Update to address the response from Vision Care for Animals: I have to share my bad experiences just to WARN potential patients about this clinic: 1. Bad surgery outcome: Not sure what happened during the surgery, my dog Richie's right eye that was operated on has become blind! Likely caused by the surgery trauma. 2. Overcharging practice: I was told the surgery cost will cover 3 free post-ops visits, however, each visit I was charged $60 for tears-paper test, which is a very standard test for ophthalmologist visits. Richie's other ophthalmologists never charged me for this test! 3. Unauthorized appointment penalty: They automatically scheduled Richie for a 6-month follow-up appointment which I never signed up for, then charge me $190 for missing the appointment. 4. Unfriendly staff: when I called to dispute the missing appointment penalty, the staff was unfriendly. I explained I did not sign up for this and the reminder email said "Please confirm to keep this appointment", and of course I declined to confirm. The staff still insisted it's my fault and I should pay for it. Bottom line: Avoid this clinic. There are other better ophthalmologists. read more

My dog was referred to Dr. McCallum by VCA Holly Street for the management of KCS (dry eye). Our visits are usually very prompt and Dr. McCallum is incredibly sweet to my little buddy. The whole staff is always super kind and easy to work with even during COVID times. One time, Jasper had what I thought was an eye infection and it was -- but due to a thorn stuck in his eye. I was *amazed* at how quickly this was identified (it was not visible to the naked eye) and removed. I made a huge mistake and forgot to consult with Dr. McCallum when Jasper had another infection which resulted in him being incorrectly taken off of his eyedrops. Just a reminder to loop in all your care providers & see if they can provide insight around medication even if you're not able to get an appointment right away. Our dog has been under the care of Dr. McCallum and his staff since February and underwent double cataract surgery and we've had such a positive experience here. Nothing but good things to say about this place. We initially were very nervous about getting this surgery because its not cheap, but more importantly, our pup is a 10 year old, 4.5 pound Yorkie, and we didn't know if it made sense to put him through this surgery and 4 week recovery period. It was very scary to put him through it but we ultimately felt this doctor and his office were the safest bet we could take. We talked to other opthamologists before choosing Dr. McCallum, including the place in Belmont. We ultimately decided to move forward with him because he seemed to genuinely care about his patient outcomes and his office staff was extremely organized and communicative. After each visit I would receive prompt email followups with the instructions we discussed. There were instances post-surgery where we had questions after hours. The dr. made himself available over text for emergency and that really went a long way for us. In comparison, we took our dog for a consultation and vision exam at the Belmont opthamologist (different practice), and they were not helpful after the appointment. I took my dog here for a punctured cornea. I live in West San Jose and the local pet ophthalmologist was booked for the next month. VCA was highly recommended. They got me in right away. Their diagnosis was consistent with my normal vet and we were able to schedule the procedure within the next few days. I found the care to be excellent. The team, including the vet was very helpful and explained everything to us. I found the price to be reasonable given she had to have eye surgery. I am one who believes that you get what you pay for and I was completely satisfied with the service. No one wants to have surgery for their pet. No one wants to pay for vet bills. No one wants to drive 40 minutes away from their home. But in this case, it was all worth it. I hope to be a one time customer, but if asked where I would take my pets for eye injuries, it would be here. read more

