A scant 56 miles south of Michigan, you can't get much more north of here…read more Having been the only person who signed up for a tour of Paradise North on a Thursday night, I had owner and distiller Tom Feld all to myself. The distillery is his retirement passion project after beginning grown up life as an environmental scientist prior to transitioning to accounting and finance. I learned about his love of Barbados rum, his Portuguese alembic still, and how he's experimenting with rum using a solera aging process. Limited by only his imagination, Tom has several small batch test runs available in the tasting room, under the Boiler Room Series label. Tom has honored his childhood in his spirits, sourcing local grain from the same farmer his father used on their farm. A forager at heart, he uses spruce tips, prickly ash berries, and birch bark in his gin and sources Puerto Rican cocoa bean husks for his chocolate vodka. While I came for the rum and whiskey, I stayed for the Cherry Bounce. Cherry Bounce is pretty common in Wisconsin, usually made at home in a Mason jar with those famous Door County cherries, a neutral spirit, and sugar. Tom puts his own spin on this tradition by aging it in his bourbon barrels. While currently available in the tasting room, this is unfortunately a seasonal spirit that won't be for sale again until later this summer. Looks like there will be a return trip in my future!

They had a really good October fest on tap too that my friend decided to steal from me, so I got a local hazy ipa from their cooler which was interesting (still would have rather had the Ofest). The outdoor grounds are beautiful and well kept. We sat outside with a choice glass of wine and a beer while soaking it in. We chatted with the owner / wine maker about the local area to help us in our travels and asked some questions about the wine making process. Great time!

Hopefully the next time we come back, we will be able to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful fountain and lovely patio. Their reds are exceptional. They have a sister winery called Door 44 as well. We can't wait to go back and enjoy their wines again. Their flights are incredibly reasonable at four for $10. They also have a wine club you can join. Highly recommend!

There are several beers on tap as well as in cans, ciders, and soda. I'm not a beer drinker, so I tried a Cherry Von Stihl Cider from the nearby Von Stihl Winery/Cidery/Distillery. I may have found my new cider! Anywho, for a small town like Algoma, this place was hoppin', and it wasn't just locals! There is plenty of seating indoors at the bar or around it. There is a patio right outside, also with ample seating, The outdoors is dog friendly, but I don't know about the indoors (although a giant garage door opens to combine the two, so...) There is a small corner offering up various merch like hats, t-shirts, mugs, etc. 10/10 would recommend a stop for a quick drink if you're in the area or just passing by. We tried the pork belly pizza and I am glad we did. The sauce had a bit of a kick to it, but it was delicious. We will definitely be back soon.
