Went here since we were in the area and I'm a big fan of visiting distilleries/breweries, etc. Had no idea what to expect. I have seen the bottles of this distillery in the local ABC stores but that was about it. I have to say, the ladies behind the bar were uh-maze-ing. Seriously well-versed in the history of the distillery and they immediately made me a fan of this place. Like.. a big fan... we spent almost $300 fan between swag and alcohol. The ladies here also gave us some awesome recommendations for places to visit in the area. We visited most of them and it made our trip in this area improve 100%. Full disclosure, I am not a whisky fan - my husband is - and this was a stop for his birthday. Regardless, the tasting room was clean, well appointed and super comfy by the fire as it was a bit of a dreary day. The Staff were attentive, informative and helped my husband select a tasting set as well as two other tastings based on his tastes. They also made me a soda-forwaed whisky cocktail that I rather enjoyed The grounds are beautiful as well as the views, and they have a full tour if you want a bit of the history of distilling and if you want to see how it is all made. We didn't do the tour since it does come with a tasting and that wouldn't have been for me however - an hour tour and 4 1/2 Oz pours for $35 is a pretty good price and the group who had just finished up seemed to really enjoy it. They only run at set times though (2 and 3:30 pm at the time of this review, so reserve/plan ahead). Also - they can only do a total of 3oz per person - that's VA state law, so just be aware that there is a limit to the tastings. I had to go back. Just had to. The bourbon is soso, but the people that work here, the specualty drinks aling with the fantabulous seating area are really a must see. I got the flight...just to remind my palate and I got the specialty drink. Now....there is NO REASON why a specialty drink should cost $20. None. It was a standard sized drink....with maybe 2oz of alcohol. An old fashioned to boot! With meh bourbon!! Thankfully I had been slightly buzzed from the wine tasting I'd done or words would have been said. The bad was starting to tune up when I took my drink outside and then stopped and came i side to get refreshments. Shame that..from what I heard they were pretty good. Oh well. I visited Virginia Distillery Company on a Saturday afternoon. What a great facility! The tasting room is second-to-none! It's well-apportioned, comfortable, and roomy. I was greeted instantly when I walked in. I did a tasting of the Whiskey that Virginia Distillery Company produces, which consisted of four varieties. So good! The bartended took his time explaining each one, despite the fact that there were a couple other couples doing the same thing at the same time. The quality is awesome. I ended up buying a bottle to take home! The turn off to the distillery is a little hard to find. You'll miss it if you aren't paying attention. Great tour with very knowledgeable staff! The liquor is unique and reminiscent of a scotch due to its Scotland distilling methods (at least I THINK that's how it was explained!) I learned a lot about the history of distilling in both Europe and America. The entire facility is very classy and professional. It's a place that you'd feel like you could sit for a while chatting and drinking. ABC laws limit you to 3oz a customer, so you can only have two cocktails, but it's still a fun experience. They have a few small snacks you can buy, but with liquor laws, it's not a place you can hang for hours. read more

Nice distillery with fun cocktails. Unlike most distilleries in the area, there is only 1 whiskey, Malt whiskey to taste, with a small sampler of 1/2 ounce pour cocktails. I got the sampler (Spiked hot cocoa, Manhattan, Lavender Hot Toddy, and Cherry Punch). I enjoyed all of mini cocktails and the Cherry Punch was my favorite. The distillery is quite spacious with friendly service. If you are looking for more variety of cocktails with gin, malt whiskey, rye whiskey, bourbon, vodka, then I recommend heading over to Silverback Distillery. They have about 20 different cocktails to choose from. As VA Distillery is a bit more secluded and not as packed, I recommend coming here for a sampler. They also have nice outdoor views as well. read more

The drinks that we had were pretty good, and the staff was very friendly and chatty. Nice clean interior, with lots of different things that you could buy. But, staff was unsure about the tour. The museum downstairs, was part of the tour and we had to wait for the tour guide that she didn't know when they would be there. If you're looking to have a drink, relax and take in an awesome view, good place. Virginia Distillery Company is such a great find! A beautiful mountain backdrop location in Lovingston, Virginia. My fiancé and I arrived around noon on Sunday and were the first ones there. The staff at Virginia Distillery Company were incredibly gracious and welcoming! They were delighted to answer any questions, and offered the option of a tour. We jumped on it, and when they realized the tour wasn't for another hour and a half. They were able to squeeze one in prior to the arranged tour with us and other guests. Joan was our tour guide around the distillery and she was excellent! She is happy to answer any question, and if she's unsure, she's happy to find out. I had never been on whisky distillery tour, and I found it incredibly fascinating to learn it's history and how it's made. The tour is roughly 45 minutes or so, but it's well worth it! After the tour, my fiancé and I sat at the bar and had a flight of whiskey cocktails. Delicious! We ended up buying a small bottle of their whiskey and we're excited to try out their cocktails recipes that are posted online. Virginia Distillery Company is worth the visit! This distillery opens up like a post card. A winding road takes you right up to a private parking area. First impression was, "gosh this is a beautiful distillery...I hope the whiskey tastes just as good as it looks". I was greeted by Dave. He was warm, friendly, and honest. He offered me a dram tour and made sure each of my pours were worth having. You can really tell he enjoys what he does and loves the history of scotch. He made suggestions and even told me some things I didn't know about! There is a nice gift selection too. Make sure you pick up a book or two. One of the books mentions their whiskey in them :) There is no food sold on the property as most distillery's. But you can bring your own. Small parties are welcomed with no reservation but larger parties will need one. There is an outside patio that is gorgeous and comfortable. A fireplace pulls everyone together. There are tours available but I didn't get to go on one today since I was just driving by. I will return for more scotch :) Thank you for a great pour. read more

