TL; DR: Get the Spagehtti Uh-O's and Chicken Vesuvio The Spaghetti Uh O's were delicious and fun, especially with the personalized can. The asparagus was also surprisingly good. The focaccia was fine, though it would have been better served with a higher-quality butter or cheese on the side for dipping. The pappardelle pasta was really good, the green sauce in particular was amazing. The wedge salad was solid, but nothing to write home about. The steak was good. Do not walk, run to Void! Since moving back to Chicago, we have made a consistent effort to get out of our neighborhood to try new restaurants. Void did not disappoint. The restaurant was definitely busy on a Friday night, and we made a reservation for a 7:45 seating and were taken to our table right away. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We loved the play on an old neighborhood bar with the fun red and white glass chandeliers that you would find at any watering hole in the city.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Funny enough, we discovered Void via a Tik Tok video and came specifically to try the Agnolotti. This is by far one of the best pasta dishes I've ever had. The sweet potato paired with ricotta, kimchi, scallion and toasted sesame are an amazing touch and play on this type of pasta. We additionally ordered both the house made focaccia and the Spaghetti Uh-O's. These two items are definitely what Void is known for, and we loved both of them. The focaccia was super fresh, and the side of butter with honey was incredible. The spaghetti came in a fun little branded can, which of course added a nice touch to the dish. We ordered several cocktails on their menu, and were so full by the end that we did not order the dessert. The staff was super friendly during the entirety of our time at the restaurant. There seemed to be a lot of couples on dates here, so this is a great date spot or somewhere for a more intimate dinner. Drinks = Survival Item: Sweet, but not oppressively so, this drink has a pleasant bitterness reminiscent of Amaro. It's rich and has just the right amount of booziness. You'll find it in the "Unfamiliar" section of the menu, and it's as approachable as it is creative. No-Lört: The bar claims to have successfully removed Malört's only redeeming feature, and they might be right. The No-Lört is sweeter, with a less bitter aftertaste that doesn't linger as long. I have a tradition where friends visiting from out of town must take a shot of Malört with me. For my friends who don't drink, this will have to be close enough, even if I won't get the same satisfaction as I would from the "torture" of the real thing. Atmosphere and Service = The vibe is pleasant and a little unusual. The cooler has stained glass, taper candles are on the bar, and fire-light bulbs add to the ambiance. The music helps set the scene and plays at a reasonable volume. The service is very friendly, welcoming, and kind. Food = I do have one gripe, and it's about their food menu. A bar really benefits from a well-thought-out appetizer selection. It's invaluable to have small bites for people who aren't looking for a full meal but don't want to drink on an empty stomach. Here, the appetizer-like options are bread, a wedge salad, and carrots--rabbit food, in other words. Something like tacos, tuna tartare, or deviled eggs would be a godsend and would keep me coming back more often. Since I'm perpetually hungry, I opted for the Chicken Parm. The chicken, which seemed to be breaded and baked, was cooked well. I also enjoyed the tomato sauce and, of course, the cheese. It was a large portion, too--great for those who are extra hungry. The dish reminded me of something I would make at home to impress a date. For context, I'm not a gifted cook, but I can make a mean salmon. While I don't expect every meal out to be eligible for Beat Bobby Flay, it would have been better if something about it felt a step above what I could make myself. Final Thoughts = All that said, Void seems to be the kind of place where I'll eat elsewhere but absolutely stop in afterward for the excellent drinks, friendly service, and splendid vibes. read more

Another local gem comes to Avondale. Amazing food and drinks. Cocktails are outstanding (heard it was ex- Violet hour program) and wouldn't be surprised if they get a bib gourmand for the food. This is an eccentric little place! It has a dark, moody, almost pagan-esque vibes. The menu is very limited but everything we got was delicious; we're looking forward to trying the rest. The focaccia was simple and mild, yet complex in flavor. I enjoyed the pork belly I got. It was delightfully crispy on the outside yet tender and juicy within. My partner got the octopus, which he raved about. There's little crunchy bits in the octopus pasta that add a really appealing texture to it and just enough heat to make your tongue tingle a little. The tiramisu was not too sweet nor heavy and wrapped up the meal nicely. We went early in the evening and service was pretty quick for us; can't speak to the rest of the