From initial contact via phone call over a year ago, to recent prescription pick-ups, my dog (Max) and I have had nothing but great experiences here with an all-star staff! Some time ago, we had an emergency as my little dog developed a sudden, severe eye issue. The pressure he had was painful and he was in a bad way. I looked everywhere but this was during a time where other offices didn't have openings until months out. I was very lucky to have been referred here and we got an appointment ASAP! I don't know if I have met all staff members, but I've had the pleasure of interacting with Bryan, Elizabeth, and Tatyana on multiple occasions and have always had a positive, friendly, and helpful experience! My mom usually accompanies me on our visits with Max here, and they've also been so sweet with her, which I really appreciate. Continuing on: the service that Dr. McCallum gave Max is everything we could have ever hoped for! I was really scared during the initial consultation and the days leading up/surgery day since my little buddy has never had a big procedure like this, but he was very well taken care of. His glaucoma was fixed up (new lens and everything) and ever since then, Max has returned to his usual peppy self! I also appreciated that Dr. McCallum not only called us after the surgery but also took the time out of his very busy day to come outside and meet us and talk to us in some detail about how Max's surgery went/aftercare. It will be two years in August since his surgery and all has been well with my rambunctious grouch and I couldn't be happier :) The kind people here mean the world to me and I truly cannot thank them enough for all they have done for our little. The drops seem to have done their job, so I think the care and treatment was quality, but dropping over $1000 for a total of 15 minutes w/ the vet felt predatory. This is the worst vet ever, please avoid at all cost. First of all they ask for a credit card upfront to make appt. and that should have been a red flag. I didn't think anything of it and made the appt. for my dog. Unfortunately on the day of the appt. I went to the wrong location. when I spoke to the technician I apologized for the mistake and she said no worries. At the time I asked her if I can drive to the office immediately and she told me don't come because I won't be seen. So I said please make me new appt. which she said only with the condition that I would need to prepay first and then she would make the appt and also put me on the waitlist. She said she will send me a copy of the prepay invoice and I need to click on the link to pay it. She also mentioned if it is not paid by tomorrow the appt would be cancelled in their system. The next day I got a follow up call from the receptionist. I asked her to please cancel the appt because I am taking my dog to my regular vet and i would call back and make another appt if it is needed. I apologized again for the mix-up and she said everything is fine but reminded me I will need to prepay if I plan to make a future appt. I was thinking okay, sure I guess I am on the blacklist and I can't be trusted because of this. I thought okay since I made a mistake I will prepay when I make a future appt..So the call ended and I thanked her for her help and apologized again and she graciously accepted. I thought All good right? Well NOT GOOD, 2 days later I received a notification from my bank they put through $350 on my credit card for the prepay invoice. When I called the office and spoke to the receptionist she basically changed the story from the prepay to a cancellation and missed appt fee. I asked her why did it changed but she kept reading off some lame blurp about their policy over and over. The $350 was the prepay invoice but since I decided not to proceed with the appt, they decided to switch it to a cancellation fee and charge my credit card without my approval or consent. WOW how unethical is it to switch just like that? They are dishonest please stay away! read more

I am writing this review in my opinion of this business. I took my pet to have a exam on her eyes because they had been watery and I had no clue what was going on. From the get go of arriving at this place the staff were very unprofessional of giving out directions to what a must do in filling out paper work and also in handling my pet. What I thought and was explain to me that n extensive exam would happen and it would take about an hour. The extensive exam took 15 minutes. when my pet was brought back to me of course I had questions to ask. They told me the vet would call me. It wasn't till the next day that I got call. The time that I had to wait made me nervous and not to mention how it exasperated my anxiety. The staff was so rude and unprofessional as well as the vet. I do not recommend this business if your animal means that much to you like mine does. read more

I had the worst experience possible. I recently moved from nyc, and she got exactly same eye intervention there, the all surgery was 1:30 hours ( during covid, and I was waiting outside). When we moved to California, we have to make exactly the same surgery again (this time right eye). My dog was for 9 hours inside this clinic, but 8 hours fasting inside a small cage. My dog is very sensitive , and that was completely unacceptable, with any kind of puppy. I have to call at least 3 times for updates , and she was waiting all this long hours just for the vet see her , fasting and with pain. This same surgery in a eye hospital institution in NYC , cost me about $700 and they were extremely professional and fast, but in vision care animals cost me $1600. Detail was few days after I came to pick up an eye drop for my beloved puppy and I didn't know that I have to pay extra $46 for that, And I was without my wallet, so they denied to give me the medication ( I suggested I could pay by phone in 5 minutes). No love with our beloved puppies, it's all about money $. I never will bring my dog here again read more

