I gave this optometry small business a couple of chances. First off, the eye exam with Dr. Jang was fine. My prescription for both glasses and contact lenses are clear, and the Optometrist was professional and patient. No problems. However, when it comes to actually getting glasses, I was less than satisfied with the service and quality. I purchased a pair of sunglasses (frame and lenses) from Vision Designs Optometry and found the lenses to be extremely poor quality compared to lenses made with the same prescription from another business. I paid a fee for hi-index lenses because of the magnitude of my prescription, and expected the lenses be thinner and lighter. It was the complete opposite. Additionally, the lenses made me dizzy even after wearing them for a couple of weeks. I brought this up with Sylvia, the optician, and was met with a dismissive attitude. When I asked if she could check if I indeed received the hi-index lenses, her response was, even before looking, "You did because I entered the order." Sylvia started blaming the thickness of the lenses on the large frame, which I confirmed with 3 other opticians that it made not sense. She then agreed to re-make the lenses and shave off some of the thickness. One week later, I got a call that my new lenses were ready (note the first order took about 2 weeks). When I tried on the new lenses, I did not see a difference in the thickness of the lenses, but rather noticed that all they did was mount the lenses forward in the frame. When I tried them on in the store, it was fine. However, after wearing them for about 20-30 minutes, I become dizzy again. I have completely given up on the pair and they are now just sitting in my drawer because I cannot wear them without feeling dizzy. I even question if the lenses were even re-made or if I just got the same lenses back. I really wanted to support this small business as it is in my community. However, between the poor customer service and quality I will be looking for a new optometry business when it is time for me to renew my prescription and get new glasses. read more

This place deserves nothing but a stellar review, and I will try best to do some justice to it. We were seen by Dr. Katie Jang. She is extremely thorough, knowledgeable, patient and very helpful. She explained everything in detail, right from the eye examination to choosing the right glasses. We felt confident. Her team is very polite, competent and cheerful. They do their best to help patients out with every little thing. Making appointments was so easy. Everyone was so very patient with a little toddler running around and wanting to explore their place, they were not even slightly disturbed or frustrated, and we loved that too. We felt very welcomed at their office. So very glad to have discovered this gem of a place in Long Beach. And the best part is that they are open 7 days a week! read more

I had an amazing experience with Dr. Mukai. She was super throrough and careful with my eye exam. I will ABSOLUTELY be coming back to her! She fixed my prescription and we found out one of my eyes actually got better / was misdiagnosed by my previous eye doctor. Dr. Mukai was incredibly friendly and kind. She was extremely flexible and attentive to my needs and worked with me on purchasing the amount of colored contacts that I wanted/needed. This was a super painless experience and she has great bedside manner, WAY more than Belmont Heights Optometry. Her staff was also so warm, friendly, and on top of everything! You can tell they work really hard, are smart, and work as a team. You can tell that Dr. Mukai has high standards for her staff and it pays off because I've never been to an optometrist with people who work so hard at the front desk. It's honestly extremely refreshing to see. Booking my appointment was so easy and stress free. I called about 20 places in the area and everyone was booked up until the end of the month. Dr. Mukai was able to see me at 5pm on a Monday which worked well with my work schedule since I work from home. I think it worked out super well and I'm really glad I came to Dr. Mukai. There's plenty of metered street parking out in front and it's very easy to find their offices. I highly recommend if you're looking for someone who will help you get the correct prescription and work with you on what you need/want, definetely give her a visit. I was having problems with contact lenses with my previous doctor until I met Dr. Jang, she helped guide me through what could be happening and provided solutions. She recommended new contact lenses to test out and see if the prescription and comfort are ok, I did follow up with her to fix some issues after testing and she's very helpful and I got a better experience in wearing contact lenses. I had an amazing experience with Dr. Mukai and her staff Angela. It was my first time doing a general eye exam and getting a near sighted prescription glasses. Dr. Mukai will take her time to assess you professionally. And her staff Angela has all the patience when choosing which frame works best for you. I also tried doing the dilation eye exam out of curiosity. I'm 27 y/o, no past medical history nor eye problems. But one thing they find out from the dilation eye exam is that I have a partial retinal tear that could potentially lead to retinal detachment and might lose my vision. I don't even have any symptoms of it. Within that same week I went to a retinal specialist whom Dr. Mukai referred me to and had a laser photo coagulation therapy to fix the tear. Not only they gave me good experience and prescription glasses, but they also save my eye. Overall best experience with her clinic!! Highly recommended! read more

