I got the Hometown Hero sandwich, which was really fantastic. Mortadella, Genoa salami, provolone, garlic aïoli with some nice fresh lettuce and tomato. It was on an absolutely perfect hoagie roll from local bakery Union Loafers, and it was one of the best sandwiches I've eaten in a while. In addition to the sandwich, I picked up some beautiful beef jerky, an "end" of mortadella, and a couple of other goodies. Service was quick and friendly and it was a really great stop and I really like that they do not use sodium nitrite in their products, they are all natural! And very tasty. This was the first time visiting this place, although I've passed it many times. Shame on me! I was missing out on some real deliciousness. read more

Stopped for sandwiches to bring with us when we drive out of St. Louis tomorrow. The food tour in front & wonderful menu were appealing. The market is family owned on the Hill, since 1902. They gave samples which were delicious. We ordered a prosciutto Panino with fresh mozzarella tomatoes, arugula, sun-dried tomatoes pesto on ciabatta. Even if you buy Volpi products in other stores a trip to the real, original Volpi on The Hill is necessary. This location has the top-of-the-line products, can handle special request, high volume orders, and speak directly to the ingredients and process used in all of their products. Favorites are Genoa, Prosciutto, Sopresseta, Spicy Copa, Olive Salad, really all of it! Buy more than you need, you will be happy to eat on these for days and days! I picked a winner for review #1800. Obviously I've had plenty of meats and charcuterie from Volpi but I've never gone in during lunchtime and had a fresh sandwich that they made. I don't get out for lunch a whole lot but on this day...I did. I ordered the Prosciutto Panino (Heritage Prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, arugula and sundried tomato pesto on toasted ciabatta hoagie). It is simple but great! The prosciutto is flavorful and salty but has a slight sweetness. The mozzarella is creamy and it's all set off by the sweetness of the sundried tomato pesto. I'm not sure where Volpi is buying the ciabatta but it's so fresh and makes the sandwich. I picked up a container of the herb marinated fresh mozzarella while I was there. It's delicious. I can't wait to work my way through the sandwich menu at Volpi. I'll be back! read more

Why don't I see this place mentioned more when people discuss the best sandwiches in St. Louis? It's the bomb dot com. Though, I suspect they aren't often lumped in with the other popular local sandwicheries of St. Louis because they err on the side of smaller, "craftsman-like" sandwiches and are a Italian meats corporation with national distribution, so they may lose points for "charming, unique, and small-scale." However, I believe this location is around the original deli storefront on The Hill that started their salami enterprise, so they definitely gain points for "authentic and local." The sandwiches are very high quality, using fresh sliced meats and incorporating other local favorites like Union Loafer's bread. I split 2 sandwiches with my partner, the Coppa Panino and Feeling Felino - both fantastic, balanced, and filling. The coppa was more interesting with fig butter and brie, but I preferred the more classic felino on ciabatta. They also have a small selection of other high quality Italian goods and picked up a container of very delicious, earthy green olives that elevate my martini's ten fold. More people should give them a shot, especially because they're a local St. Louis corporation. read more