evening. She was very rude to say the least, I don't think she enjoys being a waitress, and I recommend that she change professions if she's not happy doing what she's doing. From the moment I sat down, waiting for my friends to join me and asked for a sparkling water instead of still, her annoyance became obvious. It only became worse when I asked about gluten-free options for accompaniment to their cheeseboard. She went into a rant about how they make their pasta's in house, which wasn't my question because I wasn't ordering pasta. But when I responded that there are gf pastas, She became combative, raising her voice to tell me that they make their pasta in house. Good for them, that's great! However, I was wondering what items could be done GF, not what items were out of the question for me to order. By the way, we had called prior to our visit (my friend called) to ask if they had gluten-free options and were told that almost everything on the menu could be made gluten-free. When we got there, the waitress said that was not true. We ordered Branzino , steak, a beet salad and a wedge salad, a cheeseboard, focaccia bread ( which I couldn't have, but my friends said was delicious, especially with the honey butter), cocktails, and wine. I asked if they could serve vegetables or if they had anything to accompany the cheese board and was told in a very angry manner what you see on the menu is all we have. OK, but that doesn't mean that you don't have carrots or tomatoes that could be used for the whipped feta, or anything else that you use in your dishes that could be dipped in or eaten with cheese. One of my friends was upset because the waitress kept taking the plates away before we were completely done (she wanted to dip her bread into the remaining sauce and honey butter) and instead of timing out our meal so that we could finish our salads and cheese, she came to the table to tell us that our next course, the entrées were coming out and we needed to make room. Her attitude was unpleasant and we felt rushed. Had her words and actions been kinder and more service oriented, I wouldn't be leaving this review. The Branzino was delicious, but it did have some bones. The steak was done to perfection and tasted delicious. They removed the topping that was not gluten-free, which was great for me, but she should've brought that out on the side for my two friends who are not gluten-free and could've had that topping. (My friend actually said she had the steak before and the topping really made it for her). Or at least asked if they wanted it. All in all, I would love to go back and support the owner Pat, but there are a lot of great restaurants in Chicago that are way more accommodating to people with any kind of food allergies. And, this restaurant was trying to be helpful per the owner, but maybe he needs to retrain his staff or at least this waitress. I picked Void for my birthday dinner in February and that was a really great choice for me. The menu sounded great, the drinks enticed me, and it's in a part of town I don't frequent often, so it was fun for a little change of scenery. as soon as I walked in, I fell in love with the decor. This is not your Gold Coast or West Loop bistro interior-designed within an inch to polished perfection. This is a fun, 70s-inspired, kooky vibe that feels almost like a friend's basement. The huge Last Supper painting was a hoot! So unstuffy and unpretentious, which I found to be a nice contrast with the elevated cuisine. The focaccia was fantastic, but what really made it was the fermented honey butter served with it. You will be scraping it off the plate with every crumb. The shrimp toast is a fun Italian-ized take on someone's favorite pupu platter appetizer, scampi style with kind of a piccata situation, lemony buttery, bright. We got this crispy-tender pork dish (copa di testa) served with lentils and cherries--the server recommended it and rightly so! Delish. For our mains we went pasta crazy with the Spaghetti Uh-Os, which has become something of a signature, and rightly so--vodka sauce pasta rings with the tenderest lil meatballs? I'll take a can to go! We got the cheese lasagna, which is a nice option for any vegetarians in the audience--it'll take out to Stouffers town in a Proust's madeleine kinda way, so amazing. My favorite dish of the night was probably the chicken parm, which made me feel like the restaurant critic in Ratatouille (another Proust's madeleine reference), because this was my mom's signature dish when I was a kid and it really transported me back to time unattainable. We had to get both desserts because the birthday boy, me, couldn't decide. The chocolate tiramisu is what to get if you're not a big sweets person--it was rich and bittersweet with lots of dark chocolate, and the herbal fernet branca balanced really nicely. The seasonal sundae was peanut butter jelly time, absolutely fantastic. They have a great drink menu consisting of wine, cocktails, mocktails and more. The food was very expensive for the quality and portion sizes. The