Lordy Jesus. I understand this is a historic theater but the viewing room was not what I expected LOL. The room is narrow, and the screen underwhelming, given one is there to have a cinematic experience. Seats are comfy, but there is a certain ...funk, if you will. Sound? -- well, let's just say you could hear the bumping music from the bar/lounge next door to throughout the film. Ugh. Still, it's absolutely vital to support such an institution -- especially in the arts!! I hope renovations can be implemented in the near future... read more

I watched "Video Dreams: A VHS Massacre Story" during the SF IndieFest this past weekend, an inspiring documentary by Thomas Seymour, Tim Kulig, and Mike Aransky. Two doors down from the Big Roxie, next to Dalva Bar, it's cozy at the Little Roxie with less than 50 seats in the auditorium and cupholders only available on some of the seats, not all. And the seats themselves are dated and seemed kind of low (I sat in one of the back rows), so much that heads in front of you may block your view if not in a staggered seating position. I'm also not a fan of single-aisle theater auditoriums. That being said, despite its imperfections, the Little Roxie still has much to appreciate. Entry was quick and easy with no lines to wait in. Plus, it allows the historic Roxie Theater to host events like the SF IndieFest, showing multiple films without relying solely on the Big Roxie. Guests will find snacks and merchandise for sale behind the small counter near the lobby entrance. read more

STAFF WAS GREAT! The concessions guy was very nice and even waved at me when I went out to use the restroom during the show. Went to see Mad God here, and the movie was .... okay... but the Little Roxie and the Roxie was super cute and quaint. Def coming here again!!! read more

Watched a film at the Little Roxie for the very first time! It was great to see what a small film/non-corporate theatre was like. It seemed like there was 2 date seats (one seat meant for 2 people) SO CUTE if thats what those seats were. The Little Roxie less than 50 seats. Felt pretty intimate and the crowd reactions as we were watching the film definitely added to the experience! However the room was more narrow than it was wide? The screen was a little smaller than I expected. Our showing was at 7. Seating start at 6:30 and not earlier. My group arrived there at 6 because we wanted to make sure we had great seats. The staff is hit or miss with most staffers being a hit. One person seemed pretty agitated and not very friendly. Meanwhile, someone else saw that my group waited an hour before showing gave us the LAST promotional poster + pins. If you were the staff person that gave us that, thank you so much! Just when you thought you knew everything about the City... I recently made a trip to the Roxie to catch a documentary, "The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin" (wonderful, see it) and after selling me my ticket I was told to walk two doors down to "the Little Roxie". What? When did that happen? The Little Roxie is at least 50% funkier than the original Roxie owing to its size. It's got one aisle, all seats to the right of that aisle, and only about 8 seats in each row. The screen isn't very big but sits up sort of high so it's impossible for anyone to block your view. If you're familiar with Artsist's Television Access (Valencia Street), you might see similarities between it and Little Roxie. Does any of this matter? Not if you're seeing a good film. As I watched the previews of coming attractions I couldn't help but notice that each one looked worse to me than the one before it. This probably means I won't be heading back to Little Roxie anytime soon but if I again noticed something playing there that I was interested in seeing the venue would do nothing to stop me. Tucked next to Dalva bar is the Little Roxie. Smaller independent films are played here. You get a whole new intimate experience. A few of the sections have love seats so if you're looking for a place to sit with your sweetie, see a film at the Little Roxie. I actually kinda liked this spot better than the proper Roxie theater, but then again, it's been awhile since I've been to the Roxie. Blink and you might miss it. The only thing wrong with this location is you can hear music from the bar so if you're watching a film with a lot of dialogue, then you just have to ignore it. It only fits about 49 people in here. read more

Old School San Francisco! This theater dates to before WWII. It's small, funky, and a great place to see a foreign documentary/asian horror flick/or old punk rock film. The screen sits high, so get ready to settle back. The Roxie is famous for great popcorn, and a free small sample, don't miss it! Room seats about 60 people. If you're watching a horror flick you can feel people shaking in your row. If there's something I want to see I'm totally there! Thanks Little Roxie! read more

Just saw Journey From The Fall in this theater. Seems like an annex to the Roxie Cinema that New College of California decided to open up. I'm glad they're still funding and supporting independent theaters like this. The seating is no different than Roxie Cinema. Just one theater room here compared to, I think, two over at the main Roxie theater next door. It's not your flashy stadium-like seating you see at the newer theaters (AMC, Century, etc), but the normal, flat theater seating which is fine with me. Plenty of leg room if you want to stretch out your legs and it has a standard sized theater screens. The concession stand doesn't charge an arm and a leg for movie snacks unlike the big corporate places. There's plenty of restaurants around to eat after watching a movie anyway so who cares about some popcorn or a hotdog anyway? read more

