Yes, yes, yes! This winery is a vacationer's dream. We were greeted by one of their "bartenders" who handed us their pamphlet of available wines. She very happily told us we could sample 5 (or 6?) wines for free and then were welcome to purchase additional glasses if we wanted. WINE FOR FREE, people. I ended up trying a wide variety of wines, thanks to the bartender. She helped me pick some sweet and some dry wines, while also mixing up reds and whites. I really liked the blueberry, barrel-aged cherry, and also Oktoberfest. Everything else was pretty standard and there weren't any that I disliked (which is saying something coming from me). It seems like they made a smart move by giving the free samples because I ended up buying the Oktoberfest, the regular cherry wine, and some closeout white wine (Fish Tale?) for $5 a bottle. They have a discount that gets you money off depending on how many bottles you buy (for example, $1 off 3 bottles, $3 off 5 bottles). I LOVED this place and will definitely return next time I'm in Door County. It's well worth a visit. read more

Fantastic tour and wine tasting! I am familiar with Von Stiehl Winery from previous visits to Algoma but this was the first time taking the tour and doing a tasting. It was well worth it! Very informative and entertaining staff kept the entire time interesting and fun. Toured the processing a bottling facility located across the street followed by a cheese, sausage, salsa and wine tasting in the Rathskeller located below the original building. Finished with a chocolate and wine pairing back in the main room of the winery. Don't miss this opportunity. read more

We have been going to Vin Stiehl for years and each year their wine gets better and better. The building itself is wonderful to visit as its gorgeous and historic. They have a varied wine selection, some good, some just okay but they have something for everyone. We are suckers for anything they Gamba age so we always buy a few bottles of whatever they have in stock! The Alexander Cabernet is another favorite. It always a fun time to stop in and do a wine tasting. read more

Wisconsin's oldest and most delighted winery for sure! They have such a great array of wines to choose from that there is no way you can't find one that you don't like. The staff is astute, well kept and very timely in their service. Free-tasting unless you go to the more expensive wines - your oak-aged wines, the cherry bounce which is borderline brandy, etc. The bottles of wine themselves are priced very reasonably as well. I come back here bi-weekly in the summer. To stock up, bring friends to try new wines, or to just get out and enjoy the day. I would definitely recommend this stop to anyone who loves wine! read more

My first time at the winery. What a cool, old place! They have a really great selection. The outside patio is . We went on a Saturday afternoon with live entertainment outside. The servers were very attentive and helpful. The setting was just perfect. We did a sampling inside and everyone was very knowledgeable on the variety of wines. Hooo-doggy, do these Wisconsin winos know how to par-tay! Justin and I drove up to Door County (this is *just* outside Door) for a weekend trip and happened upon this little winery just in time for their Wet Whistle Wine Fest. Who knew wine fests could be so fun? From grape-stomping competitions to live polka music to "Win a Free Bottle of Wine" games (ring toss, putt-putt and the like), there was nary a dull moment at the Von Stiehl festival. They also had delicious eats from various Wisconsin sausage kings (sorry, no Abe Froman) and a kickin' chicken chili that actually paired nicely with their Sauvingnon Blanc - yum! Of course, there was wine tasting itself, which was just fun--Von Stiehl's products run the gamut from a cranberry wine that tastes like Ocean Spray to a concord grape wine that tastes a lot like Smuckers jam (I actually wanted a bottle of that one) to a very nice, respectable Riesling. I liked the small town charm of the whole experience--the view of Lake Michigan from the polka/game/food area, all the game-day Wisconsinites wearing their Packers colors while sipping wine and especially the sweet woman running the games who gave me an extra try at ring toss that clinched my win! read more

What a great winery! Google Maps got us turned around a bit, but the place isn't too difficult to find, just up the road from the lake. This was our first stop on the Door County Wine Trail. We walked in the door and were greeted immediately. We were asked if it was our first visit, and we confirmed that it was. Our server handed us a wine list and told us to start picking wines to sample. As usual, I tried the whites and my husband tried the reds. I was actually really impressed. We took home the pinot grigio, but a close second was the oaked riesling. Our server insisted we try the unoaked, then the oaked riesling to taste the difference. I didn't think I'd like either riesling, but the oaked riesling wasn't very sweet, and was actually kind of dry, in a good way. Some of the furniture in the sitting area (the tables and stools are covered in whine corks! How fun! You can get some local specialties here too, like cheese, and a bunch of wine-related items like accessories, coasters, glasses, etc. Our server asked where we were headed next on the trail, and made some great recommendations. We even swapped a couple of the wineries we were going to visit based on her recommendations. Plus, she told us to head up U, which runs along the lake, instead of taking 42, as we originally had planned. Oh, and some of the names of the wines are fun. Like the Naughty Girl and the Skinny Dip Point. Do stop here at the beginning or end of your wine trail tour. read more

