This place is known for alcohol drinks. That is what you should get if you're forced to come here for social obligations. Food is weird fusion-americana that made me grimace and choose not to order anything myself at the table. It's food for people that think they know what fine food is. Another person in our group did the same and only ordered a beverage. Staff do not have uniform, dress code or wear classic black. This spot is a neighborhood favorite for a reason! From delicious drinks to inventive dishes, it's definitely a place you'll want to add to your hit list. It's popular and can get pretty crowded, so for a walk-in I recommend getting there early. At around 4:30pm on a Friday, I was able to snag a seat at the bar, but it was already starting to fill up. The staff was very attentive and friendly, patiently providing recommendations. They specialize in whiskey drinks, so I recommend giving one of these a try. I opted for the Gold Rush, which was generously poured and surprisingly refreshing. It wasn't too sweet and I enjoyed the light citrus flavor. The food rotates regularly, so there's always a chance to try something new. This time, I ordered the lamb kefta and the charred sweet potato. The kefta was super tender and an explosion of flavors! The garlic chips, spicy tomato-based puree, and pickled onions made it among the best I've ever had. The sweet potato was interesting but a bit light on texture. I felt there could had been some more crunch (maybe nuts, seeds or pomegranate?) and felt that the citrus in the aioli was a bit overpowering. The fried kale on top was delicious, though- I'm not a huge kale fan, but I could snack on these alone. All in all, this was a great experience. I have been wanting to hit longman and eagle for ages as my love for chicago grows. An absolute institution, and for good reason. My friends and I, a group of 7, were able to walk in during a brunch rush on a saturday and still got sat immediately. The service was superb. Attention to detail, accommodations, everything was on point. Oh, and the food? Divine. Griddled sourdough is rich, buttery with some salted whipped butter and jam. The absolute star for me was the chicken fried steak. The caramelized onion jam gravy was insane. Slightly sweet, amazing texture, and still crazy rich. You also can't miss their breakfast sandwich with.... Wait for it..... bacon wrapped maple sausage!!!! You're probably thinking wtf is that. We were too, don't over think it. We kept being told 'a few more minutes' which resulted in us being seated an hour later. We should have just left by then but at that point we didn't want to wait at another restaurant. We were ready with our full order when the waitress came, but despite ordering at once we waited almost 30 minutes for our first plate and it was about 1 hour for our entres to come out. Very disappointed in longman. We had no dining experience as we quickly ate in hopes to get out of there at a decent time. I took a screenshot of the receipt which clocks us paying at 8:43pm. Total time was 2.5 hours. Without saying anything one of our entrees were comped and the bartender sent some non-alcoholic drinks to the table. Some dishes to order are the smoked duck hash (super good!), the chicken and waffles (well-balanced and crispy), and the smoked trout terrine (with lots of cool sides for pairing). My GF knew about this place (she's a former chef), I'd never heard of it cause I'm old. We went after a festival without rez's; the hostess was that rarest of creatures: she was eager and tireless in giving us a chance and after several minutes got us a great seat at the bar. There we watched the magic: the kitchen has a bikers in Disneyland vibe -- muscular, frenetic, honed. I'm not a big fan but the flavor with the jam was well balanced and the waffle was a very good pairing. It's pretty funky stuff. Bone marrow - apparently we don't like marrow... it's almost pure fat. Obviously not L&E's fault, but instead of strawberry-balsamic jam, we both thought it needed less sweetness and more brightness for balance. Oof, it's heavy stuff, now I know. Squash - it was ok. Points for being interesting, and it was a pretty dish, but I wouldn't get it again. Seared cod - it was cooked well. It was cooked in brown butter, served with beurre blanc... it was too much butter for me, but that's what I asked for. I would have liked some added flavors, but I guess they were letting the fish be the star. I can't argue with that. I don't love rich food so I'll take responsibility for that. read more

So scroll away if you're looking for an opinion on...most of their menu. Sorry!! I still had a great experience at Longman & Eagle, though. The non-meat options are still well thought out and unique. While my table was enjoying their burgers, I was perfectly happy with my seasonal gnocchi. And sneaking more of the roasted carrots before they noticed because they were sooo good. The space is absolutely classic Logan Square - rustic, a little hipster, a little millennial core, with cool art and super sweet servers. If I lived closer, I would absolutely come just to drink at the bar and have an app or two. I think we will be adding to the list of places to take out-of-towners, and a top spot in Logan! read more

Three items was a great portion to share for two people. For dessert we ordered the peanut butter pie and rhubarb upside cake. They both were awesome! Each dish was unique, super flavorful, and beautifully plated. The outdoor patio was relaxing, it's a bit tucked away in the neighborhood, so nice and quiet. The service was excellent! I initially had this on my list of places to try because they have an extensive whiskey list for my husband, but it turns out their food is amazing too. I ordered the Pears & Burrata and we shared a side of the latke hashbrowns with smoked apple butter. The pear and burrata was such a magical combination, I ordered it both times we went. As for the hashbrowns, I loved the new twist on an old favorite, but the apple butter was a little too smoky for my taste. I preferred them on their own or dipped in the pear/burrata sauce! Had Sunday brunch at this restaurant on a beautiful Chicago morning. We sat outside on the patio which is on a side street and reasonably peaceful. This is a farm