Decided to try a very local spot nearby - this winery isn't used to people coming by to taste wines, they are not commercial or high faluting in any sense of the word. So when I booked here with Chuck the long time grower and owner, I knew that we would be sitting in his home if they even let us through the door.
He's an 'old school' kind of guy, doesn't believe in charging more for his wine just because everyone else is doing it. Honestly, my friends and I felt like we hit the jackpot with a really incredible older guy, his long time gf and her son. They had bought and provided sandwiches and chips for our time there and we tasted almost everything under the roof.
He reminds me of the guy I work for, Sean Thackrey, as in only making wine that he feels is right to his palate. Saying that - I don't have the same palate as Chuck, but more importantly I respect the man and his way of living and being in this world. He has a second label for some white wines - listen here a 2012 Chardonnay - Brookwood, and a 2012 Brookwood Sauvignon Blanc. For the price of these wines I highly expected oxidation - too old - but not even close. Both of these wines were clean, crisp, refreshing, and I will open either one with anyone that's inclined to disagree. I am extremely impressed with these wines - the 2012 is 7 years old!! and most often doesn't taste that great after 2 or 3 years. Overwhelmed - I bought a 6 pack of each.
Then he has a Portfolio of reds he makes that's fairly unbelievable for his - idk 40 acres of land up on the hillside of Eastern Santa Rosa - bordering on St. Helena. He bought in 20+ years ago and planted these vineyards. At some point after the Sideways movie found it lucrative to change out the current varietal (I'm not saying it was Merlot) to planting Pinot Noir, makes much more as a grower selling to local producers. He also makes a Pinot that was not one of the wines that I personally favored, however, my friends, (at the time Lol), Brauny & Dana, enjoyed the Pinot Noir and bought some. In fact, we both took home close to 2 cases of wine because his prices are going back to the days when they delivered milk in glass bottles HA!
Great Prices - really fantastic. Love the personality - strong - and opinions on what's right on how you treat people. I loved this guy, my parents and most of your parents would love this guy. My favorites - and every wine he produces is at a substantially discounted er more pocket friendly price than every other winery in California - No Sh*t. It's a deal. Local restaurants and taprooms should consider picking up some of these wines - Incredible:
Malbec - much better than your avg Argentinian, good fruit and complexity
Petite Sirah - yes dense but also softer tannins, medium bodied, good dark berry fruit
Zinfandel
Syrah
then the Chard 2014 & Sauv Blanc 2012 were both excellent. He makes many more wines than this and I felt they were well structured and balanced. The fruit and overall flavors were not to my personal likings however my friends loved those wines. So it's we all like different things true - and those wines are balanced but not my personal favorites.
Ya Dig? Seek it out - going there may be difficult - if you do venture, PLEASE don't be a Dche - this is old school, great people, find what you like is the point. There is no other reason. Some guys go to a place that makes sours - they don't like sours but they go and review negative. I hate that. You have to go and understand that this place isn't made for you to come through - these people live here and are not reaching out for you to come through with no Tude Dude. read more
