Dylan from the Deli gets 5 Stars. I stopped in yesterday, and he helped me pick out all the right snacks for my Big Bear trip. He was very friendly towards me. I needed to sample a few of the dishes, so Deli Dylan happily got me squared away and made sure I was fully taken care of from beginning to end. I go there at lunch today, and they are out of chicken strips, okay no big deal, but when the woman behind the counter is being very rude, and looking at you like youre stupid, is not okay. I never got her name because i was way to pissed off to care, but shes the blonde girl who likes to make you feel stupid, for ordering. I am 100% done with all their attitudes here. I stopped here at 11am today to get a fried chicken lunch combo at the deli. The deli was well stocked and clean. I waited at the counter and there was only one person ahead of me getting a sandwich. There was an older Caucasian lady named "Denise" working the deli counter. My turn came up next and I motioned toward her with my hand and she ignored me. A group of 4 Caucasian men came in and Denise completely ignored me. She said "Who's next?" I again raised my hand and said "I'm next". She again ignored me and served the Caucasian men. I am a 50 year old Asian man and I fit the stereotypical NASA engineer old dude. I am the last one to call racism but I know it when I see it. Denise, whatever your personal feelings are toward Asians is your own business but please leave it at home when you are working as a food server. I just want my food so i can go eat. I spoke to the manager who appeared responsive. I don't know if she will talk to Denise so I am posting it here. Big Bear Lake is probably 80% + Caucasian but there are many tourists and visitors who are not. Let us respect each other in the professional arena. read more

Clean store and friendly staff. Came here because I went to Big Bear, snowboarding, so much fun. We needed some alcohol and food so Vons was a must. Their staff was very friendly. I rode the cart made for disabled people because I was drunk and wanted to ride it. They let me have my fun, not that I was being reckless with it. Some of the staff are super friendly and some of them are rude (which is pretty common in BB unfortunately). They have a great bread section/bakery and beer/wine. Their meat and fish section is pretty weak (I prefer Staters across the street). The produce is not bad, but don't expect much during the winter...the cold and elevation does something nasty to the fruits and vegetables :/ There is also a Starbucks inside in case you want to sip on something while shopping. I'm not sure about the rest of the store.....but the Vons deli section is stupendous. Recently, we were fortunate to have Holly wait on us and put together some incredibly delicious sandwiches. After giving us a friendly greeting and running through the possible sandwich combinations, Holly quickly put together an awesome lunch for us. Not only was the price very reasonable, but the personable and quick service provided by Holly will definitely bring us back to the store for another great lunch! read more

Expect looooong lines, even when the place is mostly empty. They seem to wait until lines are 10+ people before opening another check stand. I only come here when I HAVE to, otherwise Stayers across the street is both cheaper, and MUCH faster. read more

This Vons has to be the most profitable Vons on California. I've been to Big Bear at least once a year for the past 10 years. My family rents a cabin and we have lots of fun. I'm reviewing Vons because no matter how packed and crazy the store is all the employees are always walking around with smiles and always ask if they can help you find something. The alcohol stockers must make double because the wine and sports fly off the shelves. Kinda scary that everyone in this city is drinking. Nonetheless the staff is great. Pretty standard Vons. Weekends and holidays in summers and winters are crazy and super crowded. We usually bring up half our groceries, and get the rest of what we need here. Some discounts with your Vons card from home. We generally find whatever we need. read more

First a little backstory: I'm a Full time local of 13 years, business and home owner. Married. Like to eat healthy and fresh. VONS is excellent, they are our store. The checkout clerks are nice and friendly, very small town feel without the "market" feel. I like a big store like this, they are well stocked, great selection, progressively changing to the needs of locals/visitors, lots of organic options too! The Starbucks is a bonus! The deli is awesome, I love the cheap but great breakfast burritos. The deli rocks some great sandwiches too. Really, I have NO BAD THINGS to say about VONS. It seems that anyone who is very negative about their experience here didn't take into account it's a small community, they can't be everything you'd expect "down the hill" or that yes, the store WILL be packed and parking/checkouts will be limited on Fridays-Saturdays, holidays or before a big snow storm. That is reality, luckily I've noticed thru awareness when to go and I only blame myself if I go when it's busy. VONS, you are our store, Thank you for being part of the Big Bear Lake community! Shopped there this past Friday. Double check the eggs your buying!! Almost every case had broken eggs. Poorly stocked and sure enough, I contracted the norovirus from eating contaminated onions and got salmonella!! Double recipe for disaster weekend of throwing up and feeling miserable. Best to only shop here early when it's not over picked and the refrigerators haven't been slaving all day and not keeping the stuff at the right temp. Screw you Von's. I'm pissed! read more

