I think we're switching our sushi and Asian food allegiance to Volcanic Sushi. I had a fantastic spicy tuna bowl last night that was seasoned so well and contained a huge amount of perfectly cut tuna. My only quibble was with the unpeeled cucumbers which were kind of sour. Located in the Publix shopping center on the corner, there's plenty of parking. I am in Gainesville for work and there's a chill in the air, so RAMEN TIME!!! I started with hot tea. Absolutely delicious. It was my first time here and I have to say it won't be my last. The sushi was tasty and beautiful to look at. It was like I was eating artwork. The volcano roll was delicious with a great balance of texture and flavor. The fresh tuna tartare on top made the roll my favorite of the night. We also ordered the house specialties roll platter and it was more sushi than we could eat!!! I have been here a few times now and have to say I am not impressed. On more than one visit I have pulled inch long bones out of my salmon, or scales off my tuna, plus the amount of rice on the rolls leaves me disappointed. Also, my meal was lacking so many ingredients (yes, I understand the shortages!) I would have ordered differently if I just had known exactly what all would be missing in each item. We tried it once in Haile plantation but we didn't think it was worth the drive to head all the way to Haile for it but when they made a 2nd location and it was nearby us and BIGGER, we were overjoyed!!! I've visited Volcanic S&S at least five times now, three for lunch and two for dinner, so I feel ready to recommend this small neighborhood restaurant for anyone with a yen for Japanese food. The menu is not huge but it is varied - cooked entrees, a diversity of sushi, and so forth - all the usual. What I like about Volcanic is the individual attention given to each order, the artistic touch applied to every dish, and the competent service. They're located at the tag end of Hunters' Crossing shopping center, which means parking is rarely a problem, but why anyone would want to eat at their outdoor tables (which would essentially mean eating with moving vehicles within a few feet of your food) is beyond me. Indoors is another story - the decor is gentle, muted colors, with both comfortable booths and 2-top and larger tables. But wait! Don't I come here for the food? Ah yes, the sushi - because that's what I almost always order. The fish is, as it must be, beautifully fresh and well cut. I've only eaten one roll (came with lunch), and that's part of the reason for my 4-star rating (vs 5) - once I got past the first slice, the roll fell apart. No hope of eating with chopsticks, and even with my fingers it crumbled as I tried to lift. Though they offer sashimi, the menu lacks my personal favorite: chirashi. (Makes me wonder if their sushi bar is well enough stocked to make a good presentation for this dish?) There is an extensive selection of reasonably priced sushi, 2 pieces per. Appetizers include gyoza, which we tried and easily gave 5 stars for their home-made "secret sauce." Spouse ordered a winner - Volcanic Salmon - which came sizzling on a small cast iron plate, a bed of vegetables topped with beautifully seasoned salmon. The dish is available with chicken as well. Presentation was beautiful, I definitely erred by not taking a picture. Dish came with rice - a HUGE bowl, much too much for any one person - and they offer your choice of white, brown, or sushi rice. Several kinds of saki and some basic wines round out the meal. I need t add that some staff could do with more training - on more than one occasion I asked a basic question (e.g. What is this - pointing to the pink and white things floating in my soup - server did not know, promised to ask, but never got back to me.) It's okay, I was just curious, but as a matter of course, I expect a server to be able to discuss any menu item or ingredient, or to get me someone who can. Lunch options are understandably fewer, and I remember being less satisfied with my choices. But Volcanic is in my neighborhood; prices are very reasonable and people are friendly. I have come several times since my first review and have had great food and experience since then. This has become my go to place for sushi.

Live close by and order often over many years, but never again. Spend well over $100 on sushi, also included a tip prior to receiving the order, only to have to wait more than 30 minutes past quoted time, edamame was made and ready before everything else, so it was cold by the time the sushi was done. Not to mention the fact that the hostess was also making sushi and was frequently going back and forth between behind the sushi bar and the hostess stand (handwashing anyone?). Took order back home and the sashimi was frozen, stringy, cut oddly and looked old. Ordered three different types of rolls, all fell apart when picking them up. Not to mention family having stomach aches the next day. Called today to explain what happened, only to be told I don't know my own phone number, that the rolls are supposed to fall apart, and to call back when I find the email order receipt, that they were too busy to find my order or help out in anyway. In this economy, I will never buy sushi from them again, would rather travel farther to the MANY sushi places that exist in Gainesville who actually care about the quality of their food and their customers. It was time once again for a nice meal at Volcanic sushi. The night I chose happened to be one where they were absolutely slammed. There has been a help wanted sign in the window of this restaurant for a little while now, so it does appear that they are short handed. This night had definite indications that they really need more people. Front staff were running around like mad trying to take orders and get orders out to people reasonably, while the sushi chefs made roll after roll after roll, it seemingly never ending. The back was also frantic, and there was one poor guy going back and forth between the sushi station and the back, helping out wherever he was needed. Hectic indeed! So, things were a bit delayed. No big deal in my book. I know that the food is good here, and worth the wait, so patience is well rewarded. My sushi was excellent, and later my thai curry was divine. The banter going back and forth behind the scenes was also fun to watch, because they had entered that zen state of having been crushed and things didn't matter anymore, just get the food out. I knew what they were going through, accepted it, and let them know that I was all good to go with the delays. Working with a kitchen crew when they are slammed instead of getting confrontational always gets the best results in my book! read more

