We didn't really know where to start when we arrived, and there wasn't much direction, so we ended up just climbing the first rock formation we saw. Honestly, if it weren't for a group of people ahead of us, we probably wouldn't have had any idea where to go. I was hoping to make it to the arch, but the climb felt a little too steep and slippery, especially with kids. We were carrying our three-year-old and keeping a close eye on our six-year-old, who was feeling a bit more adventurous than we were comfortable with in that terrain. We didn't make it very far in and mostly just stopped to take a quick photo so we could say we visited. It was also pretty hot, with the sun beating down the whole time, which made it harder to explore and enjoy the park fully. That said, the park itself is really nice, and you can tell there's a lot to see if you're prepared and know where you're going. I'd recommend going earlier in the day, bringing plenty of water, and maybe looking up a map or trail guide ahead of time, especially if you're visiting with young kids. Overall, it's a cool place, but we didn't get to experience it as much as we had hoped. Definitely worth another try with better planning!

The first half of the trail was mostly flat with sand and lava rocks. The second half was a steady incline starting from the stairs. The end requires a little bit of rock scrambling to reach the cave. The views from inside and around the cave were spectacular. Utah residents ($15 entry fee) and non-residents ($20 entry fee). Decent sized parking lot to the left shortly after entering the state park. Trailhead and restrooms are located across the street from the parking lot. The views are amazing and there are plenty of parking areas to pull off to adventure hike or bike. The campground is about $35 per night depending on your camping needs (car/tent camping-fulk RV hookups) This facility has bathrooms and shower rooms as well as covered pick up tables for some of the full hookup sites. Weekends get busy so highly recommend booking online early.

When you exit from the freeway, park your vehicle in the parking lot. You can spend the day easily here! Taking a refreshing walk especially during the spring/winter or fall when the weather is cooler is ideal. Summertime temperatures are high and you can get heat stroke easily if you normally don't have experience with the desert conditions/temperatures. Down the river, there is a place where you can sign up for some water sports, like kayaking. I didn't do that yet but it is on my list. So I definitely return for just kayaking here!

Beautifully designed, thoughtfully maintained, and surprisingly affordable for the level of amenities. When you first pull in, you're greeted by a water feature and a large, gorgeous building that sets the tone. Inside is check-in (staff were super friendly and accommodating), as well as a mercantile open to both guests and locals. They serve coffee, have snacks, t-shirts, and small essentials -- a great little touch. Walk through that main building and you enter the guest community space, which is outstanding. There's a pool table, piano, movie-watching area, card tables, and even a huge kitchen for gatherings. In the back, there's a room with air hockey, ping pong, and pinball. The building also houses the laundry room, plus multiple guest bathrooms. Step outside and you'll find a barbecue and outdoor seating area for entertaining. The pool complex is resort-level. A zero-entry pool with a fountain cascading from the center, a very large (kidney-shaped) hot tub that's shaded in the afternoon, plenty of seating, and an outdoor shower and bathroom for convenience. The whole area is beautifully fenced and landscaped. Towels are even provided. The park itself has around 150 sites -- spacious, landscaped, and well thought-out. Some newer sections are still being finished, but what's completed shows the level of detail: plants, flowers, and green grass between sites. It feels open and inviting, not crammed in like so many other RV parks. Down at the lower end of the park is a gem -- a pond with a bridge, market lights, catch-and-release fishing, paddle boats, a kayak, and a walking path around it. At night, with the lights reflecting off the water, it's stunning. There's even a small dog park nearby for your pup to stretch out. Between the design, amenities, and the atmosphere, this resort is in a class of its own. We've stayed at plenty of "resorts" that charged more but offered half as much. This place is the real deal, and we loved every minute of it. We'll absolutely be back.

As you hike the wash, you pass by the…read moreCoyote Buttes North trailhead, aka The Wave, but don't be tempted to go if you don't have a permit! The rangers will catch you! To get to here, you will need to drive on House Rock Valley Road which is an unpaved road. I did it in a 2WD sedan, but made sure that the weather was dry so there was no mud. There's a large parking lot with a few composting toilets. You do need to pay for a permit - the trailhead allows you to use your credit card to pay and prints out a copy of the permit. Anyway, this is an awesome slot canyon! Follow the stream bed until you enter the canyon. It's a short canyon that leads to a petroglyph panel. There's a ladder section, but also an alternative trail if you have a dog or can't navigate the ladder. At the petroglyph panel, you can then explore the Buckskin Gulch narrows (the full Gulch is an overnight hike). I had to turn around at some point since there were huge puddles of water - some over knee deep that I didn't want to risk accidentally falling into when balancing on rocks. I would definitely visit again!!!

Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs is a designated wilderness area within the Vermillion Cliffs…read moreNational Monument, which straddles the border between Utah and Arizona and is approximately 40 miles East of Kanab, UT. This wilderness area wraps around the northern side of the monument and encompasses the Paria River canyon and other smaller, connected canyons. It is also the site of the famous landmark known as "The Wave," though that area (called 'Coyote Buttes North') is only accessible via permit; and such a permit can only obtained via a lottery system. But if, like us, you don't win that lottery, this beautiful area still has plenty to offer, namely: stunning slot canyon hiking. PCVC wilderness area is accessible via three trail-heads on two different roads off Hwy 89. We chose the Wire Pass trail-head off House Rock Road, which involved just over 20 miles of driving on a winding, sandy (and sometimes rutted) dirt road off the highway. (Note: this road is not passable after heavy rain). Our destination was the Paria River canyon itself, which can be reached from the the trail-head by passing through Wire Pass. Long story short, our hike was beautiful. Wire Pass itself narrowed from a wide 'wash' to a narrow slot canyon about 50 ft high, and we could feel the temperature drop about 10 degrees as we entered the latter. There was at least one semi-treacherous spot where a steep, blind climb-down over a large rock was required (I was glad to have long legs). The canyon opened up a bit at the confluence with Paria River canyon, before transforming again into a wider but much deeper slot canyon downstream. But due to the dangers of flooding in this narrow space, we ended up turning back before our planned turnaround point, since we sighted (and heard) some big thunderheads about 20 miles or so upstream. (We agreed not to die of stupidity). But we still had a great day. Other things you should know before visiting Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliff Wilderness: -- A permit is needed for backpacking overnight in Paria Canyon -- Don't think you can just sneak over to 'The Wave' without a permit. It is patrolled daily; and fines range from $1k to $10k. They've even been known to impound vehicles -- If hiking a long distance in Paria canyon, you will get wet; wading through some deep pools may be required (so bring water shoes and hiking poles) -- All poop must be packed out (You heard me) -- Local monsoon season is June - Sept; best avoided for flash flooding

This playground features a huge, well-maintained play structure with tons of space for running and exploring. Compared to other playgrounds, it is also well-shaded. There is also a smaller toddler play structure, although that one does get a lot more sun exposure. Beautiful grassy areas and tons of trees surround the playground. It is also next to a covered picnic table area. There is also a splash pad that we didn't get to see this time, but hopefully next time we will! I wish we could have come to this park more than once. But it was a little bit out of the way compared to the other places we visited. But it is definitely worth including on your list of St. George playgrounds!

However, we are lucky out here to have some amazing places to get off road and explore some really cool history. Gold Butte is one of these places and has a lot to see. From the old mine site and relics left behind, to some many different geological wonders... And do not be surprised is you run into some wild life or a group of cows grazing on the open range. Overnight camping is permitted and first come, first served with several locations along the paths to set up your site. All in all, if your into the over landing lifestyle, then Gold Butte will not disappoint
