Take the tour! It's $5 per person, and it's a great way to spend five dollars. You'll visit the bottling area, see how they store the wines, and maybe even hear a creepy ghost story or two. (Apparently, there are ghosts at Von Stiehl, which makes sense because if I were a ghost, I would post up at a winery, too.) Tours happen May through October. Afterward, stop into the main building for some wine tasting, which is also decently priced. I didn't used to think I was a fan of Midwestern wine, but I love the wine at Von Stiehl. I tasted a Cabernet, a Rose, a cherry liqueur and a few others, and I loved all of them. They also make ciders. I had the pleasure of tasting the Von Stiehl hard cherry and hard apple ciders at different restaurants around the Green Bay area. Amazing! They come in a bottle like wine, so they are super shareable. This place looks like a house and feels like a home inside. There are a few places to sit and enjoy your wine, as well as a big bar where the wine tasting takes place. Or you can take your wine outside to their outdoor seating when the weather is nice. We wanted to find a winery to stop and enjoy a glass while visiting Sturgeon Bay. We stopped here on the way back to Green Bay. Didn't know they were one of the oldest wineries in Wisconsin. Lots of good options to choose from, there is something for everyone. Not a wine drinker? They also serve hard cider here as well. You can get that either on tap or by the bottle. What is really nice about this winery is their location right on a canal adjacent to Lake Michigan I'm a beautiful, historic building. Beautiful views and very cool place outside and inside to enjoy your treats. It looks like live music and events are hosted in the back during the busy season. Prices are very reasonable and the staff were super friendly. We would be back, even the little town was fun to explore. read more

This is a great place to visit if you are going through Algoma! We ended up buying 6 bottles of wine and having a tasting of 8 wines each at the counter. Their wines are unique and delicious -- highly recommended! Our tasting server, Erin, was very nice and knowledgeable about all the wines. She answered all of our questions and helped us with the undertones and flavors of each wine. They have a nice space and we're limiting it to 20 guests, which felt safe. The building is a historical site and right on the river, so it's super pretty! read more

What a fun stop in Algoma! Be sure that you check out the patio area and take a walk along the river/lake path. There are a ton of different wine options and wine decor--definitely a solid place to kick off your Door County Wine tour. Also a wonderful place to pick up holiday gifts/souveniers for your WI travels. I also appreciated that this place opened at 10am on a Sunday (because you can't drink all day unless you start in the morning--am I right?). My husband and I found this winery 28+ years ago and I came back today for my 55th birthday. I was helped with Ariana and Shellie, who were delightful and very helpful. The wine is amazing and very vast in taste and texture. I highly recommend coming in for a tasting and leaving with a case. I couldn't do a separate review for the Von Stiehl Cider Bar, so I am adding to my review. Valerie at the Cider Bar was just as friendly and helpful as everyone at the Winery. OK--I've been coming to Von Stiehl longer than I can remember. I remember eating wine crackers while the adults tasted. They have a pretty decent selection of wines on the tasting menu, and depending on what's open or recently rotated, they're sometimes able to make recommendations or substitutions if they have a bottle open behind the bar. I like that there is something for everyone--I prefer sweeter wines but the rest of my family prefers more dry wines and we can all taste something we like. With the number of years I've been coming here, I have old favorites, but I also enjoy trying new wines and usually discover something new to love each time I visit. I recently visited Von Stiehl on 8/6/24 and the winery is nice and they have some good wines in the older categories but very disappointed with their tasting policy if you purchase wines. I spend $548 on wine there and they didn't have the courtesy to waive the tasting fee. I have traveled all over the country visiting wineries and have never seen a winery that would not not waive the tasting fee if you purchased a bottle, 3 bottles, or a certain bottle count or dollar amount spent, almost all have guidelines around it. The tasting is meant to draw you in so you can sample wines and like some enough to purchase at their full retail price and give positive word of mouth. I will never go back to Von Stiehl again and should have told the employee to forget the purchase when he did not waive the nominal tasting fee. Other Door County wineries waive their tasting fee with a purchase, I bought at some other wineries as well. Poor business is all I can say. Elzie read more

I'm surprised I haven't reviewed this winery before. Although there seem to be a lot of places I haven't reviewed yet. Maybe I'll get caught up this year. This is the first stop on our annual Door County Winter Fest weekend trip. The space is beautiful, very classy looking with lots of dark colored wood and fancy furniture. There is also a second floor that looks perfect for private parties and group tastings. You are given up to 6 samples at no charge and most of the wine is under $20. I don't think I sampled one that I didn't like. One of the wines is made with cherry brandy distilled in Milwaukee at Great Lakes Distillery! Yes, it was awesome! The staff is also friendly and knowledgeable. You can find their wines at larger liquor stores, but I think you should visit the winery to explore all of the options you won't find in a store. I love getting to visit von Stiehl whenever I'm back in Wisconsin. They're the oldest winery in Wisconsin, and they've left a lot of history in the building while still being modern and fun. They offer some of their most popular options as complimentary tastings, and then you can pay $9 to taste five of their premium wines, or $5 to taste 5 of their regular wines. The sever we had on the most recent visit, Erin, was very nice but talked very fast so it was hard sometimes to catch all the details. They do tend towards sweeter, fruit-based wines of a lot of their wines, so if you're not a sweet wine fan this might not be the place for you. They do have some heavier reds (their pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon are both delicious), but those are definitely in the minority. If you can take the tour, do it. You get to learn about the history of the building and the winery, and you also get to see where they ferment and store the wine, plus where it's bottled. It's $4 for the tour but it's very informative. I've done it twice, and had two different tour guides so I learned a lot. They do have wine clubs that seem pretty reasonable, and one nice thing that they do (or at least, used to do), is that if you stop in and you either biked there or rode a motorcycle, they'll ship you your wine for free (since you can't carry too many bottles home!). They also do special events and concerts in the summer that look super fun. read more