lasagna was really cheesy to where it couldn't hold its own form, it barely had any protein or enough layers because it was baked in a very shallow dish. The spaghetti uh-ohs were disappointing as they were served in a can for presentation - it felt quite childish. The vodka sauce was okay, but the meat balls in the sauce tasted like canned meat balls. Honestly, the staff were a bit cold. They told us they couldn't accommodate us at a table despite one being open the entire time we dined there. They told us we could sit anywhere at the bar, and when we said we wanted to be away from the door, they said we could only sit at the front half of the bar near the front door. They weren't friendly when we arrived as they were more concerned with our reservations. Our server got our order wrong by missing a whole dish - they said our cabbage was supposed to come out after the lasagna and spaghetti "uh ohs," but to me, it felt like they completely forgot because we had waited quite a bit of time with empty plates in front of the servers at the bar. This is a 3.5 and not a 4 mostly due to my service experience. Called the place at 6:30pm asking how long the wait was and they said 40min. They kindly put us on the waiting list and we walked over right on time for the app to say 1 party ahead of us. The host though said they took in walk ins and therefore it's another 40min wait. I really didn't like that because I had not gotten any communications about it. The food was good - the gnocchi was very well seasoned and tasty. Then spaghetti was alright. The bread service was very nice. Drinks were good, Negroni was the classic and the black Manhattan was a 4/5. The tiramisu with fernet was 10/5. We dined at void tonight, a whimsical interpretation of Italian that reminded me of the Childhood menu at Next. I couldn't help but be charmed. Before we went, I didn't want to like it. I didn't plan to like it, because the name of the restaurant is unappealing to me and I looked over the menu online and nothing struck my fancy, but once our first course, Shrimp Scampi Toast, hit the table and I realized it was a riff on Chinese-American shrimp toast that was brilliantly executed and topped with perfectly cooked prawns and scampi butter, I was smitten. I don't know how the shrimp mousseline gets into the center of the bread or how the bread heals around it to obscure the tampering, but it sure is a fun texture and it's delicious. Then the most popular dish arrived, Spaghetti-Uh-O's, a fictional brand satirizing the iconic canned mush from childhood, except this version is al dente, rich, and contains little meatballs any nonna would be proud of. Another fun dish is the Chicken Marsala, which is actually Korean fried chicken drenched in maitake marsala served in a paper bag with a little squeeze bottle of buttermilk dressing. We also enjoyed branzino, a menu item seemingly without a gimmick, which was cooked to perfection and plated beautifully with a crisp salad of fennel, frisée, and Frenched green beans. Service was exceptional, and the wine list featured a wine we've been meaning to try (Occhipinti SP68 Sicilia Rosso IGT 2020 Frappato - Nero d'Avola, Sicily) since we caught the purveyor's guest spot on Stanley Tucci's show about Italy. I've been here 3 times and each time it was delicious. Love the specialty pastas, the Cobb salad and the bread.

The place: really interesting decor- like walking into a converted church, or a place that bought out a church yard sale with mosaic tiles on the cold case, the last supper on a massive mural taking up most of one wall, vintage lamp, all thoughtfully curated to create a modern, yet familiar vibe. Service was excellent. We never had empty water glasses, and though I didn't get an alcoholic drink (dry January), when we ordered the tiramisu which was soaked in fernet, our server wanted to make sure alcohol in that form was okay. One thing to note - the tables at the benches are REALLY close together. I'm not an exceptionally large person, but with a puffy coat in the winter, squeezing in between the tables was a bit of a feat. Those seats are definitely not for everyone. The taste: focaccia - the fermented garlic honey butter - an amazing conception. Rich, balanced, on top of the bitter and sour notes of the focaccia, was a great way to kick off the meal. The carrot dish was well-portioned, and the pickled turnips made the dish especially interesting. The carrots had a depth of flavor that I'll be thinking about for a while. The scallops. Oh the scallops. Cooked to perfection, swimming in a sea of rich, cheesy risotto. The onions added an acidic break you needed. Lasagna - solid. Hefty. Rich. A well-executed piece of lasagna, though we may not order it the next time we end up here. The seasonal sundae included a rich and delicious peanut butter gelato paired with a lighter raspberry sorbet. I thought the tiramisu, while not coffee forward, had bitter, dark chocolate notes in it that I enjoyed, but my boyfriend really had an aversion to the fernet soaked cake. I think they rotate the tiramisus, so if fernet isn't your thing, don't fret. My face: satisfied smile. $150 pre-tip for the dishes above plus a couple alcoholic drinks and a Diet Coke. Went to Void a few weeks back. We live near and frequent that area a lot (Central Park, Mother's Ruin, Loaf Lounge, Deep Red, etc.) and were glad to see a new restaurant come together. Unfortunately, the experience was pretty disappointing. We had a reservation, so can't say much about the wait. [[HIGHLIGHT]]As other reviewers have mentioned, it is a nice looking space.