We stopped in for a cider tasting on a weekday mid-afternoon in early June and it was pretty quiet so we had no wait. Staff were amazing and enthusiastically shared information about the ciders. I love that they use apples and other ingredients from Washington Island- hence the name of the business! They are doing some creative things here, and the lavender and hops varieties were particularly unique and I enjoyed both. All their ciders are dry which we loved and the fermentation process they use produces a light carbonation. I really like how they do the flights in an ala-carte pricing structure which lets customers truly create a fully customized flight vs getting locked into one tier of choices. We bought a bottle to take home as a gift and also noticed the packaged options of local snacks if people want to have some cheese and crackers or similar to go with their cider. We are officially adding Orchard Island Cider to our spots to return to on our next vacation here in Door County! read more

Hard apple cider, pear cider, cherry cider ... the gang's all here. Island Orchard Cider makes hard cider from dwarf apples and pears they grow on Washington Island, Wisconsin. It's all local and made with love, and you can taste it in every sip. I visited the taproom for a cider tasting. You can pick four different ciders, and I left the choice up to the people pouring. They chose a brut apple cider, apple lavender, apple cherry and apple ginger. All of the ciders were refreshing, but I think I loved the cherry cider the most. I mean, there's something about Door County cherries! You need to put as many cherries as you can into your body when you're on the peninsula, so this is a fun way to get your recommended daily allowance of Door County stone fruit. Island Orchard has patio seating, but I visited during the winter and there was snow on the ground, so the warm taproom was much more comfortable. I love cider, and I love cider that isn't super duper sweet so... I really enjoyed this place because many of their ciders are dry, which was exciting! My husband and I stopped in after spending some time at Newport State Park and I tried a flight of their delicious ciders. We stopped in late on a Sunday afternoon on our first day in Door County. The staff was super friendly and helpful with our selections. One couple got a flight of four and we got a flight of five ciders. The prices varied depending on the type of cider but all were reasonable and good size samples. We grabbed a table out back since the seating in front was full. I really liked the brut cider - very straight forward compared to the other fancier ciders we sampled. None of these taste like the apple pie commercial ciders that the big companies sell. Thank goodness. Glad to see cider shops like this popping up in more places. I greatly appreciate this dry style, and their variations on the theme are bang on. Each option reads exactly as you'd expect in the best way possible. The cider is a clean, balanced, well-made base. Then, each style adds 1 bit of interest without overly complicating it: The lavender hits you firmly with lavender without going overboard; the hopped has pronounced citrusy American hop character but doesn't completely dominate the cider beneath. For a souvenir gift, they're great as well. The packaged cider comes in resealable 750 mL bottles that present so well! It was a chilly rainy day in door and we were driving by and seen the sign so we stopped. What a cool place they have a smallish tasting room and then a larger space where they have the tanks and equipment that has some seating also. It was pretty crowded they have about a dozen different ciders to taste. Not being the biggest hard cider fan we opted for 5 tasting. It was quite an eye opener this was not the stuff I'm use to in a bottle these. We were complex and interesting and very enjoyable. The have some light food parring available as well. We ended up with some cider and vinegar that I can't wait to try. I'm sure this will be a regular stop now on our annual trip up to Door. read more

This place is a real gem. I found it online when doing some research for activities during our week-long stay in Sister Bay. Their website highlighted that their hard ciders were made in the French style and being a wine guy, this sounded like a place I would enjoy. Seven of us stopped by on a Monday afternoon in early June and had the place to ourselves for most of our visit. Our helpful host gave us a bit of information about the product then proceeded to pour their 4 primary ciders. We started with the crisp and refreshing Brut, followed by a second apple cider flavored with a hint of fresh oak (our favorite), followed by a pear then a cherry cider. All were good, refreshing and delicious. We ended up buying 6 bottles (which meant we got 5% off plus a free 6-bottle canvas tote). We spent maybe 30 -45 minutes visiting but if it was busy (like California wineries) it could probably take a bit longer. And, even better, was the fact that THE TASTING WAS FREE. As a special bonus and because of our interest, we even got a couple of tastes of some of the special reserve ciders ($3 more per bottle-still a bargain). This place is definitely worth a stop when in the area-it's unique, and a great deal too with the ciders prices at only $12.99. read more

