This is a good location to put a lumber yard/ home center! To bad it doesn't act like one. Every time I go in to look at cabinets, doors, fireplaces etc. I get the cold shoulder. NO ASSISTANCE! No one appears willing to assist you. I won't be going here again! read more

I have driven past this place for the last 3 years and always wanted to go in. decided to go today and what a waste of my time. First off, none of the employees were wearing masks period. they had a sign at the door that all entering have to ware a mask but why dont the employee need to abide by the state rules? secondly, the google search said that they were open until 5. We walked in at 3:55pm and were asked what we were looking for and my answer was " just wanting to look around" and the employee response was " well you have 5 min so figure it out" i work in the interior design industry and I will never recommend people to go there!!! read more

Stopped in, had specific ideas for upscale windows and siding for our house remodel. We were told that we didn't need an appointment, but then there wasn't anyone to discuss pricing with us. Although the salesman was knowledgeable & helpful, he did seem distracted. When we were almost finished a manager(?) came up and asked our salesman if he was about finished because he had an important customer that needed attention. We said we were finished then we heard the manager introduce the customer to our salesman. The other customer was a doctor. I hope the doctor was going to spend $20k+ to make up for the sales that was lost by us. 4 stars for product knowledge, 1 Star for customer service. Don't go unless you identify yourself as doctor or some other professional title (my wife is a doctor also, but we didn't introduce ourselves as such). read more

Shoppers beware!!! Do your homework check the prices of competitors before you buy. They do carry quality lines/products but charge at least 35% more for them. They have to "custom order" everything and do not inform you when your custom order arrives. I truly do not know how this store stays in business read more

What is their problem with serving veterans? We're building a shelter for female homeless veterans and came in looking for cabinets. Chris Kulik said he could help. We gave him the shelter specs, the cabinetry we wanted, and the competition's quote. He promised a quote asap. 10 days later, we'd heard nothing from him and when I called for an update, he was dismissive and said "he'd been swamped" and "it's hard to do it with people coming in." Seriously, dude? Within an hour of that call, our Exec Dir received an email with the quote -- 50% higher than the competitor's bid for a lower quality product, and without installation (which was included in other bids). Not one word about the delay. Women friends have told me about being talked down to or overlooked for male customers (I always made a point to wear my grungiest work clothes when there), and Black and Brown friends have told me of being followed closely when shopping. And now this horrible service towards combat veterans. I will not be buying anything there again and will never recommend it to anybody. Instead, I'll warn them off. read more

There is no better place in Valparaiso to buy lumber for a deck remodel. Von Tobel Lumber is competitively priced, has fantastic personalized service seldom seen in the "big box" stores, and associates whom advise the customer as if the project were their own. High marks. read more

Called multiple times for a window quote and they were super busy, so I decided to go in and bring in my own messurements. After a 1/2 hr someone finally noticed me and was happy to give me a quote, but I still needed someone to come out and look at my house and give me an install price. They came out in the next couple of weeks and said they would email me a quote. Months later, and still no quote. They already did the work to come out, have emailed them and no response, not to mention I had picked there top of the line marvin wood windows. Too busy for me, not going to give you my money! read more

We purchased hard wood flooring from Von Tobel's and had their contractors install it. For the most part they did a lovely job. VT measured and ordered the materials for the floor. After installation we had 1 and 3/4 boxes of flooring left over. My husband asked the contractor to return the unopened box and we would keep the opened box. They did not follow instructions and left all of the hardwood. I called and asked how do we return the additional box of flooring and was told it cannot be returned. Their employee measured and ordered the amount of flooring. They are the professionals and I took their word for the quantity that we needed. I was basically told that it was my fault that there was too much flooring. Now we have an extra box that is heavy and has to be moved. Because of the weight and the bulk, the box is not moved easily and that leaves us in an awkward position without recourse. It would seem to me that Von Tobel's should take responsibility for their work and be more gracious to their customers read more
