. I waited 15 minutes for my first drink and 25 for my second. The thing is my bar I have my bartenders wait not only on the bar but the tables, 30 inside and 26 outside that's 3 employees altogether. This is a great little bar that is a nice restaurant in the front, La Tratorria, and has a bar in the back with live music. We couldn't get a seat outside so we cam back to the nice part in the front. It's basically a martini bar. Lots of unique martinis. We had classic vodka martini, a berry martini, and a Ketel One straight up with three olives. Basic but great stuff. It's really the best bar in Key West for a more mellow evening, good people watching inside and on Duval out the window, and a cool atmosphere. If you want loud and crazy you have to go further down the main drag. Otherwise, this is your place. read more

I think the concept of the Martini Monday is really great and the band were brilliant... ...however, I don't like Martinis, so I went mainly because my boyfriend does and was told it was generally a fun night. Well when we got to the bar, I ordered a cocktail and for the reaction I got from the bartender, you would think that was illegal on a Monday. I asked three times for the cocktail as the bartender just kept staring at me and I thought she couldn't understand me, then finally she gave me the biggest look of disgust, I mean like I had just ordered a glass of her urine, and she said "um you know it's martini Monday right....?!" I told her I did, but didn't care as I didn't like Martinis. She then threw the martini menu at me and told me that I had never tried their Martinis so I didn't know what I was talking about... I told her I had tried many that they had in their menu and could I please just have a cocktail, she then went on to ignore me, told me she'd make me any martini and I did like Martinis, I just didn't know it... I'm sorry but good god, the drink I wanted was more expensive and I was happy to pay it- I know she wants to promote the night but I'm 25, I've tried plenty of Martinis in my time and I don't like them- you're a bartender just please make me what I asked for..... It really was a shame as it puts me off wanting to go there again. read more

We really struggled with the cigarette smoke. This is a smoking establishment. If not for the nasty air quality, we would have gone higher on stars. The bartender, his ability to make a drink not on the menu and the quality of service is what we loved about this place. We really kept seat hopping to get as far away as possible from the smoke, but found ourselves overwhelmed by the nicotine, so we called it (and left). Chuck our server was amazing! He was able to make nice wine recommendations for my wife and The Peach Kiss for myself and daughter. Well done Chuck! The place is clean and the wait service excellent, especially for Key West area. The food portions were generous and very flavourful. We had veal Marsala, fettuccini alfredo, spaghetti bolagnese as our main meal. Bruschetta and the bread for dipping were also fresh and full of flavour. two words....martini monday! virgillios serves the best martinis on the island. they have an impressive selection of liquor, and pip the bartendress behind the bar is just about my favorite person on earth. always polite, always a smile, always great company, and always an amazing accent. back to my first two words. you MUST experience a martini monday. they serve 5 dollar martinis, and have a local band playing almost all the way through the night. this used to be a permenant outing on mondays for me. The place is VERY small. the populatiry of virgillios has outgrown the capacity level. Interesting little bar behind a restaurant on Duval. I think the location and idea was great, but had a lot of issues with customer service and making the customer comfortable. I had the rudest waitress I've had in a long long time. I would have left without buying anything but I brought a few guests and didn't want to disappoint them. Furniture was very uncomfortable. Martini list was cool but there were no prices on the menu - a sign of a place that's trying to be more than what it is. No need to come here when you come to key west. read more

My husband and I went here the other night. Granted that it is spring break time, and we both look very young. I was disgusted by the service. Having worked in the industry for a number of years, I was thoroughly insulted by both the bartender and waiter just assuming that we were going to not have a high bill and/or tip well. After a hefty wait, we were seated and not even greeted for another ten minutes. Not once did he look either of us in the eye, and proceeded to leave our table without even waiting for us to finish our order! We were planning on buying a bottle of wine, apps/dessert, however, my husband and I couldn't even finish our first drinks because of the poor service, especially when he was spending so much time at the table directly to our left. Not once were we asked how our food was or if we wanted dessert, we were just given the check once our meal came out. I will never come here again, nor would I recommend this place to anyone. read more

Went there a few weeks ago with out of town friends I was embarrassed by the nasty, snappy bartender and poor service. She was short with us and when I asked when the band would return from their break she replied "Don't you think they deserve to take a break for a drink and cigarette?"
