Alec was so knowledgeable about all the offerings and was so accommodating to all of our requests for the different samples. He had great suggestions for pairings and we ended up buying the perfect combo of oil and balsamic. I loved the way we got to try to the oils with the tiny spoons. I am completely in love with their concept of refilling cooking oils & vinegars containers. I decided to try the garlic extra virgin oil and the aroma from it was delicious! I purchased the standard size and the stopper. The price was about $24 ish dollars. When you return for a refill, if you take your bottle it's a 20% discount. You truly can't beat that! Being able to support a local business, save the planet from more waste but get delicious oils to cook it a go for me. Will be coming back for sure and with my container. There are so many wonderful places to visit in downtown Ventura, but I have only taken the time to review a select few that stand out above the rest! Of them, our favorite is Vom Fass - not just because of the amazing selection of flavorful drinks and oils, which are always fun to sample, but because of George! He can go months or years without seeing my kids, but as soon as they pop their heads in the door, he makes hem feel like the only people in the world. He teaches them about oils and gives samples liberally to help them discover their taste preferences. And because of him, both kids can easily tell you theirs. I can't believe that I've walked past Vom Fass so many times without going in. I've really been missing out! My boyfriend and I decided to walk in and take a look around, and I'm so glad we did. All of the employees were so friendly and knowledgeable about the many products they offer. We tasted a few of the olive oils and balsamic vinegars. Our favorites were the lemon and basil olive oils. I also really liked the fig chili balsamic vinegar. George was kind enough to show us around the various liquors that they offer. I tried two of the tequilas and was pleasantly surprised by how smooth and delicious they were. We ended up leaving with a lemon olive oil and maletti balsamic vinegar. They paired well and were absolutely delicious with some pieces of bread fresh from the oven. Although their products are on the more expensive side, I really believe that you are paying for high quality. Definitely stop by and taste some of their offerings if you get a chance! read more

What a find! We've walked by them before, not realizing what we were missing. The shop is a combo of tasting / purchasing options for olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and whiskey. The latter is segregated off with signs indicating 21 and up only. Walls lined with crocks of the liquids are featured. One of the associates assisted us by pouring tiny spoon samples of oils and vinegars. Once we decided what we wanted to buy, we had the choice of different containers. You do have to buy the bottles. They come in a variety of styles and price points. A Yelp check-in provided $5 off a $30 purchase. Nice! We selected one Bear's Garlic olive oil as a gift, plus cherry, and calamansi flavors of balsamic for our own kitchen. I used to like shopping at this store and even recommended it to few friends. I wanted to support their business. It all changed today!! Today I went to the store to spend my $100 birthday gift. The young female staff was helping another customer in the tasting area. While her customer was looking the the products making a decision, I handed her their most expensive bottle of wine to put aside for me while I was looking around giving her time and space to attend to the customer. The guy purchased a few items then decided to taste their olive oil and balsamic. I was in the same area watching and waiting. Of course, she totally ignored me, she could have easily engaged me at least partially, but I didn't mind. She was not quick enough to assess the situation and handle it better. Here is the great part, after a lengthy sampling and tasting, she took her time at length to pick a few empty bottles spent more slow time to pour in balsamic and olive oil in each, she took her time to clean overflown bottles, labeled them, tagged them, added ribbons to each bottle, wrapped them, packed them, added ribbon again while chatting away. Ignoring me as if i was not standing there waiting for my turn, not a word to acknowledge I was waiting. After a good 20 minutes or more she approached me without even saying thank you for waiting, just asking what I wanted. This was rude and totally unprofessional!! The management needs to be reminded, two doors down there is a perfectly managed olive oil store, a few steps away there is another fantastic wine store not to mention Trader Joe's and Costco nearby. In this fierce competition, customer service is a key factor. I know I will not go back there. I hope we can get a refund for the gift card! read more

Store manager Josh was our tour guide and sample host yesterday. He was very knowledgeable about every product in the store. I appreciate that. Josh was happy to provide a sample of anything we showed an interest in. These are very high-end oils, vinegars, spirits, spices, wines and more. We settled on the fig & chili vinegar, and some delicious sounding Pinot Noir (which we were unable to sample), but Josh's description was good enough for me. I was happy to hear you can return with your clean used vinegar bottle to get a discounted refill once it is gone. Clever. Josh spoke of the German craftsmanship behind the product. I like that too. It is a very tidy, well organized little gift shop. We did the Absinth experience too, again another history lesson from Josh.....I am truly a history nerd and I loved that he had a backstory for everything. Of course I already knew the history and background of Absinth, but the others that were listening in did not, and they were very entertained. I recommend this shop. read more

