Myers) and terrible care at The Terraces (Bonita Springs) before my sister and I made the difficult decision to admit our mother to Avow Hospice in Naples. Thank god someone told us that Avow had just started admitting patients from Lee Country, and thank God a bed was available. Mom was quite suddenly at the end of her life, and we were unprepared to set up proper home care. Mom said she was glad when she arrived at Avow, and the next day she told us she felt the nurses cared about her. Thank you, Avow, for making Mom--and our family--feel safe and supported. They also gave her a drug that truly eased her suffering without causing her to be completely sedated. However, I did clash with one nurse who wanted to increase the dose right away and who implied I wanted to keep my mother alert when she needed to have pain relief. Other nurses and supervisors agreed to a lower dose. I know it's not easy to make these determinations, but don't be afraid to question what's happening and speak to whoever is in charge at the moment. I respect the expertise of health care professionals, yet every nurse will have their own preferences. Prior to Mom's arrival at Avow, she spent weeks at HealthPark hospital and 10 days at The Terraces. Care at The Terraces was just horrible, even when I was right there in the room. This facility is seriously understaffed, and I do feel sorry for the nurses, who are being put in a bad position. (Avoid this place if your loved one is very ill but being discharged and sent to rehab. It might be ok for someone there to rehab from a knee replacement.) Care at HealthPark was more frequent but still poor. My main complaint is lack of compassion, kindness, and professionalism at these places. I know it's easy to find fault, and I know understaffing is a serious problem. and yet health care is a higher calling and sick people deserve attention and care. I say all of this in order to compliment Avow, the only hospice I can report on. Nurses came frequently, they were compassionate to Mom and us. Thank you. Kindness was abundant and staff respected the gravity of the situation. My sister and I were impressed by the priest who made rounds. He was personal, and he wanted to know all about Mom's life. He wasn't put off when we told him that none of us, including Mom, still went to mass, and he didn't pressure us to do anything. I like to think Mom was comforted by the last rites he provided. Why not a 5 star review? A couple reasons: the TV/cable sitution is not great. This might sound unimportant, but my mother was awake and alert two evenings and wanted to watch TV. She said this. But there were many issues with the clicker, settings, and stations. Several staff tried to trouble shoot, but no one could solve the problems. Several stations were on the guide but not subscribed to, including, Turner Classic Movies, a channel that would provide a lot of comfort and familiarity to many patients. Another complaint is about follow through: during the one afternoon Mom was totally aware, she asked for her bed to be wheeled outside on the lanai. The nurse said she had to do something and would be right back but didn't return. So Mom never got to view the beautiful lake. Finally, the night Mom died, my sister and I felt pressured to call a funeral home immediately and to leave quickly. We felt we didn't have enough time with our mother and to gather up our things. It was the middle of the night, so I really don't understand why everything had to happen so quickly. We were in shock, devastated, and shouldn't have even been driving. Despite my criticisms, I believe the Avow facility is excellent and the staff are great. I am glad we brought Mom to the Naples location. I've also received many texts offering to provide support, and I appreciate that, too. I hope some of the shortcomings I've pointed out will be addressed for future patients and their loved ones.

You were supposed to reach out before this, so I feel like the public needs to know. There are individuals who work at Vitas that we would recommend but we will not recommend you or your organization as a whole. A nurse said she would come back two days after my mom came home, and the nurse did not. I was left to try to figure out how to move my mom and address sores and other issues by myself. My mom passed 9 days after she came home and thank goodness for that or she would have suffered further unreasonably. We were also told we would have 24 hour access (phone) to resources and they would understand my mom's case. That was wrong. We had a decline over the weekend and everyone I spoke to on the phone appeared to not have access to my mom's files, and I had to repeat her situation to multiple people in an effort to get her relief from her pain. That was incredibly difficult and painful especially after I assured her (a former nurse) that we had the resources we needed. Our family has had a lot of experience with hospice providers, and this experience was a nightmare. If I did not have my husband to keep after Vitas while I was trying to take care of my mom, it would have been an even worse nightmare. I will say once we got into crisis care, it was much better, but that does not take away the pain and suffering your team caused.

I would rate Miami hospital at 10 I would rate Naples Hospital at one. Or less horrible experience I woke up with a tube down my throat. I couldn't scream. I sat up four times on the operating table over 10 minutes till they finally pulled 8 foot of hose out of my heart out through my legs in excruciating pain. Definitely would not recommend Naples go to a real hospital.

Two of the three window blinds smack dab in front of the bed and facing a sidewalk were WIDE OPEN!!! GEEZ. CNA 101... respect the resident and close the window blinds prior to undressing the resident!!! Duh!! Moorings Park...this is NOT the first time I have witnessed this. Once at night I was walking around the building and bcz CNAs neglected to shut the blinds for the elderly lady in memory care and shut the bathroom door... she was seen on the toilet. Nice job Chateau CNAs!! Maybe learn to pay attention to details. You have a job at a highly ranked Skilled Nursing Center. And Memory Care residents and their families expect much better.

Knowing that mom was in Ydira's care for several months was very comforting and I knew that she would receive the best of care. Mom spent her last 5 days at the hospice inpatient facility and all of the staff there were so caring and compassionate. Watching a loved one die, especially a parent, isn't an easy task. Having those around you and taking care of that loved one with the utmost care and professionalism makes the event a bit easier to deal with. I know it sounds strange to make this recommendation but if you do need hospice care for a loved one - I highly recommend VITAS.

She said everything was fine but he was actively dying and had maybe a few hours to live. She said she didnt see his Funeral arrangements (nobody asked when we admitted) and space was limited in the mourge (she stressed space in the mourge several times) and tried to pitch funeral homes to me. All while talking over me trying to tell her we prearranged and prepaid for a funeral 10 years earlier. After she stopped trying to aggressively sell me a funeral and heard what I was saying she got even more demanding and arguementive. Then demanded the funeral homes contact. I said I would call them in an hour or so when they opened (out of state one time zone back) just to double check who needs called (shipping company because of the nature of moving a body) to double check for sure. I had to make that statement in rapid order at least six times to shut her up. Then I confirmed the information and called it into the office (equally bad experience, tried avoiding taking the information) . Then after my dad passed and fishing for reviews I was contacted and gave a piece of my mind. A few days later a Supervisor called and apologized. Asked if I would be happy if they sent the nurse to sensitivity training. I chuckled and said she has no business being an RN in an inner city ER nurse let alone a hospice nurse.