Do not show near closing. They posted closing at 5 and we showed up at 4:45 to buy a couple bottles for a family reunion but needed to taste them before deciding. They did not care and would not let us taste - they didn't have a problem letting us buy them though! Otherwise I like their product (which is why we drove 45 min out of out way) but the customer service will deter us from making the drive moving forward. read more

Beautiful tasting room! The tasting room staff were friendly and helpful and my tasting included the whiskey neat plus 3 mixed cocktails. My favorite was the mint julip. The distillery posts recipes on their website. I bought a bottle of whiskey and mixed up a mint julip using their recipe as soon as I arrived home. It was delicious! The distillery has a food truck that is present on some days. I plan to return on a food truck day, have a tasting, then some lunch (one tasting per day limit so no more whiskey with lunch). The wrap around porch is dotted with rocking chairs and ceiling fans guarantee a breeze, so a leisurely afternoon tasting seems a good idea. read more

As a gal that doesn't care for whiskey, I really loved this place. We got the seasonal sampler (for July) and it was so good, especially the julep zinger. My dad who hates mint loved our zingers. My parents have gotten tastings before in the winter when they had tastings like Irish coffee and other winter seasonals involving coffee and chocolate and loved them so I can't wait to go back in a few months. The three ladies at the bar were hilarious and so much fun so we had a fantastic tasting! It's also GORGEOUS on the back patio were there are a dozen tables and the stonework is so beautiful. An easy five star review and Shangri-La for whiskey lovers, Virginia Distillery Company will surprise you with its size, its elegance, and its fabulous spirits. Where the heck did this place come from? I must be really late to this game, as I didn't even hear about Virginia Distillery Company until my fiancee and I visited a few short weeks ago. It's located in, for all intents and purposes, the middle of the woods just off Route 29, 40 minutes south of Charlottesville. Turn off that road into the forest and emerge to the massive and beautiful whiskey making facilities and tasting room with plenty of parking. The inside of the tasting room is your grandfather's cigar smoking room, with big leather chairs, a fireplace, and a long inviting bar. Don't forget all the seating outside as well, with access to that bar through a retractable glass window. You can pick up all the merchandise you desire as well in the gift shop and book a tour while you're there. Admittedly, it's a little touristy, but how is the whiskey? Oh, it's easily some of the best in all of Virginia. Per (antiquated but probably for good reasons) VA ABC law, you're only allowed three ounces per day, so you can choose either a three tasting (.5 oz each) of either the whiskey or a mixed drink or a full cocktail (or I guess both and that's it). When we tasted there were six options to choose from, so bring a friend and you can try everything on the menu. Our bartender was fantastic and enthusiastic, giving us suggestions and trivia, and even little droppers to add some water to the whiskey so we can see the changes in taste. Best $10 we spent that trip. We started with their Commonwealth Collection whiskey, the Chardonnay Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whiskey. As the name suggests, the whiskey (which is brought over from Scotland and finished in VA) is finished in Chardonnay barrels, which gives the already smooth whiskey some complexity and fruit flavors, such as pear and apple and a hint of vanilla. After that, we were ready to try the flagship Port Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky, which goes for $65 a bottle and was extremely well reviewed. I'm not a whiskey guy nor know that much about it, but even my novice sensibilities understood that this was extremely well-crafted, flavorful, and rich whiskey. I love the idea of cask finishing the whiskey in wine barrels (from nearby King Family and Veritas Vineyards), and as a wine guy I can appreciate those additional flavors of toffee and raisins. The rest of the tasting were cocktails, with all recipes available on their website. The most interesting and maybe my favorite was the Highlander's Duel, which features the aforementioned whiskey mixed with coffee and orange juice. It shouldn't work but it really does, and why this isn't a staple of brunches along with bloody mary's and mimosas I will never know. So if there can be only one (cocktail), pick this one. Overall, I walked out of Virginia Distillery Company seriously contemplating starting to drink whiskey. They produce some interesting and high quality whiskey here, and the beautiful facilities just completes the experience and more than justifies the drive. A must visit for the area and really any area even remotely nearby. read more

OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE I ordered a couple bottles of single malt whisky. The shipper made a tracking mistake that made it appear my order had been mis-delivered. Almost immediately, the good folks at Virgina Distillery Co reached out to let me know they were already aware of the shipper's mistake and were on top of it. They followed up shortly thereafter to let me know my order was on it's way (and I got it the next day). I stopped here with the hubs while on a short weekend getaway to Wintergreen. This place is beautiful inside and out. I'm no whiskey drinker but my husband is and he very much liked the samples we tried. And I loved the hot chocolate cocktail, though it was a weee bit strong, but amazing flavor and bombastic whipped cream. Wow.  Nelson  County has great wineries, breweries hard cider makers and now a great whiskey distillery.   Our sample flight of 4 drinks was $10 and were amoung the best drinks I've ever had.  The single malt whiskey was superb.  We took home 2 bottles.   The friendly staff, brand new facilities, and delicious affordable food truck were all outstanding.  I think I'll go back again next weekend for another round of traditional whisky sours.
