The only thing I can say is ... don't go there! They ruined two dresses already! The first time, I thought I might not be careful enough to request dry clean, but the second time I did, and this is what happened to my dress. Its white collar got badly stained by the color from the dress. The first time was a black dress with some white stripes. The same thing, the white stripes became greyish. I chose to go there because their location was very convenient for me, and they open for longer hours. Their prices are always on the higher side, but I was willing to pay for it for the convenience. But not any more. It's too high a price to get my two favorite dresses ruined! read more

on my on time (!), i took my damaged shirt to Brooks Brothers, where they were (not surprisingly) rather upset that anyone would slander the quality of the product of a 200 year old company that prides itself on its product quality. they claimed that the stories Chris was telling about how "this happens most often with Brooks Brothers shirts" were patently untrue, and confirmed my observation that the damage was obviously precisely consistent with the end of a hanger of the sort that Virginia Cleaners uses. they became very interested in contacting Virginia Cleaners directly. (when the oldest men's clothier in the United States goes on the defense against a family-owned cleaners, i would be concerned if i were the cleaners!) it seems to me that it would have been better to keep a long-time customer and make good on damaging the shirt,... but that's just the way i run *my* business. read more

Used to be that you would walk in and the owner, a tall man with white hair, would be there and be just as likely as the counter staff to take your items and give you a slip. Turns out that a year or more ago, he sold the business. The new owner apparently installed "green equipment" and has never heard the term "customer service." According to one employee, many of the staff are actually the same people. The same people that used to know a little about customer service. That was the beginning of the end for me. The actual end came in July 2008 when I took a very delicate, hand-beaded, silk crepe wedding dress to be spot cleaned. They were all smiles and oohs and ahhs and said that the wedding dress cleaner person would be in to take a look next Tuesday and that they would give me a call then. I get a call, as expected, but what I didn't expect was this conversation: V Lady: The dress can be cleaned but you will have to come in and sign a notice that you agree to any damage to the dress. Me: Hmm, I don't think that I'm going to sign anything actually. V Lady: The dress is very delicate and it could be damaged, especially the train, from tumbling around in the machine. Me: MACHINE??!! V Lady: Yeah, the cleaning machine. Me: I was pretty clear when I came in last week that the dress had to be hand cleaned and that if you can't clean it that way, then I will take it somewhere else. V: I understand that you are stressed out about your wedding... Me: I am not stressed out about my wedding, I am stressed out about you RUINING MY DRESS. V: So what do you want to do? Me: Can I talk to the manager please? V: I am the manager. Me: Can I talk to the owner? V: She's not available. Me: I want to pick up my dress. I will be there before you close. V: Oh it already went out. Me: What do you mean out? V: The wedding dress cleaners have it now. And I'm supposed to call them back to authorize that they clean it. Me: OK. You need to get the dress back... and tell them NOT TO TOUCH IT. V: After tomorrow, they are on vacation for a month. So you can get the dress back in a month. Me: That's not gonna work. You need to call them and have them FEDEX the dress to you before they go on vacation. I cannot wait a month to get the dress back. V: If they FEDEX, you have to pay for it. Me: No, you will pay for it. V: Maybe we can pay half. Me: You will pay for it. and in my book, they're still paying for it. read more

I stopped going to Virginia Cleaners today. I started going when we got back from Oaxaca in 2005. I had a job in the city and it was relatively easy to swing by and park in front after having stopped at the Cheeseboard bakery for cherry corn scone and coffee. Most of the people who work here are very nice and customer-oriented. It's a bit different in the afternoon, but the morning is bustling and smooth. There are two main issues: 1) it is expensive, 2) they are very rough on clothes. Now, I can handle expense when it means that I'm taken care of. It's when I pay high prices to destroy my clothing that causes me some problems. Here is a list of the clothes that have been affected by Virginia Cleaners. 12 shirts - developed small, un-mendable holes in the sleeves. All in the same spot. 1 shirt - bleach washed out color in collar. 2 linen shirts - roughed up to the point of holes forming in the collar. I just went a couple of rounds with the management over the 12 shirts with holes. It's a bit awkward since the holes are small, but the fact is they are going to grow; several already have. The bottom line is that I came up with a value for replacement and was told over the phone that I could get the full value I requested if they were to keep the shirts, or I could get half back and keep the shirts. Since I truly felt the shirts were trashed, I said, "Okay, send me the money and keep the shirts." They agreed. That was a week ago. Today I get a response to the letter I sent with a new determination of the value--no mention of the original agreement we had on the phone--that was about half. This new value came after a round of "research". Well, I hadn't had any coffee yet when I got the letter. It nearly burst into flame in my hand. So I went to see the owner/manager(?). Short version is that I was able to sneak in an espresso at Guerilla Cafe first. That was good for all concerned. The best offer I could get at the counter was even less than they offered in the letter. He really wanted to give me back those shirts! (Full disclosure: the shirts were cleaned for free.) And then he pressed me to keep coming back. I had been poring over Yelp for some time to find an alternative. I ended up at Sam's down the street before getting another espresso at Peet's on Shattuck. Virginia Cleaners Summary: too expensive. Too rough on clothes. Not easy to get replacements for things that are destroyed (in degrees). Nice staff (very nice) and the manager was a decent guy. I can't trust this place to return my clothes to me safely. read more