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Got seated pretty quickly once we got in. The food was okay. Portions are small for what they charge, but that seems to be more and more the case around town. Entrees - branzino was fine but not much to it. Also got the Spaghetti uh-ohs, which were also decent but way overpriced. It's mostly a cute gimmick that comes to the table in a can. I appreciate the nostalgia, but my portion was small and had very few meatballs (maybe that's the uh-oh of it). The flavors were pretty good, but there was not much there, frankly, past the gimmick. But we were there for a good time and could have been more fine with it, if it wasn't for the service. Our waitperson (an older, gray haired woman) was the problem. After getting our drink orders, tried to push us into ordering our meal. Okay, we just basically sat down so needed a few minutes. Drinks (quite good) came and we were ready to order. The waitperson got a little more pushy and then huffy when they realized that we were not interested in ordering starters. We were expecting a nicely portioned Italian meal, so didn't want to get too full and prefer to leave room for dessert. We each ordered salads and entrees but that did not seem to be enough for our waitperson. Well, that was it for seeing the waitperson at our table. A runner dropped off the food. We would see her walking around but just far enough away, never came back to check on us or to see if we wanted another drink or anything. I sat there waiting to order another drink and just got more and more annoyed. No one came by or said anything to us. I guess I could've gone up to the bar to ask for a drink but I was getting aggravated. Plus, I'm at a restaurant with someone who is *supposed* to be waiting on our table. This isn't like Italy where the waitstaff leave you alone but are still walking by, smoothly checking to see if your glasses are empty. If the waitperson wanted to pad the bill with starters, why not see if we wanted more drinks? We walked to the restaurant and I would've had three drinks in total and my spouse would've had at least two if not three. We've been around industry folks long enough to know how those margins work. After studiously ignoring us for a while, she could not help but come by since we were obviously done with dirty dishes on the table. Then they were chipper as they asked if we wanted anything else. This was after her coming by once in over an hour. Nope, that was it, we are done with the place. Ready to walk to another establishment to get a long-awaited drink, forget about dessert. It's too bad, because we had really wanted a new Italian spot to go to. I'm glad others seem to have enjoyed their experience. Void is not quite a "red gravy" type of spot, but has enough that's close if trying to make things a little more elevated. At those prices, however, I am not into paying a premium for that kind of service. Plenty of new spots are opening up in the neighborhood anyway. read more

We did an early reservation one day. The food was excellent, drinks were unusual and good and service was on point. This is a late review so I think the menu has changed but I got a pork dish was ahhhmazing. We'll definitely be back. read more

Went on a tasting journey last night and was NOT disappointed!!! Every single thing we got was absolutely amazing. Think Lula Cafe inspired food with an edgy sense of humor in a kitchy dimly lit upscale dive bar. I did the unthinkable and didn't take a single photo, but, the food is SO GOOD you can just trust me that I wouldn't steer you wrong here. We started with the housemade foccacia and cheese plate. The foccacia was fresh, buttery, with a crispy crust. Outstanding. The cheese plate was the perfect tasting amount for the three of us, really salty, really yummy with some honey chili peppers on the side which was a REALLY nice touch. Pork Belly with polenta was absolutely amazing!! The mushrooms were a perfect addition. We had the spaghetti-uh-ohs and the lasagna, which were so rich and tasty. Like what home cooked wishes it was...we had the steak which was cooked perfectly, and dressed with onions and pickled shallots, which is honestly now my favorite way to have steak. We got the gelato, sorbet, and the tiramisu lol. (We calorie banked for this hahaha) The dark chocolate gelato was the best I've ever had, truly unforgettable. The sorbet as well, I felt like I was having Michelin star dessert. The tiramisu was INSANE. I will be back to try the rest of your menu!