This is sort of an overflow for the main Roxie Theater, showing the much lesser-known, even more "indie" and non-mainstream films than the main Roxie. If there's something you want to see and this is the only place playing it, by all means see it here. The screen is small enough that if you have a decent home television setup you might be better off home if it's a movie you can wait for Blu-Ray/streaming for. There's popcorn and regular concessions that are reasonably priced. Their popcorn is very good, and there's a nice small size that you get free per visit if you're a member. No alcohol in this theater though unlike the main Roxie. So it comes down to how much you want to see whatever is playing here. If you're a member you get into most shows for free, so there's that. You may also be charmed by the quaintness and intimacy of the venue and wind up becoming a regular. It's worth checking out at least once. read more

I first made my acquaintance with the Little Roxie over this year's SF Indie Film Fest. When I got my ticket for "The Drummond Will" and was told to go over to the Little Roxie, I didn't know what to expect. When I found it, it looked sketchtastic. I shuffled in front of the door uncomfortably. Upon entering I realized it wasn't sketchy at all, just pleasantly dumpy. I want to say that the little theater provides an intimate setting, but it's old-feeling and run-down enough that you kind of don't want to think about the Little Roxie being intimate with anyone, so I'll spare you the mental image. Tiny screen, tiny aisles, and big cushy love seats scattered here and there (those things are genius!) comprise the main theater, and while I wouldn't recommend it to someone who's claustrophobic, it really does wonders to remind you that seeing a movie is really a communal affair - if you wanted, you could probably wait for "Nude Nuns With Big Guns" to make its way to the internet and watch it from home. But that's not why you watch stuff like that - it's far superior in a worn, shabby theater surrounded by like-minded individuals who have all done a great job of pre-gaming. A couple other inconveniences that are maybe a little less endearing - you can totally hear the music from the bar next door through all the films you'd want to see in the evening, so if you have a hard time tuning out ambient noise you're kind of screwed. The concession stand at the front of the Little Roxie is also pretty bare bones, if it's supplied at all, so you'll want to get your goods from the main theater next door. Okay, that one doesn't really bother me. But it may bother you! Either way, the Little Roxie is an experience, and one I'd recommend. It's not superb, but it's nice. They don't judge you there. read more

I love mini movie theaters, especially mini movie theaters with "love seats". My favorite part of a theater like this (screen a third the size of big theaters, about 30 seats) is people who walk in and are surprised by the size...haha, dumbasses!!!! Its a theater, thats all I got. read more

Nice little venue to see an independent film. We were hoping for the Roxie main theatre but out of luck. Very small theater, about 5 seats in each row and 1 main aisle. We were lucky enough to snatch a loveseat chair which was very cozy and felt like our own living room. Popcorn with butter was delicious and it's nice of them to have complimentary disposable cups and water pitchers. Unfortunately no alcohol is sold here :( read more

We just saw the wonderful film, "Cats of Mirikitani" here. It ends on May 3rd. This film is a documentary about Jimmy Mirikitani, an 80 something Japanese American man, who had lived in the Topaz "internment" camp, worked as a chauffeur for some rich guy, lived on the streets of NYC before he was befriended by the filmmaker who took him into her own modest apartment and helped him get his life on to more solid ground. http://www.thecatsofmirikitani.com/ Small theatre (49 seats) with 4 or 5 double seats. Intimate setting, newly remodeled. Very comfy even though the screen is small. Perfect venue for this sweet film. I would definitely see another movie at the Little Roxie. The Little Roxie was a trip! I felt like I was transported back to the St. Francis Theater's smaller screening room, circa 1979. I went to check out 'Dancing With The Devil' (Excellent film!) on opening night expecting to see it at The Roxie but when I purchased my ticket, the lady said that it was at The Little Roxie next door. I was shocked because I never knew there was a Little Roxie, let alone it being next door. Upon entering the spot, it felt like I was walking into someone's house. Found my way to the cozy screening room (which reminded me of the oldschool St. Francis Theater) and enjoyed my experience. Long live The Roxie and Little Roxie! read more