Home sweet home. This opinion is biased because I grew up in this sleepy town, but regardless this place is a good time and a great value. It is located in a historic building meticulously maintained directly on the water. They offer tours to describe the history, and they have a beautiful back patio with tables to sip your wine and watch the current pass. They have complimentary tastings and the staff are not pushy to sell you anything or rush your experience. They offer wines at multiple price points so everyone can enjoy. They do not use local grapes, boo, but they make some more complex wines beyond the usual Door County fruit wines. This place is worth a spot. I go back to the days when Von Stiehl's would let customers decant their own samples. Now a days they have very friendly bartenders pour you samples. I guess too many people were getting a snootful pouring their own. Von Stiehl's is a landmark in Algoma. I believe it is the oldest winery in the area. The building is worthy of note. Feel free to look around. There are a plethora of wine types to try and to buy on site. This time we bought a malbec, a rose, satin red and a dry Door County cherry wine. These are the favorites in our household. However there is something for everyone's tastes. This is a don't miss place to go when one visits Algoma. After going to Von Stiehl's we walked around Algoma a bit. There are some very cool older buildings in the town. Well, you can't get snockered on wine anymore; but this is a great place to taste and buy some great wines. read more

I'm fussy about my wines! I've made an investment not only in my cellar but on my palate as well. Stopped here on a whim and found it an interesting winery. Some estate bottled wines, but a lot of fruit is shipped in from prime areas on the West Coast. I tried the complimentary tasting flight and found some very quaffable wines. I prefer all types of wine done in an excellent fashion but like my wines on the dry side. They have a lot to offer every type of palate. I enjoyed most of the whites I tasted, but I really enjoyed (drum roll) the Dry Cherry. Whimsical on the nose, light in color like a rose. It was dry but very nicely done as the fruit comes through and has a pleasant finish. I get cherry tart and bubblegum on the initial palate and finishes with dried rose pedals. Got me some to take home. They have an extensive gift shop with interesting wine themed stuff if you like that sort of thing. Generous sized glasses for swirling and stemless bowls for the Reds. Nice touch! Be sure to drop by and check them out...worth the stop. read more

I have managed a tasting room for several years in Arizona and this is not only well run, historic and ever so charming! Linda was a delight and the cherry wines both dry and sweet were such a treat ! Their ice wine made with Wisconsin apples will be a new after dinner treat. This is a great place to visit. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places. The wines are good, there us a wide variety from sweet to dry. I particularly liked their sparkling Viognier/Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay (buttery/oakey) and their dry Riesling as well as some of the heavier California cabernets. The inside is very cute, historic, definitely check out the upstairs showcasing the history. They also sell a lot of cute and funny items for wine lovers. read more

Went to Door County on a trolly wine tour and and this winery was one of our favorite. Hard to find a good red wine. We don't like too dry or too sweet. Our favorite is "Naughty Girl". Very smooth and fruity maybe cause some brandy is added. Now our relatives are hooked. We live in MI. Can only buy in WI stores but they will ship to certain states. I want to go back and try some of the wines classified as "fruity". Some of them also have brandy added. Their Octoberfest is also very good (white wine). read more

Very disappointed with the winery. Attended Winefest in Door County on Saturday and the Von Stiehl wine booth was telling customers that if you went to the winery today (meaning same day as the fest) you could purchase wine, buy one get one. We went 45 min out of our way to go to Algoma and visit the winery. When we were in line to purchase wine, there were 3 people ahead of us, all from the Winefest as they had wrist bands on, and we were told that we were not informed correctly. One had a card that had a special deal, the other two and myself did not have anything but the word of the workers at the fest. Needless to say, Von Stiehl would not acknowledge what we were told and did not even suggest a special offer for the inconvenience. 3 out of the 4 walked out without any purchase!!! Shame on you Von Stiehl for not even suggesting a different offer or try to verify with their booth. When you have several customers stating the same thing it usually isn't something they dream up. read more