On a whim during our travels through Door County, my son and I on our first trip to Green Bay stopped in for some wine tasting at Von Stiehl. I am from Northern California, about an hour from the Napa wine country. Trips to wineries there can be an exercise in elitism and pretension. This was the complete opposite of that! The building was beautiful and it's location was a stone's throw away from the coast of Lake Michigan. They had a wide variety of wines to taste and had two flights available for pairings with cheese or their handmade chocolate truffles. Both were three healthy pours of wine paired excellently for a very reasonable price. My son did the chocolate pairing with their reds and I did the chocolate with their sweet wines. I can only imagine that the cheese pairings would have been equally satisfying. Many of the wines, especially my sweets were flavored with the local fruits. The chocolates were unique and exquisite and were paired perfectly with their wines to bring out the best of both. The Saturday afternoon we were there was about an hour before they closed and they were short staffed but you never would have known it by their cheerful and friendly demeanor. We couldn't afford to purchase any of the wines even though we would have loved to but there was no pressure or push back for this. It was a wonderful way to spend some time on our Door County adventure and well worth the visit!! read more

Patrons range from locals to visitors from around the country and other nations. There are two types of wine tasting. For six non-premium wines the tasting is free and there is a charge for the higher end premium wines. You make your selections on a wine list and they'll let you sample in order with an explanation of every wine. Buying a case leads to more benefits and for those hanging in the area there are many types parings during the week. They source their grapes from California and Washington to make some beautiful wine. They age a few of them in Gamba oak from France, which is pricey, but removes most of the tannins for a smooth finish. Great stop on my fiance and my Door County weekend getaway, and there is a brewery next door (Ahnapee) if you're trying all the local offerings. When we entered, the woman at the bar said we could shop around or see her for a tasting at any time. "Oh, tasting right away then?" Girl, don't play. We were able to select 5 or 6 (there were a lot of tastings, it gets hazy, but it's a fair number) to try, and I didn't have one bad taste! I'm a sweeter white wine drinker; the orange muscat and the Tinseltown were delicious. I eventually ended up purchasing a bottle of their Apfel cider that was really flavorful and crisp. Hubs is the opposite palate and prefers full reds; he went with a bottle of the Sylvester to take home. The shop was elegant looking, clean, and the staff were all so friendly and helpful. we have been coming to von stiehls for almost 30 years and much has changed from the free wine tastings to the different wines available. We always get a case which is a bonus getting the 13th bottle for free. the wine tasting range from $6 to $12 depending on which wines you select. I do think that if you buy a case of wine you should get your wine tasting either of no cost or a reduced cost. That is really my only complaint it may seem petty but i spend $250 on wine i would think that they could throw in the $9.00 wine tasting, like i said i have been loyal to this winery since the mid 90s and there should be a little something extra for long term customers. the reason i have to even taste wines is because they have so many new offerings that i want to sample and I can always find 13 bottles, some are the standards i always get, bounce, niagara, crimsom royale to name a few..but this time I did get many new wines!!! Stop in to experience a winery where the wines are really quite good, the variety is impressive, the atmosphere is nice and the people are friendly. It can be busy on the weekends but if it's your first time, take the cellar tour anyway. It's worth it. Really quite impressive for a small town. It's Wisconsins first winery. Yes, yes, yes! This winery is a vacationer's dream. We were greeted by one of their "bartenders" who handed us their pamphlet of available wines. She very happily told us we could sample 5 (or 6?) wines for free and then were welcome to purchase additional glasses if we wanted. WINE FOR FREE, people. I ended up trying a wide variety of wines, thanks to the bartender. She helped me pick some sweet and some dry wines, while also mixing up reds and whites. I really liked the blueberry, barrel-aged cherry, and also Oktoberfest. Everything else was pretty standard and there weren't any that I disliked (which is saying something coming from me). It seems like they made a smart move by giving the free samples because I ended up buying the Oktoberfest, the regular cherry wine, and some closeout white wine (Fish Tale?) for $5 a bottle. They have a discount that gets you money off depending on how many bottles you buy (for example, $1 off 3 bottles, $3 off 5 bottles). I LOVED this place and will definitely return next time I'm in Door County. It's well worth a visit. read more

First off, you couldn't find a cuter small town than Algoma. Right on Lake Michigan, it is a very walkable "hometown". From the Lake, follow the Ahnapee River just a few blocks to the Von Stiehl Winery. A beautifully restored building with a lot of history. Please take the tour if you get a chance. Hear wonderful stories of the building, former wine maker Doc Stiehl, and current wine makers at the "Over There" Production Facility. Erin was my guide and she was both informative and fun. It is evident that she and her co workers enjoy their jobs at the winery. What started as a hobby in a basement that made four fruit wines, has now become over twenty different wine varie made in multiple styles. There is a complimentary tasting at the bar for six samples. You have an option to pay $5 for a tasting of five of their more impressive offerings; which is a real steal. The Von Stiehl wine makers make very thoughtful and interesting wines. And some of the names are just too cute for words. I walked off with several more bottles than I intended on buying. The more you buy, gives you discounts. Joining the Case Club, gives you discounts. And there were sales all over the place. So I didn't stand a chance of walking out of there with just two bottles like I thought. I don't think a visit to this family run business will disappoint anyone. read more