to table restaurant and I can honestly say it was the best breakfast I've had in years. The farm fresh eggs were cooked perfectly. The potatoes boiled then grilled were tasty and had the perfect crusty texture. The fresh ground sausage patties were very tasty. Not like anything you find in the store. & the homemade sourdough brioche toast was phenomenal with homemade jam. I came here with a friend for Chicago Restaurant Week for lunch. They don't take reservations so it's first come-first serve. We came here around noon on a Saturday and it was busy. We put our name on the waitlist and they told us 30-40 min wait. But 5 min later they texted us that our table was ready so we got lucky! The place is spacious. There are two rooms in the back. I will def come back here to try their other menu items. Everything looks good here! Parsnip apple soup: wow, the best soup I ever had and I never had anything like it esp with roasted apple in a soup! The crispy parsnip adds a nice texture to the soup. The soup is smooth and creamy. Highly recommend! Wild boar sloppy Joe: it comes with fries and it's a good portion but I still ate all of it, more on the salty side and the fries were like regular fries. I liked the pickled jalapeño and it was not spicy at all. The potato roll was really good. It was slightly toasted but still soft. This was my first time here and I was told the chicken and waffles were great so that's what I ordered. The chicken and waffles comes with hot honey bourbon butter, sweet potatoes, bacon and pecans. There were a few too many potatoes for my liking but it was all very tasty. Trying to cut down on carbs, so I didn't eat too many of the potatoes! Both my friend and I were celebrating birthdays and our server brought us a birthday donut which I thought was really nice! If you are a coffee lover, they don't offer much in terms of coffee but the regular beverage selection is decent. The mimosas were good too. The kids were not eating, and the incredibly rude server Lily could not remember the 3 years olds OJ without being reminded. She proceeded to force us to add a table after consolidating as she was no where to be found so she could "have room to get to her other tables", leaving my mother stranded at one end. Other customers 3 times her size had no issue passing through the arrangement she made a scene over. She then made a point that we were not allowed to order a la carte and had to order all of the tapas style plates at once. She was kind enough to make a point of her making an exception when we ordered chips/dip while waiting for the rest of our party that was just a few minutes behind us. We barely saw Lily after placing orders, aside from her blatant scowling at the bar. Fortunately the busser who was very friendly kept our tables clean and waters refreshed. We expected to have a nice night out, Lily seemed to do everything she could to prevent that from happening. I would not suggest dining here with such rude staff on the team. Longman & Eagle was our savior when we really needed it. I flew into Chicago the night we came here and I was delayed. We had a reservation elsewhere and it was clear we were not going to make it in time. I looked at some other fine dining-type places and they all seemed to close around 9 or 10, so we had to pivot to something more casual. I went through my trusty restaurant and bar spreadsheet and settled on Longman & Eagle, both for the food and the whiskey. I wasn't really sure what to expect, but we were honestly blown away by everything, especially the food. Drinks are great, whiskey list is dizzying, service is wonderful. Easy five stars. We came here at around 9:30/9:45 on a Thursday night. Given that it was late, we had no issues getting a table. I had an annoying travel day plus a pinched nerve so I was not in the best mood which meant I was very excited to drink. This happens to be a very good place to do just that. Even though this is a whiskey spot, we actually opted for two non-whiskey drinks for our first round. I got the Bean-Tini with gin (Letherbee Gin, House Dilly Bean Brine, Orange Bitters) and my partner got the Thai Collins (Letherbee Gin, Ford's Gin, Makrut Lime Leaf, Lemongrass, Lime, Thai Basil). The server who brought them over to us said they were her favorite two drinks on the menu, so we were pleased with ourselves for intuiting that. Both drinks were delicious and unique. Any dirty martini variation is a friend of mine and this one featuring bean brine and a bean garnish was fun. Our server recommend the Logan Boulevardier (Sazerac 6 Year Rye, Cocchi di Torino, Campari, Angostura) for my second drink which was also a great choice. I'd never had a Boulevardier with this rye before so it was nice to taste the subtle differences this rye brings. My partner and I split a rye at the end of the meal which was spiced and toasty and amazing yet somehow I cannot remember what it was -- I just know it came highly recommended and we could see why. Food-wise, despite having more of a bar vibe, Longman and Eagle boasts a formidable dinner menu. We got two appetizers and two entrees and split everything, and it was plenty of food. Eats, below: Simple Greens Salad w/ Werp Greens, Herbs, Radish, Cucumber, Rosé Vinaigrette: A Simple but not boring. We wanted to make sure to get some veggies in this meal so this was an easy choice. Veggies were fresh (the radishes in particular were great) and the dressing was flavorful but light. Asparagus and Feta (Klug Farm Asparagus, Pistachio Crusted Feta, Jalapeño Honey, Olive Vinaigrette): A+ This absolutely blew us away. The combo was just unreal. The spicy honey, the decadence of the feta, just beyond flavorful. Definitely more feta than there is asparagus which we were not expecting -- not an issue, just a note. Green Garlic and Gruyere Pork Sausage w/ Braised Cannellini Beans, Hakuri Turnip, Crispy Kraut: A When in Chicago, get a big hunk of meat, right? The sausage was super flavorful and rich and paired very well with the kraut. I'm not big into beans but these were solid. Halibut and Clams w/ Asparagus, Grilled Spring Onion, Confit Potato, Nduja Sauce: A+ The other showstopper of the night. The nduja sauce was really what elevated everything else in the dish and just generally made the preparation unique.
