My selected seat had some leftover popcorn and the floor in front of my seat was not very clean. It was a weekend visit and there were many people watching movies but the bathrooms were not very clean and had overflowing trash. The good part was that the movie we watched was good.

I arrived an hour before Dune to be sure to get in line and get a seat. As I was entering, the fire alarm went off and people were ushered out and away from the building. An hour later we were let back in even while the strobe lights were still going off. We were given "updates" (no new info really) periodically and even mildly entertained by a genial staff member who offered some jelly bean trivia. An hour in we were told the movie was being cancelled and we would get free tickets to return. I want to commend the audience for staying chill throughout and as far as I could see not getting upset or outwardly annoyed. Disappointed yes, antagonistic, no. But most of all I want to commend the staff for the way they handled the matter. To a person they were pleasant, calm, apologetic and courteous. They seem to be a well coordinated and cohesive group, which is not something one often sees in movie theaters. Three cheers to the Jordan's Reading IMAX crew! -----Update: I returned later that day and was able to see Dune, which was awesome. There is nothing like this theater, with it's floor to ceiling screen, surroundsound and "buttkickers" (vibrations in your seat when appropriate). There were about 7 tickets of 500 left when I got mine so I was advised to get there an hour early, which I did. There were already about 75 people in line. We were let in about 20 minutes before the show was scheduled to start and I had no trouble getting my preferred seat near the top and center, but I would NOT have wanted to be near the end of the line. I think sitting at the end of a row would take some getting used to but be manageable, but I can't imagine anywhere in the first 5 rows would be enjoyable. Takeaway: get there early people!!

It was easy to buy reserved recliner seats for our movie and get them scanned to get in the theater. They have multiple attendants at the concession stand so it was quick to get our movie snacks. They have popcorn, candy, chocolate, hotdogs, nachos, pizza, soda, and icees. Recliner seats are no frills but comfortable. Lastly, bathrooms were clean and there is plenty of parking. The worker then goes on to be extremely rude about the whole situation and implied that me and my friends (teen girls) were spending our "daddy's" money and not ours, while refunding us. Another thing is we ran into family friends and started talking to them while waiting for a refund, then the worker went on to say "that we were trying to find a random adult to sneak in" and again gave us a very disrespectful tone and choice of words. The lobby was very clean, bright and open. It included a bar and an arcade as well as some seating for those who were waiting for their movies. The snack selection was good, they were out of pretzels when we were there but got pop corn and one of the special character sodas. They also had gourmet popcorn, Cheeto and Oreo flavored. The seats were comfortable and reclined, the theaters had plenty of space so you aren't climbing over each other to get in and out of the rows. Additionally bathrooms were right near the theaters so running to the bathroom mid movie.

The theater is beautiful and even the lobby and restrooms are unique. All of the staff was helpful and friendly as well. It holds about 900 people, so I imagine it'd be great for a concert as well. I sat 10th row, center and had a perfect view of the screen. The sound was solid as well, but don't expect IMAX or anything like that. I'm glad I popped in. I don't know if I'll ever be in Portsmouth again but if I am, I'd happily stop in again for a show or film.

It was so gross and distracting. Why would they let a theater be this gross when it's hard enough to get people into the theater to begin with? Very bad. Expensive and shameful.

So it was exciting to have a recent and currently rare chance to return to the venue for the first time in at least 10 years, if not more. I do follow their social media programming in the interim and am pleased that the cinema has managed to soldier on through the more challenging recent years. The triplex layout was exactly the same as I remember, though it was a surprise that the bathrooms did not seem to have been updated. The more personal, less chain-like touch is evident throughout the space with handwritten film titles and a general welcome to linger vibe. The film I saw featured in the "screening room" which I had not visited before. Seating was OK with the look up at a slightly sharper angle than I would have liked. Sound and picture quality was excellent. The trailers before the film were individually cultivated (a welcome additional more "personal" touch) and highlighted upcoming one-off programming the cinema will be offering. Keep going strong, Cinema Salem!