I had a great experience with Dr. Jang. She was very patient and efficient. I always have some trepidation about going into the exam room because more than once the optometrist was irritated by me because I "kept changing my answer" when he/she asked me which was clearer. With Dr. Jang, I was happy that I was treated like a patient who really needed help with finding the correct prescription, not someone who was stupid or was lying. I was also able to order color contacts which were not available at Kaiser Optometry (where I was told they were not available only after I paid the exam fee). Cassandra the receptionist was very accommodating when I called last min to squeeze in an appointment before the end of the year to take advantage of my vision insurance. She and Dr. Mukai were understanding even when I called to apologize that I was running 10 min late due to work. I feel that they are happy to work with my schedule as long as I respect theirs. The office is very clean, and it's clear they take their COVID precautions seriously. They even took my temperature before letting me into the office, which made me feel safe. This optometrist is looking to get her money any which way she can. I went in and purchased contacts and lens in March. Spent well over $500. I tried to order colored contacts online, a brand I have worn for 10+ years, and this Dr will not approve the prescription with eyeconics. I've worn contacts for the past 15 years and have never had an optometrist limit me to what I want to order. She has patients sign a 90 day contact lens policy regarding the fitting of lens you purchase through her. But if you try to purchase lens beyond the 90 days, she will not approve and wants you to come in to be charged for a new fitting/exam! She tried to justify her decision with a story of a patient that ended up with a really bad eye infection but when I explained to her that these are not new lens to me, she tried to revert back to her 90day policy. I am not asking her for a new fitting, all I'm asking ifs for her to release my prescription so that I can purchase contacts as I see fit. I will be following up with my insurance and submitting a formal complaint. read more

Customer Service: Always a positive experience for the past 15 years. Easy to schedule appointments. Super smart and courteous staff with a warm vibe. A few months after I purchased two identical pairs of Ray-Bans, my toddler yanked off both (twice) while I was working from home. She also lied down on top of one of them in her crib. That pair was flat like a pancake. The other one was so destroyed that it didn't fit in the case. After she took them off from me she wanted to put them on her face but at her age she had little dexterity skills so she pulled the stems to the sides and then twisted one up and the other down, then folded. I wish I took a picture. I really liked the frame style so I wanted to at least save the lenses and use them for a new pair. They weren't sure whether they could fix them, especially the latter pair, but I left them with them anyway. About a week later they were like brand new. They made subtle adjustments in person (less than five minutes, after COVID check) and gave me a cloth bag for the pair that I hadn't brought a case for (because the glasses didn't fit at that time). They said it took them a long time to fix the frame and the nosepad area. I don't think I want to know how many hours they spent restoring them. I'm grateful that 1) I can wear my favorite glasses, 2) I didn't need to order a new pair and was not pressured to order a pair, and 3) they were super nice the whole time; they didn't scold my two year old culprit who cheerfully accompanied me to the pickup. Store merchandise: Excellent up-to-date collection of glasses and sunglasses. Something for everyone, from traditional to fashion forward, from basic to designer. I appreciate they have a discerning taste and only carry quality designs, unlike internet that has unlimited mediocre options and long unhelpful descriptions. You can take the time to try out many frames (they take COVID seriously and they clean every frame every time) and they leave you alone, or if you're lost like me, they help you pick the frame if you ask. I received excellent recommendations based on my appearance (face shape, face size, placement of your eyes relative to lens, height and hair color), lifestyle, insurance and budget. Next time you go in, they remember you and your preferences. Cassandra is a genius who knows all there is to know about eye related matters (my frame, frames I had tried on, reasons for choosing the frame I chose and not choosing the frames I didn't choose, add-ons like transitions and unbreakable whatever, the year/month I bought glasses/contacts, and how all that relates to my insurance) the moment she picks up the phone. I don't consider myself particularly fashionable but receive genuine compliments from acquaintances and total strangers every month, from both fashionable people and otherwise. On a different occasion, I casually mentioned contact lenses I had purchased from another place were making my eyes dry by late afternoon but the more mainstream brands didn't fit me because of my astigmatism. The owner/optometrist gave me samples of a different brand that cost the same, fit better and kept my eyes moist (after a quick, affordable exam). I ended up switching to that brand. read more