The Little Roxie is really tiny. It is the antithesis of today's modern, slick and gigantic multiplexes with stadium seating, 3-D films, Imax films and fully stocked concession stands. The theater is a long, narrow room with a small screen. Easy to get to, just 2 blocks from BART. Buy your ticket at the box office 2 doors down. Love the lobby painted with colorful murals, especially the kittens shooting wide beam lights out of their eyes. Just saw the documentary on Nicholas Vreeland, the son of diplomats and grandson of a former editor of Vogue magazine, who gave up his privileged life and career as a photographer to become a Buddhist monk. Turns out he couldn't give up his photography and this talent later helps him build a monastery in India. A quirky film shown in a quirky theater. read more

It's a cute little movie theater. I was hoping to see our feature film in the main Roxie theater but I guess they only use the venue for large showings. It was quaint, with a small concession stand in the front. It's not as dirty as it as the rest of the Mission where it's located at. My shoes didn't stick to the theater floor so that was a good sign. read more

Its an okay small theater. The size of that of the store size around the neighborhood. Chairs are old and the facility date, but that gives it it's charm. I did enjoy the two seater chairs mixed in with the single chairs. Sound quality could be better. But as a not big-box theater, it worked fine. The show we saw wasn't at full capacity, so I cannot comment on how it is when completely full. read more

I would give this place 5 stars for it's feel of a friend's basement viewing room, but the old chairs feel a bit crusty and it's *SO* small if you're not there late for the popular films, you have to sit solo. Get there early, enjoy the homey feel and the indy flick and don't get hung up on appearances. read more

I like independent cinemas, I like movies, but watching Mesrine at the Little Roxie was the worst experience in a long time...seats are uncomfortable and set in a very low angle relative to the height of the screen since the floor is not sloped; which also means everyone in front of you will be in your way when they go in & out of their seats. The sound was very mumbled and muffled tonight, and the film was fuzzy, not out of focus, just not bright enough (kinda like me!). $10 for a second run movie in an uncomfortable chair was not worth the trip. read more

Before coming here went many places most of this is some fault mainly their staffs service they are not responsive all the time but at the fast time was even after calling them had to wait. This one is different responsive staffs and great service. Highly recommend the place. read more

"You guys wanna go see some vag. on the big screen??"-an excerpt from an e-mail sent to us by a friend. "Ummm, hell yes" was my obvious reply. The return e-mail was instructions to meet everyone at the Roxie around seven on Thursday. Fast forward to Thursday and I walk up to the ticket window, give my money, and receive a Roxie ticket (which is just a plain raffle ticket and you will need to remember that small fact in a few seconds...). Ticket Window Man: You know this is at the Lil' Roxie?? Me: No, I don't. What's the Lil' Roxie? Sounds like a midget stripper. TWM: It's our other theater. Two doors down. *points to the left* Me: Okay. Cool. I walk in and give my ticket and purchase a water. (No Junior Mints??!?!?! ugh. Automatic minus 1 star.) After sitting in our seats, i look around and this is a very cool and well kept theater. I still think the screening room at the Opera Plaza is smaller... but this is nicer. A few minutes later someone walks in with folding chairs saying they've overbooked the theater weirdly enough. Lights go down. Movie starts sans previews (BOO.... HISSSSSS. Seriously, no previews. You need previews at an art-house indie theater. Everyone knows about Die Hard 12 coming out, but they may not be aware of the cool foreign film that you may be screening next week. Plus, seeing previews is one of the few things I am OCD about at the movies. If I know I am going to miss them, I will wait til a later show). Once the movie is on for about 45 seconds a few audience members get up because they are in the wrong theater. There were also a few that figured it out before the movie started. That's the problem with having raffle tickets instead of real tickets when you have two different movies starting at the same time on two different screens. Also, the dirty film that I was promised was actually a documentary called "The Business of Being Born." It was about the need for a shift to home births. I knew this going in, but what I didn't know was that the movie contained a full-frontal view of a pregnant Rikki Lake... warn a brother. In summation: Fix your tickets, add previews, and stock Junior Mints!! Other than that, great theater for seeing great films. read more

I want to give this place more stars, but you know what its just an okay really small theater. I think this is the new addition to the roxie next door. This place has two things going for it. One, it place great independent movies that you just can't find playing anywhere else. Two, it has cool cat paintings on the wall inside. read more

Cute little theater. Be sure to get here early so you can snag a seat in the back. The theater is very small and has limited seating. I found it a bit uncomfortable to sit toward the front because I had to watch the film looking up at a sharp angle. But it's a great little theater. Happy to spend my money at small businesses like this instead of huge corporations. read more

After a ten-year hiatus, I had the chance to see several documentaries at the Little Roxie. It is great to watch films with other people who share your interest. Nobody checking their phone like at a cineplex. Love this funky little gem and if I lived closer to SF, I would see more movies there. read more
