This review is long delayed as our wedding was in October 2025 and engagement photos in April 2025 but looking back at the pictures captured by Vivian brings back so much good memories! Viv was immediately our first choice because she has an incredible portfolio of photographing in redwoods and nature which is sometimes very difficult to photograph with the different lighting. We are a bit awkward but from the get go, she was easy to talk to and was also organized. Our wedding was on the casual side so we did not have a planner but Viv was on top of everything and even though we had a day of coordinator, Viv was the one coordinating when it was her time and took lead which was much needed to wrangle everyone. The wedding was a tiny bit chaotic, running behind and rather short but Viv did a fantastic job capturing candid moments and making sure to pull us away for portrait photos away from everyone else before the wedding ended. She was professional and there wasn't a moment where I thought she was distracted. Her work speaks for itself but I really love that she shoots in multiple formats and captures the light and nature around the subjects so clearly and naturally. I often wish our wedding was slightly longer or not running behind because that would have given Viv even more time to take amazing pictures! I highly recommend working with Vivian Chen and her associate photographer Erin Prado for your wedding! Both of them were wonderful from start to finish and our photographs came out gorgeous. I really wanted a photographer with a natural look (not the overly bright/blown out look you so often get in wedding photos) and a focus on candids, and they came out just as fantastic as I expected from looking through their portfolios. We worked with Erin for a mini engagement session and our wedding and she was lovely on both days - really relaxed and personable while still giving us great direction on poses and positioning. Small things so we were still moving naturally and acting like ourselves, but really helpful (ie: having my husband put his hand in his pocket, reminding me to hold my bouquet lower). She also did lots of candid-style/natural positioning, like having us look at each, talk, laugh, walk, etc... and all of those are my favorite shots. She's also just really nice, professional, and respectful - we did private vows and she gave us some space for privacy while still getting some lovely shots of it. The final edits done by Vivian came out beautifully, her style feels very cinematic and I love it! She also turned them around much faster than I expected, we got teasers 4 days after our wedding, and the full gallery of over 850 photos in just two weeks! She advised us to expect 4-6 weeks so that was a lovely surprise (probably helped by our wedding being a bit before busy season). I'd absolutely recommend them both to anyone! read more

This is a long belated (but well-deserved!) review as we took our engagement photos with Vivian in July 2024 at Filoli and then had her photograph our wedding in September 2024 at Ruth Bancroft Garden. We loved all of our photos, and we appreciate that instead of posing us too much, she lightly gave guidance and reference for the best photos. We are self-confessed a very awkward couple when taking photos, but we never felt awkward during our engagement session and wedding. Vivian also took amazing photos that highlighted the beauty of the venues that we selected and really allowed us to remember our special day. When selecting a vendor for photography, I reached out and inquired with many photographers. Vivian was extremely responsive from the first initial outreach, and she shared links of portfolios done at our wedding venue so we could get a sense of her work. We had a great virtual meet and greet with her, and her authentic photography style really resonated with us. Some of the best photos from our day were candid moments that she had a great eye for capturing! With so many wedding photographers around these days, her years of experience and professionalism really reassured us. We had a small micro wedding (less than 15 guests), and a photographer could easily stick out when the guest count is that low, but she was able to stay back and just photograph the day, allowing us to breathe and enjoy this special moment with our families. Viv also delivered our portfolios so quickly - my family could not believe the quick turnaround! The variety of photos that she was able to take at Filoli for our engagement session also impressed a lot of our friends and family. They could not believe they were all taken at one venue. I also encourage other self-confessed awkward couples to do an engagement session with Viv before the wedding - it allows you to work out the kinks and figure out what you liked about your photos and what you didn't like so you can apply that knowledge to the wedding. It's also good practice for the "walk towards the camera but give each other a kiss" which took us a little to practice and sync up. ;) We would wholeheartedly recommend Viv to anyone looking for a photographer. When looking for a wedding photographer, I was interested in two things: 1. Someone experienced with elopements. As we were having a small ceremony of 10, it was important to us that we felt comfortable working with someone in such an intimate and vulnerable setting. 2. A photography style that was more journalistic and less like the overexposed bright wedding photos I often see. Vivian fit everything we were looking for. Of course, with COVID, she had being doing a lot of elopements, so I was a fan of the work on her Instagram. I also love her editing style with more moody tones and how she captured candid moments. Vivian shot our engagement photos on an allergen-filled day in spring. Despite my runny eyes and sneezes every 5 mins, you couldn't tell from the photos! A reason we picked Vivian is because like us, she's a nature and scenery lover, and has a keen eye for incorporating it into portraits. We chose Sunol Regional Park as a backdrop because it's particularly lush in the spring, with wildflowers and greenery. Also, we took a small hike there with our families when they first met, so it's significant to our relationship. The session itself was fun, due to Vivian's method of subtle direction. Given I was so enmeshed in wedding planning logistics, it was nice to just BE and not think. We received photos within a few days. The beauty and drama of the location resounded in each photo. I'm a very visual and design-oriented person myself and was super satisfied with the compositions, lighting, framing, and editing of the set. To top it off, we looked good (and natural)! Just go with Vivian already...! ;) Vivian captured the best moments (and hundreds of other great ones) at our wedding on a cliff overlooking the beach and our indoor restaurant reception last winter on Valentine's Day (!), 2014. It was so wonderful of her and her second photographer to climb that hill, join us on a holiday, and even work with us on our limited budget. Vivian was super responsive and clear. She's detail-oriented and organized, while being warm and personable, making her so easy to work with. Her enthusiasm about shooting our small, intimate wedding made us excited and feel special. She even provided easy and effective tips during the wedding planning process so things could run smoothly the day of, helping us manage our worries about the weather and possibly staining my dress! Viv was great at helping this couple feel relaxed well before and during our wedding day. We went with Vivian in the first place because her work is so spectacular. Our pics turned out beautiful--clear, vibrant, and natural. She made us feel comfortable, while getting great shots. During our ceremony, she was never intrusive, yet totally there and present. She scouted the best spots to take picturesque photos. She worked with us to get all the special portraits we wanted with our family and 3 dogs! Things worked out so well, we were ahead of schedule on our timeline. During our indoor reception, Viv was pretty much part of the fam. This is reflected in the kind of candids she got that evening. I highly recommend Vivian, she is everything you could want in a wedding photographer! She helped us every step of the way in planning our elopement, giving advice about our SF City Hall wedding as she has ample experience with weddings there. When Covid struck, she was very professional, accommodating, and flexible with our contract, allowing us to break up her time into two separate events. When we finally met at our wedding, Vivian was kind and professional, recording our event unobtrusively and then guiding us through a variety of shots and poses.