Came in looking for a xmas gift and found pretentious, rude and all around bad customer service. I would have liked shopping here a lot but too bad. They also would not allow me to view the spirits section because I had my 1 year old in a stroller. An employee barked at me that it was company policy. I actually love this store and I'm disappointed after reaching out to the owner with a letter to explain my frustration on Sunday February 6 that no one responded. We were with our 2 guests from Montana and they are not familiar with our indoor mask policy. My friends love whiskey and oils so I thought this would be a great place to have them visit. Three of us walked in with our masks on and our friend did not. A woman said you must put your mask on and our friend said okay I'll just wait outside. I prodded my friend to come in so reluctantly he did. As he was walking in he was putting on his mask (no one was in the store) when he reached the back he was adjusting his mask because he has hearing aides and a male employee walks back and says, "have a good rest of the day you can leave!" I said, "what, are you asking us to leave?" He replied, yes have a good day! I was horrified and embarrassed for me and our out of state friends! I said I would never return and that they lost an amazing amount of money and potential new customers. I was hoping to hear back from the owner, but never did so I felt compelled to write a review...not about the products, but the rude service. I love bringing my out of town guests to downtown Ventura to support local businesses and to show them our unique shops. Sad to say this was not a good ending. read more

We sampled several products and found it hard to decide because everything was so flavorful. I ended up buying a star plum vinegar (which honestly, I eat off the spoon!) and some scotch for my guy. Nifty little German oil and vinegar store on Main Street in Ventura. The products are in nice barrels on display, and each has a little tap that you can get samples from. Was fun to try all the different samples, and you can even sample their exotic liqueurs, including absinthe. I ended up trying the limoncello and a dark chocolate liqueur and some different vinegars. I got a star blueberry balsamic vinegar and orange infused olive oil, which I think will taste delicious in a spinach salad. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and they are happy to educate you or give you samples. The liquor samples came in a cute shot glass and it was nice that it wasn't just a paper Dixie cup. I checked this place out one day on a drive back to LA. It's a very unique shop and quality comes to mind when I think of the products I saw here. Wide selection of cooking oils and balsamic vinegars as you walk in. They have a good wine selection. I noticed they carry the wine with the Italian Sangiovese grapes which I happen to like. They carry craft whiskey and have a whiskey tasting bar in the store. Wide selection of scotches, bourbons and rye whiskeys. I tried the American Bourbon and purchased a small bottle ($20). This place is awesome! Stumbled across it by accident when we were trying to find a bathroom...ended up tasting various liquors and purchasing one! They do small batch alcohols ranging from common items like vodka, tequila, and scotch to more specialized alcohol such as absinthe, limoncello, and grappa. They let you taste before you buy which is very helpful. They also sell in a wide range of bottle sizes--you could buy 100ml of something all the way up to a full size bottle. The staff was so friendly, knowledgable, and patient, that I ended up purchasing a bottle of single malt scotch for my brother's upcoming 21st birthday. They were able to gift wrap and write a personalized message on the bottle. Now he will have something far more custom and personal than I could ever get at a big box store. Both employee today were extremely rude and have no idea what customer service is. I'm 29, but i look rather young, as soon as i step in the shop I was asked if I knew anything about their shop, I say no, because i've never been there before and the lady then says "well did you just come here to use the bathroom?!" in an extremely bitchy tone. Whatt?! NOO I actually came here for oils I was going to use to make my herbal body oils. I felt extremely uncomfortable. I literally just step in this store and they think i'm just some kid trying to use the bathroom. CUSTOMER LOST! I live down the street. I can use my own bathroom, then I step closer to where they sell there liquors I guess because the man says "YOU CANT COME ANY CLOSER WITHOUT ID" He said it twice without time for me to even respond. I showed ID, but i was done with the shop and left. I felt extremely attacked, because I looked young they thought I didn't have money to spend on their precious oils?!?! The employees here are ageist and rude, and are only looking to sell to rich looking old people. Thanks for nothing. read more

I used to frequent this store back when it was located in west lake village. I'd schlep all the way up the hill. I was so sad to see it closed but was so delighted that it relocated not to Santa Monica as was the original plan but down the road in Ventura lovely old town. If you try this place out, you must try the calamansi vinegar as well as their star vinegars. (You could drink them. I do actually. Add a few tablespoons vinegar to ice and water. Amazingly delicious and refreshing drink.) the calamansi is wonderful on fish, chicken or vegetables! Their rose liqueur is amazing as well as their 25 yr Armagnac. Try it out!