The Big Bear Vons is sort of dark and depressing. On a winter weekend it's filled with tons of skiers buying junk food, beer, and pre-made food, as well as some of the locals. The checkout area is crammed with people - some of whom are wearing sweatpants and look like hillbillies. Nonetheless, the selection of fresh and packaged food is pretty decent, and the location is great for anyone going to the lake or ski resorts. read more

My friends own a vacation home in Big Bear so we come up with them at least once per year. I always shop at the Vons for our food and supplies. The location is convenient, I can always find a parking spot and most importantly, the workers are always very friendly and helpful. 5 stars for the Vons employees! read more

I really appreciate that for a small town Big Bear Lake is stocked with a full-size Vons with groceries at no higher price for the convenience than shopping down in the LA/OC areas. Unfortunately, next time I'm here I am going to try the competition even if it means driving a bit further to a grocery store. Here's why: First, the spouse and I stopped in for the fixings to make a picnic by the lake and a pancake breakfast the following morning. The deli meat on the shelf was expired -- thankfully we noticed before heading out of the store. Another time during that same trip my spouse stopped in for some diary. The dairy my spouse purchased was expired but it wasn't readily apparent -- at first. Spouse hid the fact that the milk was bad because we had already had to return the eggs we bought when we first got into town because they were cracked, followed by some yogurt that was purchased on another grocery run along with the aforementioned milk because it, too, was bad. By the time it became disgustingly apparent that the milk was well beyond the sell-by date, my spouse had had it with making returns to the supermarket and thought it would slide by unnoticed. The problem? It's kind of hard not to notice a sour mucus-clot slopped all over your coffee mug -- and in one's mouth! -- first thing in the morning! (Thank you, Vons, for causing a marital spat!) I am a Vons shopper here at home but in this location there isn't enough year-around foot traffic, I'm guessing, to keep stock moving off shelves -- and store management isn't as vigilant as they should be about pulling past-due foodstuffs. Don't get me wrong: The store is clean and the folks are friendly but you've gotta watch those sell-by dates as if your health -- and your marriage -- depends upon it! Next time I am in the area I'm going to try my luck elsewhere. read more

It is obvious the target consumer is a tourist. I know better to go in on a Saturday but I needed one item. The price was up from $2.99 to $3.99 and just across the street it is $2.99. If I am going to pay premium prices I want premium service. I waited in the one and only open express line, as I got close they closed it. The other lines were packed. I walked to the self check out - don't get me started on how that should not exist and it was backed up to the back of the store. They had one person directing people to lines and one at the self check out. How about you put them on a register. The lines take forever because they have no baggers. I understand the job market is hard right now. Hire more people, pay better wages, call more people in and eat the overtime. How about a manager work that express line I was in while the person was on lunch break. The lack of baggers is even a problem during the slow times since they have limited checkers and it takes forever if they have to bag the groceries. I have watched people bagging their own stuff. If I wanted to bag my groceries I could save 35% over their prices at WINCO. read more

My husband and brother went to the Von's deli to buy fried chicken on Friday, 9/26, at 5pm with the hopes of also getting potato salad. They bought an 8 piece container which was the worst fried chicken I have ever seen. The chicken was dried out and there was little edible meat on the chicken. The wings, drumsticks and chicken breast were all covered in dried hard batter - it looked like it was 3 day old chicken. There was no potato salad in the deli - the clerk told them that the macaroni and cheese was a cold salad. My brother and husband are not cooks and really believed this was a cold salad when it definitely is a side dish that has to be heated up - the clerk obviously did not know what they were talking about or was telling them a complete lie. My brother owns a cabin in Big Bear and generally shops at Von's when he is there. I will definitely recommend that he shop at Stater Brothers instead and I will never shop at the Von's in Big Bear again. Von's - you've got to improve your food quality and employee training! read more

I like to variety of products including the baked goods. The strore is clean and tidy. Today was a Saturday, when I went to check out there were only 2 checkers and at least 40 people waiting in the 2 lines. I asked a lady if she would open another aisle, she said she was done for the day. In addition the manager walked by and quickly opened a door and was gone. Costumer service needs to get better and I hold the manager responsible. He should have been working an aisle and helping out. I left my food and went across the street to Stater Bros. I have been going to Von's for years but each store is different. Today I was really turned off. read more