My diabetic dog went blind last year due to diabetic cataracts. She is now over a year out from surgery, can see and is back to her happy self. On top of all that, the staff has been super supportive and helpful throughout this whole journey. During her post-op period, her eyes kept getting irritated and would start to look awful. I would send a picture and would get a quick response on whether I needed to bring her in or if I needed to change her treatment plan. The cat had a thorn lodge in the top of his eye; i get it, not a small task and I don't expect to not pay, but this vet tried to charge me: $4700 to take the thorn out. I was given a list of about 5 dozen different charges of BS (one charge; they wanted to culture the thorn for $400 LOL). They gladly offer financing. I went to Aptos and that vet did it for $2500 and couldn't believe all the senseless charges from Vision Care. The employee that helped me was very nice and pleasant, but I like knowing the person/business I'm supporting isn't gouging ppl for money and trying to take advantage of ignorance. If you don't care about spending hundreds or thousands (in my case!) extra, then this business was nice and they'll help. Just kinda shady. read more

When my vet suggested a specialist when she was unable to treat my cat's eye infection, I panicked thinking it would be expensive and it put me out of my Adobe comfort zone. However, Dr. McCallum was able to pinpoint the cause of my cat's infection almost immediately. He left us in the room briefly after he swabbed my cat's eye to look at the sample, himself, under the microscope. I was expecting a lab assistant and a wait, but no, it's all done by Dr. McCallum. Overall, the visit was not anymore expensive than an Adobe visit. When I expressed concern over my other cat having the infection, he offered for me to bring her in on my eye infection cat's follow up appointment. So, I did and he reduced her exam fee without a request from me to do so. My cat's eye infection cleared under Dr. McCallum's treatment and he's had no problems since. All three of us are happy to have Dr. McCallum for any future cat eye needs. read more

I wish I could give them zero stars. They should be ashamed of themselves and the condition they were going to leave my cat in should be criminal. I recommended them to a friend of mine and if you're not a continuously ongoing client or brand-new they don't seem to have time for you. In fact the girl that talks to you on the phone said they reserve time for new clients and that it's a longer appointment! I've tried on a couple of different occasions to get an appointment and couldn't without being put on call. I will never ever EVER go to them again or recommend them! I left them a couple of messages over several days recently with no callback. The third call I made the usual girl answered and said yes they got my voicemails but haven't discussed it with the doctor yet? And he's in surgery and who knows how long that will be. Then she called me back to say she discussed it with him and I can be put on call for Wednesdays and Sundays with about an hours notice -"does that work for you?" &@$! No? So I asked when could I get an actual appointment and I was told August 13th!! Are you effing kidding me??!!!! Almost a month? What is wrong with these people?! My cat has a VERY serious eye issue (COLLAPSING/DRAINING)!!!! and they want me to be on call? Literally critical and they had a description and all the information to show that that's what was going on. I didn't know that but they had to have. That's why my cats eye looked like it had crumpled cellophane on top and watering which I told them in all 3 messages -Niw I know it was deflating! And they didn't care!! And she said on call/ or about a month AFTER she discussed it with Dr. McC!!! I was so angry I hung up and I went to the place in San Carlos. I got the female specialist there this time and like her. At least they have more than one doctor also! There are very few- actually three counting Fremont- eye specialists for pets. They got me in in a couple of days and apologized that was the soonest. It turns out YES my cats eye is collapsing from an ulcer and very painful! He has a ton of other things going on and now adding this in I have to euthanize him! Way before they ever would've even given me an appointment! They did nothing about it and did not consider it serious. Run!!! read more

Parsley had a lower eye lid entropion surgery and both he and I are so so happy with the result. My beautiful boy is no longer constantly winking at me and I can tell he feels much better. Although it's curbside only I could see by Parsley's relaxed behavior when he got back in the car after each visit that he was treated very sweetly by Dr. McCallum and his staff. All of my questions/concerns were addressed quickly and I was able to send pictures of Parsley's healing progress along the way and was always reassured that everything looked great! I checked with several other specialists and they were booked weeks out and required deposits for just the initial consultation so I'm so glad I found this place. Words can't express how grateful I was to find Dr. Patrick McCallum at Vision Care for Animals. My Maltese has chronic dry eye syndrome and the last ophthalmologist said she was a ticking time bomb with her loosing her vision.