Good food... but I've never been here without some kind of issue happening. Either they get my order wrong. Forgot about us sitting out side. Completely lost my call-in order. Or something else to make it a really frustrating experience. I really want to like this place as it's the closest sushi to me and it's not awful. But every time I decide to order from here I have to brace myself for some kind of delay or mistake. So I've been coming here less and less. This most recent trip here they didn't have my order. I showed them my call log on my phone to prove I had called the correct location. Never got an apology and when I asked how long it would take to re-order I was told "we'll, we're pretty busy." Sad...I haven't been here in months. This used to be my favorite restaurant in Gainesville. Today was a disappointment. The sushi was not good today. The rolls were falling apart and the fish was oddly warm. The case at the bar used to have frost and be very cold....not today. That scares me .... I hope I don't get sick. On top of that, three different staff members told me that another coworker called in sick and that is the reason for the slow service and the dirty tables. There were three dirty tables and a place at the bar that were dirty the entire time I was there. I ate at the bar in between dirty place settings. Unacceptable. When I finished my salad and my waiter brought me another drink he did not clear my dirty dishes. When I ordered something to go and my dinner plate was empty in front of me, that was not cleared either. My waiter was a nice guy but he and the other waiter obviously needed to be trained. The 80-year-old lady that works the front desk usually had more pep in her step than the two young waiters. It pains me to write this. It was never like this when Alex or Nester were here. I checked out Volcanic Sushi based on the great reviews. I went on a Friday night around 7 and there was a very small wait. The service was EXCELLENT. Which is why I am sad I have to leave 3 stars. They were so attentive and kind. They even offered to bring in the outdoor tables inside to accommodate those that did not want to sit in the cold. I definitely had higher expectations as far as the food. I ordered two sushi rolls, the Mark II ($12) and the Barbara ($10). Both rolls were good but nothing amazing. I would not go back and order them. I also ordered the Volcanic beef entree ($15). Honestly, it tasted super basic and the quantity was quite small for the price. The one thing that I enjoyed was the fried ice cream ($6). It was definitely made up for the mediocre meal. read more

Update: Just went back and ordered the "Volcanic Chicken" (like spicy chicken Teriyaki). OMG - That was delicious! It came out sizzling on a platter - absolutely delicious. My niece is gluten and dairy free - and I recently learned that they have great options! They have a gluten free soy sauce that was wonderful! I would recommend the udon noodles if you're gluten free! (Noodles are buckwheat and the sauce uses the gluten free soy sauce). My husband got a platter of sashimi and it looked absolutely beautiful. It is called the Mellisa bites and it reads anddd I quote fried sushi rice balls topped with tuna tartare, black tobillo and drizzled with eel sauce Ummm the hot fried mess you see in the picture is what I received, and if I wasn't in a hurry I would have turn around and gave it back to them. I mean it looks like little fried turds and for 12 bucks I should have had a damn burger in the bag or something. Recently went to Volcanic Sushi and Sake with a friend and it was really good. Everything from the wait staff to the food was all really tasty and was some of the better sushi that I have had here in Gainesville! Went in on a Thursday night around 7:30 and the place was pretty busy. We had to wait no more than 10 minutes for them to clear a table off and we sat down. Our waiter was super attentive and came by and took our drink orders and then gave us some insights on the menu. I was really hungry when I arrived here and decided to get 3 rolls. After I saw how big they were I ended up only eating two. I got the Spider Roll, Dragon Roll and then asked the waiter which was his favorite so I ended up with the a new roll, I forget the name but it had fried octopus, and was wrapped in I believe cucumber and fried. It was really really good. The sushi rolls are super fresh and taste amazing. They are also super big and come with a ton of fresh toppings. Also, I loved the fact that we ordered and within 15 minutes the food was ready. This place is super modern and they have cool tablets they use to take the orders and even you pay with the tablet. The only reason for the 4 stars was the price was kinda expensive for Gainesville. The rolls were all great but kinda more than I wanted to spend. It is not as expensive as Dragonfly but just more than I would have expected. I will for sure be back to try more amazing sushi and other menu items! read more

Remains the top place to get sushi in Gainesville, in my opinion. The atmosphere felt more upscale than their Haile location, but the prices weren't overpriced despite the upscale feel. The service was friendly and my table was checked on frequently. And of course the sushi was delicious!! We tried a curry, that I can't remember the name that was very delicious.