She got offended when I confronted her about rude behavior. Very hostile....I got the impression the girls in the office are used to these types of issues with her. Eye rolling . The glasses that I got there broke within a month. Cheap glasses and HORRIBLE customer service. If you are considering using this optometrist, don't. The bad reviews you see here are justified. I wish I could give them a zero. I was taught at a young age to not say anything if you have nothing to say. I have to speak out because many people use Yelp as a tool to help them make buying decisions. As a consumer, the worse thing for us to do is to keep silent when we receive bad service. We bought my son a pair of glasses. They gave us an eyeglasses case that was too small for the glasses. Worse of all the case was also cheap. The doctor told us that we were limited in our case selection because our glasses of the low price of glasses. We also did not get cleaner or wipes. As a result, we felt mistreated because we did not spend a lot for frames. We felt like second- classed citizens. We would have bought frames that are more expensive but they had a very limited selection. The doctor said that they do not care a large selection of designer frames because of the area that the office is located in. mmmmmmm. I am not going to accuse her of making a racist comment but that statement is so false. They need to work on their marketing because they are located near several high rises and not far several affluent areas. In closing, I read some good comments on this site. I wish my experience were a good as their experiences. I also want the owner to know that people in this area buy designer frames and most importantly write honest Yelp reviews. BTW. Great service and great frame selection. I always get complements on the frames I've purchased from here. Dr. Mukai always has a great frame collection, especially since I have a huge soft spot for Gucci's, which she always keeps a great selection of. Dr. Mukai and her staff do a really great job of explaining my benefits to me. I just got a new job this year, and with it came a whole new insurance plan. They really take the time to sit down and go over my insurance options, so I know what my insurance will pay for, and the different options I can get that will be covered under my insurance. Best part is that the doctor is really helpful. I'm mainly a contact lens wearer, have been for years. I wanted to try a different brand of lenses a couple years back, mainly to save money on lenses. They fit well at first, but after a while, I just couldn't stand them and wanted to go back to my old brand. Old habits die hard right? Unfortunately, I was all out of my old contacts. I called the office, and they were willing to take me in that same day, fit me for lenses from my old brand, and I got a trial pair as I waited for my order to come in. read more

So far so good. I have only been there a couple of times but everything was easy and painless. No trouble with insurance or appointments. I thought the doctor and the receptionist were both professional and friendly. Not pushy like some places. The thing about the doctor that people might not be used to is she seems a little on the shy side. So to some people that might come across as standoffish or know it all. But its really kind of cute, she giggle a lot. Just talk to here and she will open up. It's a nice break from all my other doctors that don't listen at all and don't have time for you. I felt really comfortable going there. The only negative I would say is that I have seen more medical equipment in other offices. I'm surprised that this place doesn't have a higher rating. I've been coming here for a few years and never had any issues. Dr. Mukai has always been nice and friendly, and I've only had good experiences here. She is a little on the quiet side, but friendly if you chat with her during the exam. I take forever to make decisions about things, and she and her staff had no problem letting me take my time looking at and trying on several glasses frames after my exam. The receptionist/assistant that was helping me with the frame selection took the time to show me some of their latest frames, and what was popular. When I decided to try contacts for the first time, Dr. Mukai was totally helpful in selecting the type to order. They were also patient with me when it took FOREVER for me to get the contacts in and out of my eyes! The store itself is kind of on the small side, but they offer a selection of designer frames, as well as more reasonable selections. In addition to getting my prescription glasses and contacts here, I also picked up a cute pair of Fendi sunglasses at a good price. My glasses and contact orders were always ready by the day they said they would be, and they send out reminder cards to schedule your next eye exam. I have gone to so many optometrists and NEVER have I had an experience like this. She is so condescending and unprofessional. She needs to go back to school and learn communication skills because she couldn't communicate or read a rock if she tried. I feel sorry for her secretary because she would just cower under the embarrassment she felt from hearing this optometrist speak to us. I went in for contacts and she was appalled because I wasn't wearing them. I then told her that I'm near sighted and I only use my glasses if needed but would like to buy contacts for when I go out. She then just stared blankly at me for 3 minutes with a creepy expression and proceeded with the appointment. The eye exam was so uncomfortable. She makes you question your answers and continuously pushes certain contact lens brands. I told her I wanted to continue the acuvue oasys since I have used them for years and she insisted that I try the daily lens biosync. I politely said I was used to the weekly contacts and she continued insisting that daily contacts were better. She then proceeded to say that her teenage daughter agreed that daily contacts were better and were simple to use. She kept explaining and explaining how daily contacts work as if she were speaking to an imbecile. I am an educated adult and I made it CLEAR that I understand how daily contacts work. I can't believe I had to explain myself more than once. At the end she even had the audacity to say that "Americans just don't like throwing anything away", as if that was a reason to continue her ongoing rant about daily contacts. That was such an ignorant and disgusting comment given the fact that she's living here in America and raising her children here to make herself seem as if she's not part of this country. That to me is top level narcissism. I got so tired of her pushing the daily contacts that I just took a sample of the contacts, paid for my exam and left. A few days later I called to obtain my prescription and she continued being rude, EVEN over the phone! She even took the time out of her day to make a comment that she couldn't understand me over the phone because of my voice! Please save yourself the time, money and brain cells and go somewhere else. You will thank me later. I rather pay DOUBLE the price than go back to her business. That in itself, speaks volumes. I can't wait to read what excuse she has for her toxic behavior. read more