Stumbled into Volpi a few years ago while driving by after running errands, hungry and needing something as soon as possible to bring home for lunch. 3 years later, in a city neighborhood surrounded by endless sandwich shop options it is by far our most craved and visited shop for sandwiches. The ingredients used have consistently been extremely fresh and never wavier. The Hometown Hero is hands down my husband and I's favorite. We've had every sandwich on their menu but return for the Hero time and time again. The staff is so inviting and on the ball making every order in front of you. I love browsing their quaint selection of Italian grocery items for recipes at home or little snacks while waiting for our order. They almost always offer sample packs of their meats in the bag before we leave. This place is the bomb.com. If you are coming to The Hill you need to come here and go crazy. I recommend you get a sandwich first. All are great but the Spicy Italian is on a panini press and the cheese hits you just right. Then hit up the meat and cheese display. There was a free sample of cheese available so try it out. They are on the counter. Also in the bottom right there was a small meat selection in freezer bags available if you want a small sample of meats at a reasonable price. THE place for Salsiccia in St. Louis. As someone who's tried them all, I can tell you that you won't find any better than at Volpi. The classic mild sausage is deliciously rich in fennel, while the spicy version is not really 'hot' so much as 'loaded with zip'. There are other varieties too, and since they make them right there, I try to stop in once a week to get them fresh. Every bite of Volpi meats is a sensation. Each time I visit, I have a list for my particular recipes, but I always go 'off-list'. The choices are endless: pepperoni, pancetta, rotola, coppa, salami, sopressata, prosciutto, cured meats of all variety, and so much more. Each one tastes more spectacular than another, and all at such reasonable prices! They also have a cheese case with some beautiful selections. I have yet to find a better price on Provel anywhere (unless you need a 5-pound box of it). Real Provel, not the packaged imitations you find in some groceries -- Those aren't the same. (You want Hoffman's original brand, not stuff whose main ingredients are part-skim milk and flavorings). And yes, if you freeze it for 20 minutes it's very easy to shred. Recently I purchased their recipe/history book. A great little read with some tasty ideas! They've been in business for well over 100 years and know well what they are doing. Everyone that works there is super-friendly (even during crazy holiday rushes) and makes me feel that they 'want' me as their customer ("A third of a pound of pepperoni? Sure, no problem!"). Being a veteran of entertaining & being entertained, I feel strongly about sharing our experience with our Volpi prepared Christmas night charcuterie board. Not only was it expertly arranged with their special Italian dried meats, cheeses, nuts, dried figs and mozzarella salad, but was the star of the show with our guests. We stayed with fun pickup food year, all good, but all the selections on the charcuterie board virtually disappeared. Although crowed Christmas Eve morning, I was in and out of the shop on The Hill on no time. Many residents were visiting on the sidewalk, enjoying their Christmas holiday, adding to my enjoyment. There's a large place in my heart for Volpi's. I rank it up there as St. Louis' best salumeria! Sure you can get their products at some of the local grocery stores, but their storefront on The Hill is the only place where you can get their goods freshly sliced. Genoa salami is my absolute favorite. Once you have it, you'll never want hard salami again. I love to get it sliced paper thin. So delicious! You can also get some of the other Italian treats like sopressa, coppa, pancetta and mortadella - but the genoa salami is still my absolute favorite. Another thing I like to do is get cheese freshly cut off the wheel. Fontina and the blue cheese are my go-to's for this. I can't tell you why it tastes better off the wheel, it just does. Finally, if you're an olive lover like me, you have to try (what I refer to as) their olive salad. Olives mixed with oil, seasonings and celery - best eaten at room temperature for full flavor. I told my mom that, if I ever land on Death Row, I want this part of my last meal. It's that good! read more

Haha The run down: Volpi Salami and Meat Company has been around in the Hill area for over 100 hundred years. They make all sorts of different specialty meats, cheeses, and prepackaged pastas. The space is small but has insane amount of assortments of stuff. They leave a sampling tray out for those who want to try before they buy. I can't say this was a good idea considering Jason and I alone kept "sampling" their goodies. There are several different types of meats. The meats we got are called Mild Sopressa salami and prosciutto. They both taste really good! It's cheaper to buy them from the actual store than the prepackaged kind at Schnuck's. The crispy pancetta was a phenomenal addition and smoked gouda and avocado or two of my favorite things. The bread was soft. I hate my bread tears up the roof of your mouth! No worries with this soft pillowy deliciousness. While you're there it would be a crime to leave without picking up some of their handmade products that are shipped all over the world, many if which you can't find anywhere else. Always looking for artisan butcher shops and discovered Volpi products by chance. They Make all sorts of cured meats. The one that caught my eye however was the Fuet; a Catalan style cured sausage. Good flavor, salinity and fattiness. Great with potatoes in a stew or eaten by itself as a snack. Will definitely need to try a bunch more of their other goods read more

Friend #2 - That's ok, just don't look at it. It was like chewing on some of the best jerky EVER. If you've only had the pre-sliced stuff, I suggest getting some more recently sliced stuff as it does seem to make a difference (or at least a percieved one.) They sell more random bits that aren't typically available at the local grocery store or Trader Joe's like end cuts and prosciutto bones which definitely come in handy for soups and whatnot. It is a carnivore's dream...nice and clean, redolent of spices and slices, meatstuffs hanging hither and yon. And everything bodacious. Really. An admixture of Li'l Abner bodaciousness, with just a hint of Bill and Ted. I was amazed to find their products in Birmingham (World Market) and Huntsville (Publix), but that was nothing next to visiting the facility in person. If you don't have fun whilst on The Hill, well...you're not fun. I've had nothing here, or brought to me from here, or dreamed about while on the way here, that I didn't pretty much love, but two of my faves are: "Bresaola" - one of the more uncommon meats, as compared to, say...salami...pepperoni. It's air-dried beef...lucky air. They recommend drizzling it with EVOO and sprinkling it with Parmigiano-Reggiano, but I've never stopped eating it long enough to prepare it. Secondly, the fennel-rich sausage I devoured and later determined must be "Un Mondo Dry Salsiccia." The fennel truly makes it...too many pizzas, sauces, and sausages have foolishly forsaken this little, beloved seed. The Hill is a great area for walking, provided you're not suffering the Hadean temperatures that are currently hot. Take the time to look Volpi over, buy the things I told you were good, and then pick up a few more things. And sample something; that's why delis were invented. The person fortunate enough to babysit the pets whilst I raced Volpiwards were rewarded with products therefrom...and elsewhere. Enjoy. read more
