Had a chance to visit this distillery. The area is pretty downtown, it is on the corner of a busy area but we were able to park in front and walk right in. The staff was very nice and accommodating. We had a larger party of 9. We were instantly greeted and given water without asking. We tried different flights. All of their liquor and mixed drinks had different flavors in it which I wasn't used to. For example some may have vanilla, pineapple, etc. When I have gone to distilleries typically you only get flavor from the barrels not like infusions. So I wasn't used to that. The customer service was great though and D was extremely patient with the party that I was with. read more

Covid Update - they are open! We tried Vitae spirits for the first time during a tasting at our local ABC store, and it has been some of our favorites since. Everything they make, they make well. We saw online that they now have tables open outside that are socially distanced and decided to check it out. The way that they are cleaning and keeping people separated is beyond impressive. The cocktails were amazing. And we were able to get some bottles that we haven't seen in the ABC, which was exciting. I would definitely recommend trying them out. During Covid they also offer cocktail boxes to go so you can make your own. read more

Very nice tasting, if a tad different from other distillery experiences. But definitely worth a retry. Vitae specializes in drinks made with molasses, which I found unusual but still enjoyed. Apparently it's something of a niche market in the distillery world, but I found it just as enjoyable as any other liquor. As is the law in VA, you can only have 3 ounces of liquor, served in tastings or mixed drinks. The setup looks like it's half oak and half bar. Which it is! The 'distillery' is in the back, but they serve you just like any regular bar would. They had snacks but no real food - although they were moving in that direction. But with Ace BBQ next door (they share patio space) you have great food options nearby anyway. I tried the "Platinum" rum, which I thought was full but not toasty. The Gold rum was also nice; light with some oak. The most unusual was the Orange liqueur, which I thought lived up to its name. I skipped the gin, since I'm just not a gin guy. read more

Nothing but great experiences at Vitae!!! Awesome owners and staff that are extremely knowledgeable in their field. We love visiting the modern/extremely clean distillery for their ever changing cocktail menu with interesting and very inventive drinks. I can't believe that I haven't left a review for Vitae already!! The family owned Vitae creates small batch spirits made from molasses. I was never a fan of Gin but Vitae quickly changed that. Vitae provides Gin, Rum, Coffee and Orange liqueurs with exciting and well balanced tastes. Giving Vitae a visit is something you should definitely do even if you think you don't enjoy Rum and Gin. Other reasons to visit would be Ian, the founder of Vitae. He is freaking awesome and definitely full of information...the PhD in microbiology should tell you something. From our conversations I get that Ian is a brewer, winemaker, foodie, cheesemaker and forager amongst other things. Ian's staff is also amazing, thanks for the convos and great cocktails TJ. Vitae focuses on authenticity/transparency and welcome customers to visit behind the scenes on tours. Pro tip: Check out the in house store for Vitae gear and cocktail making ingredients. read more

Absolutely delightful! Virginia had some funky laws about serving at a distillery- you can only have 3 oz served per person. That being said, I tried a tasting of three & one cocktail. The platinum rum is wonderful- flavorful & their base for most of their other spirits. The Orange liqueur was two different oranges & had a great flavor. I also tried the gin- very botanical blend rich with flavor. My cocktail was the Cantina Punch made with the gold rum (the most popular sold) and just a delightful fresh drink- perfect for a hot day like today! Very refreshing! We stumbled upon this distillery on an impromptu beer/wine hop! I'm so glad that fate led us here. The hospitality shown by the "pourer" was outstanding! Sometimes things can be pretty tense traveling into a new territory after dark, but the "pourer" made us feel right at home! The fresh clean establishment seemed to be eco-friendly and germ free. The view of their barrels allowed us to have a close-up of their liqour making process. We had the pleasure of sampling an array of drinks before making a purchase. Most of them were great! I'm a straight shooter type of girl, so I opted for the shots instead of the mixed drinks. My pals indulged in the mix drinks and they seemed to be very please. I would definitely take that 45min drive back to Charlottesville to visit again! read more

While vacationing in Va, we visited Vitae Spirits & Distillery. We were there the minute the doors opened -again, we were on vacation, haha. The gentleman there informed us of how the company began and was full of information. And then, all of a sudden, it went from only the 6 of us in our party, to being filled with guests, of which he handled extremely well. Another excellent addition to the Charlottesville micro-distillery scene, Vitae Spirits Distillery is making some tasty spirits. Charlottesville just keeps getting better and better with this explosion of micro-everything - wine first in the area, followed by microbreweries and now the micro-distilleries. Vitae Spirits distinguishes themselves from the competition by making a unique spin on some well known spirits. The clean modern tasting room is inviting and its proximity to Ace Biscuit & BBQ will make you wish Ace stayed open longer. What are the spirits they make here? A lot of the liquors use sugar cane molasses as the base spirit. Starting with the Anisette, a black licorice flavored liquor reminiscent of ouzo. Next is the Modern Gin, a dry gin with a rich juniper highlighted by that molasses base. Although I never described myself as a rum lover, the two rums they make here are some of my favorites I tried - the Platinum Rum with flavors of caramel and vanilla. On the other side of the coin is the Golden Rum - golden brown with oak and that molasses base, it's a warm and inviting spirit. If you're into something a little outside the box, give the Orange Liqueur a try, with unsurprisingly a large amount of orange zest and bright citrus flavors. Overall, Vitae Spirits Distillery is one groovy place to drink with lots of unique and rich flavors you're unlikely to find in the ABC store. read more

Stopped next door for some bbq on my wsy from Richmond to Roanoke. Someone mentioned the distillery and the tastings so decided to stop in. So glad I did. Yelp-bae and I stopped by here on a whim after Ace Biscuit and BBQ right as it opened- we had no idea it had opened up so we walked in and are the only visitors there. We're immediately greeted by the gentleman behind the bar and he strikes up a conversation with the bf about different liquors. He's extremely knowledgeable, especially considering we're alcohol noobs. Thuan is trying to get into hard liquors so the gentlemen's helping him out and giving him samples. We ended up getting a whole bottle of the golden rum and he showed us how we can find recipes for the Vitae cocktails online- super great guy! Very friendly staff. All you can smell when you get out of your vehicle is the amazing BBQ next door. They let us eat our food in vitae spirits while sampling yummy cocktails they offer.