First let me say that Dr. Mukai is very knowledgeable about her profession. However she does not know how to develop good rapport with her clients. I cannot post this review without a rating. I would give this place ZERO stars if possible. I spent 15 minutes shy of TWO HOURS in her office. I went in for glasses and somehow found myself paying for glasses and contacts. (that's fine.) My bill was around $300. Mind you, I would have been more than happy to spend my hard earned money at her office, if the customer service was informative and simply respectful. I'll start with her condescending tone during the eye exam!!! She was so impatient with me! Serious attitude when I was taking the eye exam. It seemed as though she thought I was lying about my answers. She became VERY IMPATIENT and continued with a snarky tone. Lol I asked when I would be receiving my glasses, she said she was unsure and said it could take a few weeks. She said that the lab in Sacramento was backed up. Understandable. She told me "a few weeks or so." "I don't know." "We'll give you a call" "the glasses will come in before the contacts" --15 mins later she says "actually the contacts will get here first but I don't know." What. I was very uncomfortable about spending that much money on her business after such vague answers. I understand that she has no control of what the lab has in stock or not. A simple explanation would have great. She spoke to me as if I didn't trust her. It's not that I did not trust her. I just wanted to make an informed consumer decision before making a large purchase. I wanted to weigh my options and see if I could get my glasses quicker elsewhere. She insisted that I would hear the same thing from other eye care businesses because of my insurance plan. She was not happy when I asked if I could just get the prescription and look else where. I also did not appreciate how she suggested that my indecisiveness had to do with money issues. I paid the $300+ bill and walked away like I had just left the twilight zone. I was appalled and in disbelief of what I had just experienced. I walked home and called them back for a refund. They voided my payment and I paid only for the copay. That was the best part of my experience at that business. Save yourself the trouble and go to Brinley & Morad down the street. I did. And I was MORE THAN HAPPY to pay just under $400 for their services. Even if I still have to wait a week or so for my glasses to come, I left that place a happy customer because of the service I received. After reading her yelp responses to previous unhappy patients, I wonder how seriously she takes her oath of confidentiality. I know my rights and under the First Amendment I am protected. However, I am curious to see what her response will be. Again, I am not knocking her knowledge as an optometrist. Been coming here forever every year I treat myself to new frames. They have designer lenses and trendy sunglasses. It's within close walking distance to home and I don't need to bother driving after I get my eyes dilated. I like Dr. Mukai better than that other place on 1st/Long Beach Blvd. That eye doctor man was not good at all. I've received excellent customer service and honest feedback about my eyes. My insurance is pretty good so I have no complaints about spoiling myself with expensive stuff. No kids either, so I can afford it. I've had it with this lady. I've been going to this optometrist office for at least 7-8 years. People who experience Dr. Mukai for the 1st time may get the impression of expertise and professionalism. I did - one of the reason's why I went back. However, over time you will realize this doctor doesn't value customer service and doesn't value her patients - at least that is what I experienced recently. On many occasions, she was rude and came across as distrusting. I kept going back though overlooking her odd behavior as her office is at a convenient location for me. I spent hundreds of dollars buying glasses from her and she practically looked at me like I was insane the other day when I asked her to repair faulty lenses from a pair of expensive glasses I bought from her. She apparently thought I damaged my glasses when I hadn't. Furthermore, I recently changed careers and the vision insurance with my previous job apparently ended, which I had not been notified about. When I entered the shop recently to get my annual eye exam the other day - she didn't even say hello and just blurred out - "we tried to reach you, your insurance is no longer valid." LOL. She treated me as if I couldn't pay out-of-pocket for my exam and new glasses, which is not the case at all. I certainly can afford it and more - in fact, I always paid more than my insurance allotted for glasses - hundred's more. So, if you want to be treated with utter disrespect by this "professional" optometrist - all the power to you. I won't be going back no matter how convenient Dr. Mukai's location is for me. Also, she seems to turn over assistants quite often too - something I noticed quite sometime ago, but ignored. Now perhaps another sign she might be a little off. read more

I had a horrible experience with this lady! The first time I saw the "doctor" she took over 2 hours to do a simple eyeglasses/contacts exam and during the whole thing she was very weird and stand-offish. What really bothered me is when I asked her to show me some of the letters again (you know the whole "which one looks better, this one or that one") she actually had the nerve to get mad/frustrated with me! She also almost refused to prescribe a certain brand of contacts that I've been wearing for over 10 years simply because they were "too expensive" and told me that I "couldn't afford them." During the whole eye exam she seemed very unsure of herself which is why it took so damn long. Then after that long and awkward exam she and her assistant tried to make me buy all these extra and expensive add ons to the glasses. I felt so uncomfortable the whole time that I ended up leaving without ordering anything. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS! read more