Kind of disappointed that because of COVID you can not taste. Window and to-go service only. This is odd since most places seem to have no idea what COVID is, so it was also a pleasant surprise. Oaked cider is very interesting as it picks up hints of the barrels it's aged in. We brought home a bottle of the non-oaked Brut and a Pear cider. Highly recommended. I wish I could love this place more, because there are so few cideries in Door County (I think this is the only one), but my experiences here fell short. We came in on a sunny afternoon and the place was pretty crowded. They boast free tastings which I found to be extremely generous (I would be prepared to pay for a good experience). However, I felt that the schpiel was delivered too quickly and the pours were tiny (just about one sip's worth) with nothing to cleanse the palette. I felt that I didn't get a really good taste of each cider and nothing really stood out to me. I did enjoy the hop one which was more unique to the cidery and could not be purchased nearby. Overall, I honestly felt a little rushed and would have rather paid to have a nice afternoon doing a tasting and enjoying the area rather than being in and out in less than 15 minutes. If you're here to purchase and just get a taste of everything they have to offer, this is a fine place to stop by. read more

This place is super cute. It's got this rustic type feel to it and the staff all have this vibe I can't really place. It just lends itself to this great atmosphere that somehow makes me want to buy cider. The bottles are all really cute as well, they either got those pop off tops, or corks. I love this type of stuff. I wish I had been able to stay for a flight, but I was just passing through so I just hopped in, had a look around, and purchased a couple bottles for myself. I'm not generally a cider person but the fine folks at Island Orchard Cider made me a believer! We enjoyed everything we tried but favorites were the lavender and the oak aged. Their retail offerings are also spectacular and we did take a few with us as well as a maple vinegar. A guy who works there was on his break and was just splashing the vinegar on potato chips! This review is a bit of a tough one for me. I typically don't touch bars or breweries unless there is a pretty strong food component, but given I had a full meal at Island Cider I felt compelled to write it up. Unfortunately for me I don't at all have an appreciation for cider, but I do have an appreciation for unique empanadas, and that's exactly what I found at Island Cider. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? You've got great service and a stellar atmosphere at Island Cider, and I understand why the place was packed every single time I walked by and during my Saturday visit. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? $12.00 is a bit steep for three empanadas, but given it was the only food item available at the time I suppose they can get away with charging a premium for food to accompany a flight of cider or two. Additionally, these were pretty cool empanadas, with fresh fillings like cod and mushroom. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? I'll touch on the cider quickly in admitting that it all essentially tasted the same to me. Apologies to the experts, but I just don't have an appreciation for it. The empanadas however were excellent, with particular kudos to the unique cod empanadas. Two Stars. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? If you like and can appreciate cider this is honestly your heaven, but even if you like nice quick little bites Island Cider has some great options. Even so there are loads of alternatives nearby that are on par for food, so I can't quite say that Island Cider is in my mind the cream of the crop. No Star. read more

Free, generous pours of their four hard ciders. The interior is very cool, with laser cut woodwork hanging on the ceiling above the counter. The sample flights included Brute, Oak Aged, Pear, and Apple Cherry. You can buy 6 and get a cute little tote bag with their logo on it or a case for a discount. We ended up with the Brut ($12.99), made with 40 different kinds of apple for it's lighter and better balanced tan the commercialized hard ciders. The Apple Cherry cider would make a great Door County souvenir or a holiday gift. We were told all the apples used in the ciders are from orchards in Washington Island. Try their Vanilla Cherry soda on tap, which can only be purchased by the glass, a delightful deal of $3. They sell chilled hard cider as well, so you can take it with you on a picnic or back to be enjoyed on their outdoor patio (very dog friendly, there's even a water bowl for your pups!). I also saw they had crackers and nice cheese spreads for sale as well. I'd recommend at least stopping in for the free, no pressure samples! read more

Island Orchard sells serious, tasty cider that could and should compete with national brands. This facility is pretty straightforward: the shop itself is small and offers rudimentary tastings, and you can peek through the double doors into their shiny clean production floor, but there is no tour. I've toured so many breweries and distilleries (and a few wineries) but never a cidery; I would really like to know how this stuff is produced. The tastings were of the regular (brut) cider, oak-aged, pear, apple-cherry, and a single-varietal called Number 25. They were all in the B+/A- range, but my favorite was the oak-aged. What I mean by "rudimentary" is that the clerk poured mini shots for all of the guests and gave a two- or three-sentence description of each one. There are no bells and whistles, but it gets the job done. I would have been very reluctant to make a purchase without assaying the goods. They offer a 10% discount on a full case (twelve bottles), and a free canvas carrying sack with the purchase of a half-case. read more
